    Prof. Dr. Vanessa Smith, MD, PhD, is the head of the Rheumatology clinic at UZ Gent since 2011. Since 2014 she is professor of Rheumatology at UGent. She has acquired expertise in systemic diseases and leads the Systemic Sclerosis unit.
    Prof. Dr. Smith is a member of several (inter)national scientific associations and consortia. Since 2016, she has been a member of the steering committee of the ERN ReCONNET.
    Since 2016, she has been the junior coordinator of the ERN ReCONNET subnetwork for Systemic Sclerosis. Since 2018, Prof. Dr. Smith has been chairman of the Flemish Network on Rare Connective Tissue and Musculoskeletal Diseases (Cabinet of Welfare, Public Health and Family).
    Prof. Dr. Smith currently holds a position as Senior Clinical Investigator within the Flemish Fund for Scientific Research and is chairman of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) study group on microcirculation in Rheumatic Diseases.
    She is an organizer and scientific board member of the second to eighth Capillaroscopy Course and a member of the EULAR network for training and research on microcirculation.
    In addition, Prof. Dr. Smith is co-editor of several books, (co-)author of several manuscripts and book chapters on systemic proficiency and capillaroscopy.
    In 2011, Vanessa Smith received the Belgian Cristina Pivetta Prize for 'Contribution to treatment strategies and diagnostic algorithms for patients with systemiclerosis'. She also received a grant from the Flanders Fund for Scientific Research for her research into capillaroscopy.
