    I learned to play backgammon in Turkey while in the Navy. Bought a game in the Exchange, and it was the exact one Brian has. When I got out of the Navy and went home, in 76, I started going to a bar that had multiple backgammon tables and we'd play for drinks. That escalated. The doubling cube can run a $2 bet game up to $128 pretty darned quick. Also, a good grasp of the odds of rolling certain numbers can help a lot! p.s. Still have that game...just checked!

He played the game and knows the rules. He wasn't there to be a resident expert, just to play along and help Jason understand the rules. I don't understand the hate seeing a leather worker/illusionist not be a perfect backgammon player. Great video and the overlays were fantastic. Love backgammon. Been playing it for over 30 years with friends. Good tutorial on playing but they've missed a lot of the strategy. Its a common tactic to block pins in your opponents home to cause them trouble with getting home. You can also set up a block on every one of your home pins, then take a piece - your opponent then has to sit back and watch you play as they cant move until you free up a position for them. And then we get into the doubling dice, scoring and betting :D
    Edit: also if you clear your pieces while your opponent still has pieces outside their home then you get a "back gammon". It's worth bragging rights even if you're not keeping scores :)

    This video is basically CJ playing a game of Backgammon against himself...

  • @eddieballgame
    @eddieballgame Год назад

    The game, at its' core, is a race. It is not a game of luck, but a game of position & probabilities. Early game one is obligated to take risks & place his/her checkers in positions to create good points & particularly in each home's board.
    Because the early game entails each side not having a strong home board it is essential to take said risks to develop a position which can generate more wins to include using the cube to cash.
    Playing this way (non-safe if you will) allows for more dice rolls to be more useful. There is no control over what you roll, just how you play each roll. Stacking your checkers on a few points is a recipe for disaster & will, almost, always lead to defeat...against a competent opponent, of course.
    Backgammon is a beautiful, yet cruel game. One can make the correct play & lose, while making the wrong play & win. The key to success is consistently playing correctly based on the top 'bots' Extreme Gammon (XG) & GNU (a free program).
    Watching the pros online is a great way to improve, but playing is the most rewarding & fun...as long as one can handle losing. :)

And if you roll Acey Deucey, after you make your 1 and 2 move, roll one dice, and whatever the dice reads, that's your four piece move. I never heard of choosing any four that you want.

If someone makes a mistake, and nobody catches it at the time the mistake was made, it is retroactively considered legal, and play continues as normal. This is to prevent people from pointing out any mistakes that may or may not have been made multiple turns ago and forcing play to revert to a more favorable position.

    You see the fundamentals of backgammon are actually easily acquired by heavy drinking.

    My father and one of my cousins would play each other weekly, religiously. They would play for a couple hours at a time.

    My family had a nice backgammon set but no one knew how to play. I kept buying backgammon sets hoping they would have instructions. I ended up with like 5. I eventually gave up. Thank you Modern Rogues.

      I remember my parents bought me a set when I was a kid. But even with the instructions that it came with. None of it made any sense.

    Never played backgammon (even though my family always had a set) but i used to play mancala which is a similarly ancient game

    This is a great avenue for the rogue to go down, play shogi, go, carrom, just these old ass board games that have entertained for thousands of years, very much in line with the gentlemen aspect of the rogue lol
