    Back in the Myspace days I sent Armageddon from Terror Squad some of my beats. He replied (which was nice or him), and said that my beats 'needed more elements'. I was using loops with very light, simple drums. Now look! I still have those beat CD's and Zip disks.

    One thing’s for sure, you can’t have a rapper with a weak flow or lyrics over a drum less beat. It’s a beautiful antithesis to the tradition of “booty-shaking” hip hop and a focus on bringing out an emcee’s presence.

    To everyone bashing the drumless beats...different producers have different philosophies about how their beats are supposed to compliment an artist. Nicholas Craven has always said that his production is not about pursuing the goal of making the best beat or being considered the best producer, it's about activating his artists as much as possible. In his mind, if the beat inspires the artist to write great lyrics and the song as a whole is good, then the producer's job is done. Drumless hip hop also requires special samples which are harder to find and require a different level of digging from the producer. A lot of my drumless beats take longer to create than my percussion-heavy beats when you consider the amount of time spent looking for samples. The video explains this concept well but I think some just don't like it.

    • @seanfrance3182
      @seanfrance3182 Год назад +36

      I love this statement “activating the artist” it’s so true. Hip-hop/ rap is not a monolith, some artists really know how to paint a picture and sometimes deep sounds without the clutter of 808s and heavy drums are needed to score a song or message. I’m a huge fan of Nicholas Craven and Alchemist for realizing this.

    • @Statuslock
      @Statuslock Год назад +13

      Opposite for me since I mostly make sampled beats. Its actually harder to add percussions to samples because it has drums already, not to mention most boom bap style has been over done, so one criticizes themselves like "naw thats already been done before", causing me to do drumless beats.
      It is lazy. And it seems like nothing we add to it works. Because the sample is THAT good. So we settle with drumless beats.

    Great video, it’s important to note that “drumless” doesn’t necessarily mean no drums in the beat at all, it just means that the drums aren’t the most prominent part of the beat. It makes it so that you HAVE TO pay attention to every other element of a sample and really appreciate it and let the sample breathe. Nicholas Craven is probably my favorite producer rn, songs like Smokin Samson, Power Nap, Straight & Tall, Brand New Chanel Kicks, etc… his albums with Boldy… it’s just differenttt

  • @TheCratesMotel
    @TheCratesMotel Год назад +10

    Am I missing something here? Loads of us were making drumless tracks in the 80s. It was out of necessity because our samplers couldn’t play a sample and a beat at the same time so we had to find samples that worked with no beat accompaniment. This technique was definitely around before the producers mentioned in this video. Sure, they may have become famous for it, but they didn’t invent it.

  • @nervouscooks

    Ice Cube, Today Was A Good Day. Perfect example of no added drums, just a fire loop. Not even chopped just straight up. Madlib is also heavy into this style. It’s been around for a while but definitely Roc Marci and the Alchemist plus all the other artists like Earl, MIKE, Boldy etc are just pushing that wave. I’m sure to some it might seem “Lazy” in terms of production but it’s the same as not understanding Picasso painting a masterpiece in five minutes. It’s the ear and the work that was put in years before that adds up to that skill and there’s a feeling of catching lightning in a bottle when you find that loop. Haters will always hate but there’s enough styles in hip hop alone to please everyone’s taste. 👍

Drumless hip-hop has become a favorite of mine since my first time actually listening to Ka back in 2020 which led me into Roc since they have tracks together (first heard him in 2017 but I was fresh out of highschool, hadn't experienced enough to really feel it then). Listening to Alc made me search for others too and its taken me on such an incredible journey through music. I couldn't be happier that I've discovered their music
    Earl, Mike, Mavi and and everyone else have been creeping into and cementing their place in my rotation since last year. Earl solidified it this year when I listened to "Some Rap Songs" earlier this year and couldn't stop listening to "The Mint" with him and Navy Blue. Mike and Wiki made an incredible statement with the Alchemist profuced "Faith is a Rock" and the standout track is easily "Mayors a Cop". Idk what was going on in the studio when that song was made but I NEED a behind the scense explanation

    "Let the rhythm hitm!!!"...not just the beat. We sometimes find ourselves "hypnotized by the drums" and miss the lyrics. Some productions do that on purpose to sell content. They drown out the lack of lyricism by a banging/catchy beat. Most times when people say they like a song is because the best and the hook are catchy. Without the beat yet using the music to put the lyrics at the for front is brilliant, if you are blessed enough to find a pure lyricist/poet to carry the project.

