Oil in spark plug well (370Z)? It may not be the rocker / valve cover and related gasket.

  • During my winter maintenance work, for two years, I found oil all over the top on my spark plug (above the threads) and had it oozing into the ignition coil, which was the understandable cause of ignition misfires.
I ended up replacing the rocker / valve cover gaskets twice and then the rocker / valve cover itself thinking it might be warped. Year three, STILL OIL IN THE WELL!
Turns out, the rocker / valve cover and gasket was not my issue...
The gasket / RTV between the cylinder head and VVEL ladder assembly on my Nissan 370Z was the problem.
Removing the VVEL ladder assembly, and related VVEL actuator sub assembly, was far too risky to do to just add some RTV.
    I found a better way.

Glad you made this video, I think I may have the same problem. I have no oil leaking in spark plugs but part of that gasket is flaking off and I'm chasing a random misfire

Would a catch can relieve that pressure

Did you have oil in more than one spark plug hole ? Or was it just one indicating one of the seals had internally went bad.

It was leaking into two of the wells, due to the RTV not properly applied during engine build done by east coast shop.
