Just got this off the Lowes' delivery truck.. i was not aware of the Free wheel engage, and was looking at why I could not get this machine into drive.. THANK YOU. I just bought my first riding lawn mower (a Husqvarna that looks just like this one) and was too afraid to start using it. After watching your video, I gathered the courage to give it a go and I'm just in from mowing what took me about six to eight hours with my little electric mower. Bouncing joyously along on the riding mower, it all took about two hours and I even gathered the nerve, if not skill, to slowly edge along the fencing and borders. So, seriously, thank you - and if you aren't a full-time teacher...you should be! Great, thorough, calming video!!!

Dennis, I too just purchased a new YTH24v48 with the grass catcher attachment two weeks ago. I found this video to be very helpful now that I have mown my lawn twice without purging the tranny. In our 32 years of marriage this is the first new rider we have purchased. I have been thoroughly pleased. Mowed he front and back yard and dumped the clippings in 45 minutes. I will second Mary’s assertion that you must be a teacher/trainer in your day job. All questions were anticipated and addressed completely. I have touched the subscribe icon. In looking over the videos on this channel there is quite a diverse subject matter. Looking forward to poking through them to see what else I can learn. Blessings.
Dennis, what a great video, very informative. If I may, I would like to add a comment about maintaining your mowers engine. Always remember that oil expands when it gets warm. So that means the oil level shall be just a little lower when the engine and oil is cold and that also means the engine oil level shall be a little higher due to expansion after warming up and running the engine for 20 min. or more. So remember that fact when you check your engine oil. You should check the level cold and then again after cutting your lawn. Then check the engine oil when it's warm and you will see that the level is higher. I think its better to add oil to a warmed up engine because you can see the height of the oil at the operating temperature and that will help you not to overfill the oil. Keep an eye on the oil level during the first month or use and of operation or until you are satisfied that you understand the relationship oil has with heat and the oil level with your machine. Once you know what you are doing you will be able to maintain the oil level between the lines.
Dennis a great vid. I am a small engine tech that works on husq. eqmt. Two things to add 1 engine oil drains are ALWAYS loose, and I recommend to replace with 1/4 in. pipe with a cap as the plastic part of the drain WILL eventually fail. 2 DONT purge with the free wheel engaged, There is a small pin in the hydro unit that separates the drive motor and could catch and/or score the plate as it spins freely. All 10 should be checked by whom ever sets it up but these are also basic maint. things owners should do but mostly dont. Not trying to be a troll just want to give info. to someone who might care. Another great video as you always do Dennis. Thanks. ~~~ On the DECK ADJUSTMENT you forgot to mention the *FRONT to REAR DECK ADJUSTMENT*. ~ The FRONT of the deck should be adjusted 1/8" to 1/2" LOWER than the REAR of the deck according to the manual. I adjust mine to 1/4" lower in the front. - --> Another Tip: I never mow after dark, so one of the first things I did was to disconnect (unplug) the wiring harness to the headlights to prevent any potential drain on the battery. I electrical taped off both ends of the connectors and wire tied them up out of the way of everything. (The wiring only goes to the headlights.)
Yes sir, that's a great point Jim! That front rod will raise the front edge of the deck when tightened and lower it when loosened. I definitely should have mentioned that. Maybe I'll do a separate short video only covering adjusting the deck. I do the same as you....set the front edge to 1/4" lower than the rear...seems to give the best cut. Thanks again!
Great advice on new mower procedures.. Generally mowers are shipped to retail outlets and requires the retailer to partially assemble and or install some components to make it ready to run....I know this because I used to set these up for retail sales.. Some things might be overlooked between the manufacturer and retail outlet. Do not assume all systems are go until you check them.. Before I found this video, I checked everything and more because, well, I'm a Coffey lol! Great video cousin lol!!
Yes! I love this....I have a husqvarna yth18542 and am rebuilding the deck....but having a problem with placement if the torsion spring.. .not the one one the idler arm...but the one on the spindle brake....
Thanks for watching, Sarah! I think you are talking about the one on the right spindle...the spring goes from the spindle brake lever, back to the rear hanger on the deck (where the lift arm attaches). I hope that helps!

