Quick note, totally confused that Ohm's Law bit. What you need is the power equation, which also has letters in it, and a triangle, and deals with electricity, but is distinctly different. None of us are electrical engineers, but you probably could have guessed that...
Also, regarding LEDs: yes! They only work in one direction, Brian and Jason were constantly swapping back and forth the connections, so if it looks like they had it wired backwards, know that them swapping it to the correct direction was cut for time.

I have not won anything. HERE HOPING!
The Modern Rogue the amount of lemons does it matter the amount of copper and zinc does
12:34 then you realize (salt salt)
The Modern Rogue try with the lemons actually still plugged in you wouldnt put the battery in and then take it out and then use the taze function you leave it in while youre doin it so all you really did was what you got results for you got minute current in the capcitor and got minute results do your same lemon set up again but with the way ive stated. its more of a battery in use when you hold the button down the battery puts its current in and when you discharge it does just that cdusing it to die its not a storage unit like a battery its just a minor safe place before use if you get what im saying
You could use a transformer to convert some of the volts to amps. It might run more effectively if you use lemon juice instead of whole lemons since you'll be able to control/manipulate the distances between the cathodes and anodes so you can get the most juice(pun intended) out of it for your materials.
Try charging a rechargeable battery. Or a super-cap capacitor above 20F (maybe it will also leak charge too fast) [note dont screw up with the wireing (+-)]
Nothing says "Help me" like putting up giant text saying "Ohm's Law" and then not putting the correct equation on screen.
lmao what happened to the resistance...
isn't Ohm's Law watts = amps x volts or is that a different law
@@datrandomdugggy5537 what your thinking of is the power law. It's P = E I.
@@tommylight1312 ah ok thanks
@@datrandomdugggy5537 ohms law is voltage, current, resistance and you use those in diffrent ways to find what you need:
Voltage: is current x resistance
Current is voltage ÷ resistence

“The modern rouge discovers electricity”
Isaac Newton - well shit
(I know he didn’t discover electricity)
with *LEMONS*
R o g u e
15:20 V=IR means Voltage = Current X Resistance. Whilst Wattage = Voltage X current, they're two different equations (V=IR being ohm's law)
Is it really V = IR in America?
I've always learnt it as U = IR; P = UI
it is U = IR and P = UI everywhere, U is voltage in Volt, I is Current in Amps, R is Rresistance in Ohm and P is Wattage in Watt
Wattage is current
was gonna comment this thank you
Ohm’s law refers to resistance
The lemons with all the nails sticking out look like they stole Brian's Scam School hairstyle
Loved the episode. However Ohm's Law has nothing to do with the Watts of a circuit. Ohm's law simply states the relation between resistance, current and Voltage: Resistance =voltage/current (R=U/I) The law you're referring to has a similar formula and triangle, but this is the power. Which is Power(Watts)=Voltage*current.
I couldn't resist not stating this as a Bachelor in electrical engineering.
Congratulations on the 100th video though! Here since the start and loving this channel!
On the topic of electric laws, at the beginning (after the intro), Brian said that they were going to create electricity, yet the law of conservation of energy (First law of thermodynamics) states that energy can’t be created, only transferred or transformed. Still loved he episode even though it will get some perfectionists like myself. Thanks
FatDwane in physics most 3-way formulas go in a triangle
Did somebody make a joke about the Trinity of electricity yet?
Nitro Actually, it's fine to say that they're creating electricity. They are not creating energy from nothing, but they are turning chemical potentials into flowing electrons
Isn't Voltage typically displayed as E not U? Just curious.
You guys should do an episode on different camouflage styles/prints and their uses. E.g. Urban (Berlin Brigade), Dazzle, Digital, Desert (pink?), Snow, etc.
That's a really good idea.
Thanks! I thought it would right up your alley.
You're using Zinc from the nails and a thin copper wire. You need much more surface area. Go look for Zinc flashing, sometimes called soft zinc, that will get you the surface area you need on the zinc side. Copper side, switch to pennies or just buy some thin sheets of copper (copper clad PCBs can be cheap). Limes (pH 1.8-2.0) will preform slightly better than Lemons (pH 2.0-2.2).
This guy batteries
That's what they did. They pretty much increased the surface area of 1 lemon battery by a magnitude of about 16. This, however, does not provide enough POWER to charge the capacitor quickly enough to overcome the bleeding the capacitor experiences and the voltage loss from the indicator LED.
another thing to do is simply increase the lemons/limes... even if you need 1000x more lemons then you had it would be pretty funny to see. as well as removing the led/shorting it out to prevent any power loss through that.
@DickButt, the big problems are definitely current and capacity, but current can be increased by doing what Munden suggested (and by hooking more batteries up in parallel), and capacity can be increased by using more metal and more acid (which is also mostly solved by Munden's suggestion).
Also squishing the lemons a bit lets out more citric acid, meaning the bridge between the connections through the acid will be more consistent, decreasing the resistance by reducing the amount of not-acid the electrons have to pass through to get to the other terminal
Brian: "Does the led work the other way around?" Me: *facepalm*
Not everyone knows diodes are directional I guess
@Assem Ragab are they????????????????????????????????????????????????:)??????????????????????????????¿??????????
@@Bede.d yes diodes have positive and negtive the longer lead in postive i belive and shorter is negitive tho it might be the other way around can't exactly remeber
Yeah they really should have had a grown-up with them for this episode.
I think the Modern Rogue works in Cave Johnson's engineering department.
"I'm going to have my engineers invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"
You all thought he was kidding...
very true. Cave would be proud.
THINK OF THE LEMONS,THE HIGHLY COMBISTABLE LEMONS
Citric acid burns pretty darn well, actually. So Lemons are in fact naturally combustible.
I gotta say, I love these "DIY Science" kind of episodes.
I'm a science teacher, and I've been sharing some of your "safer for work" episodes with kids I have in class who struggle to enjoy science because of past experiences. The videos really bring out an interest in them and the topics are really entertaining to boot.
Thanks for making great content and my job far easier!
So glad you’re enjoying them!!
that little girl at the lemonade stand is way more intimidating now isn't she?
No
what if she has a shotgun?
boi the AR15 has a chainsaw bayonet! it's useless and would get stuck in clothing but...it looks scary so it's dangerous!

