From cooking steaks with thermite in a garage to melting a car with 80 lbs of thermite and getting the fire department (and police??) called on you, truly a Modern Rogue character arc 🤣
My father worked in an underground coal mine in Australia for a while in the mid-80s. Aluminium (Aluminum) foil in any form was banned underground for this reason. Due to the salt in coal seams, rust is a big issue for steel and iron parts and infrastructure. There is also a lot of heavy, high-impact machinery used underground. The concern was that a discarded piece of foil from a lunch wrap, or candy wrapper could end up near some rust, and something heavy might impact it, causing a small but intense fire...in a coal mine.
That's exactly the kind of thing where your average worker will complain about 'overzealous safety procedures'... But it's 100% the right call to make. People complain about 'silly' things like that, and how unlikely it is to ever matter.... But even once is enough to make clear how important these things are to follow. Even aside from the massive harm it would cause, and the lives endangered... Simple practicality suggests that setting your coal mine on fire is a good way to make sure you have no more coal to mine.
Unless they also banned zinc and galvanized metals, that rule is just ignorant fear. Zinc will react with iron oxide in almost the same way as aluminum, it's just less known. In either case tho, zinc or aluminum won't ever react under normal conditions. Thermite is only possible due to the large surface areas and fine mixing of the power. Standard rust on it's own doesn't even make good thermite, you need very fine iron oxide and very fine aluminum. And not to mention, even in powdered form they're extremely hard to ignite. Something like aluminum foil sitting in a pile of rust poses less of a fire hazard than a flashlight.
Hold on, there might be another reason for the no aluminum rule. In reading about blasting I’ve found than normal blasting caps were aluminum but mining blasting caps were made of copper and the reason stated was hazardous gasses produced after the explosion that could linger in the mine.
This is what Modern Rogue is supposed to be imo. For the last several months, it has felt more like Scam School. @@biosaber585 Except it can be stopped by sucking up the heat, which is why water works. But you need to provide the water fast enough so that it absorbs the heat faster than the fuel generates it, which certainly wasn't happening with that leaky tap.
@@reverse_engineered nope not with thermite. Its self oxidizing nature and extreme heat means there's no real method to stop it. Thermite burns around 2200 C or 4000 F as for a reason not to use water it generate hydrogen gas due to the iron being generated from the reaction interacting with the water which can cause an explosion. Official cited methods to extinguish really don't exist, basically the answer is let it burn itself out and prevent extra fuel entering the mix and/or getting access to highly expensive and difficult to source chemicals and/or materials to smother the mixture. Id like to remind you, thermite is used for underwater welding, water does frankly nothing to stop thermite its just too hot. This isn't something that's even on par with like a full blown house fire or chemical fire, thermite is akin to welding reactions and water flash boils at those heats. Even things like liquid nitrogen do too. Liquid oxygen I've seen considered but its VERY expensive and hard to transport and not a great answer
Oh... Don't take this the wrong way please, but I clicked on this thinking it was an older video that I had forgotten watching. Lately when I think of you guys it's everyone at a picnic table learning a game or compilations of "What shouldn't we have eaten" and such. Genuinly happy you guys are still messing around and making mistakes lol. Don't stop with the picnic tables and complications, but I also want more of this classic stuff!
When I was younger I was experimenting with other mixes of thermite. Couple of things- some ARE explosive, also I have had one particular mix auto-ignite. Once a reaction starts, you are likely to realize you are totally unprepared for it. It’s a miracle I wasn’t disfigured or killed.
I think they should do a episode of some kind with the fire department …. I want to know what the fire department thoughts was on having to show up and deal with these knuckleheads in their thermite
Gotta love that they mention the other video they did where they blew up a car, and how clearly none of the same procedures from that video have been done in this one, and they didn't even mix the thermite, you can see clear stripes of pure aluminum and pure rust throughout the mixture because they took tens of pounds of powder at a time and poked a stick at it a couple of times before pouring it over the roof of a car that's just SURROUNDED by grass and trees. which they didn't even soak in water beforehand to limit the risk of fire spreading, despite there being a sprinkler visible 10 feet behind them. And yet I love these two guys so so much, I hope to see so much more of these two.
