Despite any internal flaws with the bow, one issue with accuracy is that their arrow is being shot from the wrong side. A right-handed shooter crosses the arrow to the left side of the bow, and vice-versa for left-handed shooters. You can't look down the arrow if it is not aligned with the bow, permanently aiming to the right.
Many eastern styles of archery have it shot from the right side as it allowed them to fire off arrows faster. Aiming was more about intuition and instinctive while western styles usually had it on the left side. Obviously, they aren't experienced in archery so having the arrow on the left would have been better for this since it is easier to pick up.
You aren't a true RUclips'r until you refer to ideas and thoughts as _"imaginary comments in my head"._ That's true dedication, and living that entertainer lifestyle! Brian is a treasure.
The editing on this episode is beautiful. I found myself cackling every couple of minutes between the shenanigans of our rogues and the smug sarcasm of their video editor. Brandt, you're awesome
I made bows out of PVC pipe for electrical installations when I was a kid back in the '70s. I can guarantee it was a real weapon. A 2 " nail at the end of a wooden rod was perfect for an arrow. Bricklayers rope served perfectly and were durable.
Please also do an Episode on Disguises. You'd both come up with an disguise and to test them you might meet at a cafe or something. While one of you puts on their disguise in the cafe's restroom the other leaves the cafe and sits down on a bench around the corner. The person on the bench would wear a vest or a coat with about 3-5 decent sized buttons. Of which he would unbutton any number he wants. The disguised person than has to walk past the person on the bench, count the buttons and walk around the next corner. From there he has to text the number of still buttoned buttons to win. The guy on the bench maybe has to take a picture of the disguised guy to prove that he recognised him. Or he just calls him out when he walks by. Either way is fine. Then you'd switch roles.
Some tips for future archery endeavors. Use feather fetching instead of plastic vanes. The feathers collapse as they pass the riser (where your hand is on the bow) and don't kick out as bad. Secondly, when using your fingers instead of a thumb draw, you want to place the arrow on the top of your knuckles on your bow hand. Lastly, avoid bulky gloves as they prevent a smooth release. Oh, and keep that elbow up...straight line from bow hand to elbow.
Ive been waiting sooo long for this one and im going to go out on a limb and say the injury counter is gonna be reset Edit: ways you could improve it 1. heat the end sections in one go and use a long bit of wood to get an even taper 2. use a round file and cut the grooves at an angle to hold the string better 3. tape on an arrow rest to help when aiming 4. *LEARN ARCHERY BETTER!!!*
3:50 "How bad do you think the chemicals we're inhaling are ?" Well, when burnt PVC creates hydrochloric acid, but I'm sure i didn't get hot enough for that right? ...right? The atmosphere in this episode was great enough that I don't even care if the bow couldn't kill orcs reliably.
My brothers and I have been using PVC bows for our own version of LARP that we play; at one point we put foam pads on curtain hangers to use as arrows.
Brian, don’t leave the bow strung, it’s not good for it. Especially with PVC, at room temp it’s slightly pliable, and if you refrigerate it, it becomes brittle. So definitely don’t leave it strung. Just a tip. Also, I expect that only you read the comments. Sorry, Jason.
LJTwiggy the opposite. Jason often comments from his own account that's all. *I don't mean to leave it strung that will destroy the little strength it has I meant that Jason is who reads the comments usually not Brian
You guys did great! :D I've made some recurve PVC bows myself, can recommend Backyard Bowyer if you didn't find it already. Good job on the aluminium foil heat reflector!
