One of my earliest childhood memories. from the mid 1960s, was seeing Princess Marina when she visited our local Council Offices. Not very glamorous for her, maybe, but so exciting for us. She had elegance, charm and style and, I believe, was much loved by the general public.

Always so elegant..her earlier life in Paris as an exile and being a relatively poor Royal...Marina spent time around the Fashion Houses of Paris...Her time there taught Marina how to "accessorise" making a simple outfit...stand out, Marina used these lessons all her life.
Marina never gave in to "fashion" she knew what suited her and had a style of her own... One of the first members of the British Royal family to wear trousers and to paint her nails ! Indeed Marina lead the way for our Queen Elizabeth to wear trousers. Soft colours were the order of the day, indeed a colour was named in her honour...Marina Blue.
Prince George her Husband was (in his day ) a fashionista in his own right and no dowdy Princess was for him! He chose well, the British people adored her from the very first. Unassuming, dazzlingly attractive, intelligent, well educated and willing to work. Whats not to like ! She died with her oldest Sister Olga also a great beauty... and her 3 children at her bedside.

Truly an elegant lady. This coming Sunday there's to be a documentary broadcast on UK television, bizarrely titled, ' Princess Marina, the Forgotten Royal '. I have no clue as to why she would be referred to as 'forgotten'. Forgotten by who, I wonder? She died over 50 years ago so of course she's not going to be at the forefront of the public consciousness, but I would hardly say she was forgotten. However, I shall watch it and can only hope it will do her justice.

Wars and revolutions had toppled a number of thrones, thereby making eligible princes hard to come by, on the royal marriage market. So it was no surprise that she couldn't easily catch a husband, despite her beauty and elegance. Her older sister, Princess Olga, couldn't manage better than a cousin of King Alexander I Karageorgevich of Yugoslavia. He and Prince Paul were members of a native, upstart dynasty with no genealogical ties to established dynasties before their respective marriages.

A beautiful lady, she was always referred to, by ordinary people, as Princess Marina although everybody was aware she was Duchess of Kent. As a Princess she easily out-ranked the wives of the other Royal brothers, but of course she then took her husband's rank. I remember that my parents thought she was treated shabbily by the Royals as a widow. She had to continue to work at "Royal" duties to earn from the Civil List.