was thinking the same thing
LJTwiggy that was annoying the crap out of me the whole time lol.
I figured they would figure it out eventually.
It was at this moment he knew... He fucked up!
@Bryan Valearius yes it would matter. LEDs are diodes, they only allow current to flow in one direction.
Let's give a hand to Brian, cause he will probably need it in the next 100
haha nice one
A year and 1/3, well over half a million subscribers, and 100 episodes! I'm so glad this channel is doing so well, and hope it continues to do at least this well for a long time to come!
Thank you!
I think the quote is: “When life gives you lemons, you make lemon grenades.”
"When life gives you lemons, punch life in the face and make it make you lemonade".
The only real question that remains...
can Trevor still use these lemons for drinks?
TehAdrenalinePickle it depends if the metal mixed with the lemon if not it should probably be safe and I have prophesized that it did not mix so therefore the lemons are generally considered as safe
The zinc will have formed zinc ions in the lemon. This should probably be safe, but it might taste funny, and look funny.
to add to what thermophile said, IF the cathode was pure zinc you could in theory eat and be fine (although it would taste worse and worse the longer you had the zinc in there. But because they used galvanized nails (steel nails with a chemical-zinc plating) it probably wouldnt be the best idea to eat it, i know youre not suppose to inhale fumes given off by galvanized steel because its toxic, i imagine the same goes to eating it
ŦheŁauręnŧ
Zinc fumes are not “toxic” like lead is, it is mostly just finely divided pieces of zinc and zinc oxide, that will trash your lungs. If you get too much it can be toxic, but that takes a few weeks of exposure. However, there could be other metals mixed with the zinc.
Source: I melt zinc frequently in my blast furnace, and did ma research.
Thermophile if you weld galvanized steel you will get very ill.. so you are wrong
And here you guys are at 1 million! You two worked hard, have made me laugh, and made me a more interesting person at the party. Thank you so much!
Voltage = Current x Resistance (V=IR) and Power = Voltage x Current (W=VI). Just a heads up. Power is measured in Watts. Current is measured in Amps, Resistance is measured in ohms, and Voltage is measured in Volts. The Equation you want is the latter.
13:40 "acidic alkaline solution" seems pretty normal to me
heh. That's . . . that's not a thing. (facepalm)
Jason said "when life gives you lemons, make tasers" before I managed to type the very same words.
"When life give you lemons, you make a taser." NICE!!!
this is painfull to watch as an electrical engineer...
oh, man. I'll bet.
Gregor Scott i feel your pain man
It is. But it's also funny because of how dumb it is :P
Then dont watch it m8
Painfully but still entertaining. Like a car crash dont want to look away lol.
You guys are by far my favorite RUclips channel. Modern Rogue is the only channel I’ve watched every video of and many of them I’ve seen several times. You two are just a great duo and all of your episodes are interesting and hilarious.
I would love to see you guys do an episode on billiards and I think it would fit perfectly into your gentleman category.
Can’t wait to see the next hundred episodes, keep up the good work!
Sean Barton Thanks, Sean. I sincerely appreciate that.
Ooh, yeah: billiards would be a fantastic episode.