I made one about 1 1/2 years ago andni used fiberglass druveway markers to increase the power inside the pvc pipe, which allowed me to make it shorter for better comfort
I really enjoyed this video. And, while I haven't made a pvc bow myself, I have a few suggestions that could help. First, with as easy as it was to bend, you probably could make a recurve without much trouble, and not only will it improve the power of the bow, it'll be less likely for the acting to slide off. Two, if you don't have a dremel tool (why wouldn't you, they are awesome!) you should definitely invest in one and get some carving bits. You could, for example, use one to make a quick, smooth notch for the string that's less likely to wear out the loop of the string. Third, if you're shooting right-handed (and not on horse back), the arrow goes along the left side of the bow, not the right. Fourth, you really should work on your form to get more consistent shooting (not that what you were doing want fun to watch). Fifth, after making the bow, find out what the draw weight is so you can get the right arrows for it. The last one is a bit complicated, but the reason has to do with what's called the archer's paradox. When launched from a bow, arrows bend back and forth...meaning the tip doesn't go in a straight line. All arrows have a spine rating which determines how much that happens based mainly on the weight off the bow. You actually want some "bendiness" as the string and shaft are in line which causes the arrow to get deflected, which the "bendiness" corrects for (simplified explication). Again, I think this was talked about in the mounted archery episode. Anyway, I'd love to see an episode where you revisit now making and see if you can improve on your pvc bow. Basically, I'm hoping you can manage to more effectively shot the dummy (and not reset the injury counter 😝).
Dustin the WIN! Still wasn't the "simplest way" I made mine a few years ago with a thinner pipe, paracord, and a file. Just cut notches in each end and tied the cord. Works great.
I was actually planning on doing that but decided I didn't need the extra power. Instead, since I didn't have any arrows, I cut the rods into arrow length. p.s. bad idea. my hands were covered in fiberglass slivers xD
I love so much that the beginning started with Jason being afraid of altering the integrity of the pvc and then they later decide to heat it to curve the unit and decrease the draw power of it. I love how much improvising you guys do 😂 I’ve wanted to work with you guys so long you’re so funny
Should've done 1/2 inch, I used to make these all the time and you can easily get 40lb draw with the effectiveness of a 75lb And you're right handed so put the arrow on the left side of the bow and slightly tilt it
While heating it up and increasing the bend made it easier to string and possibly made it a little bit more structurally sound, it heavily reduces power and accuracy, so take that into account if you decide to make your own.
You guys should do some sort of short Rogue series... Potentially make some videos comprised of the some of the most popular tricks and tips on the Modern Rogue and implement them in real life settings, rather fictitious or day-to-day events. For example: A medieval theme episode featuring a struggling peasant with horseback archery and lots of dagger/short fighting. An assassin using some of these skills to take down a target as he picks locks and uses krav maga. Or even simply a magician using these card tricks in cool ways to flee from some dangerous situation. The shows could potentially use 10+ modern rogue skills per episode. This could spark interest to new subscribers as well as show tribute to the most popular videos. Anyways, just an idea, keep up the great work!
Another method for making a pvc bow requires 2 pvc pipes, and I'm going from memory but I think its a 3/4" and a 1/2" pipe, you use a saw to cut a saw kerf out of the 1/2" pipe and jam the 1/2" pipe into the 3/4" pipe. You then get a fiberglass rod, like an electric fence post that you can get at a farm supply store. You cover that fiberglass rod in electrical tape so that it will press fit inside the bow. This provides the flexibility. You can then either cut notches in the ends or affix some kind of a cap that will hold the string. Note, with this bow it will start out with a pretty high draw weight, but due to PVC forming over time, it will loose its power. Also, make sure you check the ends of your bowstring regularly for nicks and cuts, since catching a taught bowstring in the face is not a good time.
Also, having watched more of the video at this point, they're placing the arrow on the wrong side of the bow. You want the arrow to be on the side of the bow as the hand holding the bow. If that's somewhat hard to understand, think of it like this. If you are holding the bow in your left hand, you want the arrow to rest on the left side of the bow, or on the back knuckle of your left hand. I suggest if you make a bow like this, make an arrow rest by taking an additional piece of the PVC you made the bow with and cutting it so there is a ring and tooth on top of the ring. Heat the base of the tooth so it can be bent at a 90 degree angle to the outside of the ring. Cut a large, roughly 1/4 of the ring, section out of the arrow rest so that it can snap onto the bow. This will help keep your hand from getting cut up by the fletching.
*You guys are great* 😋 Seriously though J & B you guys are awesome and funny to watch. Love scam school and modern rogue can't wait for every new episode.
