Interesting! It’s nice to be able to get back to high speed mopic! I was an aerial instrumentation photographer when on active duty in the Air Force. Fastest camera we had was a 500 frame Millikan, although we did use a 3000 frame Mitchell in tech school. All 16mm, now we have video speeds exceeding a million frames. All my experience came in the mid 60’s!
Thanks for Watching! Yes things are very different than back when film was the only option. However even now getting high speed cameras that shoot film quality footage at speeds above 1200fps is expensive or they are hard to come by so its nice to be able to shoot decent 1080p slow motion right on an iPhone with no extra investment. I now have an iPhone 13pro and it shoots very good quality slow motion all the way at 240fps. Hopefully one day that will get to 3000fps like a Mitchell.
I use it about half the time I film with my iPhone. I use Filmic often as a C or D camera during documentary or live event shooting too. If I were able to launch the Filmic Pro camera from my lock screen, I would be using it for almost 100% of the video. That’s usually the only reason I use the stock camera app on my iPhone: speed+simplicity.

Can you make a video on FilMic shutter speed and whats needed. When we shoot, we get motion blurs.
Sure. Any specific questions you have? Generally to get natural motion blur you set your shutter speed to twice the frame rate. So at 120FPS your shutter should ideally be set to 240. To achieve this and still have a low ISO and proper exposure you’ll need lots of light. Outdoors is easiest.

