Russell Martin was named Swansea City manager in August 2021, and in his first season at the club masterminded the first ever league double in the fierce local rivalry with Cardiff City. In this exclusive Coaches’ Voice Masterclass, Martin delivers an incredible insight into the tactical approach for the second of his team’s victories: a comprehensive 4-0 that silenced a stunned home crowd in April 2022.
In the Masterclass, Martin reflects on the 3-0 home win over Cardiff from earlier in the season, before explaining the changes that had come into play for the reverse fixture. Out of possession, he speaks about the way in which he looked to use deep-lying midfielder Flynn Downes in front of the team’s three centre-backs, and how important it is that his team’s defensive units remain connected from front to back. On the ball, he explains the importance of middle centre-back Kyle Naughton, the role of his attacking wing-backs in tandem with number eights Joël Piroe and Jamie Paterson, and the job Michael Obafemi had in stretching the pitch in behind the Cardiff centre-backs.
It’s a superbly detailed but clear exposition of tactics that work to full effect in a hugely important fixture for both club and coach.

If Russ gets the backing from the owners and gets the players he wants he can make us a very dangerous team, we’ve seen glimpses of what he can do this season and last and I have full confidence in him

Having watched this all the way through and now hearing that he might be Southampton's manager in the Championship, I'm encouraged. Not only do they get a UK manager but someone who speaks really well and obviously has a game plan, which seems to have been lacking from Ruben Selles. Most interesting if true will be so see who he keeps and who he sells and then can he mould the squad to play the way he wants. You can see Walker-Peters / Livramento / Bree and Perraud / Larios as wingbacks ...

I’m from Swansea and I think he’s done a lot of good with a really unbalanced squad with no depth, if he gets to make a good few signings I think he could take you back first time of asking. Obviously have to see what ur squad looks like after the window

7:12 problem with this press is that it leaves a winger completely free on the opposite flank for the switch, leaving our wide wide centre half’s with too much space to defend against the isolated winger. Big fan of Russ but against teams with explosive wide men I’ve seen us get caught out so often because of this.
Edit: 50 goals conceded now this season. Worst in the league along with Wigan. This press simply doesn’t work against most teams in this division as it leaves our wide defenders with too much space to defend against.

I love how he applies specific tactics based on the atmosphere of the game, his whole tactical plan of how to progress the ball is triggered by basically playing a game of chicken with the crowd and the Cardiff front 2. perfect synergy of tactics and vibes; absolutely the opposite of tactics for tactics sake or just blindly sticking to one 'philosophy' whatever the game state. of course you have a general outilne of style and how you want your teams to play but the route to acheiving that has to be game/atmosphere specific.

Excellent insight. I've said it before and I'll say it again; I am now eating my words on their past performances because, at this moment, they have the best form in the Championship. I know it's late and may not get us to play-offs this season but better late than never - and bodes well for next season. That's all we want - something to hope for, to believe in!

Feel's like his style of possession football is very similar in style to De Zerbi at brighton. Will be interesting to compare to Maresca's Guardiola influenced style of possession based football when Leicester and Southampton face each other.

You don’t have to be a Cardiff fan to admit it. You just have to be a decent football fan to see it, putting away the rivalry. Just like in September, I was at the CC stadium for your 2-0. After five minutes I said that you’d win, as your players and crowd were up for it and outclassed us on the night.