You have to put fiberglass rods in the middle of the pvc pipe. Then shape it. It will increase the tension of the bow and cause it to spring back faster, increasing velocity
GREAT VIDEO! Best way to learn is to learn from your mistakes... and in this video we learn from their mistakes lol.. ive been watching diy pvc bow videos all week and i usually have the same questions after each video. These guys basically answered every small in between step questions that i had thought up frequently. Liked and Subscribed... --Id say watch the video that has the most legit bow to your choosing. and then watch this video after you have the first one memorized basically//ready to start.
you should check out ZNA productions, on his channel he puts fiberglass rods in the pvc to increase the draw weight of the bow, he has done multiple designs.
For anyone else coming back through this comment chain, also check out the Backyard Bowyer. His entire channel is pretty much just about making bows out of pvc. He's a master at it. ZNA is pretty good too, but he's more like adept than master.
Was recently in Japan and some of the places had buckwheat pillows. If you like are nice firm pillow, it may before you. If you like the fluffy airy pillow then it is likely not an option you want to venture down.
There's something about The Modern Rogue that makes it so much different, and so much better, than 99% of other content on RUclips; but I can't quite put my finger on it...
Its fun to watch u guys figure shit out. U don't have a clue what you doing but you guys don't let that stop you! I am a bow Builder this was hilarious!
The reason there's one larger loop on the bowstring is that some bows are strung by sliding the larger loop down the arm of the bow, fitting the smaller loop at the end of the other arm and then, when you bend the bow, you slide the large loop up the arm and into the retaining slots - rather than trying to bend the bow far enough to get the loop over the _end_ of the arm.
To help prevent the bowstring from fraying, you can use some electrical tape or heat shrink tubing over the grooves cut on either end. this will cover up the sharp edges. Another thing to do is to file the edges so that they are rounded.

what side you place your arrow on is personal opinion, also looking down an arrow is plain impractical
Well, technically this can be countered by using your thumb draw. Which i suspect was the way they were learning the horse archery.

Heh. That sounds like fun. I've been trying to structure a disguise episode for a while now.
Next video: “Accidentally” Shooting Brian
what do you mean accidentally
Tobytoes shhh, “accidentally”
+1
you shoud have called it the bowner :)
Hahhaha
Alex Timmermans that's funny
The Modern Rogue the fact that I KNOW this is Brian responding
I love the "lore bits" or whatever you wanna call em! (Ex. DAVE intro and bow stats.)
Dave is rubber Jason is glue. Whatever you shoot at him bounces back and sticks to you.
Ive been waiting sooo long for this one and im going to go out on a limb and say the injury counter is gonna be reset
Edit: ways you could improve it 1. heat the end sections in one go and use a long bit of wood to get an even taper 2. use a round file and cut the grooves at an angle to hold the string better 3. tape on an arrow rest to help when aiming 4. *LEARN ARCHERY BETTER!!!*
You sir, called it
groknar likes the video
3:50 "How bad do you think the chemicals we're inhaling are ?" Well, when burnt PVC creates hydrochloric acid, but I'm sure i didn't get hot enough for that right? ...right?
The atmosphere in this episode was great enough that I don't even care if the bow couldn't kill orcs reliably.
My brothers and I have been using PVC bows for our own version of LARP that we play; at one point we put foam pads on curtain hangers to use as arrows.
Brian: "Won't it always be pulling down?"
Disembodied Voice: "It won't be."
Magnificent
Why would you give it a curve? It takes away a lot of the force
Waaruum Daaruum it helps with pressure equalisation
Because they have no idea what they’re doing. That’s what makes this amazing, it’s all about guys with no experience and knowledge just giving it a go
Brian, don’t leave the bow strung, it’s not good for it.
Corvo Attano That WAS a joke-I think-but thanks, I didn’t know that. Good for you for knowing that.
You guys did great! :D
I've made some recurve PVC bows myself, can recommend Backyard Bowyer if you didn't find it already.
Good job on the aluminium foil heat reflector!
As an ex-archer i am having SO much fun.
Absolutely love every single video.
I made one about 1 1/2 years ago andni used fiberglass druveway markers to increase the power inside the pvc pipe, which allowed me to make it shorter for better comfort
28:30 It's the Pulp Fiction briefcase. Turns out it was buckwheat
"The imaginary comments in my head are saying..."
There's a lot to unpack from that moment.
God making me
My looks: this will be the straight part
Everything else: and then that
I really enjoyed this video.