Gotcha. We are months new to shooting, so we don’t know certain camera terminologies. But the overall aspect would help.
great and very useful.. I am trying to shoot at 60fps 1080 resolution.. but unable to get slow motion.. It just shows as 24 fps. However 120fps works fine.. Is there any trick or known issue with iphone Xs+filmicpro. please advice.
Not sure what is happening for you but make sure when you change your frame rate to double check that your playback is the same as your frame rate capture. This way you will have a true high frame rate shot to work with I. Post production, not the 24fps you are seeing. It’s possible you didn’t notice that your 60fps is somehow setting it’s playback to 24fps without you noticing. If you still experience issues after double checking that you’re using the right settings when you capture footage I would delete and reinstall the app
Thank you so much for the video! This helps alot! What is the best exposure and iso settings outdoor and indoor? One more thing I have read below that you can’t play the slow mo on filmic pro? But when I save it on my phone it plays now the slowmo... I’m confused... what will I use to edit? I’m sorry for asking too much, I hope you respond and help me... I’m just new with this app. God bless! :)
Hey Wilgie. Thanks for watching! We just released a new video detailing our editing process here: ruclips.net/user/edit?o=U&video_id=7BT37HpU9eY While that video should answer many of your editing questions, let me address each one here: There are really no "best exposure" settings for indoor or outdoor. Every scene is different based on the lighting but like I said in the video you want to lock your shutter speed at double your frame rate then use your ISO adjustment and lighting to get your exposure right. Filmic has some helpful tools in the center of the screen at the top to nail your exposure, I would recommend turning on zebra stripes, the far left option that looks just like a circle with zebra stripes, which will put blue stripes in any area that is underexposed and red stripes in any area that is overexposed. Don't stress if you have a little under or over exposure in small parts of your video, focus on the subject and the overall frame. Using our method to capture with Filmic pro does not work like your stock iPhone app, it works like a professional camera so footage captured at a higher frame rate than normal is not "slow motion footage" until you slow it down, its simply shot at a higher frame rate than normal (normally most cameras default at 24fps or 30fps). The footage is only played in slow motion when slowed down by an editor (your iPhones photos app is an editor and recognizes the higher frame rate footage). You can also edit the footage on your phone using an editing program like iMovie which will let you control the timing of each clip more like final cut pro does. While its a lot more work if you're looking to up the quality of your slow motion, this is how to do it. Shoot footage at high frame rates then slow it down during editing.
Thank you for video. So if I shoot some videos in 4k at 24fps and some videos in 1080p at 120fps, then when I put all videos into final cut pro, do I choose that total film will be in 24fps and then this clip shot at 120fps automatically becomes slow? Or I have to slow it down? By how much?
Anna Stelzer , In FCPX, when you make a new project, set the resolution to 1080p and 24fps, then when you drop your 120fps clip in the timeline, select it, then click on the speed editor below your preview window and click automatic speed. It will show you on the timeline what percentage the footage has been slowed down. 120fps should be slowed down to 20% of original speed on a 24fps timeline.
@@FergVision Very helpful video, as I am now learning about video. Regarding your answer above, why choose 1080 instead of 4K? Also how do you know the speed of your clip when using Imovie? So we should not change the playback rate to 24 when shooting at 120fps, instead slow down the clip 20% when editing?
You may have a storage or other issue. By default the app should record until your phone either fills up it’s storage, overheats or the app/phone malfunctions. We have recorded an hour long video using this method. Maybe try resetting/reinstalling the app and making sure your storage is free/phone is healthy software wise.
Ok so I'm filming a short film that requires 3 different speeds of slow motion as the character's brain speed picks up. In order to slow down, should I film at 60, 120, then 240fps or should I just choose 1 frame rate and mess with the speed in post? Thanks.
Great vídeo! Why when I rec with filmic pro 1080 60fps, and save in broll, the movie starts in normal speed and 3-4 sec later starts it in slow motion?
This is because your phones Photos app sees the video just like a standard iPhone slow motion video and is pre editing the video just like you will see with the stock camera app. If you edit the video you should be able to change when the video is normal motion and when the video goes to slow motion. For more control over motion we suggest using a full fledged editing app like Final Cut Pro X or Premiere Pro. If you’re looking to stay on the phone iMovie allows you to do some basic time manipulation.
I’m not too sure as I’m not familiar with the android version of the app or that specific phone. I would force quit and restart my phone, then if the issue persists I would reinstall the app, and if that doesn’t solve the issue I would reformat my phone and try again from scratch.
Hi there great job on this video, footage is silky smooth nice job, I was wondering if you could help me out with a question about using the slow motion in filmic pro , when you apply the settings you mention in the video which I did try even while the video was running, when I play them back through my iPhone 6s it just runs at normal speed does the iphone not play the footage back in slow motion like the normal slow motion built in the standard camera or do I have to put the footage through my editing software and then slow it down, sorry if this is a daft question I just would like to know what I am doing wrong can you help me cheers Gianni.
+GianniG thanks and for your question, You must slow your footage in an editor. I'll be uploading a video explaining how I edit the footage this week so stay tuned.
HARKIRAT SINGH slow motion video is normally captured at full speed then edited to play in slow motion. Watch our follow up video: ruclips.net/video/7BT37HpU9eY/видео.html for more on that. If you just want to take a quick clip and share it, the stock camera app on the iPhone is more appropriate, as the iPhone automatically slows your footage down and lets you do some simple editing directly in your photos app. As we discussed you will sacrifice quality and control for convenience.
*could be at 24fps. When I shoot I don’t want to lock in my destination frame rate. By shooting at 120fps with a 120fps play-back I give the footage room for other frame rates while editing including playing it back at 120fps full speed. It’s all about flexibility during editing. If I used 24fps playback then the footage would only be useful to those intending to slow it down to 24fps.
I just realized I accidentally put an asterisk before that comment. My apologies. To elaborate, you can absolutely adjust playback to 24fps if you want the slow motion to be ready for publishing immediately (much like the stock camera app) after shooting however you will be locked in to 24fps from then on as the video will be formatted at 24fps meaning every editing program will always see it as 24fps, not 120fps. So if you wanted to slow it down less or speed it up, those 120 frames are no longer available to manipulate. I have been asked this question quite a bit and seen it posed to others as well so I intent on making a video to talk about this aspect of shooting with Filmic Pro. Thanks for watching, I hope this helps, stay tuned for the video!

Nice tutorial! Unfortunately with Filmic, shooting outdoors even at 120fps mostly requires an ND filter - and the best ones come in at around $100!
Thanks!
