Eh. Pyro is a short ranged class with minimal burst damage. Letting him get around outside of combat a little faster is fine. And it does come with a tangible downside if you use it to gapclose, which Pyro actually might have wanted to do, at least more than Heavy.
health drain is technically just as bad as minicrit damage I say technically only because using it willy nilly makes you incredibly vulnerable. When you want to go fast, you pull out the gru but switch back 3/4ths of the way into the journey. This ensures you aren't caught with 100 health
Just a note about using the G.R.U to gain distance: During or before a stock uber, using it to not only give yourself but also your medic the speed boost allows you to just close the distance that much more to take full advantage of a stock uber.
11:09 I feel like it was a fun thing that two of Heavy's first melee unlocks were named after Soviet/Russian intelligence agencies in the GRU and KGB. Though I feel like naming a weapon with the acronym NKVD and/or FSB is a little tasteless nowadays and a bit harder to not have it feel contrived.
If Ubisoft made TF2 instead of Valve, you just know they'd have added a melee weapon that deals mini-crits for 20 seconds after taking minicrit/critical damage, and called it the Fists of Striking Back.
@@whitemouse2460 yes, I mean exactly that. Cause those acronyms aren't reminders of the current political climate like they are now but funny nods to history...even if that history wasn't pleasant.
@@randomguyblank1616if you get uncomfortable because a weapon has a reference to the modern Russian institutions please never make games, I don’t want you taking the funny out of it, thank you.
The reasoning at the time why the eviction notice deserved a nerf was while slower many heavys preferred it over the Gru. The minicrit de buff on the Gru was a death sentence if you got caught unaware. Last comp players hated the idea the heavy could fight and have impact in the mid fight so complained to valve to have both weapons nerfed into the ground.
My favorite part of the Chocolate is that eating takes up like a third of the recharge time. You can dispense that candy like... like candy. Great for keeping teammates extinguished if there's Scorch-happy Pyro sniping at us. So I like to use it more on Defense. But with the GRU, you're able to get a bit of defensive utility and rollout consistency.
Yeah Zesty's take on it was max cap. Bro just kinda admitted he doesn't know how to use them proper. If you're dying on rollout because of the GRU, that's on you for not taking better notice of the game state around you and holding them out for too long as a result. Always put them away a little earlier than you think when approaching the front and you'll be fine. Even if you're a little squishy by then, it's usually okay to just pause for a little but to regenerate. As much as I know you want to hear hitsounds as soon and as often as possible, you can stand to wait around for just a moment before jump revving around that corner. As a medic player, I know all too well how some (read, a lot of) players just can't be patient for a second or two only for it to bite them in the ass mere seconds later because they desperately need to chase that dopamine. But yeah, in literally every other instance besides rollout, the new GRU are just an objective upgrade from what they used to be.
I think the two unsung upsides of the Jungle Inferno changes are the lack of noticeable downside when at low health and running away (as mentioned at 7:48), since you'll likely take as long to heal up as your health will to fill up anyway, and the fact that you can make quick positioning changes in wide-open spaces without fear of negating enemies' damage falloff Also, it feels good to see a "I disagree with you" take regarding Zesty's opinions for once, rather than a shitfit tirade about him as a person
Yeah feels nice to have an actual disagreement and is coming from someone that don't about half of Zesty's opinions (Mainly his inconsistent cosmetics opinions and random spread discussion)
THANK YOU. I've heard the arguments about the GRU changes, but I've always found them to be a welcome change. I wouldn't call the rebalance a nerf either, since the GRU is now significantly better at retreating without having to worry about a cross-map mini-crit. It's worse for rolling out, sure. But in Casual when there's going to be an Engineer most of the time, you don't need to roll out after the first time and it's a buff in most other cases. I've been using this version of the GRU since the change and I'm going to keep enjoying it.
GRU + Dahlokas bar is my GO_TO loadout. so busted. i love getting there fast and instantly being back at 320 hp and regenerating back to 350 over a few seconds. its so good
I have a bone to pick with the KGB. While in casual random crits on it are balanced by being a weapon of last resort, in medieval mode, it makes the weapon legitimately busted. You are be rewarded with more crits for rolling random crits, on your PRIMARY weapon. Honestly, I think either random crits need to be disabled in medieval mode or the KGB (and the skullcutter too), need random crits disabled.
no to both. heavy is the slowest class, and the kgb makes his dps slower too. other classes can easily just bait swings out and easily punish him. let heavy keep random crits, he's the strongest merc in-lore, he should be able to sometimes knock your block off. the ubersaw, meanwhile...
That last part about the Eviction Notice got me thinking, what if it inflicted bleed for 8 seconds on hit? I know that may sound oppressive so I suggest we also nerf its damage considerably, remove the speed bonus and increase the health drain's effect. I think this would be a net buff as it would allow Heavy to quickly kill a Spy that is in front of him which he previously could not do before
It's pretty useless on Pyro, they gave it to him because the weapon did mini-crits to enemies in the air, the only consistent way to elevate enemies he has is with airblast but that doesn't work anymore
With heavy being the anchor of his team, it only makes sense to run the dalokohs over everything because you are able to stay in the fight longer for multiple reasons, 1. you probably are over healed already from eating it, 2. the recharge rate allows you to throw out the lunchbox more often, especially allowing you to keep your medic alive against aggressive teams and pyros, 3. as you mentioned here the heal rate you get from switching from the gru and eating the sandvich, allow you to heal up while the speed will allow you to keep up with the rest of your team. works with or without a medic
I love FSoaS feeling awkward about saying he's a fan of the KGB while the whole ass video is titled "In Defense of the GRU", another soviet intelligence agency