Your welcome...my seat keeps sliding all over when I'm sitting on it...do u know what the problem is cause I'm a fat person and I don't like it sliding up on me lol squeezes the life out of me lol
It sounds like the catch may not be working. I'd try sliding the seat into the desired position while standing behind the mower, not sitting in the seat. Then see if you can make the seat move with your hands. If you can, the seat catch is not locking into place.
Good job on the video. Got a YTH46 being delivered on Monday. Not my first riding mower, but my first brand shiney new one. Knew about some of the points mentioned, but not all. Never even heard about the hydrostatic purge. Thumbs up.
Got mine last summer never heard of that purge too. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience! Mine’s doing a weird song when unleashing the break looks like something loose or I don’t know. Can it be that the purge is needed?
Thanks for watching, David! Yes sir..you are correct. Thanks for mentioning it because I don't think I covered that adjustment in the video and I should have. It's good to have the front of the deck just a touch lower than the rear.....I usually keep mine between 1/4" and 1/2" lower ion front.
In the owner's manual for the Husqvarna TS242XD it has a very specific warning. CAUTION: Never engage or disengage freewheel control while engine is running. The warning is printed on page 12, right over the instructions on how to purge your transmission. Your purging instructions are correct with the exception that the engine should be stopped when moving the freewheel lever. I haven't seen every manual, but they use Tuff Torq transaxles so I would guess the procedure would be the same.
Yes sir, you are correct! I made a mistake when engaging the freewheel control with the engine running and made note of that in the video description. I believe you are correct also in that this applies to all tractors with the Tuff Torq transmission. 1:39 Confirming #2, CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE. Mine came new with 20-25 psi per tire. As stated, the tire sidewalls do reflect: front, 14 PSI and rear, 10 psi. Manual states, "The tires on your tractor were overinflated at the factory for shipping purposes. Correct tire pressure is important for best cutting performance. • Reduce tire pressure to PSI shown on tires."
I appreciate your videos regarding this tractor. They have been most helpful. Regardless, I have to ask about the handle protruding from the right side of the engine cover ... it looks like a machete or some other type of implement. I'm just curious ...
Thanks for watching, Paul! I appreciate your support. You guessed it! I keep a machete stowed there for quick limb-trimming etc. It will slide right inside the hood and the end fits in a pocket that exists between the hood-side and the headlight assembly.
I have a YTH18542 mower which is supposed to arrive this week. I have been reading the manual, but I am not so sure as to my understanding of setting the mowing cut level with the stick control. I am scheduled to have my front lawn ripped out and a sod lain in the near future. They recommend mowing it at a height of 3", but I am not sure I understand what the numbers actually represent as to cut height. Does the 3 represent 3" or what, as some folk say they cut much higher and I sure don't want to ruin the new lawn by cutting it incorrectly on those settings. I plan to use this video as a guide from day one of receiving my mower. Thanks for any advice on this. Maybe I am just skipping/overlooking something or not reading correctly from the manual, but trying to find out about this mower and all the variances as I can. Thanks for watching, James! The numbers on the deck height setting do not seem to correspond to the cut height. The scale on mine is 1 to 6. About the highest you can get one of these to cut your grass is 3.5 to 4" So....I'd level the deck, take a few passes at the max deck height and see what you have. Then adjust your deck setting from there. With a centipede lawn, I usually but mine on 4 or 5.
Dennis, Have used your great videos a lot. Have the same Husq YTH like your model. Rear wheels locked up after I made a quick stop & set parking. Any suggestions on what should look into?
Thanks for watching! The first thing I'd check is the drive belt. Sounds like it might have slipped the pulley and wedged under it. If not, see if you can move the wheels with the freewheel rod pulled out and the parking brake released. If you can, but it won't move when the forward or reverse pedals are depressed, you may have a transaxle problem.

What can be done to get the most power out of that 22 hp Briggs ? Looking to make the same tractor as yours into a realistic backhoe set up. No hydraulic all linear actuator and welding . All electrical will be run to there own battery
Hey Mike, thanks for watching. There are several things you can do to get more power out of a small engine....some more expensive than others. You can adjust the carb, gut the muffler, adjust or remove the governor. All pretty easy to do and will gain 2-4 hp usually. Possibly re-jet the carb, that would pick up significant gains, especially with the right replacement plugs. Then you could get into serious mods, polish the head ports, rebuild with racing parts (check out Carrier Performance and similar companies for racing parts). Sounds like a cool setup you are planning.....keep us posted. You should consider videoing the process and posting the vids. I'd sure watch it!

