    I gotta say, I like how much low end spank this thing has! That sounds killer, I bet it would djent well. Love the aesthetic too, which is really unusual for me considering it is an SG. I usually despise the look of SGs, I think the devil horns on the top are a bit much.
    For anyone who was curious like I was, Richlite is basically micarta made from recycled paper. It is basically recycled paper stacked up and pressed with phenolic resin.

    Thank you Mr. Trogley. Your playing has really improved and the sound quality was great! I know this SG fairly well but I never noticed the font of the truss-rod cover was so KISSish. To me, the only place they should have changed anything on this guitar besides the switch tip, it the font color on the FRX. It should have been red like nearly everything else.

    I normally hate SGs but I love pretty much everything about that one. The typical SG neck dive defiles what would otherwise be my complete affection for it.

    • @nilswegner2881
      @nilswegner2881 4 года назад +5

      The neck dive and the output jack on the front that is. The SG shape is still ugly in my opinion but some of the specs like the frx, the pickups and the fact it only has two knobs instead of that 4 knob Nonsens would make this guitar quite useful for me. But not with the output jack on the front like that, my wireless doesn't have an angled jack plug and I know I'd break it as soon as I hit the stage with the guitar. And a diving neck isn't a feature, Gibson, it is a flaw and I still don't quite understand why on earth they still haven't done anything against it

      @@nilswegner2881 I got it last year at $800 in Reverb.com and actually play it with my Bose Katana Wireless system... If you can get one, go for it (I used to hate SG's as well 'cause of those horns, but.. These Guy is in Another League)!! Cheers from Peru!

    • @nilswegner2881
      @nilswegner2881 4 года назад

      @@jorgeloo3131 I'm more into Teles and Superstrats so I don't think I'll add any SG to my collection. A Double Cut LP special maybe because their horns look quite nice but I think the design of an SG is just straight on ugly. I've been using a Thomann t.Bone DS16 wireless system for as long as I play on stages and since it works for me I don't really want to upgrade it. I could of course replace the cable or at least the Jack plug with an angled one, I might even do it for the sake of being eble to sit on the couch with my guitars without bending the cable that much, but what really bothers me about this guitar is that Gibson still haven't fixed the neck dive issue

    Hello there, thank you for the review of the SG CM Black. I've owned mine now for 3years and I absolutely Love it! It has the '59 LP style neck and plays so good! The previous SG I owned was an All American 1998 model that had the typical thin profile SG neck . It played good as well,but the 2016 CM Black has more overall to e due to meatier neck! The Dirty Fingers pick ups are brutal when the volume is on 10! I've discovered however when I go from my 2005 Peavey 5150 II amp to the 1988 Marshall JCM 900 those Dirty Finger pick ups.are so versatile! I can back off the volume knob to 6 or 8 gives you more of the traditional SG tone! So I really Love that aspect of it! It was a limited run so they are definitely hard to find!

      It's always nice to see how opinions vary. I mostly hate SGs, I think they are ugly and because of neck dive unplayable for me. Also having the output Jack on the front like this would never work for me because I don't have an angled jack plug on my wireless. This one SG is still better than the rest of them because it has done away with the 2 pots per pickup Nonsens and only has master tone and volume knobs which is exactly what I need. Also it does not have that tuneomatic bridge crap that most Gibsons have but rather a Floyd rose which makes it actually usable for me (I need a trem on my guitar for what I play and I'm not a fan of bigsby). But then there's that neck dive and output jack on the front that makes this guitar as worthless as any other SG or Gibson really to me.

    I ordered one of these Les Paul-models some years ago, just out of curiosity. The looks are up to one‘s taste, I personally like it very much. The finish is my absolute favorite, because it makes the neck easy to play. The trem is absolutely okay, needs to be set up correctly though. There is a small spring which helps to keep it in tune by slightly locking it in the middle position. That can be set up or even removed, but I found this very helpful to stay in tune. The flat top might help with the FRX, since it could touch a heavily carved top. This guitar is absolutely great. The PUs are okay, but again subject to taste and I‘m just about to make a change there. Has anyone ever seen those Dirty Fingers+ sold seperatley?

    Thank you trogly as always for the great content I really love listening and sometimes I can even see something lol. Severely legal legally blind so that tends to put a damper on view and stuff depending on the lighting. And it's never ever clear but still it's all good! You know I bought I have a 2005 SG special special. I call it a special special because it was a limited run of with the high wine red gloss finish on it. The finish on that guitar is like a piece of glass literally. I love the feel of it. I can even see it shining and some light I can see the grain so it's a win-win for me. It came with the 490 r and 4902 pickups which I happen to really like at first I didn't think I would like them but I really grown accustomed and enjoy these pickups very much. What's really cool about it is it's neck and that's why I'm commenting. Cuz you had mentioned you know you got the old style fat baseball bat ones and then you have the real thin ones that came out in the late 60s I guess so well the '60s. I had a 69 SG cherry red with a Bixby back when I first taught myself to play guitar in the very early 80s bought it used. Had a very very thin neck. But the neck on this special is like in between it's like the perfect balance between the two. Really really enjoy this guitar. And again the finish on it is flawless except for the few things I put into it lol. Even my 2017 firebird 5 or like you had mentioned the fiber tea for traditional to finish on it is also pretty amazing and since it's a vintage burst you can see wood grain in it and the 9 piece neck through body is also pretty easy to see even for me with the right lighting. But it doesn't have that glass finish feel that my SG has. Anyway that's a lot of something about nothing I guess lol. Thanks again as always always looking forward to your newest video and I really missed any since I found your channel a while back. Keep them coming! Sincerely us, Bob the blind bedroom guitarist

