- Well, there is not much point me writing up a long description here so just watch the movie!
If 15 minutes is too long then...
Go to 4:45 to see the scary lift.
Go to 7:05 to see the motor room.
Enjoy!
##WARNING - I'm an engineer by trade and I am aware of the dangers in this sort of environment. High voltages exist here which can KILL you if you touch the wrong thing. Also, NEVER touch any moving machinery, even if it is not moving at the time - it can start up without warning and easily sever your fingers!! Just be careful out there people! ###
dont know why but it fascinates me with lift doors with gaps just seeing it moving through the floor and the light from the outside going past
Have you ever been caught in the machinery room by the management of the building?
@danielrichardbond Hi, that thing attached to the big wheel is called an ENCODER. It reports how many turns the motor has done so that the controller can calculate where the lift is in the shaft. This is how the controller knows where to slow down and stop the lift. The encoder here is quite old, and they are usually fitted at the end of the motor, not on a belt. The batteries are more than likely to be for the lift alarm during a power cut. Hope that answers your questions :)
Haha, thanks for sneaking into there and shooting this cool video for us! I love BtS!
I can’t help but get excited when you get excited
I wonder if that door motor is still growling away to this day.....
might be, unless it was worked on. idk.
Uh, that elevator (and even hotel) is scarier than the machinery room itself :D
Mr Chay is just as interested in your hobby as my boys are in my work.
The motor room seemed and also sounded like a server room.
The Italian Job. Good Video Matt.
Those cables don't look safe!
Just a bit dust, nothing to worry
A ton of grease and dust
" I'm an engineer " Famous last words!
Scary elevators are out of the ordinary especially when they are old
“È vietato l’accesso al personale non autorizzato”
“I’m sorry about that😅”
No problems, you make very good footage for us☺️
Google translate "Access to unauthorized personnel is prohibited". I guessed it meant that! :)
It's amazing they left that room unlocked!
Im quite sure it is in southern or central Italy where the rules and good sense are substantially ignored and neglected
@ranger26a Hehe..cool! Thanks for your comment!
It's always worth checking motor room doors - sometimes you get lucky like I did.
3:40
What that lift doesn't do is take forever to close its doors!
love the whiney noise that it makes
10:35 Nice sound
Elevators in my dreams are for some reason even worse
They aren’t even fully enclosed and have a big gap between the car and the shaft walls
Sorting through my liked videos and came across this video again. Wow, 2011. Undoubtedly these lifts have been modernised, the hotel possibly not even in business anymore...
1:52 wow really neat buttons
I get to be in rooms like this and better ever day!
13:35 “access to unauthorized personnel is prohibited” I think
Love the old school encoder fitted to the motor :)
Sounds like that motor could benefit with some new bearings.
@produKtNZ I was watching for LEDs changing or relays operating as the lift (ascensore!!) was in motion, but I didn't see anything happening (only the floor display changing). If I did then I would have certainly moved the camera angle. I agree that it's interesting to watch the inputs and outputs to the controller changing state.
Was that 7 segment display on the board the floor display? It looked like it showed -1 when the lift was on floor 1 and 13 when it was up at the 16th floor. Is there an offset or something?
I love these videos! Keep them coming!
+CountryGent67 Thanks :)
I worked as a maintenence man for my university back when I was enrolled and one of my responsibilities was elevator (lift) maintenance. ... The campus had all Dovers and a couple of 1960s Otis freight lifts.. The Dovers were all modernized but I am just happy there are other enthusiasts of lifts out there.... I am kinda a lone wolf with my love of them around my neck of the woods... So again Great Job and keep the videos coming Matt!
4:45 and 4:57 the door operator motor sounds very creepy, the motor of the lift itself has a powerful sound sort of to it wich sounds really cool
"...It's open!"
Nope, you had to open it.
This is a very modern lift mechanism. Some of the old ones are more interesting. I have seen some with thermionic valves in the control circuitry and cupboards full of switches and relays. Many of those ones had a cupboard full of spare parts as they were not simplified like this modern one. But still good to see.