Thanks Robert! If the transmission is not purged, typically it will 'slip' on occasion. Also, not purging will leave air in the transmission, which ultimately could damage it as there will be voids in the hydraulic oil coverage of internal parts.
I purchased a Husqvarna lawn tractor two years ago. I hate that I cannot raise the deck higher. At the highest setting, it is still too low to mow anything but flat ground. It is useless at my cabin. I can raise the deck on my 18 year-old Poulan Pro high enough to clear six inch roots and clear rocks at my cabin. I have had to replace the battery twice, the gas tank twice, the fuel filter and gas line once , one of the front tires, and of course several blades due to hitting rocks. I paid $2000 for the Poulan Pro back in 2001, and $1700 for the 24 HP Husqvarna two years ago. The Poulan has a 20 HP V-tech engine that always starts right up. I have to crank on the 24 HP V-tech engine in the Husqvarna several times to get it to start the first time, if the mower sets up any time at all. I do like the foot speed controls on the Husqvarna better than the hand speed control on the Poulan. Your videos are quite helpful for maintaining the Husqvarna tractors. The one on modifying the plastic covers over the spindles was helpful in being able to clean the debris out. For now, I'm using the Husqvarna at my home in the city and the Poulan at our cabin. I hope I can keep both mowers going several more years.
Thanks for watching, Jack! I don't know of a way to raise the max deck height. You can gain a little extra height by tightening the deck support bar on the front of the deck. I agree, it seems like they should have allowed for a greater range in deck height adjustment.
Thanks for the great video. I recently purchased a YTH22V46 Husqvarna with a Briggs & Stratton 22 hp INTEK engine. I now have 9 hours on the tractor. My problem is that the first start of the day takes about five cranking actions. The first crank is with the speed lever in the choke position. The next four cranks I alternate between choke and no choke. I do not crank for more than five seconds at a time and wait a bit for the next cranking. On about the fifth or sixth crank the engine starts. It runs perfectly. If I stop the engine then restart it later on in the day it starts right away. But leave it overnight and the starting becomes a problem. The gas is fresh but has the gasachol additive. Any suggestions to rectify this problem?
Thank you very much for watching, John. Mine will do this too.....I've found a couple of things. If I fully choke the throttle and crank the engine for just a couple of seconds, it will usually fire right up. If it does not, or I crank it longer than that.....I just leave it on full choke and crank it till it starts....that usually takes it turning over 10-12 times. All that said, it shouldn't hurt a thing and seems to be 'normal' for these Briggs engines....they're just a little cold natured. My motorcycle is the same.....takes several turns of the engine each morning to crank, after that it fires right up on the first turn.
@@dwcoffey Thanks for the quick response. It is good to know that there is nothing wrong with the engine - just normally hard to start. But you would think that Briggs & Stratton would have caught that during the design stage and done something about it. It is a reputable company and has been in business forever. But, the tractor/mower runs great so I shouldn't complain about a little hard starting. Thanks again Dennis.
John Kerr ...HELLO....I've been watching your video's for the Husqvarna which I will be purchasing next March, great info. I might have a solution to your hard starts...Presently, I have an older Craftsman lawn tractor with an 18hp Briggs that I purchased "used" and have had it 7 yrs. From the very beginning, I noticed it had problems with hard starts with repeated cranking. Remember, these are simple carbs reminiscent of the old Rodchester carbs in older cars equipped with hand chokes. You had to pull the choke to aid starting, mowers are the same. You can crank and crank until it starts but...as I crank my mower at full choke, I open the choke ever so slightly, allowing some air into the carb and it fires right up, every time. Even in winter. When it fires, I open the choke a little more and let it start to warm then, I open it up to run. I let the engine warm up for a minute or so before I put in gear to move.
I had that issue. I installed a new fuel pump. Apparently I added too much motor oil and it caused too much pressure that destroyed the diaphragm in the pump
My battery cables were not fully tightened on the posts on delivery, so yep, these points are worth checking. Also, reminder if buying new... CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE as Dennis warned. Mine came new with 20-25 psi per tire. The tire side panels reflect: front, 14 PSI and rear, 10 psi. Manual states, "The tires on your tractor were overinflated at the factory for shipping purposes. An FYI: Make sure you get the Husqvarna Front Detacher. 100% better than a rear mount detacher. This detacher is sick and great! I bought mine from Lowe's. You can leave the mounting frame on your tractor and take the detacher off. 46" you will need to add the extra mounting frame, because the tractor frame doesn't have the front mounting holes (unsure about 42", because I own the 46"). m.lowes.com/pd/Husqvarna-40-in-Dethatcher/999930870
Dennis Coffey Trust me my friend it is great and a million times worth the money. The hardest part with putting it together and putting it on my tractor, was putting on the part with front mounting holes on the frame. Becareful there is an electric wire on the left hand side of the tractor (as you are looking at the front of the tractor.). I have the bagger for my 46", detach and pickup at the same time! It is tuff/hard trying to turn left or right when the detacher is lowered. I pick it up and then turn.
Your video is very helpful! I have a question, and am hoping you can help me out? My husband and I just purchased the same model 22hp 42in deck and we have a fairly steep hill in our back yard, the tractor seems to drive very slow uphill and the tires are slipping. I was wondering if this might just be an issue with the tires slipping or maybe it is just not good for uphill? I am not sure.
Hi Brenda, thanks so much for watching! I have not had any trouble with mine not pulling a hill. It has plenty of power to climb, but the tires do slip, especially if wet, and that causes some problems. I have filled my rear tires with antifreeze for extra weight and that helps a lot.
Hi Dennis, I have a carburetor issue on my Husqvarna 48" tractor we were mowing in a very dusty area ,dust got around the air cleaner into the carb.it will only start by using a quick shot of starter fluid, runs fine after that. Plugs were new only 4 hr seemed very dark so I cleaned them, no change.do you have a video on removing said carb and cleaning ?.......Thanks for your previous help✌🏻️
I don't Alan, I'm sorry. You could try running a can of Seafoam through it...that stuff works wonders. If not, sounds like the carb may need to come off and you may need to clean the jets.