KittySalvo yes
Congrats on 100 episodes and 500k! It’s been fun and can’t wait to see what’s to come!
thanks!!
Nicola Tesla joke made me laugh the hardest I have in a week!
Fun stuff guys. Result or no result I enjoy the banter and good times. Keep up the rogue work.
Me and my best friend tased eachother with the camera stun gun you made last year, now you're telling me we can make a taser out of lemons?! Stop giving us ideas!
someone said taser party ?
I’m in
Take a bbq lighter apart and the sparkle makes a really simple weak taser. It’s really fun to run up behind people and shock them since it doesn’t do damage nor is it very large.
And trifecta... lemon juice in the eyes...
Nmt Ti, why don't we make a blow gun taser?
According to the great physicist Cave Johnson, the real money is in lemon grenades!
Here's to another 100
My friends and family always get on me for having inside jokes with myself. Now chuckling out "make a tazer" in response to the when-life-gives-you-lemons idiom will just get me more confused looks, instead of laughter it should get for being the greatest science joke ever.
Be you. Don't let your family ever change that. My father tried to change me into something I didn't want to become, and it didn't end well for him (no I didn't kill him).
Make coconut grenades like Swiss family Robinson.
He already did with Grant Thompson, a while ago
king of randoms shit now
he did
The Brennan he did that
Nitro yeah but king of random channel has gone to hell since grant no longer does the videos. And they should see if they can make a Fatman launcher for them like in fallout 4 mini nuke Fatman.
1:31 no Jason, when life gives you lemons YOU BURN HIS HOUSE DOWN WITH THE LEMONS
EVERYONE
He says what we're all thinking!
Imaging waking up tied to a chair in a dark room and in walks a man holding a bag og lemons and some jumper cables
This was probably the best episode yet. I really hope you guys do a follow-up video to this.
Crisco With someone who understands electricity.
Jason Murphy Haha, no I think a lot of the appeal comes from the fact that you aren't experts, it's just two regular blokes attempting to charge a homemade Tazer with lemons.
Thanks!
Ive tried this before, the capacitor seems to experience bleed. My solution was just to add more lemons in parallel.
You guys should revisit this idea but with the following changes:
Use aluminum foil instead of galvanized nails. You have a bigger reduction potential that way, thus resulting in higher voltage. You should also try to use copper plates, or just pennies.
You don't need lemons, just an acidic solution for the battery to work.
Connect more of these batteries in parallel to get more current out of them
I am an idiot. I thought they would make a literal taser gun out of lemons, not charge one
I just love how enthusiastic Jason is at the same time as being super doubtful. You two are great.
Edit: I love the automated voice. It's hilarious!
You mean to tell me i could have powered my gameboy color with 5 lemons instead of wasting my parents money on batteries?
KingTangerine Lemons are probably more expensive with the rate you go through them.
A good visual to explain what volts and amps is a dam filled with water. The amount of water behind the dam is representative of voltage. Amps is represented by a pipe leading out from the damn and the diameter(i.e. flow rate) of the pipe determines the amperage. You can have a million volts from lemon batteries, but if you are only discharging it at .01 amps then it won't be able to do anything
When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what the hell am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!
Prs722 lol you just made my day
Oh, I definitely referenced this while we were filming.
Prs722 Should have been in all caps
Prs722 Good for preventing scurvy.
Wait was this tipsy duck
Hell yeah cant wait till you guys get that golden play button. This channel deserves it! Great duo, awesome content, dope editing! Best channel!!
Thanks man!
Revisit this episode
I am no expert but two improvements come to mind to increase current. 1. Greatly increase service area. For example slice up the lemons and use sheets of metal. 2. On individual lemons bring the positive and negative electrodes closer together. Thereticaly it should lower the ESR (basically resistance) and hopefully increase the amps. I would also recommend reading about Standard Electrode Potentials and look at some tables of metals. Finally if you want a full proof homemade battery try a nickle (coin) paper towel Copper sandwitch soaked with bleach mixed with salt. I tried this once and got .5v and 300mah. This similar to an aluminum air battery only the bleach is like a super charger. This can power a small motor, and might make a cool episode. Hope this was helpful.
15:20 Ohm's law is incorrect, its should be volts=amps X Ohms (V=IR)
ohms are the resistance in the circuit (Ω)
watts = amps x volts is the formula for power and is written P=VI or W=VI not V=IR
Just found your guys videos today and I already think im hooked.
When life gives you lemons make a taser