Hiya, yes, what you say is certainly true about older systems being more interesting. This is what my channel is all about, and I'm not really 'too' interested in latest lift technology. Have a look at my playlist "best videos" :) Here is an example, the oldest lift machinery I've ever seen (1905!) ruclips.net/video/bpluwj-rXiU/видео.html
Theese are old italian FIAM lifts, they are now become very rare because of modernizations :( you actually was very lucky finding those ones in completely original conditions. I saw a lot of lifts like that but only 4 or 5 were original, by the way i am italian
PS:the most scariest thing about the staff only lift is the door operator motor it sounds really creepy for me
yeah this was VERY creepy (the doors). Thanks for the comment
Looks very simplified compared to the elevator system in my old workplace. 6 story parking ramp with TWO elevators side by side. The control room had racks of relays and was built in 1968. It was in operation till around 2005ish when the whole structure was demolished. Those machines ran on ac to dc converters with were of the motor/generator type. I spent some time up there watching it work. Kinda creepy but you get used to it......
would have loved to see those units. How they did things back in the old days was fascinating. Did you see my 1905 elevator videos? Now this was a GREAT find! ruclips.net/p/PLaq77KzM3KRQtHMRSl2kqAN9roBfoDJ-Z
what a sad neglected unit. I sure hope you are actually qualified elevator personnel....the cables are fine just dirt and fuzz on them, Likely another, building owner saving money on elevator maintenance. They take a big chance that there will not be a fatality because of lack of maintenance and yearly testing/inspection. 40 years in the trade here. QEI-1 certified..
If you looked carefully on the boards it say KONE . iWork on these lifts but the mess is done by the repair guys or maintenance guys. It got also an emergency rescue device in case of a power cut . Cool 😎
Thanks for the info. Yes, looks like many years of modifications and repairs to get into this state! It's probably been modded by now as this video was a few years ago (2012 I think)
"It was open, so I opened the door..."
Apparently it actually _wasn't_ open, then.
I assume the small motor connected to the flywheel and the lead acid batteries are some sort of back-up system in the event of power failure to take it to the next level? What do you think?
I do work on that kind of panel but it’s a duplex. It’s in that condition as the Maintanance guy should do a better job. But it’s nearly all original. The encoder is fitted as an optional as its not a gearless motor. But it works better with it. Nice work though.
Thanks for the comment :)
That looks fairly modern to me compared to some machine rooms I’ve seen. Are there any lifts still running with mercury arc rectifiers? Belsize Park deep level shelter still had them not that long ago, early 2000s maybe.
Only in Italy...
thank goodness (for me) they left the door unlocked ;)
@mrmattandmrchay Hi again! Watched your photos on Flickr, thanks for uploading. I have added some comments as well. The bottom PIA chip on the circuit board on the left is from october 1988 so this lift is about 20 years old, 22 years max.
I wonder what exactly is scary about this room....
Everything.
I wish I had those pocket sounds, so I could bring it to school xD
Can get these quite easily on the net. I think if you google "fun sound generator" it will come up? Not expensive either
I thought there were only 12 floors let alone 16!
And I think I know why chay thought it was 'stupid rubbish'.
There was no relays! It was a circuit board!
Interesting rack of control equipment. But in this day and age, it's a wonder they didn't ban you and them some. Sneaking into the elevator equipment room (with a camera no less) they might've turned you over the police on suspicion of "planning a terrorist attack"
That is very true, or you possibly act dumb, point to the roof puzzled and say 'sala'? That way they might just think you are trying to find the roof to take some high rise photos! Also, judging by the completely exposed motor and brake, governor and the sheave I can't imagine safety is high on the list, don't forget the gap on the door! This my favourite vid of the channel and I think I've finally found the hotel to visit (though that will not be disclosed)
5:16 what floor is that? Looks like the abandoned part of the hotel.
haha!! That's a small space between the main lift lobby and the service lift. I suppose it's where the staff that make up the rooms (this is a hotel) keep the trolleys out of public view when they are waiting for the lift.
There is either a light switch somewhere, or a PIR that would turn on the lights in that little lobby if I stepped out.
We have one in school that.... is very scary, someone in my class got stuck in there for like one hour.
Wow, now that's a lift video! Don't think i would have gone in there alone but you got a great result. That control system looks a bit 80s or at most early 90s to me. Got any closeup photos of the board so you can see the date code on one of the components?
