My advice for newbies? 1) Buy some inexpensive tools and teach yourself how to do the basic setup, string changes and maintenance on your electric guitar. It's not that difficult, and there are lots of "how to" videos on RUclips. 2) Do not spend more than 1,000 (1.000) dollars/pounds/euro on gear until you can play at something like an intermediate level. There is so much good quality/reasonably priced gear available these days that it's just not necessary to spend more. 3) Try and practice consistently for at least 30 minutes every day. And be aware that, for most people, there is such a thing as too much practice. Yes, you can take your guitar to bed with you, but too many of the people who become obsessive about it end up leading short, unhappy lives. Oh yes . . . and remember to have fun!
Couldn’t agree more. I’ve been taking my lessons serious for a year now. I’ve had a guitar since I was 12. But only I only knew power cords. A few months ago I gave up trying to be like Jimmi, Eric, Rory and all my other guitar heros. And started really focusing on the simple things. Like really getting down my scales and learning the fretboard. And just having fun. And life has been grand. I learned some simple songs, that’s it. But learning the fretboard and scales has helped me, not only creatively, but I am happier in life. Now I want a keyboard and drum set.
U are totally correct about beginners full gain at ten. I know people that’s been playing for 20yrs plus that still like high gain at 10. I learn that gain max at 6-7 is my favorite. To here the string is very important also helps you learn to play clean
been playing acoustic about 2 years now, started age 55. looking to get an electric set up in the new year, great video as usual, you've been a big help getting me to where I am.
I watched that Pedal show to with Noel and Johnny marr it made me so inspired to get amazing at guitar there my favorite guitarist thanks so much Andy this video is the best 💖😎
Agree with all these points Andy. One additional one I was discussing with my guitar teacher last night was learning to think and navigating in intervals a lot earlier in your learning journey.
The most difficult part is finding those songs that are accessible as a whole. A lot of people end up struggeling with some other parts and move on (maybe not to lose motivation). That's why I love Andy's band program. It has a good selection of songs to learn as a whole.

That's really get me thinking to set sound preset of the new processor (lessen the gain) :) really like your videos What the newbie may be struggling with is the proper standing/sitting with guitar (maybe also the comfort with les paul/strat/tele - but it's too late if you already bought one 😄) - it is not obvious at first but impacts hands, back, legs etc during the long session
Something that probably all newbies and some experienced players do is play with all their tone and volume dials on the guitar at 10. These dials are there with numbers on them for a reason, dial down the volume and clean up the sound, use your tone controls, experiment.
Looking back: my biggest mistake was not focussing / thinking on the direction I wanted to go in the future. I always wanted to play metal, buy I've never worked on playing higher bpm songs or droptuning. I'm glad I learned a lot of chords / scales, but looking back, I would've tried something heavier sooner
Timing Timing Timing start off by playing slowly, even painfully slowly, and build speed up when you can play it fluidly and record your progress even if it's just on your phone.
I'm on my third year of the guitar journey and the one thing I would change is the gauge of strings. Started off and still have 10's on 2 out of 3 guitars but 9's are way easier to play. Unfortunately I got used to the 10's when I started and it's difficult to make the thinner strings feel natural :-// Mind you it also helps when tuning things down so
I went ahead and bought a Gibson Les paul. Sure it didn't really improve my playing, but it is now worth more than I paid for it. So it made financial sense if nothing else.
The string gauge thing is subjective. Rick Parfitt of Status Quo famously used very heavy strings (tram tracks he once called them) and that was a vital key to the Quo sound. Just find what works for you.
Play slower than you think is slow and don’t keep playing the same thing from the beginning all of the time. Play to where you go wrong, then practice that bit until you can play it. Then start playing again until you go wrong again then repeat. Eventually you will be able to play from start to finish, then is the time to start speeding it up.
You mentioned that you upgraded the Bridge pickup on your Epi to get the classic sound. Could you recommend the pickup to buy for the Epiphone Les Paul? I have an Epiphone Les Paul 1960 Tribute Plus but I'm not sure what pickups are on it. Thanks
@littlethislittlethat456 there's countless pickup choices, and I believe the ones in a 1960 tribute les paul are fab. Mine has a Seymour Duncan SH1 PAF style pickup at the bridge and it was a massive improvement on the stock pickup that was there before
Newbie’s buy a £150.00 Squire or similar guitar and spend £40.00 for someone to set it up. It will be better for you than a £300.00 guitar and a lot of fun. Then you’ll start reading about ‘Tone’ and you’ll spend a fortune never be happy again 😂

My mistake as a beginner is learning to many riffs than going to a other song not leaning the hole song 💖😘
That’s what I do..don’t have the patience to learn the whole song..just riff to riff lol.

Jimmy Page played with 8s when others were using 11s.

Always play with a backing track, drum loop or metronome (yea, I know practice what you preach)

He did that because he used different tuning and if he didn't he would have broke strings