I’ve built many pvc bows before. And this was painful. I love everything you guys do and this was really entertaining. But painful.
Bad Builders - would subscribe
You guys deff made a thing!!! N it is undoubtedly having the functionality of the bows ... ALL THE BOWS!!!!! *T.M.R.-4- Lyfe*
I'm cringing. You guys did everything wrong. That was great. I love your videos.
Dustin the WIN! Still wasn't the "simplest way" I made mine a few years ago with a thinner pipe, paracord, and a file. Just cut notches in each end and tied the cord. Works great.
Alex Lawson You can put fiberglass rods inside to increase power as well
I was actually planning on doing that but decided I didn't need the extra power. Instead, since I didn't have any arrows, I cut the rods into arrow length.
p.s. bad idea. my hands were covered in fiberglass slivers xD
Alex Lawson oof, fiberglass slivers are the worst
also they bouce into your face
I love so much that the beginning started with Jason being afraid of altering the integrity of the pvc and then they later decide to heat it to curve the unit and decrease the draw power of it. I love how much improvising you guys do 😂 I’ve wanted to work with you guys so long you’re so funny
Side note. I do have one that I built a couple years ago that I learned from ZNA Productions
That's Incredible! With Skip Stevenson and Sarah Purcell!
I'm sorry DAVE, I'm afraid they have to do this...
Should've done 1/2 inch, I used to make these all the time and you can easily get 40lb draw with the effectiveness of a 75lb
And you're right handed so put the arrow on the left side of the bow and slightly tilt it
I own an english style longbow and when its un-extended its just as flat as a plank of wood.
yeah - cause its an actual bow...
Realized recently why I love this channel so much; it's like a RUclips Mythbusters! (My most favorite show ever!)
Should have brought Backyard Bowyer to this show. He's very adept and has a couple of books on building bows from PVC. Learned a lot from his videos.
What happened to the card shotgun? You know, from the prison build video?
A really advanced special force with high tech weapons vs. one plastic shooty boi
ZNA productions reference?
You guys should have zna productions on, he makes a bunch of stuff like the pvc bow in this vid and weapons
You guys are great! 👍👍
You guys are great! 👍👍
THANK YOU BRIAN AND MURPHY!!!! YOU JUST REPLACED ALL MY OTHER RUclips CHANNELS!!! 😄😄😄😄
Outstanding!
Bruh, *the same day as **_The King of Random._* Love your vids
That one Guy true, but there is a big difference on how they made it
Bjma DK Yeah, TKoR actually knew what he was doing.
true. Same concept
ZNA Productions was the first person to make a video on this kind of DIY pvc bow.
Beets and Cheese i dont care about that. Its just more or less about the fact it was the same day as another channel im subbed to.
This episode was so laid back, I loved it
Another method for making a pvc bow requires 2 pvc pipes, and I'm going from memory but I think its a 3/4" and a 1/2" pipe, you use a saw to cut a saw kerf out of the 1/2" pipe and jam the 1/2" pipe into the 3/4" pipe.
In the out-takes, Brian and Jason get fought off by a Dungeons and Dragons Master wielding a lightbulb.
The Modern Rogue The heat gun looked dangerous though (in your hands) ;)
It hurts seeing you guys with the fletching the wrong way round. I'm sure you destroyed a couple of feathers and didn't get why, right?
Probably. You see the horseback archery episodes we did?
Actually I think that's the only one I haven't seen, not counting cocktail videos.
They made a good larping bow
*You guys are great* 😋
Seriously though J & B you guys are awesome and funny to watch.
“You guys are great!” (🤗)
you should check out ZNA productions, on his channel he puts fiberglass rods in the pvc to increase the draw weight of the bow, he has done multiple designs.
Jonathan Otten but if you did the stringing like how they did it it would break if you do this use the in-between the leg method
true, by actually bending the PVC instead of heating it up and forming it, it should already become more powerful
If u guys do this again checkout a video by zna productions on pvc bows it's really good
That's where I learned how to make my first PVB bow
You guys read my mind. He also has a video on the recuve
You guys are great👍👍
I would so watch bad builders
Yes!!
Another thing to do is to file the edges so that they are rounded.
good call!
