  • Kim Dickens Interview: The Highwaymen and the Deadwood Movie
One of the many films that world premiered at this year’s SXSW was director John Lee Hancock’s The Highwaymen. The film follows the “untold true story” of the former Texas Rangers (played by Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson) who captured and killed the notorious outlaws Bonnie and Clyde. The detectives were notable because they relied on their instincts and old school skills rather than the latest technology employed by the FBI. The film also stars Kim Dickens as Costner’s wife and Kathy Bates as Miriam "Ma" Ferguson, the first female Governor of Texas.
Shortly after seeing the film, I sat down with Kim Dickens for a wide-ranging interview. She talked about being part of HBO’s Treme and how the network let the show run its course even though it didn’t have huge ratings, how The Highwaymen is like an old-school Hollywood movie, what it was like working with Kevin Costner, the experience of shooting in Louisiana, what she took away from working with David Fincher on Gone Girl, and something I cannot wait to see: the Deadwood movie!

I quite like this. A conversation. It shows how much Miss Dickens pays attention to the story behind the story and shares personal experience and behind the scenes feelings too.

Kim is right in my opinion, the movie, although giving we fans who watched all three seasons, and were just blessed beyond words 'some form' of closure even if Al's end was for me anyway just not right, and his enormous impact with the great Ian McShane who played him again like slipping on an old pair of slippers, for me I put Deadwood up with Hell on Wheels in terms of richness of script, actors, sets [Canada for HoWs] and also both series were predicated and written in part fact part fiction. Both series also contributed massively to the expansion of America.
The issue of Bullock for example alone could be put into a series, his legacy as a law man, life long friendship with Teddy Rooseveldt. That Al seems to die due to kidney failure for me was wrong, Al lived many years later, killed by someone never found as was his brother who also ran the Gem. And at the end of season three the Doc seemed to be at deaths door, so small things for me as a fanatical watcher of every episode did not feel right.
Hearst also has a story re America's historical past, so just a few examples but some parts of the movie seemed like fillers [Mr Elsworh coming back given she decided to stay in Deadwood at end of season three instead of leaving and sold her claim to Hearst, this for me did not make any sense]. But given Milch so tragically has Alzheimers onset it would be hard to see this being done by him and given his gift for prose, Shakesperian like, am not sure if another writer could pull any future spin off justice. Time will tell. As all know money and how a movie/series rates are the determining factors, but with streaming who's to say Netflix, Hulu or others could not do it?
