    Always been scared of guns, so I went out with a friend yesterday to their preferred range. Shot 9mm, .40S&W, and a Ruger 10/22 at 7 yards. Turns out i love it and am a pretty good shot as well!

    Exceptional video on tips. I'm a 10 year Nevada/Utah CCW/Defensive firearms instructor and am already using all of them, but it's nice to see them addressed like #8, I've told my students for years the 'anything' that makes you feel impaired is a no-no for shooting. If you can't pay 100% attention to the work at hand, save it for another day. Another tip I tell my students, "Go to the range at least every two months, that gives you 6 times of live fire practice each year!" Have a plan on what to work on, don't just put holes into paper.

    I just purchased my first gun (M&P EZ Slide) on Friday and went to the range on Saturday with a women's group. I will be honest that first shot (not from me) scared me and I wasn't sure this was for me, but I just wasn't ready for the loudness of an indoor range & I did have on ear & eye protection. I got over the initial shock of everything and ended up having a very good time with the ladies. I was in the beginner group and actually won a certificate for hitting the bullseye. Can't wait to do it again!

      I spent 3 years in the U.S. Army and I shoot a lot now as a civilian.
      I still get startled by the first couple of shots.
      While grouping and zeroing in the Army, I always made sure I was ready to Rock N Roll and get my shots fast when the Range Safety Officer gave the command to "fire when ready".
      At civilian ranges, I prefer to show up, put on my eyes and ears, watch for a couple of minutes, and then do my load out and continue watching while making ready.
      By the time I'm ready to shoot, my caveman survival instinct has calmed down and my brain has started to tune out the other shooters.
      When you clear your mind, you'll be amazed at how quiet a busy public outdoor range can be. It has a Zen quality to it. Just you, your gun, your target, and a small part of your mind listening for a "cease fire" command

    I started shooting with the same .22 rifle for the past 12 years as it’s a perfect teaching tool to learn the basics of shooting (beyond firearm safety). I love the .22 because I could shoot it all day long. Cheap ammo and it’s not punishing to my shoulder. I use it to introduce friends who haven’t shot before before they decide to transition to something of higher caliber if they are comfortable

    Good tips Julie, I've been at this for a while but you can alway learn something new. Doubling up on hearing protection is a good one especially if you are shooting higher powered rounds like 5.56 or 44 mag. Hearing damage is cumulative and once you lose it you can't get it back. I also liked the load one round for the 1st shot until you know what the recoil is going to be like. You are the best spokesperson out there.

    As you say in #1, know that each range may have a slight variation in their safety rules, with that in mind, I suggest taking a few minutes to watch how the range runs with particular attention to the safety rulse . Even better, watch the activity with the Range Safety Officer (RSO) if possible. The RSO can point out any important details and answer any of your questions that may come up.
    I think the above is a good idea for experienced shooters, shooting a range/club they've never shot at before.
    Great video! Thank you.

    Excellent tips for both the new shooter and those who they meet on the range or take them to the range. Shot a lot when younger. Returned to shooting a few years ago. First instructor took me around at a large gun show where I must have held at least 200 different pistols. S&W M&P fit the best. When I take a new shooter to the range, I will start with a M&P model laser pistol with trigger reset, progressed to a M&P CO2 BB pistol, to a model with recoil, to a M&P Compact .22lr, then to a M&P Compact 9mm. by then, they are relaxed, smiling, and having fun. For treat, I ask if they would like to shoot "one of those terrible black assault rifles." No one turns down an opportunity to shoot a M&P 15-22. Most often, there shooting rhythm accelerates as their smile broadens.

    Heading to the range for the first time soon. Shot before but that was just casual .22 at the lake house. My girlfriends father is a huge shooter for sport and Incase of emergency. I’ve been with her for four years and when we get married I want to make sure I have a good firearm and know how to use it for emergency and for sport. I’ve always been a 2A supporter but my parents never felt comfortable with a gun and I don’t blame them. This helped a lot settle my nerves and remember training and fun go hand in hand.
    I got my FOID when I turned 21 and always felt like the range would be a judgmental place for first time shooters but now I’m super excited and can’t wait to learn proper skill and techniques.

    I start up with 9mm a week ago I used a Glock 17 I reload and chamber the gun myself and almost started rabbit firing it out of enjoyment I was so happy didn’t really take my time to hit the target accurately I didn’t care , I left the place with a big smile out of my face , I wanted to shoot the Beretta M9 but I run out of money sadly and it’s expensive in the place where I live that’s $20 for 15 9mm bullets but it was will worth it .