I looked on Flickr but there's nothing on there yet.
And by the way: love the intro :D Now all you have to do is to get Chay interested in lifts.
Typical Italian job, they think wires are spaghetti and should be randomly thrown everywhere :/
@mrmattandmrchay Depends on how modern the building is. It looks to be the original motor and a partial controller upgrade
It's from the late 1970s
@@ag6371 11.. years...ago
Do the lifts still exist ?
It's funny, I am fan of all of your videos but for some reason always come back to this one. Strange.
+ajs2120 Thanks very much for supporting the mrmattandmrchay channel :) I like this one as Chay was only 4 or 5 here and he is so cute! Haha!
mrmattandmrchay how they unfortunately grow up! I've watched the out of order film you uploaded. Definitely an enjoyable one, I've just ordered a copy so I hope its subtitled!
I think FIAM are long long gone, the possibility of this still being in service (as it is in this video) must be quite remote now.
Oh you're in italy :-D .. the label "Manutenzione completa"(mente mancante) :-p
Yep - this was quite a few years ago now though!
Fiam ? I know an extremely similar lift that the one you filmed, it is way smaller though. I always thought it was from the 70's but the lift was actually built in the 90's. They also built the lift in my apartment building in the 70's. Kone upgraded it slightly but the relay logic is original
Cool! Before finding this, I'd not seen a Fiam before. This was in Italy, but it's a shame that I've never been back.
Update: the original Fiam relay logic of the 70's lift in my apartment building might go away soon as the lift is glitching a lot when going up and the relay for the basement refuses to stay on (we need to hold the button to keep the relay on) plus there is an advice saying that the lift will be shutdown for the whole next week. Kone did the buttons and inner door upgrade in 2012, but now looks like the 45 years old relay logic needs to retire as well :/
appropriately creepy....
Where is that hotel, i'm italian
I think it was in Milan, but it was a long time ago
@@mrmattandmrchay ok
If you push the 10th floor button twice, will it take you to the 20th floor? Just curious. 😋😁 Thanks for the video.
No
😂😂
EPIC MOTOR!!!
9:22 lets see... Floor set to -9, for testing purposes, of course.
XD
5:54 why do you like floor 3 so much - is it that hard to pick between 1 and 3???
I think floor 3 is where I was staying (hotel room) and it's probably not a good idea to go to the bottom floor as this is a services lift, probably find some staff down there where they would want to know what I was doing ;)
@TarzanAndConz :D Yes the FX box you sent gave the video a fun starting! And, yes, I took quite a few photos - I forgot about Flickr - but I will upload them tonight or tomorrow.
Thanks! Matt
@drenahmeti22 Of course :) There is a GoAnimate! movie heading this direction though!
@produKtNZ Do you think this was originally fitted? Or do you think it has been fitted since installing. I'm not sure.
It seems that you don’t have experience in old elevators especially FIAM or KONE. I worked on hundreds of them and they are safer than others . People who didn’t had experience on these can’t say they are scary. I worked on the early days of FIAM lifts and are still going strong since 45 years. On all lifts even known brands if installations are rubbish you can get a bad experience. If it’s the cheapest and worse lift installed properly it lasts a lifetime. I have been working on lifts for over 35 years including fabrication at workshop from doors to car to chassis to motor beds to brackets and go on site and install from a to z including electrical after fabrication of control panel. The worse lifts and complicated are otis. They got the name but not the product . I have seen broken motor gearboxes and beds crushed after testing emergency brakes so even the known brands are somehow crap. For me the best are IGV who used to do everything except motor and guide rails.
@produKtNZ Also, 12:58 That was the cover for the governor =\
Did you happen to see and status LED's on the controller boards for the shaft sensors? I find it's quite interesting watching them light up as the car passes landing markers :)
@Elevatorkid96 hehe, it's called passion I think! :)
Idk why I find machine rooms scary.
I used to find lifts scary when I was a kid. Back in the 80s and 90s lifts were like coffins, loud, abrupt and dark. Would do anything to avoid using one. Nowadays all the above are what im looking for ;)
What state/country is that hotel in?? I would really like to know... :)
Hmmm, a long time ago now! I think it was in Milan?