I regret that I have but only one thumbs-up to give.
You needed to be pinned.
Ha, very punny, sir.
so glad you guys have done so well! I cant wait for you to hit 1 million!
Jason: careful brian, we’re dealing with forces we don’t understand.
Me: Isn’t that the point of this channel?
This was the most education I've voluntarily stayed to watch! Very Interesting, and funny!
Parallel increases current, serial increases voltage.
Took us a while, but I think we understood by the end.
Here are a few things that I think might help you out a bit. If you can determine what the capacitance of your capacitor is you will be able to determine how much charge is stored in the capacitor. This equation is q=CV where q is the charge (in coulombs) C is the capacitance in Farads (you will probably need to convert from microFarads to Farads) and V is the voltage. Since you know what the voltage of a AAA battery is and if you can determine the capacitance of the capacitor you will know what amount of charge is required to fully charge the capacitor.
After attaching the lemon battery to the capacitor, you will need to measure the amperage flowing into the capacitor (clamp on gauge works best for this and can be found at any hardware store). Now, amperage is just a measure of the amount of charge flowing per time (Coulombs/second) and by knowing the amperage and the amount of coulombs required to charge the capacitor the required amount of time to charge the battery can be determined. (Amperage=Coulombs/second-------plug in amperage and required coulombs from equation q=CV). This will give you a rough guess so that you don't have to sit around for 24 hrs waiting to charge if it should charge in just an hour.
Another issue that I believe that you are having is that the LED is acting as a short circuit and is allowing any charge that you might be building up to dissipate through it. I would attempt to remove any unneeded components in the stun gun to prevent any parasitic loss. I would also increase the number of lemons and connect in parallel (to increase amperage). Another method could be to try different household items that might be able to provide a larger current. I have not tried these but it intuitively makes sense to use more of a liquid to increase amperage due to the increased mobility of the electrolytes in the solution. (Try Coca-Cola, salt water, bleach or lemon juice)
Ohm's law does not refer to watts. Watts are power while Ohm's law is about resistance. Resistance is measured in Ohms.
gottabweird Yep. Ohms law is based around Voltage, Resistance and Current(amperes).
MattTheBoss Yeah power is described in an other set of equations.
Yea,those "other equations" being voltage * current. = Watts (aka Power.)

Oh how I've missed some of these original episodes. And that intro, man where has it gone? Love y'all hope y'all can rewatch some of these old episodes with me
Missed opportunity for Cave Johnson quotes
I think there will probably be a few in the outtakes.
Hi Aircraft Mechanic here, Basic concept of a battery comes from a chemical reaction between the two metals. layman term is that the metal is corroding and your controlling how it corrodes and using the current from the corrosion. To get a better volts and amps you need more dissimilar metal also known as "GALVANIC". Very important term when it comes to batteries. The whole point of them lemon is to be a electrolyte to pass current from one metal to the other. Obviously there are better electrolytes to use. But Look up a galvanic chart to find better metals to use.
*Dont search up Lemon Party, I warn you*

As an electronics tech I loved seeing you guys discovering and testing these electrical properties for yourselves, but this is one of those videos that would probably have done better (e.g. holding _most_ people's attention better) by having an expert guest like you did with, say, the mead (honey wine) episode.
Modern Rouge=dumbest and funniest things ever.
By coiling the copper wire, you're making the lemon wet cell less effective because the length is longer and so the resistance is greater than if it were straight.
I feel like we should start a GoFundMe to buy Brian a couple new shirts as he wears the same ones every episode. :)
Because they probably film a bunch of segments in one day for different videos.
Come in, do some lemon junk, some trash bag weapons, make some hooch, go home. Repeat.
A lot of these require a setup and a long wait, so he probably films a bunch of them at a time to save time. There's no point setting up a lemon battery and just going home. No, work on another video while you wait.
The hooch took weeks, some of the improvised weapon s take hours to dry or cure... etc.
It's just good business and common sense, also you can often see other projects in the background from other videos.
They said they were going to change the lemons to be running in parallel, and they were in series at the time. So they unhooked all the lemons, organized them vertically rather than horizontally, and then hooked them up in series again but in a z formation this time. 😂 I love this show
I died after “do you wanna have a lemon party?”
