Yeah I'm a Light and Height & budget guy. and as a filmmaker in Hwd Owned a bunch of manfrottos, wooden sticks and most heavy assorted travel pods. I had to hybrid and old super lite ITE sticks with the clamps and bowl and graft and obscure german fluid/friction head for travel. turns out I make most footage with this and leave the larger ones at home. Thanks Markus for doing the legwork esp on your fave tripods -i'll be looking at them.

I bought a tripod in 1980 or so and it is a Smith Victor Kenlock. It wasn't very expensive, but it has suited me very well all these years! One of these days, I'm going to get a tripod for backpacking and it will be a Pedco UltraPod at 91 grams or a Manfrotto PIXI at 190 grams. Probably the Pedco!

Hey Markus, Greetings from South Africa
My favorite tripod is my Manfrotto 525 MW spreader... This giant dinosaur is incredibly stable on live events when you are zoomed in like crazy onto a stage, one appreciate the value of a heavy tripod. But the tripod that was on most of my trips through Africa is a tiny tripod by Silk from I guess late 50s early 60s... It was abandoned in a Warehouse by the previous tenant. Light and sturdy enough that I can film game at long distances, but I carried it on my back to all kinds of exotic places! You won't like it cause it has "turny thingies" hope that is correct American... Love your channel, very clever and simple solutions to frustrating problems.

I believe that you conveyed the object of your video very well. The world is full of tripod makers, and when you break it down, it really boils down to trying to find legs for the head that you like. I use the Sirui Carbon Fiber Legs, with my Platypod head, and it works for me. But you offered enough objective thoughts on what you found worked or did not work that people can now make a truly good decision on what will work for them. Great video, on a great topic.

Good morning Markus, I really love how you continue with discussing less covered subjects here on youtube. One small thing I will disagree with is the claim that all Manfrotto stuff is great, I've personally had failures of their tripods and they were NEVER abused or dropped. The first was an older aluminum green painted outdoor model, literally the plastic holders that held the feet fell out of the leg tubes while photographing the white mountains in New Hampshire one winter. I'm assuming it was the cold, likely the shrunk the plastic more than the aluminum but for a product marketed for outdoor expeditions that should have been tested. In addition the company wouldn't send me new (lost in the snow) feet for free, I had to pay I think $40! This was pre-internet and youtube, I'm guessing customer service may be better in this new climate. My second failure was the carbon fiber 055 tripod, after only 2 years the socket where the one of the legs goes into the top part cracked, it appears as if it was some sort of low grade metal. I did not contact manfrotto but wound up using a product called "goop" to hold it after taping it for several months. Lastly, the Manfrotto 504HD fluid head, I bought one 2nd hand along with a tripod and the counterbalance isn't really strong enough to properly balance my Sony A7R3 with a 200-600 attached even using the foot mount. Perhaps it's worn out, I don't know the prior history but i have to slightly tighten the tension know to prevent it from flopping. A lot of really old Manfrotto all aluminum tripods I have seen to be better built, I haven't had any failures with them but they are quite heavy. Be well and have a great week, thanks again for the mid-week video. -Rob

The tripod heads that only support one side of the camera plate are a poor choice. The camera won't level out. I threw away one of those tripods like the Xit. The only tripod I've purchased more than one of is a Velbon 607 with PH358 head. It has a decent fluid head for a light camera/camcorder. Available used on Ebay. If you are buying a first tripod try to do it in person so you can compare. Lean on the head to see if the leg locks slip. Weight may be annoying to carry, but adds to the safety of the camera perch. Thanks Markus.

Just subscribed - thanks for lots of really interesting videos..would you consider doing a 'how many shutter actuations have all my cameras done ' video - would be really interesting to know. ( I have worn out two shutters, both on Samsung NX1000s -( my favourite make of camera, and the 45mm f1.8 lens is ridiculously sharp, even at f1.8 - I'm saving up for an NX500, after seeing your review video )..keep up the good work, but maybe consider cutting back on the tripod shopping :-)

All of your videos u can see your passion bleed right thru. I learn so much more from someone thats happy with what they do. I missed a good giveaway but Ill bet none are as light s my $12 tripod but the head is not so smooth with an old Pentax on it. Im sorry people bug ya but when youre poor and feel how those fluid heads move, It kinda makes ya dream. So ya shouldnt let it bother ya too much

i prefer the twist grips, i have two benro carbon fiber ones, the travel one which is crazy light and the classic with flip top, with the benro twist grips you can open all three/four sections with one twist.
keep the tripods, send me a kiss x x.
sometimes i just take the head with me and a ally g clamp, light and compact, great if you know the location, just use the railings and fences as your tripod.

I would have loved the Benro carbon fiber legs with their pan-tilt head, but here I am with my O'connor 50D head and 35A legs that weighs 25lbs :p. But in my defense, sometimes I have to use 40lbs of camera xD.

Great review. I own several tripods of which the Gitzo tripod with Manfrotto fluid video head weighs a tonne and my range of Manfrotto tripods and heads also weigh way too much for travel. I bought a Sony VCT-VPR1 with remote control and a Sony RX100Vll to use with it for travel but now use it at home. It would be good to have you review or comments on the Sony tripods especially the two with remote control.

I tried to use tripod ones when I was travelling, but it was very inconvenient. The biggest problem was the size, not weight. So I want tripod made from strongest steel to be extremely compact. Do you have or hear about tripods from steel? I have one but it very cheaply made.

    • @MarkusPix

Honestly I think most cameras can do that nowadays, even the cheap ones at Best Buy. Almost everything has HDMI output (just get a HDMI to USB adapter) and almost everything has good quality. Almost any camcorder over 200 would work. If you want blurry background then something like a Lumix G100 or Canon M50.

$600 for something that only goes up to 56" and has a ball head and I can't stand ball heads. Plus it requires a hex wrench to attach the mounting plate. Too overpriced and underwhelming for me personally.