Italy
This motor room has Minecraft cave sounds
that noise that the doors make at 4:58 on that little lift that u said was scary is weird
What was that piece of yellow stuff stuck in the cable?
7:49 what’s that fan thingy?
It's not actually a fan, it's a shut down switch. This is a more open version:
ruclips.net/video/QAVUGRVw8u8/видео.html (see 6:13)
In the shaft, the lift doesn't pull the cable unless it overtravels (goes too high), if it does, then the wheel turns and shuts down the lift.
Also have a look at this video, this is what it looks like in the shaft: ruclips.net/video/1zC7LYQQPvg/видео.html (see 5:20).
Hope that helps.
@@mrmattandmrchay Thanks a lot! It was very interesting indeed.
@mrmattandmrchay Okay cool thanks for your reply. I've never seen that set-up before. Lead acid batteries seem a strange choice for that use, they're meant for high power short demand stuff. I've seen ni-cad battery banks before for alarms but not car batteries!
I'm on my laptop at the mo, I usually use my iPad to use RUclips so I think I'll take this opportunity to check out some of your favourites...
Am I right, Did Express have their escalators made by Italian Fiam?
400V Three-phase current is not a high voltage!
400V three-phase current still belongs to the low-voltage range.
High voltage only starts above 1 kV.
Correct, it is still technically low voltage. But high enough to kill oneself!
Dude when he just go look the old lift motor room that no motor and brake in that he hear sound that he hear
That's a music of elevator
there was a hotel I stayed in it was in new Mexico I think but it was. a well I forgot how many floors but the elevators where Otis series 1 I went to the top of the stairs and the lift room was unlocked I didn't go in cuz of like you said there are a lot of risks doing it so I didn't enter the lift room but it was cool Lol
Lift motor room speed: 21,54,97 miles per hour
Which hotel is that?
tbh, I can't remember, sorry! (too long ago)
What is the purpose of the small pulley on the floor?
It's an overspeed governor. If the lift goes too fast it will trip and mechanically activate some breaks on the lift and stop the lift.
Where is it?
Is there a sprocket at the pit that the chains go around?
Chay
PUFFLE!! OMG he's SO CUTE XD
+Gamer Flozer Chay or the puffle?! ;)
looks like it's time for the lift and it's components to be tuned up a bit.
I reckon the main lift motor and door motor must have been replaced by now. That is if the hotel still exists!
FIAM brandis one of the best Italian companies and now its called KONE
@Balage78Szfvar the brand FIAM is an acronym
"noci tostate" (IT) = "pörkölt dió" (HU)... in italian seems blasphemy eheheh
Chay's so funny!
In luxembourgh hotel Hilton theres also 2 of those but there abandoned
Abandoned elevator
I think it’s a death of a lift
Heavy duty
Is the thing at8:50 a safety brake???
Is the mechanism that drives the emergency brake
Italy?
Yes, I believe it was (long time ago now!)
i think i actually saw a similar lift somewhere i dont remember im italian btw
Ha ha ha ha!
Which city you were? I saw you were in Italy 😀
Hi Matt, what is the funny looking device on the floor at 07:48? Also do you think the locked motor room would have had the same style machinery? You could hear it working away as you tried the door that was locked, and it sounded the same as the machinery in the open room.
HMMMM, that's a good question. I'm not 100% sure, but my best guess is that it's an old over travel switch. If you see this ruclips.net/video/1zC7LYQQPvg/видео.htmlm30s then after 5:30, see 6:43 - this is what I mean. It's a static cable attached to a switch. If the cable is pulled, over travel switch activates.
I've looked at it again, is it possible that it might actually be some kind of axial fan/blower?
What model of camera did you use? Very good image quality for an 8 year old video.
With most cameras, if you have reasonably light then you're ok. That must have been my Sony DSC-WX1. Like in my latest video, video light is essential. I think I managed to get away without one in this video.
@@mrmattandmrchay Also, why was some of the video in 16:9 and other bits in 4:3? Did you have more than one camera?
What is elevator place
Yeah chay! listen to your dad! lifts are cool! naughty chay chay!
Kone Fiam Italia?
