    I'm utterly baffled that every idea for improving ChromeOS, including those coming directly from Google, involve undoing or undermining the very things that attracted me to the platform in the first place.

    Dear Chris. Thank you for amazing content throughout the years. I was wondering thought If you could make a Windows 8.1 debloat, or atleast one-driver, telemetry removal script of sorts. We have an old laptop which does not run well even with debloated windows 10. Win 8.1 seem to work fine, but the bloatware is quite annoying :) thank you !

    It is snappy but bear in mind your hardware is not exactly weak to begin with. The problem with most of the chromebooks is that they are cheap but also - as a rule of thumb - not the best hardware around. Last time I asked for the exact model you had because it looked kind of expensive - and it is not very cheap, indeed. Which is not ideal for a chromebook which are expected to be cheap - especially that they are somewhat limited in capabilities or upgradeability anyway.

  • @lettuce7378
    @lettuce7378 3 года назад +4

    Ok, i actually kind of hate the idea of chromebooks in the first place, they are modern examples of netbooks, computers that shouldn't exist anymore. I literally can go out and buy a secondhand laptop that has better specs, more storage and COSTS LESS than a chromebook with much worse specs. At that point the chromebook is reduced to basically e-waste as the secondhand laptop will beat it in every way, except maybe portability.
    I get that lots of people just use chrome or another browser on their laptops and that's fine but my point being you can find something cheaper and BETTER easily.
    The cherry on top is that those second hand laptops will have windows or macos preinstalled, both of which are far more usable as an actual operating system, and better yet you can install linux on the windows laptops to speed them up and make them even more useful. That means you won't have these idiotic workarounds like installing unofficial package managers and running virtual machines on an already power-starved machine just to have something other than chrome or phone apps on it.
    That's my vent over at least. I liked the video!

    • @justsomeguy8385
      @justsomeguy8385 3 года назад

      Were chromebooks ever useful? Netbooks were at least a good option for a really cheap and small laptop with great battery life.

    • @lettuce7378
      @lettuce7378 3 года назад

      @@justsomeguy8385 netbooks were fine for the time because at that time there wasn't really a good option for a cheap good secondhand laptop since laptops weren't as popular as they are now. Also battery tech in the recent years has gotten so much better, it's hard to find a laptop with truly bad battery life.
      I think chromebooks are useful in a school or office setting as a computer to look something up quickly or to simply be cheap. Nothing much other than that though.

  • @alexberezin3513
    @alexberezin3513 3 года назад +4

    In the previous video you mentioned that you "can be tempted to remove Chrome OS and just install Arch outright". Is that actually possible to do, and if so, is this basically a method to kinda "De-Google" this device? Also, did you try upgrading Debian shell to Sid?

    • @ravitejaknts
      @ravitejaknts 3 года назад +1

      I mean why are buying Chromebook if you are into degoogling.

    • @alexberezin3513
      @alexberezin3513 3 года назад

      @@ravitejaknts There was nothing implying "buying" in my post. The question is out of curiosity and to have fun. But, that being said, imagine you already have one lying around, gathering dust (maybe you were given one as a present or a studying tool, or bought it way back, whatever). You can try various things with it, having fun in the process, probably finding more actual use for the machine you considered useless, or you can throw it away. Which one is better? Just a thought.

    • @ChrisTitusTech
      @ChrisTitusTech  3 года назад +1

      Yes, you can do this, but most of the chromebooks have hardware specific keys that make it less than ideal. For instance there is no Meta Key and it is missing all the F1-F10 keys and instead has a search key that is required to press to do a F-Key. It would be pretty wierd doing it on a Chromebook, but entirely possible. The other draw back is the starting screen always wants to format and reinstall stock google because of the custom firmware. It just is not a great experience.

    I really want to like ChromeOS and hardware, and I dabble with it. But bottom line, its a very limiting place. Google's Productivity tools like Docs, Sheets and Slides are good but limited. Therefore, like Apple's Mac OS, Google's Chrome OS too needs a native version of MS OFFICE. Google should deal with Microsoft and get them to launch a version of the MS OFFICE for Chrome OS. MS OFFICE should come pre-installed with the Chromebooks. It's the only thing that I miss the most on my Chromebook.

      Chrome os is fine for someone who likes google and chrome, of course if someone dislike chrome then the os is not for them, so if thats your argument that because you dont like chrome, the os is bad, that's a very subjective argument xd

      @@alex_schwartz I never cancel others, I just tell them how much their OS sucks if it's not Linux. :) Seriously, there are people I'd suggest looking at a Chromebook rather than anything else; they're not geeks of any sort, and don't do anything on a command line (they don't even know it exists!). Ditto for Windows and Mac; Chris said in another video how he still uses some Windows-based software because nothing in the other OS Universes works like how it works, or how he likes to work.

      @@firesnake6311 i still trying to find some direct argument about why chrome os sucks in your comment, apparently you are angry because chrome os is gaining popularity instead of (lets say vanilla*) gnu/linux, bro you are a fanboy that's all lol