The main issue with the GRU is that, it's either that, or the fists of steel. Because mainly, who the hell with any braincell is gonna allow Heavy to melee them? He's the slowest class, just turn around and run away, and Heavy's melee is now useless. It's not the other melee weapons are bad per say. Like the KGB are notably pretty good on paper. But the issue remains that unless you're doing a gimmick tactic with the buffalo steak... Almost nobody is going to try and enter melee range of a Heavy if they don't have a dying wish. And if they do, you minigun shreds them anyway. It's kinda like people going in melee range of a Pyro. Even scout doesn't have to do that, and he's the only class that has the mobility to go in and out of that range without taking too much damage. And again it's not even necessary.
If you put the GRU away very early you can effectively get a minor speed boost for free. Not a great speed boost but still getting to the front faster than stock.
Hillarious how the utility meelee is better at fighting people then the actual meelees that are supposed to do the same thing (eviction notice and warrior spirit)
I generally use the FoS more than the GRU, but they definitely have a lot of power if you are smart about them. My brain just shuts off when I'm playing heavy
I never made the connection that the GRU only drains max health so you can use it for much less cost when at low health, that makes it so much more useful

The GRU's better for these changes, though. Definitely a deserved and useful change, just sad to see it universally applied to its poor cousin.
Though as another commenter points out, I feel like the GRU health drain could use a visual indicator for the Heavy's opponents to know he's on low health. Would make fighting against the weapon feel a bit more fluid and dynamic.
14:43 Cough cough. I want to point out how gunboats is extremely centralizing and arguably has little to no downside as it allows soldiers to divebomb but retain more health while still using their primary at the same effectiveness for attack, which even makes it kind of throw off the balance of bypassing soldier's poor mobility at the cost of health as you mentioned earlier... generally speaking soldier can do a lot more with gunboats than a shotgun, I think that might even be why so many soldiers seem to just pretend using a shotgun is a non-option when faced with a pyro who can airblast lol.
I simply don't like how we can't tell if an enemy heavy has their health reduced. In the case of the previous GRU, you knew that someone was marked for death, obviously because of the symbol. It just *feels* like a mechanic that was put on afterwards if we cannot easily discern that it's happening right in front of us, you know?
@@juicejooos The old GRU was honestly pretty strong in 100% crit servers, or any time where you were liable to get crit. Well if Valve ever gets around to that HEAVY update, im sure the Eviction notice among many of his items (like the Buffalo Stack, the king of hidden stats) will be on the list.
I love these gloves so much more now that I actually have to think about using them. Being a Powerjack on the Heavy was way more powerful for the little effort required to use VS how important it is for Heavy to get to point A to B quickly. Now having a real consequence to weigh up makes it far more interesting, how much you want to risk your health to get to the fight faster.
they got better in jungle inferno hear me out if you have a lower base health that means you can die sooner making it so you can use the gru to get to the frontlines faster
3:05 Not particularly related to the GRU but since you brought up this weird quirk of MVM bots' outdated weapon stats, I wanted to bring up an even weirder discovery I had the other day which is that apparently, small robots are still fully stunned by sandman moonshots.
I don’t hate the gru for its new stats, I hate it because now whenever heavy is brought up in comp the conversation always ends in “speedy heavy bad for game”
Don't know if I'm just too old for this channel or not but: the GRU used to be even better than it's marked for death variant because it would drain your health in little damage ticks, meaning using the GRU could actively help any medics on you build uber while simultaneously getting you to the front lines faster.
I love using my GRU+Panic Attack combo, it gives me a dopamine rush when my gloves don't crit on first hit, but I instantly switch and just start blasting

The ideal item to get a heavy to the point from a starting rollout isn't even a heavy item. It's the soldier's whip.