Thanks for watching, Andreon! I'm not sure I fully understand your question. On my mower, once I start the engine and it is running, if I turn the key one click counter-clockwise, I can have the blades engaged while going in reverse. Please let me know if that doesn't help.
@@dwcoffey yessir thank you for the quick response. I think its called the pto reverse switch. If i try to have blades engaged while going in reverse my engine will cut off unless I continously hold my key further clockwise.
I see. Yea, that's different than mine and I'm not familiar with how yours is set up. I'm sorry. Once I set my key switch to the proper setting, I can go forward or reverse and keep the blades engaged, no problem.
I have been watching all your videos on these rider. Doing my home work/ research we are looking at buying one from Lowes. 42"or46" deck. Not sure yet. So far all I have heard is how good they are. Only problem is our back yard has a 30 to 40 somewhere around that degree slope runs the width of the back yard. Right now we have someone cutting it because of my health 1.5yrs ago had cancer but so far it is gone. And he use a zero turn mower and it does fine on the slope mowing width wise on the slope . Do you think these rider can handle it too? Sincerely Roger H.
Hey Roger, thanks for watching! Congratulations on winning the cancer battle so far! That is great news. No sir, I would not want to cut across a 30 degree slope with this tractor. A zero turn has a much wider wheel-base, so would be a lot more stable. I have slope that is about 30 degrees in my backyard. I can cut up and down the slope with no problem. To cut across the slope, I have to hang about half my butt off the seat on the high side...I'm 6ft 215lbs.
I saw the video where you show how to level the mower deck,but, I have not seen how to raise the deck though. I want to cut my grass 3" to 4" tall so I can help the grass crowd out the weeds. My cut seems to be about 2 1/2" now at the highest adjuster lever setting. I've never adjusted that front single rod since I bought my machine. My question is, once the deck has been leveled, is the next step to adjust that single hanger rod in the far front middle of the deck? It uses that half moon steel swivel part and I see about 3" of threads after that swivel part that sits in the socket and it has a double nut system to lock the nut. I'm pretty sure it is a deck height adjuster, but I thought I better ask first. IS this rod the adjuster rod for raising the deck. Wish you would do a video on this as it's a very important feature. Thanks.
That's been the single most common complaint I've seen about this mower. the deck height is really too low and hard to adjust to the height most people want it. But....you are correct....the only way to get more height out of the deck is to take that front hanger rod, put it into the hole furthest back on the bracket it will fit into, then tighten it as far as possible. that will raise the front as high as possible without modification. Then level the back and cut on a higher setting. Thanks again for watching!
Very helpful thanks..I never knew about tranmission purge before..but is it normal for the front of the deck to be substantially lower than the rear?..I just acquired a 2654 that is like that..
Thanks for watching! Yes, most all of the mowers I've dealt with will recommend/require the front of the deck to be 1/4" to 1/2" lower than the rear. any more than that tends to give a bad cut, especially on lower settings.
I have a YTA18542. When trying to purge the transmission, it’s seems this model doesn’t allow the freewheel to stay engaged once the brake is pushed in. Any other ideas to fix a sticking forward/reverse and debris has already been cleaned out?

Thanks for watching, Rick! Yes, I do. Most small engines are designed to run at best efficiency at full throttle, so unless I need to slow the blade speed down for a particular reason, I run at full throttle.
My brand new Husqvarna 54 inch tractor won’t start. It has only 13 hours on it. You just hear a click when you turn the key. Have you encountered this? Looking for a solution. Thanks!
Dennis Coffey turns out it’s something in the seat safety kill switch. I guess I could disable it entirely but I wouldn’t trust my 16 year old on the tractor without it.
Interesting, I'm surprised you'd get a click at all with a bad safety kill switch. I agree, I would not want my child on the mower with that disabled. I have not tried to replace one, hopefully you do not have to replace the entire seat to fix it.
Mine doesn't have zerk fittings on the front wheels(under the rubber covers), but there are holes there like they could accommodate zerks if I had them. You think I could add them if I got some from an auto parts store? Model: YTA 18542. Also, apparently the spindles are non-lubable too, wonder if there's a way to add zerks to those as well? I haven't investigated enough to see if there are holes like the wheels I mentioned above. Thanks for the video.
Hi Alan, thanks for watching. I'd try to clean out the holes on the wheel hubs and see if they are threaded....thye should be. If so, you can definitely add zerk fittings and grease them. If not, you can take the wheels off the spindles and grease them manually (see my other video for removing the wheels: ruclips.net/video/clgeR9Pvex4/видео.html ). Same for the spindles.....there should be holes for the zerks and they should be threaded.

Yes, you are right, they come in different sizes. The most common thread size is 1/4-28 tapered thread...this would normally go into a 1/4-28 straight thread hole....kind of like tapered pipe fittings.
@@dwcoffey Thanks again Dennis. After further investigation(this mower is new to me) I found zerks on the inside of the front wheels, so now I just need to deal with is the spindles.
You know, I've seen that before. Somebody doesn't look for the zerks before they mount the tires and put them on the wrong side out. Those tires are non-directional, so if you ever take them off, you can just turn them around and get the grease fittings on the outside. Nice job on the Video and thank you for adding the links to the different manuals. We have a Husquana YTH24K48, The deck /height adjustment level will not go any lower then the 2.5 setting. How can we fix this issue? It went in for a repair and when we got it back it was like this. Service said they did not adjust the deck cutting.
Hi Sue, thank you for watching. It might be tough for me to diagnose that problem without seeing the tractor, but lets give it a try! What did the service folks repair? Is the deck only going to 2.5 because it is on the ground at that setting, or is it still off the ground and something else is preventing the adjustment from going further?
My mower deck has 6 height adjustments but will not go any lower than the #4 setting. Been that way since new and I bought it new 12 years ago. Recently put taller tires on front and rear and helped this issue somewhat. Plus help keep me from getting my 54” deck from hanging up on uneven places. Also put aggressive tread tires on the rear to help increase traction
It went in for repair due to the engine running hot. The service repair ticket also states that they cleaned the under side of the deck where there was grass buildup. The deck is still off the ground. The service tech states that when you raise the deck to the highest slot the deck is at the maximum height and can't be raised any more without causing damage to the mower.
Thanks for watching. There is an adjustable brake...the cable and brake adjustment is on the right side of the transaxle. There is a brake operating arm, a spring, an adjusting nut, a jam nut, and then the cable. Here's the procedure: TO ADJUST BRAKE Depress clutch/brake pedal all the way down and engage parking brake. • Measure distance between brake operating arm and the jam nut on brake rod. • If distance is other than 1-9/16", loosen jam nut and turn adjusting nut until distance becomes 1-9/16". Retighten jam nut against adjusting nut. IF you have to adjust that measurement to much less than 1-1/2", you may need new brake pads.