    This reminds me of when Prince dropped one of the only Pop songs to not have a bassline. “When Doves Cry” i watched an interview with his engineer she said “it got really big then during mixdown he kind of removed a lot of things and unproduced it. Then the last thing he did was remove the bass and said “ain’t nobody gonna beleive i’d do this.” At the end of the day he trusted his musical instinct to fit the feel he wanted and it ended up becoming arguably his most successful song.

    That eternal sunshine riff from the soundtrack has its own fantastic breakdown on how Jon Brion made it. There's a behind the scenes that had came out shortly after the movie was released. The technique uses a very old instrument, called a Optigan.
    it's an instrument much like a mellotron, but instead of tape, it's an organ that plays back samples from discs.

    Drumless beats have been hot from day, it's not that new but I'm glad people are recognising the art of it now. Just because a tracks has no drums, that doesn't mean it doesn't have a "beat"

  • @dukethestonecutta
    @dukethestonecutta Год назад +2

    I'd say that these types of beats are a double edged sword. On one end the lyrics tend to be more in focus and can sound really cool if done right either by chopping or by looping an obscure and hard to find sample and breathing new life into it either by mixing it or manipulating the sound of it, but on the other end it looks lazy when you just slap on a sample loop and call it a day, especially if there is room for dope drums and other elements to be added or the sample could be flipped a lot better. I was on the fence a couple of years ago and didn't like the style in the beginning, but now as I've gotten older I've started to appreciate this style more cause it's more soothing to my ear and I can really focus on what rappers talk about in their songs. I recently made a beat with just a sample and I really dug it, but once I tried to add some drums to it, it didn't sound the same, and I'm a drums first kind of guy. It just depends on the vibe and the sample you're flipping. Great video, mate! Salute!

    What a lot of people in the comments aren’t touching on is musicianship.
    Yeah sampling can be intricate and it’s a cornerstone of hip hop, and drumless puts emphasis on the music itself - which in most cases is the core of it all…
    But producers who are musicians and can create from scratch / interpolate and not be constricted by having to find samples / looping: is where it’s at.
    With such low entry barriers, there’s so many producers that don’t know shit about music, and it shows in the redundant / predictable / mediocre production that keeps getting churned out. Sampling can be creative but often times it’s straight up recycling.

    • @py_a_thon
      @py_a_thon Год назад +2

      One of the main reasons to "recycle" samples is to shape them into a new sound...somehow.
      Music culture has progresed far beyond the point of putting a slowed down break over a classic sample from the r&b, funk or disco golden era then kicking an 808. That sound kinda made the music, yet musicians get bored easily.

    • @py_a_thon
      @py_a_thon Год назад

      The sonic density of a perfect moment of rendered sound, that is then used in a unique way...is sort of unmatched for certain forms. 44.1 KHZ of data in a slice of some seconds of sound, that is then used well...can be amazing.

    • @py_a_thon
      @py_a_thon Год назад

      An inverse problem can occur. Someone gets a DAW, some expensive af synths, and some sample libraries, and then they just create something that is...idk: chaos without purpose?

    i used to have a problem with this style years ago, but nowadays, i love it. been making beats for 11 years, ive always prefered my drums to be soft, light, whatever u wanna call it. sometimes i like bumpin a track with no added drums. idc if its lazy or not. if its organic, ill f*ck with it. funny the same people saying its lazy likely wont say this to rza, madlib, even outkast when they did the e.t.
