- Опубликовано: 16 ноя 2024
- How to clean and maintain a torque converter, 40 series. Shows how to disassemble, clean, lubricate, and assemble a comet 40 series torque converter, or continuously variable transmission. Similar to the comet 30 series TAV2, and comet 20 series torque converter used in go karts and mini bikes, but the 40 series can handle from 8-18 horsepower. Video shows how to disassemble the drive and driven unit, clean, and reassemble the drive and driven unit. Also shows the red and yellow spring orientation to pre wind the driven unit spring for outboard or inboard jack shaft orientation.

Good Job explaining the process for taking it apart and reassembling the pieces showing the pictures without a lot of unneeded boring video and nice recommendation on the moly lube..I went and bought a can and I'm spraying the parts as I type.
Thank you! Extremely helpful in getting my 40 year old Heald Hauler back up and running!
Thank you for being the only video showing how a reverse wound yellow spring is to be oriented , huge help bless you
It’s a sacrifice I gladly take on.
Good tutorial - to the point and very practical.
Working on a build, was told reverse wound spring.Your video is perfect, thanks!!
Excellent job on this!!! Thanks for taking the time, it was very helpful and allowed me to explain the functionality of the drive and driven clutches to my son.
Great video, still helping people years later.
great video, I bought a pulley set and then learned that I needed the yellow spring, so I'll try to change the spring over
I was about to buy a new converter set, but now thanks to your video I know I don't have to... Thanks a lot
Now I see what my clutch is suppose to look like, now I can see why the sheave is pertruding out so much. Great video!!!
Great how to and no supper loud music good job
Best video ive found! No other videos ive watched actually show the correct clocking on the driven! Ty!
Too many noobs out there. I’m old school and too legit to quit.
Thanks so much for making this video. I am currently fixing up a Skidoo Boizzard 5500 with a Rotax 503. My next project is to do this procedure you have outlined. Thanks!
Thanks for the instructions ...helped me save a few bucks and made my grandson HAPPY
+Greg Sullivan glad to hear it's fixed!!!
Good video. I noted the 2 bronze guide bushings you spoke of. The new aftermarket one I bought uses steel bushings now instead. These stick and gall the sheave shaft. I replaced with original Comet bronze bushings. Should be much better.
Great video for maintaining Comet clutches.
I'm doin this right now on a old manco 3 wheeler, just what I needed. thanks
Good vid refreshed me on how to do these havent done one since the 70,s
What a relief your video will save me no telling how much
Great video! Did this on my 10HP Snowdog and it makes a huge difference.
Very helpful! First time trying this on my trail wagon. Thank you
glad this is short and informative, cause i'm going to sit my 6yr old grandson down to watch this and make him do the work. with my help of course, cause his attention span isn't long. seems to take to fixing things with great enjoyment. thanks for the tips, oh we're going to work on a Yerf-dog go cart
Thanks for the video. My 12yr. old and I just started the build of a Manco Dingo(basket case) that we stumbled across. this is our first cart with a torque converter.
Dingos are the best! I have owned a few of them. They are heavy duty and made to last!
I'm pretty sure you just saved me not only money on buying a new torque converter but from having to sleep on the couch for a week because of buying a new one haha, thank you so much for this video.
haha i know that feeling, thats why i started a youtube channel so i could spend my youtube money on torque converters!!!
Makes me want to take apart my perfectly clean 40 series.
Proper cleaning maintenance is way cheaper than replacing a neglected torque Converter . Use GENUINR USA BUILT COMET BRAND PARTS .
I like your video.it very important to do step by step and explain all the little detail parts. I like how you did it and showed how to put it back together I haven't seen your other videos. But this is my first time breaking all this down so the little Details Matter. I don't want to mess nothing up I want to thank you. I might message you if you have time just to pick your brain if I can for help
Excellent video. Very professional with thorough explanation. I have my CVT cover off and I’m going to give it a go.
Great video! Awesome job explaining the process step by step.
Thanks for the great info, will try it to keep from jumping on take off.
Great Video! Well done and thank you for the information.
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to help us.
Glad it was helpful!
Don't know if you'll be able to answer this but I have a dilemma. I'm converting my 40 Series TC into a jackshaft but I need the drive sprocket mounted on the OPPOSITE (back/inside) side of the main plate on the rear shaft. Im simply using a centrifugal clutch on the crank, chained to the jackshaft, and from there to the rear axle. The final sprocket is fixed in place on said axle. I can not find a video or explanation of what shaft/bearings I need to make this work and whether or not I NEED a pillow block bearing for extra jackshaft support.
Love your videos and happy Veteran's Day.

Whatever works. Check out my mini bike big block conversion video
@@KartFab looks great but i dont have a welder...
Just wanted to say thank you for all the videos and info you have put out there. Great job and ive learned alot from what you have provided so thanks again.
Exactly what I needed to know, thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Thank you for this great tutorial.
I just cleaned my comet 40 thanks for the video saved me some money! I get a lot of smoking from my belt which just messes up my drive pulley not sure why. Any thoughts on why that could be happening?
Hmm doesn't sound good. Are you using the correct belt for the center of Jackshaft to center of engine shaft distance? (Google comet 40 series belt chart). Also what is your tire size and gear ratio?
Love it! Thanks! - Going to get started on my kids kart right away....
This was awesome. Thanks for putting it together...
Excellent info, well presented...thanks.
I’m so glad I keep my stuff inside😂
That was nicely edited and explained video. Thumbs up.
Thanks man i appreciate it!!
Very good video, time well spent making this