Mine is pouring fuel out at the bottom of the air filter so it got dark so I can't see where it is coming from but has been in storage for 2 years but I mowed the front yard 2acers and took lunch came out and it starts pouring fuel
Hey Alan, yes....go to www.husqvarna.com/us/support/manuals-downloads/ , type in your model number (ie YTH24V48), click on Operator's Manual and download the appropriate one for your tractor. If yours is the YTH24V48, there's a maintenance chart on page 14. Hey Alan, One of the nice things about that hydrostatic tranny....no maintenance! :) The only thing you have to do to it is make sure the cooling fins on top stay fairly free of debris. Yes, the front end suspension is normally very loose feeling when jacked up, probably even more so once it's been greased. It's like that because there are no springs or dampeners like a car. Mainly just be certain that you have the correct replacement before installing it.....most places won't take returns on electrical parts. Also, be certain to disconnect the battery first. The steps I would take: Disconnect the battery. Remove the wire(s) from one terminal of the original solenoid, move them to the same terminal on the replacement.....do that until all the wires are moved and secured. Remove the original solenoid. Attach the replacement solenoid. Reconnect the battery. Try it. :) (You may have to decide when it is best to remove the original and attach the replacement based on accessibility to the mounting screws/bolts.) That should do it. Thanks!!

Dennis, I too just purchased a new YTH24v48 with the grass catcher attachment two weeks ago. I found this video to be very helpful now that I have mown my lawn twice without purging the tranny. In our 32 years of marriage this is the first new rider we have purchased. I have been thoroughly pleased. Mowed he front and back yard and dumped the clippings in 45 minutes. I will second Mary’s assertion that you must be a teacher/trainer in your day job. All questions were anticipated and addressed completely. I have touched the subscribe icon. Dennis, what a great video, very informative. If I may, I would like to add a comment about maintaining your mowers engine.
Always remember that oil expands when it gets warm. So that means the oil level shall be just a little lower when the engine and oil is cold and that also means the engine oil level shall be a little higher due to expansion after warming up and running the engine for 20 min. or more.
So remember that fact when you check your engine oil. You should check the level cold and then again after cutting your lawn. Then check the engine oil when it's warm and you will see that the level is higher. I think its better to add oil to a warmed up engine because you can see the height of the oil at the operating temperature and that will help you not to overfill the oil.
Keep an eye on the oil level during the first month or use and of operation or until you are satisfied that you understand the relationship oil has with heat and the oil level with your machine. Once you know what you are doing you will be able to maintain the oil level between the lines.

Dennis a great vid. I am a small engine tech that works on husq. eqmt. Two things to add 1 engine oil drains are ALWAYS loose, and I recommend to replace with 1/4 in. pipe with a cap as the plastic part of the drain WILL eventually fail. 2 DONT purge with the free wheel engaged, There is a small pin in the hydro unit that separates the drive motor and could catch and/or score the plate as it spins freely. All 10 should be checked by whom ever sets it up but these are also basic maint. things owners should do but mostly dont. Not trying to be a troll just want to give info. to someone who might care. Another great video as you always do Dennis. Thanks. ~~~ On the DECK ADJUSTMENT you forgot to mention the *FRONT to REAR DECK ADJUSTMENT*. ~ The FRONT of the deck should be adjusted 1/8" to 1/2" LOWER than the REAR of the deck according to the manual. I adjust mine to 1/4" lower in the front. -
--> Another Tip: I never mow after dark, so one of the first things I did was to disconnect (unplug) the wiring harness to the headlights to prevent any potential drain on the battery. I electrical taped off both ends of the connectors and wire tied them up out of the way of everything. (The wiring only goes to the headlights.)
Yes sir, that's a great point Jim! That front rod will raise the front edge of the deck when tightened and lower it when loosened. I definitely should have mentioned that. Maybe I'll do a separate short video only covering adjusting the deck. I do the same as you....set the front edge to 1/4" lower than the rear...seems to give the best cut. Thanks again!

Generally mowers are shipped to retail outlets and requires the retailer to partially assemble and or install some components to make it ready to run....I know this because I used to set these up for retail sales..
Some things might be overlooked between the manufacturer and retail outlet.
Do not assume all systems are go until you check them..

It sounds like the catch may not be working. I'd try sliding the seat into the desired position while standing behind the mower, not sitting in the seat. Then see if you can make the seat move with your hands. If you can, the seat catch is not locking into place.

There"s a front to rear deck adjustment too. It's in the front. Tighten to raise the front, loosen to lower the front.

In the owner's manual for the Husqvarna TS242XD it has a very specific warning. CAUTION: Never engage or disengage freewheel control while engine is running. The warning is printed on page 12, right over the instructions on how to purge your transmission. Your purging instructions are correct with the exception that the engine should be stopped when moving the freewheel lever. I haven't seen every manual, but they use Tuff Torq transaxles so I would guess the procedure would be the same.
Yes sir, you are correct! I made a mistake when engaging the freewheel control with the engine running and made note of that in the video description. I believe you are correct also in that this applies to all tractors with the Tuff Torq transmission. 1:39 Confirming #2, CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE. Mine came new with 20-25 psi per tire. As stated, the tire sidewalls do reflect: front, 14 PSI and rear, 10 psi.
Manual states, "The tires on your tractor were overinflated at the factory for shipping purposes. Correct tire pressure is important for best cutting performance. • Reduce tire pressure to PSI shown on tires."