    .. I'm going to be be honest, I got my license 2yrs ago and have been saving for my first gun (money has been tight, please don't judge) I don't have friends or family that own or have shot guns that I can talk to about my interest, heard about these videos on the radio. Are you allowed to go into a range alone? Or do you have any recomendations on groups to reach out to, to find people who wont judge inexperience or that I am female..

    • @funsizedi88
      @funsizedi88 3 года назад +3

      Female here, similar situation when I was staring out at 21 (32 now). Here's what worked for me BEFORE I went to a range, hope it helps;
      SAFETY IS PRIORITY!!
      Get yourself proper ear/eye protection, comfortable clothes that cover as much as possible (pants/long sleeves/hat). If you have long hair, bun at the nape of your neck or braid it so you can tuck it inside the back of your shirt. Always treat the firearm as if it is loaded and dangerous, handle it accordingly. That means pointed in a safe direction, safety on, clear chamber and a holster that you can control. Learn to field strip and clean your weapon, so that after you go to the range, you know how to care for it properly. Smith and weston has some wonderful videos on everything I mentioned, and maybe joining a group on Facebook before you plan to start going to the range would be helpful as well. There are many ladies groups out there if you prefer.
      1.) Find an instructor that specializes in beginners and women and/or children.
      2.) If possible, you may want to go to an outdoor range the 1st time, the noise level can be jarring for a first time user.
      3.) Make sure you have proper storage, care/ cleaning and field bag to store your range gear. Familiarize yourself with everything to the best of your ability. Mayb just wear your holster around the house for a few days, then put the unloaded firearm in it and wear that around the house a few days, see how it makes you feel. I am 5'2" and DD, so I had a hard time finding a holster that is comfortable for open carry and even harder time trying to find/tailor a shoulder holster for concealed carry, so just keep that in mind. You could even call your local state police and see if they can recommend a holster/firearm for their smaller/female officers.
      I know that was a lot, but hope it helps you find your way to being comfortable and proficient with your firearm. Good luck.

      depends on your strenght and hand control but shouldn't...is it a pistol or a carbine? Carbine will have less recoil... your friend should show ya but grip is key as well especially on a pistol...Hope it went well

    Can someone enlighten me as to why cold soapy water is preferred over warm soapy water? TIA

    • @juliegolob
      @juliegolob 4 года назад +4

      Warm/hot water opens your pores which allows any contaminants easy access into your skin for absorption. Cold water constricts your pores. Hope that helps!

    • @juliegolob
      @juliegolob 4 года назад +3

      @@WatchMilesTV LOL! You bet. Warm is good if you're killing bacteria or viruses, but yes, cold is what you want for the range. Soap will help break down any oils and remove the lead dust. Even if you're shooting jacketed or coated bullets, you could have lead in your primers too. There are lead-free options but they are also usually more expensive. Have a great weekend!

    Outdoors, hot day or not
    Bring plenty of water, sun block, chapstick, and always snacks. Gotta have your POGy bait.
    Gloves are nice to have. I was too stubborn to buy gloves and then got some 1st degree burns in a training class down here in the Mohave desert.
    Bring cleaning supplies. You'd be amazed how a gun can have issues even though you clean it after every session
    - Be sure you are very familiar with field stripping and cleaning your gun BEFORE heading to the range. Nothing sucks worse than having to learn this on the range.
    Medical kit and CAT 3 Tourniquet. Shit happens. A gunshot wound is probably going to hurt just a little bit.
    Speed loader:
    Loading hundreds of rounds with your thumb starts to get sore. And it's slow.
    Alternatively, I like to have a bunch of mags. But I also reload them while my shooting partner(s) take a turn.
    Staple gun, tape, sharpie, paper targets, paper plates
    Yeah, these might be a bit more advanced but, you can hang paper targets with staples, mark your shots with a sharpie, cover holes with tape, and cover groups with a paper plate.
    Extra eyes and ears:
    You'll never know when some nice person on the range comes up to you asking if you have extra protection, and then you get to talking, and they teach you something. Or share wisdom. Or they let you try out their badass freedom seed spreader.
    I recommend going to the local industrial supply or welding supply and getting a whole giant box of foam ear plugs and then a pair of muffs.
    Don't let anybody talk you into the orange plastic horseshoe shaped ear plugs. They hurt. Especially when you add muffs over top. And I recommend doubling up.