This is the episode where Brian an Jason renew their entries on all their Federal Watch Lists. You know, the watch lists are kinda like subscriptions that way, ya gotta keep your name from going inactive due to non-use. Glad to see you boys are using all that Disney money responsibly!
But also you see Jason spraying a dry powder extinguisher on the car at one point - that won't do *anything*. Powder extinguishers are about creating a barrier between a flammable liquid and the air, but thermite provides it's own oxygen! There's only two ways to put out thermite, get it below the critical temperature (which is extremely hard to do) or wait until it burns itself out.
This takes me back to the time where I had a major f*** up... I ended up with a massive 2nd degree burn all over my hand from messing with thermite. Worst pain ive expirenced... and I was lucky I didnt end up with scar tissue.
@@BryceCastillo Most/Many fire apparatuses have a water tank so they can start fire-fighting immediately until a water source can be obtained. This one had 400-500 gallons of water, which is a lot, but not much for a structure fire. Tanker trucks can carry 1,000+ gallons of water. The truck in the video is intended for wildland fires, often far from other fire infrastructure, so it's also great for small fires that aren't convenient to access with standard fire trucks.
Only suggestion is, maybe bring back the lo-fi music? Whatever that background music is with the angelic sound has always been so distracting and annoying
Ya know how in certain career paths -- often those in medical, law enforcement, and other first responder ones -- that the people who were in them have "this one story". Ya'll just added to those guys collection. "These two idiots lit 80 pounds of THERMITE on top of an old Honda Civic. To see what it would do."
I just did the math out for how much energy was released in the thermite reaction alone. Going roughly by the amounts they said, 60 lbs of thermite (3 parts iron oxide to 1 part aluminum by weight) releases as much energy as 112 lbs of TNT (assuming a complete reaction and standard ambient conditions). You guys are absolute mad lads.
It was a clear blue-sky day, and there was definitely a column of black smoke less than a mile from them... I think they solved the mystery on their own. (and now I gotta figure out something special to say thank you!)

IIRC, You are lucky to NOT try to adding water to the thermite while it was burning. At those temperatures the heat will strip what bonds the oxygen and the hydrogen together. You'll get flammable hydrogen adding to the fire and more oxygen to feed the flames.
Even without the preview, this was so scary during the buildup, you knew it was gonna go wrong. THEY knew it. They really need to be out in the country. Although, even out here you do get the curious folks stopping by.

Liquid oxygen I've seen considered but its VERY expensive and hard to transport and not a great answer
as a long time fan of modern rogue, This is probably my favorite video from you guys in a long time
Wow! now this is the content I'm here for
Ping pong balls would've made this episode so much more smokier.
This is the best content they've posted in a while. More of this!
Doing this in a cardboard box with a fresh stick is really the epitome of science adjacent
Brian, gigling of excitement and being nervous, like a kid who knows did something wrong, while the thermite revaged the car made my day.
I'm so glad you guys are safe. Goodness. This is what happens when you let all your intrusive thoughts run wild.
Yeeeeess, congratulations on getting on Disney+. Love the episode
I think they should do a episode of some kind with the fire department …. I want to know what the fire department thoughts was on having to show up and deal with these knuckleheads in their thermite
I LOVE that Murphy is even wearing the Walter Sobchak aviators 😂
YOU’RE OUT OF YOUR ELEMENT BRIAN
Car fires are extremely hot. I've driven by a few on the interstate and you can feel the heat with the windows up from 50ft away, it's wild.
Yesssssss it’s finally out! “Thanks BRYCE” - Passive aggressive JRY voice.
lol
This seems like something you should redo out at Drive Tanks near Uvalde. Invite Matt Carriker and the Slo Mo guys too
Gotta love that they mention the other video they did where they blew up a car, and how clearly none of the same procedures from that video have been done in this one, and they didn't even mix the thermite, you can see clear stripes of pure aluminum and pure rust throughout the mixture because they took tens of pounds of powder at a time and poked a stick at it a couple of times before pouring it over the roof of a car that's just SURROUNDED by grass and trees. which they didn't even soak in water beforehand to limit the risk of fire spreading, despite there being a sprinkler visible 10 feet behind them.