I have a YTH18542 mower which is supposed to arrive this week. I have been reading the manual, but I am not so sure as to my understanding of setting the mowing cut level with the stick control. I am scheduled to have my front lawn ripped out and a sod lain in the near future. They recommend mowing it at a height of 3", but I am not sure I understand what the numbers actually represent as to cut height. Does the 3 represent 3" or what, as some folk say they cut much higher and I sure don't want to ruin the new lawn by cutting it incorrectly on those settings. I plan to use this video as a guide from day one of receiving my mower. Thanks for any advice on this. Maybe I am just skipping/overlooking something or not reading correctly from the manual, but trying to find out about this mower and all the variances as I can. Thanks for the great videos you have shared. i appreciate it.
Thanks for watching, James! The numbers on the deck height setting do not seem to correspond to the cut height. The scale on mine is 1 to 6. About the highest you can get one of these to cut your grass is 3.5 to 4" So....I'd level the deck, take a few passes at the max deck height and see what you have. Then adjust your deck setting from there. With a centipede lawn, I usually but mine on 4 or 5.

Thanks for watching! The first thing I'd check is the drive belt. Sounds like it might have slipped the pulley and wedged under it. If not, see if you can move the wheels with the freewheel rod pulled out and the parking brake released. If you can, but it won't move when the forward or reverse pedals are depressed, you may have a transaxle problem.

What can be done to get the most power out of that 22 hp Briggs ? Looking to make the same tractor as yours into a realistic backhoe set up. No hydraulic all linear actuator and welding . All electrical will be run to there own battery
Hey Mike, thanks for watching. There are several things you can do to get more power out of a small engine....some more expensive than others. You can adjust the carb, gut the muffler, adjust or remove the governor. All pretty easy to do and will gain 2-4 hp usually. Possibly re-jet the carb, that would pick up significant gains, especially with the right replacement plugs. Then you could get into serious mods, polish the head ports, rebuild with racing parts (check out Carrier Performance and similar companies for racing parts). Sounds like a cool setup you are planning.....keep us posted. You should consider videoing the process and posting the vids. I'd sure watch it!

Thanks Robert! If the transmission is not purged, typically it will 'slip' on occasion. Also, not purging will leave air in the transmission, which ultimately could damage it as there will be voids in the hydraulic oil coverage of internal parts.
I purchased a Husqvarna lawn tractor two years ago. I hate that I cannot raise the deck higher. At the highest setting, it is still too low to mow anything but flat ground. It is useless at my cabin.
I can raise the deck on my 18 year-old Poulan Pro high enough to clear six inch roots and clear rocks at my cabin. I have had to replace the battery twice, the gas tank twice, the fuel filter and gas line once , one of the front tires, and of course several blades due to hitting rocks.
I paid $2000 for the Poulan Pro back in 2001, and $1700 for the 24 HP Husqvarna two years ago. The Poulan has a 20 HP V-tech engine that always starts right up. I have to crank on the 24 HP V-tech engine in the Husqvarna several times to get it to start the first time, if the mower sets up any time at all.
I do like the foot speed controls on the Husqvarna better than the hand speed control on the Poulan.
Your videos are quite helpful for maintaining the Husqvarna tractors. The one on modifying the plastic covers over the spindles was helpful in being able to clean the debris out. For now, I'm using the Husqvarna at my home in the city and the Poulan at our cabin. I hope I can keep both mowers going several more years.

My problem is that the first start of the day takes about five cranking actions. The first crank is with the speed lever in the choke position. The next four cranks I alternate between choke and no choke. I do not crank for more than five seconds at a time and wait a bit for the next cranking. On about the fifth or sixth crank the engine starts. It runs perfectly. If I stop the engine then restart it later on in the day it starts right away. But leave it overnight and the starting becomes a problem. The gas is fresh but has the gasachol additive. Any suggestions to rectify this problem?
Thank you very much for watching, John. Mine will do this too.....I've found a couple of things. If I fully choke the throttle and crank the engine for just a couple of seconds, it will usually fire right up. If it does not, or I crank it longer than that.....I just leave it on full choke and crank it till it starts....that usually takes it turning over 10-12 times.
All that said, it shouldn't hurt a thing and seems to be 'normal' for these Briggs engines....they're just a little cold natured. My motorcycle is the same.....takes several turns of the engine each morning to crank, after that it fires right up on the first turn.
@@dwcoffey Thanks for the quick response. It is good to know that there is nothing wrong with the engine - just normally hard to start. But you would think that Briggs & Stratton would have caught that during the design stage and done something about it. It is a reputable company and has been in business forever. But, the tractor/mower runs great so I shouldn't complain about a little hard starting. Thanks again Dennis.
John Kerr ...HELLO....I've been watching your video's for the Husqvarna which I will be purchasing next March, great info. I might have a solution to your hard starts...Presently, I have an older Craftsman lawn tractor with an 18hp Briggs that I purchased "used" and have had it 7 yrs. From the very beginning, I noticed it had problems with hard starts with repeated cranking. Remember, these are simple carbs reminiscent of the old Rodchester carbs in older cars equipped with hand chokes. You had to pull the choke to aid starting, mowers are the same. You can crank and crank until it starts but...as I crank my mower at full choke, I open the choke ever so slightly, allowing some air into the carb and it fires right up, every time. Even in winter. When it fires, I open the choke a little more and let it start to warm then, I open it up to run. I let the engine warm up for a minute or so before I put in gear to move.
I had that issue. I installed a new fuel pump. Apparently I added too much motor oil and it caused too much pressure that destroyed the diaphragm in the pump
My battery cables were not fully tightened on the posts on delivery, so yep, these points are worth checking.
Also, reminder if buying new... CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE as Dennis warned. Mine came new with 20-25 psi per tire. The tire side panels reflect: front, 14 PSI and rear, 10 psi. Manual states, "The tires on your tractor were overinflated at the factory for shipping purposes. Correct tire pressure is important for best cutting performance. • Reduce tire pressure to PSI shown on tires."

