I've got a 1 year old male boxer dog last week, who sadly wasn't walked very much and never taken of lead. He responses well to praise, sit, down learned very quick with no command. We have built a loving bond. He walks OK in garden looking up at me.However he pulls straight away when we are out, distracted by smells etc, he is strong and we find it difficult. I don't want to use a prong collar. Please advise, as daily walking is a big part of our lives.

My boxer was the same way! Interact with them in your walks. Go somewhere with not a lot of people and train with them. If they can just sit practice that and be patient since it’s a ne environment! I find bringing treats in a treat pouch makes my food drive boxer want to be by me and ignore his surroundings! I practiced letting him walk as far as his leash would go and he’d hear a trigger maybe a dog or see a person. I’d tell him to come and sometimes he wouldn’t but once he did I’d reward him with treats and praise, my marker word is “Yes” since it’s short using a short marker has helped me too. Hope that made sense if not feel free to reply and I’ll try to explain better🫶🏾

Why left and not right side?

Probably because you should be near the road and they should be near the sidewalk/grass

No idea but I always wondered if it was related to how you always lead a horse on your right side.
