2016 Holden Colorado (Chevrolet S10) LS-X review | CarAdvice

  • Over the past few years, we’ve seen the humble ute grow from a basic working tool into something a bit more flashy, not to mention expensive. All while being the same fundamental machine underneath.
    With most passenger cars and SUVs, we find ourselves recommending the mid-to-high spec variants, as that is where the value is. But with utes, its almost the opposite.
    So today, we’re going back to basics, albeit with a few goodies, to see if the Holden Colorado LS-X does everything it needs to - for less than $40-grand.
    The LS is the most basic crew-cab pickup in the Colorado range, and the LS-X version simply adds a bunch of bundled accessories for only $1000 more - saving you thousands in the process, and resulting in a much more up-market looking ute.
    You get an alloy sports bar, 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps, a bonnet protector and carpeted interior.
    There’s a choice of 7 colours - plus a free 6-speed auto transmission and 3-years free servicing - all out the door for about $38,000.
    That is some $20k less than the top-spec Colorado Z71, for essentially the same car.
    Underneath is the identical 147kW / 500Nm 2.8-litre Duramax turbo diesel. And the same switchable 4x4 system… and looking at it, its pretty sharp - for a Coloardo - so I guess you have to ask, do you really need to spend any more?
    With 500Nm available from 2000rpm, the Colorado has the most torque of any pickup in its class. It gathers pace with or without a load - or when towing (3500kg rating)
    It’s effortless and economical (reading) and quite at home crusing on the highway.
    Around town it still drives like a working ute, but doesn’t have as much of the longitudinal float we’ve seen in other models and is generally pretty comfortable.
    Out here, its in its element. Bumpy and rutted tracks are easily navigated, but it is dry - and the standard fit tyres would be a nightmare in muddy terrain.
    You can switch to 4WD on the fly - or to low-range while stationary - and despite being a big hunk of a thing, is pretty nimble up this rocky climb.
    Sure you bounce around a bit - but that’s what its all about.
    Bottom line - it’s pretty basic, but it is capable and the Colorado is much better suited to being a no-frills ute than a lifestyle warrior. And the LS-X pack just gives you some nice accessories that don’t give you the whole weekend FiFo look when pulling up at Bunnings.
    We’ll see a new Colorado before the end of the year, so as these ones are being dressed up and run out, especially with the free servicing package, the back to basic value approach makes the LS-X a pretty solid proposition.

      +Monkey D Luffy - it's that damn metric system again!
      147kW = 197hp
      500Nm = 369 ft lb

      I know this conversion, man it is more convenient if you'd use hp. Kilo watt sucks. Talk about horses man.

      +Monkey D Luffy the creation of the horsepower is not very scientific. it was reasonable back then, but now it is smarter to use kW as it works with pretty much any form of energy manipulation.

      Are you sure about that? You may be thinking of the Silverado, which is absolutely a bigger truck.

    I just had the displeasure of driving one of these for several hundred kilometers. This has to be the worst vehicle in the segment hands down. Nothing compares to the awfulness of this vehicle. The handle is ok, but everything else terrible. Noisy, terrible driveline vibration, gutless, the interior would have been better designed by a 3 year old, infotainment system slow, buttons and plastics feel like they belong on a cheap Chinese toy. How the reviewer gave any positive comments is beyond me.