An FYI: Make sure you get the Husqvarna Front Detacher. 100% better than a rear mount detacher. This detacher is sick and great! I bought mine from Lowe's. You can leave the mounting frame on your tractor and take the detacher off. 46" you will need to add the extra mounting frame, because the tractor frame doesn't have the front mounting holes (unsure about 42", because I own the 46").

Dennis Coffey Trust me my friend it is great and a million times worth the money. The hardest part with putting it together and putting it on my tractor, was putting on the part with front mounting holes on the frame. Becareful there is an electric wire on the left hand side of the tractor (as you are looking at the front of the tractor.). I have the bagger for my 46", detach and pickup at the same time! It is tuff/hard trying to turn left or right when the detacher is lowered. I pick it up and then turn.
Your video is very helpful! I have a question, and am hoping you can help me out? My husband and I just purchased the same model 22hp 42in deck and we have a fairly steep hill in our back yard, the tractor seems to drive very slow uphill and the tires are slipping. I was wondering if this might just be an issue with the tires slipping or maybe it is just not good for uphill? I am not sure.
Hi Brenda, thanks so much for watching! I have not had any trouble with mine not pulling a hill. It has plenty of power to climb, but the tires do slip, especially if wet, and that causes some problems. I have filled my rear tires with antifreeze for extra weight and that helps a lot.
Hi Dennis, I have a carburetor issue on my Husqvarna 48" tractor we were mowing in a very dusty area ,dust got around the air cleaner into the carb.it will only start by using a quick shot of starter fluid, runs fine after that. Plugs were new only 4 hr seemed very dark so I cleaned them, no change.do you have a video on removing said carb and cleaning ?.......Thanks for your previous help✌🏻️
I don't Alan, I'm sorry. You could try running a can of Seafoam through it...that stuff works wonders. If not, sounds like the carb may need to come off and you may need to clean the jets.
Any way to check the oil in the transmission/rearend. I have heard it is wise to change the oil to a better oil than what was put in at the factory(?)

Thanks for watching, Andreon! I'm not sure I fully understand your question. On my mower, once I start the engine and it is running, if I turn the key one click counter-clockwise, I can have the blades engaged while going in reverse. Please let me know if that doesn't help.
@@dwcoffey yessir thank you for the quick response. I think its called the pto reverse switch. If i try to have blades engaged while going in reverse my engine will cut off unless I continously hold my key further clockwise.
I see. Yea, that's different than mine and I'm not familiar with how yours is set up. I'm sorry. Once I set my key switch to the proper setting, I can go forward or reverse and keep the blades engaged, no problem.

I have been watching all your videos on these rider. Doing my home work/ research we are looking at buying one from Lowes. 42"or46" deck. Not sure yet. So far all I have heard is how good they are. Only problem is our back yard has a 30 to 40 somewhere around that degree slope runs the width of the back yard. Right now we have someone cutting it because of my health 1.5yrs ago had cancer but so far it is gone. And he use a zero turn mower and it does fine on the slope mowing width wise on the slope . Hey Roger, thanks for watching! Congratulations on winning the cancer battle so far! That is great news. No sir, I would not want to cut across a 30 degree slope with this tractor. A zero turn has a much wider wheel-base, so would be a lot more stable. I have slope that is about 30 degrees in my backyard. I can cut up and down the slope with no problem. To cut across the slope, I have to hang about half my butt off the seat on the high side...I'm 6ft 215lbs.

I saw the video where you show how to level the mower deck,but, I have not seen how to raise the deck though. I want to cut my grass 3" to 4" tall so I can help the grass crowd out the weeds. My cut seems to be about 2 1/2" now at the highest adjuster lever setting. I've never adjusted that front single rod since I bought my machine. My question is, once the deck has been leveled, is the next step to adjust that single hanger rod in the far front middle of the deck? It uses that half moon steel swivel part and I see about 3" of threads after that swivel part that sits in the socket and it has a double nut system to lock the nut. I'm pretty sure it is a deck height adjuster, but I thought I better ask first. IS this rod the adjuster rod for raising the deck. Wish you would do a video on this as it's a very important feature. Thanks.
That's been the single most common complaint I've seen about this mower. the deck height is really too low and hard to adjust to the height most people want it. But....you are correct....the only way to get more height out of the deck is to take that front hanger rod, put it into the hole furthest back on the bracket it will fit into, then tighten it as far as possible. that will raise the front as high as possible without modification. Then level the back and cut on a higher setting. Thanks again for watching!

Thanks for watching! Yes, most all of the mowers I've dealt with will recommend/require the front of the deck to be 1/4" to 1/2" lower than the rear. any more than that tends to give a bad cut, especially on lower settings.