Thanks! I know that this video will be helpful to those that have a 40 series torque converter. I don't expect a lot of views, but those that need to see it will get the benefit!
Great video, it really helped me out.
Awesome video!!
Thanks, I hope this works to restore mine to working order!
No problem. Hope it works out for you.
So the reverse spring for the driven is if you plan to spin the driven counter clock wise correct?
Great video so thank you. Question, im new to these,,,when starting to go and before full rpm it feels like pretty nasty shaking going on,,,bad enough i thought the motor was loose,,,is this common cause of these needing serviced? What i have now doesn't look bad at all but i know guy i got it from had it sitting in pretty nasty garage (moisture, etc). Thanks for any insight
Hi great video, which hole is best best climbing hills, thank you
Middle hole is best. If you have issues still, then the hole that gives the most pre-load is the one to use.
There... I did one thing for you. I hit the thumbs up. Good lesson.
Very good video it helped me out to let me know what type i had and will for sure help with rebuilding. The sleeve in the middle is broken so if you know where i can get the part i would appreciate it very much.
Thanks
Dave
I'm not sure what you mean by sleeve. Maybe the brass bushings? Drive or driven unit? Either way, the only place to get parts for them is mfgsupply.com and if they don't have it you are SOL and need to buy a new unit. Common replacement parts are the wear tabs, springs, and roller weights. Other stuff may not be available.

Great video. Well explained and very appreciated!
Excellent! Thanks for teaching us stuff!
Great thank you. Very intuitive.
Thank you helped me a lot.
Great how to video thanks!!

+Jeffery Edward thanks
Which torque converter would fit on a 13hp Honda GX390? just wanted to know as I am going to start a project ?
Thanks for this, super helpful!
What is the difference in the colors of the big springs?
Great video, this was extremely helpful, and saved me lots of time, and money! :D
Glad to help!
Awesome video!! Helped out a lot

Well put together video . Thank you for posting this , it helped out big time : )
No prob.
Thank you for this video.
Mình muốn tìm mua nhưng ở việt nam không biết nơi nào bán bộ momen xoắn này??????
Do lube the same areas on the 30 series too?
Very cool thanks for the info
awesome video man. what do you torque your 3/4 crank bolt to?
+Robert Cataldo you can look up a table on that, but real world I just impact it on with a drop of blue threadlocker. Doesn't take much and you don't have to worry about it backing out with threadlocker.
Very well done video.
what do you use to lube them?
GREAT WORK VERY PROF,
Awesome job thank you
Nice video, thanks for sharing.
no problem
Nice job
thanks!
thanks Man! Great Video
Can you clarify the three spring holes? You say middle is stock, one is for speed - is that top speed, or hole shot speed? Also, you said one is for off-road only. I have an off-road kart and I wand hole shot speed - which hole should I use?
+RamjetAlpha1 the one that provides the least spring tension
can i use a 30 series driven pulley with a 40 series converter ?
+TheOg Boosjukie No. 30 series has a different diameter, less hp rating, and is assymetrical. 40 series is symmetrical and has a wider top width belt.
Thanks for that!!
What would u recommend for off roading go karts a regular centrifugal clutch or a torque converter
Centrifugal clutch with jackshaft reduction, or a torque converter would work.
How do I know if I need yellow (reverse wound) spring?
Very nice Video man.
+Alex Mayer thanks
Just bought a 40 series set. How do I know which way the driven clutch needs to be mounted (inboard or outboard). I bought a reverse wound spring but not sure if I need it. How do you know which way the driven clutch is supposed to turn to work correctly? Any help is appreciated
Watch the video through the end. Your answer is literally In the video. Towards the end
Just bought a $100 go kart with a blown out spring (It's hanging out). Also no rubber clutches, all are gone & one where the clutch foot has a welded screw.
The go cart pulls and gets to speed with me on it. I'm 200lbs. It's an old 2 seater mango fox with a 6 5 Tecumseh. I wouldn't mind keeping it broken if that's what's "throttling it down".
I have a Perfect condition 30 series Comet Torque-A-Verter from the same era(homemade 4wheeler my uncle made...long story). But should I save it for when then one goes & they are older?
Man that sounds bad. Post up pictures on www.diygokarts.com and people can help you there. Less back and forth. Honestly it could be something simple, but it’s easier to just take a bunch of pics and get the forum to look at it.
Nice video. very informative.
+waldan1701 thanks
Any advice on new springs and parts? I have one that I believe some components may be broken. Any advice would help. Thanks!
mfgsupply sells parts for the 40 series torque converters. Worst case scenario, you can get a whole new unit. Take pics and go to diygokarts.com forum, lots of good info and advice there.
+KartFab sorry for the late reply but thanks a bunch! - i opened it up and one of the springs just came off. re-twisted it and it works fine! only problem is that it comes together when i open my motor's choke. not sure how to fix that though,
Thank you man!
Great video thanks
my driver had 4 brass rings, 2 under the snap ring that I assume the belt rode on, one above the snap ring and then one at the other end of the spring. Seems to me that the one extra ring above the snap ring would stop the sheave from movin in all the way, so I opted to leave it out. did I figger wrong kartfab? its a 1980 manco 8 hp 3 wheeler
Some versions have no brass rings in the middle. The middle brass rings keep the vehicle from creeping forward when idling. If you mess with the ones that the spring uses for proper tension, you mess with all sorts of things that shouldn’t be messed with.
nice job!
nice job sir