And yet I love these two guys so so much, I hope to see so much more of these two.
"Don't try this at home."
Got it. I'll try it in the Walmart parking lot.
I'm watching Hacking the system right now! I'm so happy for y'all! Keep killing it!
When everything is wrong, yet so right also. This is why I love this channel.
“This episode of Modern Rogue brought to you by our local Fire Department.”
This is the episode where Brian an Jason renew their entries on all their Federal Watch Lists. You know, the watch lists are kinda like subscriptions that way, ya gotta keep your name from going inactive due to non-use. Glad to see you boys are using all that Disney money responsibly!
80 POUNDS of thermite!? Were you trying to bore your way to China!? 😂😂 This is the most unhinged Modern Rogue episode in a while and I love it
Fun Fact: Thermite burns hot enough to cause water to explosively decompose into H2 and O2. It's why you should never spray water on thermite.
I may have designed that fire truck. Fun little (ha!) off-road apparatuses. Shame it wasn't one of the Pflugerville ones, those are a bit fancy...
I didn’t know realize had trucks that didn’t need hydrants!
The truck in the video is intended for wildland fires, often far from other fire infrastructure, so it's also great for small fires that aren't convenient to access with standard fire trucks.
oh that's RAD!
THANK YOU FOR FINALLY LISTENING AND MAKING OLD SCHOOL VIDS, MUCH LOVE ❤
Only suggestion is, maybe bring back the lo-fi music? Whatever that background music is with the angelic sound has always been so distracting and annoying
I've seen a lot of stuff done with thermite but I've never seen that much thermite all go at once. Very nice.
This is what I'm here for! I kind of fell off recently as things seemed to have changed but love this content.
5lbs Iron Oxide coming to a T-Shirt near you ( maybe, hopefully but probably not )
“Who thought this was a good idea?”
Well it was certainly AN idea
now my curiosity is getting to me... were they just driving by and see the smoke bellowing or did one of you guys call for it?
It was a clear blue-sky day, and there was definitely a column of black smoke less than a mile from them... I think they solved the mystery on their own. (and now I gotta figure out something special to say thank you!)
@@ModernRogue OMG that is gold hahaha "Aye steve what is that black plume of smoke?" "Oh out near them modern rogue guys?" "ahhh shiit better come check it out because that looks bigger than their fire pit"
Next Episode; Modern Rogue: Behind the bars
Looks like those prison cooking series really paid off.... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
IIRC, You are lucky to NOT try to adding water to the thermite while it was burning. At those temperatures the heat will strip what bonds the oxygen and the hydrogen together. You'll get flammable hydrogen adding to the fire and more oxygen to feed the flames.
A new motto for the modern rogue: we have the fire department on call
Even without the preview, this was so scary during the buildup, you knew it was gonna go wrong. THEY knew it. They really need to be out in the country. Although, even out here you do get the curious folks stopping by.
Now, I'm not a professional chef or anything, but I'm pretty sure y'all over-seasoned your car.
It's actually crazy to see you gettin on National Geographic! I remember discovering Scam School years ago, and now you're melting cars. Congrats on all you guys have accomplished!
You guys should hire me as your safety guy. I've been blacksmithing since 2019 and haven't blown myself up! It's not much but I would have had particulate masks for you guys!
I have this saying:
"If you're going to do something stupid, at least be smart about it."
I noticed a continuously running hose in the background, welding masks, and good clearance between the flame/people/trees.
Yes, you did something stupid. And also you acted with caution and care.
That's a very generous interpretation, and I thank you for it. -Brian
Coulda used that fire be gone thing you tried that did well in the extinguisher episode. Congratulations to the MR team on their roaring (pun fully intended) success.
For obvious reasons I am really glad you didn't have to roll it back in this one guys :D
Finally started getting recommended this channel again
I spent a couple decades in a steel mill, 11 in the caster with ladle met. When they would add they alumina to the ladle, the temp would spike to between eight and eleven thousand degrees from 2800 to 3100 degrees Fahrenheit.
This is exactly why you should have someone experienced with explosives BEFORE you finish planning an idiotic idea involving explosives.