I have a YTA18542. When trying to purge the transmission, it’s seems this model doesn’t allow the freewheel to stay engaged once the brake is pushed in. Any other ideas to fix a sticking forward/reverse and debris has already been cleaned out?

Dennis Coffey turns out it’s something in the seat safety kill switch. I guess I could disable it entirely but I wouldn’t trust my 16 year old on the tractor without it.
Interesting, I'm surprised you'd get a click at all with a bad safety kill switch. I agree, I would not want my child on the mower with that disabled. I have not tried to replace one, hopefully you do not have to replace the entire seat to fix it.
Mine doesn't have zerk fittings on the front wheels(under the rubber covers), but there are holes there like they could accommodate zerks if I had them. You think I could add them if I got some from an auto parts store? Model: YTA 18542. Also, apparently the spindles are non-lubable too, wonder if there's a way to add zerks to those as well? I haven't investigated enough to see if there are holes like the wheels I mentioned above. Thanks for the video.
Hi Alan, thanks for watching. I'd try to clean out the holes on the wheel hubs and see if they are threaded....thye should be. If so, you can definitely add zerk fittings and grease them. If not, you can take the wheels off the spindles and grease them manually (see my other video for removing the wheels: ruclips.net/video/clgeR9Pvex4/видео.html ). Same for the spindles.....there should be holes for the zerks and they should be threaded.

Yes, you are right, they come in different sizes. The most common thread size is 1/4-28 tapered thread...this would normally go into a 1/4-28 straight thread hole....kind of like tapered pipe fittings.
@@dwcoffey Thanks again Dennis. After further investigation(this mower is new to me) I found zerks on the inside of the front wheels, so now I just need to deal with is the spindles.
You know, I've seen that before. Somebody doesn't look for the zerks before they mount the tires and put them on the wrong side out. Those tires are non-directional, so if you ever take them off, you can just turn them around and get the grease fittings on the outside. Nice job on the Video and thank you for adding the links to the different manuals. We have a Husquana YTH24K48, The deck /height adjustment level will not go any lower then the 2.5 setting. How can we fix this issue? It went in for a repair and when we got it back it was like this. Service said they did not adjust the deck cutting.
Hi Sue, thank you for watching. It might be tough for me to diagnose that problem without seeing the tractor, but lets give it a try! What did the service folks repair? Is the deck only going to 2.5 because it is on the ground at that setting, or is it still off the ground and something else is preventing the adjustment from going further?
My mower deck has 6 height adjustments but will not go any lower than the #4 setting. Been that way since new and I bought it new 12 years ago. Recently put taller tires on front and rear and helped this issue somewhat. Plus help keep me from getting my 54” deck from hanging up on uneven places. Also put aggressive tread tires on the rear to help increase traction
It went in for repair due to the engine running hot. The service repair ticket also states that they cleaned the under side of the deck where there was grass buildup. The deck is still off the ground.
The service tech states that when you raise the deck to the highest slot the deck is at the maximum height and can't be raised any more without causing damage to the mower.

Thanks for watching. There is an adjustable brake...the cable and brake adjustment is on the right side of the transaxle. There is a brake operating arm, a spring, an adjusting nut, a jam nut, and then the cable. Here's the procedure:
TO ADJUST BRAKE
Depress clutch/brake pedal all the way down and engage parking brake.
•
Measure distance between brake operating arm and the jam nut on brake rod.
•
If distance is other than 1-9/16", loosen jam nut and turn adjusting nut until distance becomes 1-9/16". Retighten
jam nut against adjusting nut.
IF you have to adjust that measurement to much less than 1-1/2", you may need new brake pads.

Mine is pouring fuel out at the bottom of the air filter so it got dark so I can't see where it is coming from but has been in storage for 2 years but I mowed the front yard 2acers and took lunch came out and it starts pouring fuel

Hey Alan, yes....go to www.husqvarna.com/us/support/manuals-downloads/ , type in your model number (ie YTH24V48), click on Operator's Manual and download the appropriate one for your tractor. If yours is the YTH24V48, there's a maintenance chart on page 14.
At 100 hours, here are the things you should do, some of which I have videos on my channel:

Replace the Spark Plugs (or at least pull them, clean them and re-gap)

I'd also check the blades for wear, be sure the bolts are tight. I'd go around the tractor and just check all the hitch pins, bolts, etc. to be sure all the fasteners are tight. Also probably a good time to check air pressure in the tires.

Hey Alan, One of the nice things about that hydrostatic tranny....no maintenance! :) The only thing you have to do to it is make sure the cooling fins on top stay fairly free of debris. Yes, the front end suspension is normally very loose feeling when jacked up, probably even more so once it's been greased. It's like that because there are no springs or dampeners like a car. Alan Ross Dennis did NOT understand your question. NO there is NO maintainence required on the HST trans !!! It is a sealed unit !!!
Hey Dennis...I need to replace the solenoid on my Husqvarna...any tips and suggestions for this process?
Mainly just be certain that you have the correct replacement before installing it.....most places won't take returns on electrical parts. Also, be certain to disconnect the battery first. The steps I would take: Disconnect the battery. Remove the wire(s) from one terminal of the original solenoid, move them to the same terminal on the replacement.....do that until all the wires are moved and secured. Remove the original solenoid. Attach the replacement solenoid. Reconnect the battery. Try it. :) (You may have to decide when it is best to remove the original and attach the replacement based on accessibility to the mounting screws/bolts.)