    You get more upward motion once you actually set it up for floating. Turning the thumbscrew only unblocks the bridge, you have to adjust the tension rod in the back to balance the tension between the strings/back spring. Once that's balanced you'll have a MUCH wider range of motion, similar to an OG floyd

    i just noticed how the word "black" in the trussrod cover resembles the black sabbath logo. Well, when you stick a tremolo system on a metal sg, that's gotta be a nod to tony iommi. nice one

    Thanks for go'n through the CM model. I recall be'n really interested in these, come'n across them on their web site then. I didn't get a chance to check one out unfortunately.. At the time I had a Gibson LP & SG, so I thought why not buy a Floyd top-loader trem and a set of dirty fingers and take my pick of which one I'm gonna put them in n' on. I never did though cause I came across a local cat who was make'n guitars that I like'd way more than the corporate stuff. I sold my Gibson's to buy another one of his. No regrets!

    Hi Trog, been enjoying the in depth "nerd-fest" reviews ( compliment ). You quickly flashed a LP with the P90s pups and I thought I'd give it a go to maybe ask for some review / detail / history of the P90"slugs". They dont seem to be popular, but I would love to know more about it. Even in the midst of loads of reviews of Specials with them, very little mention is made of the pups themselves. Keep it going, and keep well.

      Hmmm..l have a 18 SG HPll with the strap knob on the back of the horn..factory placed..it still dives like a falcon! I want to like the guitar but the heavy head or light body..l don't know what or why it dives but it's to the point l want to put steel in rear cavity or a weighted strap..but it still sadly looks like BRAND NEW because l don't use it. It is the prettiest and one on the best sounding guitars l own but it's annoying to say the very least to play because of the extreme neck dive.

      I put some lumps of lead in the controls cavity - works. Lead is easy to cut to shape or melt and cast in plaster. Just wear gloves and no kids around. Great guitar and still not heavy, just balances.

    • @jameshill2015
      @jameshill2015 4 года назад

      @@bradlivey7867 l would only want enough weight to balance the thing..it's not a heavy guitar as far as my stable goes. The further l could put the weight to the bottom button the less extra weight l would need. I am leaning towards a leather sleeve around bottom of strap with a pocket for lead shot to adjust it to perfection without modding guitar. The top strap button as l said is already in the back of top horn...from factory Gibson.

    The FRX is designed to be a drill-less mod on a typical USA Gibson (outside of the optional locking nut). I'm a Floyd player, and the FRX is kinda like a happy medium between a modern Strat trem and a standard Floyd (it's almost like a typical Kahler). I'm not And yeah, the inserts for Nashville bridge are intended to be pressed into the body...so yeah, you could easily convert that into a standard Tuneomatic/Stop Tailpiece configuration.
    The Dean Zelinsky Z Glide neck is a laser-engraved pattern designed to minimize the effective surface area of the neck for faster playing. It's a VERY different feel from a standard satin or oiled maple neck (I've played a Z Glide and it's really nice...but I prefer the unfinished, tung oiled maple necks on my Kiesels). I love the Dirty Fingers+...but I'm a hard rock/metal girl :)

  • @GeronimoBiggles
    @GeronimoBiggles 4 года назад

    2016 was the best year for modern Gibsons. The reason you like that satin finish so much is because for 2016 it is an actual Nitrocellulose finish unlike other years where they would use cheaper chemical treatments. The only Les Paul I own is a 2016 studio with the same satin finish :)

    Ok, just a tip for anyone considering putting a Floyd rose FRX on their guitar I would like to give you some tips as someone who put one on their Wylde audio odin grail
    1.) if you don’t use a Gibson the carve of the top does matter and if it’s to carved (like on my odin grail) you’ll need to get it routed out so the compression spring can work
    2.) you can use a D-Tuna on it but you physically won’t be able to pull it back plus you loose some fine Tuning range (I would suggest tuning the low E a bit flatter then you normally would with the other bass strings)
    3.) you can make it EXTREMELY loose to the point where you push it down with a pinky
    4.) PLEASE use normal gauge strings, if you try and use a Hendrix type gauge with it the tuning stability WILL go down the toilet so I would recommend something like a normal set of 10’s or 11’s for normal Gibsons with an FRX
    5.) the locking nut system that comes with the guitar has screws that may be to big so I would suggest going to Home Depot and buying the same size screw just smaller

    Hey, take in mind that Floyd rose can be set up with heavy duty springs (I have Gotoh fr with hd springs) and for start I was sure I will break sth with full dive bombs, but no, everything rock solid. So probably this frx is similar:)

  • @B_Wolfen
    @B_Wolfen 4 года назад

    It seems to me that the Floyd FRX does pretty similar things like the Stetsbar system. Both top mount (Stetsbar is a fully non-invasive mount on a tune-o-matic & stoptail thread config), allow to pitch down and up, and are able to lock. The springs in the Stetsbar do not work against you that much, in the movement is lateral rather than rotating around a knife edge post...one more similarity: They are bith pricey😉.

I'm not entirely sure how, but I saw on Agufish's video (the one before today's upload) that the video had it. Maybe reach out to him and see how to do it?