Eh. Pyro is a short ranged class with minimal burst damage. Letting him get around outside of combat a little faster is fine. And it does come with a tangible downside if you use it to gapclose, which Pyro actually might have wanted to do, at least more than Heavy.

health drain is technically just as bad as minicrit damage
I say technically only because using it willy nilly makes you incredibly vulnerable.
The medic doesn't get a boost though, he's 107% move speed. It's still great for the heavy during an Uber though.
@@nathaniel1207 medic can't really push an faster than his heavy though.
I'm surprised how few people have mentioned its synergy with Uber, that seems like one of the best qualities
The sheer terror of an Ubered Heavy positively BARRELING towards you cannot be overstated.
11:09 I feel like it was a fun thing that two of Heavy's first melee unlocks were named after Soviet/Russian intelligence agencies in the GRU and KGB. Though I feel like naming a weapon with the acronym NKVD and/or FSB is a little tasteless nowadays and a bit harder to not have it feel contrived.
what are you on about with the latter part
If Ubisoft made TF2 instead of Valve, you just know they'd have added a melee weapon that deals mini-crits for 20 seconds after taking minicrit/critical damage, and called it the Fists of Striking Back.
"Nowadays"? You mean those acronyms were somehow better in the past?
@@whitemouse2460 yes, I mean exactly that. Cause those acronyms aren't reminders of the current political climate like they are now but funny nods to history...even if that history wasn't pleasant.
@@randomguyblank1616if you get uncomfortable because a weapon has a reference to the modern Russian institutions please never make games, I don’t want you taking the funny out of it, thank you.
the eviction notice nerf will never make sense to me. Like it's legit a bad gru x hot hand atm
@@ZoneEnder nerfed both to the ground? mate have you watched the bloody video?
My favorite part of the Chocolate is that eating takes up like a third of the recharge time. You can dispense that candy like... like candy. Great for keeping teammates extinguished if there's Scorch-happy Pyro sniping at us. So I like to use it more on Defense.
But with the GRU, you're able to get a bit of defensive utility and rollout consistency.
you really don't have to apologize to zesty for anything
In Defense of the Holiday Punch:
pulling them out, like, doubles your chance of not getting shot in general.
crouch and say need a dispenser quintuples it
He is pretty despicable, I'm not sure how you can defend him.
I think the two unsung upsides of the Jungle Inferno changes are the lack of noticeable downside when at low health and running away (as mentioned at 7:48), since you'll likely take as long to heal up as your health will to fill up anyway, and the fact that you can make quick positioning changes in wide-open spaces without fear of negating enemies' damage falloff
Also, it feels good to see a "I disagree with you" take regarding Zesty's opinions for once, rather than a shitfit tirade about him as a person
Yeah feels nice to have an actual disagreement and is coming from someone that don't about half of Zesty's opinions (Mainly his inconsistent cosmetics opinions and random spread discussion)
Can we just agree that Meet your match ruined most of the weapons? Primarily: Eviction notice, Caber, Bison, Base jumper, Sandman?
Sandman nerf was good and the basejumper already sucked lol
Wait, in defense? What is there to defend? The gru's are fine.
GRU + Dahlokas bar is my GO_TO loadout. so busted. i love getting there fast and instantly being back at 320 hp and regenerating back to 350 over a few seconds. its so good
7:30 headshot damage from a rocket
The Eviction Notice is good, you're just using it wrong.
I think this would be a net buff as it would allow Heavy to quickly kill a Spy that is in front of him which he previously could not do before
The additional speed is so important for Heavy that they remain one of Heavy's most important melees.
Zesty also downplayed the reserve shooter for pyro
Not surprising considering it's almost definitely one of his most played classes
Zesty says the reserve shooter is incredibly good what crack are you smoking?
Oh god, I was there for that Zesty Stream.
I remember that he *replied* to me saying "My question is why they nerfed the Eviction Notice the exact same way" (which can be seen at 1:29).
I didn't agree with his placement then, and I still don't.
Eviction Notice would be the worst heavy meele even without the health drain lmao

