- B. takes a look at DJI's Crystal Sky Monitor after its release in 2017 to see if it still holds up to the competition. Don't forget to subscribe for more drone videos (and remember to turn "ALERTS" on)!

5 years after this video was posted, the training organization for which I work just received a donation of a DJI M200 V2. As we started working on putting it in service, it started to look like we would not be able to load/run the DJI Pilot app on modern iOS or Android devices, and we'd only be able to operate the M200 with a CrystalSky. I found a used one in great condition, and it's very nice. HOWEVER, it apparently cannot download offline maps anymore. That is a big problem, and I hope we can figure it out. Forums seem to indicate no good support is available from DJI in 2024. I guess I'll find out...
Hey B, glad to hear from ya again bro. Thanks for the info
B, great review! Thanks so much for coming back!!!
I’d like to see a crystal sky vs the new smart controller if you have the opportunity to do so!
hi nick I have 5.5 chrystalsky which same size smart control screen my choice was this because of have other dji drones where as smart controller only mavic 2 and phantom 4 pro and possibly future drones thats how I made the decision plus 469 vs 649 cost chrystalsky has 2 micro SD card slots VS 1 on smart controller and run time longer than smart controller and can have additional batteries
HI B I recently got 5.5 chrystalsky don't have phantom to charge its battery I have mavic 2 and found adapter on Amazon that plugs{ about 20 dollars Canadian] into mavic 2 charger to plug into chrystalsky battery charger love Chrystalsky works with spark, mavic pro mavic air and mavic 2 later like to get 7.8" like your using but this fine for now, your providing great info your channel thanks
Been a While!! Crystalsky works good in sunlight and heat for me. No overheating vs. the iPad is a joy by itself. The Android 5.1 > same as the Nvidia K1 but it's brighter.
I don’t mind it. 🤷🏻♂️. Yes it’s glitchy AF, but it seems to hold up in the variations weather conditions I pilot in. And of course Swappable batteries is a huge benefit.
Great info B. 🤙🏼
You're the person I called to help me plan for this video. Huge benefit with the batteries...i just wish it was more versatile!
DRONR DRONE COMMUNITY I knoooww. Fams in town and workin 🤦🏻♂️
I agree with a love/hate relationship.. Sucks tha Dji took the Apple way and forcing you to buy a bracket and adapter if you don't have one for the charging hub.. I still keep my iPad in my bag for a back up just incase. I did hack my cs so I have other apps on it 😁. It really comes in handy with the hot summer days..Definitely wished it had video input . Thanks for the video.
Great video B
Trying to livestream with one is a real challenge. That is one of the few issues I se as wrong with it.
Sunlight alone makes it worth having when you are flying
Brutally honest. Thanks brotha, I was thinking about getting one but after your video will go with an iPad mini instead. 😁👍🏿
*SUBBED*
I get major video lag from my crystalsky. A real pain while flying. I need to figure this out. Firmware fully updated on CS and Mavic 2 Pro
Thanks B very good video give you a lot to think about
iPad works perfect and the battery last for days, AND with a hotspot can clear restricted airspace right on your controller.
I run both the iPad and a high-vis Crystal Sky. Yup the Crystal sky wins hands down for cinema work in bright sun light. I can see way better. However, I prefer to run iPad. In addition to video work, I have to do quite a bit of construction mapping etc and Pix4D, or Litchi, even if you get them to work on the Crystal Sky, is glitchy as hell and apt to crash during the flight and screw up your data acquisition. The iPad is just hard to beat and even though the Crystal Sky is beautiful in bright light. Normally it doesn't get mounted simply because the ease of use of the iPad far out weighs the draw back of the screen brightness. I normally put a hood on it and roll with it and I haven't had any real problems. Overall, the crystal sky was a waste of my money. Perhaps the next iteration of the product will be better but after this experience I would be hesitant to lay down my hard earned money to buy it. At least not until it has been widely put to use in the field...
Anyone have trouble with the backlight going out on these? I’m the drone program coordinator for a very large law enforcement agency in Arizona and we’ve now had 3 of these units go bad. We’ve sent them off to DJI for service but they’ve returned all of them saying they couldn’t duplicate the issues (probably because they’re testing them inside in the A.C.) I would normally say it’s because of the heat, but one of the units failed when the temp was 79 degrees....hmmm it’s a lot of money to spend on a display that, at least for us, is less than reliable. (We love the brightness of the units, just not their reliability)
since the crystalsky monitor is an android platform...How does the video latency compare with the latest version of Ipads??
imo flying with the CS made me a more confident pilot. Finally, I could actually see details. With a mobile phone...impossible. Also, I could finally see FOCUS! Another big plus. The single downside for me is it is a Android device and DJI is an apple centric company. As a result, updates/fixes/new functionality...seems to always come weeks and/or even months after they've been 'officially' introduced on apple devices.
I have the 5.5 since a year now and what makes me upset about their monitor is not the quality... but that I can't use it as a monitor on my GH5 very frustrating at that price. They would sell more with the option to use it as a monitor for different camera.
I wonder if an Andycine X7 would work well...
It is not working anymore with the Air 2 .Take a look at this tablet www.tripltek.com . Before I was flying with the CrystalSky 7 .This has the same brightness or better that the CrstalSky . And it is Android 8.1 . Bought it on Amazon. This is the way to go a 64 bits Tablet with 1000 nit and a battery that last a day at a maximum brightness.
Could this video been done in a shorter time?
$800 phone holder! Lol 😆
what about dji goggles
Don't laugh, but can you use it with sunglasses?