I just want to know _Why did Valve see a weapon that was objectively Terrible and think "Yeah, that needs a nerf."_
Actually... now that I think about it, they've done that before.
@@LinksYTLink They did it for consistency, but didn't have any buffs in mind to compensate for that. And so the weapon was left in an unusable state.
I disagree with him there too. I mean, you can't agree with everything anyone ever says usually, and while I generally like Zesty Jesus that was just a take I was flabbergasted by
@@mariustan9275 Zesty himself made it pretty clear that he's not all that good at the game, nor is he particularly interested in getting good.
So I don't know why people would take his gameplay opinions seriously. The fine details of TF2's balance aren't his area of expertise.
I def never used the Gru before learning the chocolate synergy. Makes the game a lot more immediate/dynamic feeling when I play as heavy.
Hey, someone referencing Zesty without treating him like shit, that's refreshing.
Yeah, so weird to see Zesty getting clowned on but politely. Makes for a much more enjoyable (less toxic) video.
If you put the GRU away very early you can effectively get a minor speed boost for free. Not a great speed boost but still getting to the front faster than stock.
no, pulling them out takes a chunk of hp instantly to stop people from swapping between them and other weapons for speedboosts with minimal penalties
The GRU even needs defending? I had no idea

Hybrid Fat Scout with Gru is deffinitly a funny one
14:43 Cough cough. I want to point out how gunboats is extremely centralizing and arguably has little to no downside as it allows soldiers to divebomb but retain more health while still using their primary at the same effectiveness for attack, which even makes it kind of throw off the balance of bypassing soldier's poor mobility at the cost of health as you mentioned earlier... generally speaking soldier can do a lot more with gunboats than a shotgun, I think that might even be why so many soldiers seem to just pretend using a shotgun is a non-option when faced with a pyro who can airblast lol.
I think it’s an issue of how good good positioning is over the well of utility the shotgun provides
Headshots, Kritzkriegs, Bushwackas, Jarate, Fan O' Wars, Buff Banners, Skullcutters, Phlogs... really any time where your 300 health was gonna disappear anyway.
