Two of the greatest movies ever made, with completely opposite dispositions.

I think that the draw of Apocalypse Now is based in the fact that many veterans of Vietnam DON'T want to talk about it. So this is a way for those who didn't or couldn't serve, as well as the following generations, to try and grasp what these people went through. They're trying to find a basis for empathy and understanding.

The David Foster Wallace quote is like a face in a mirror that I've had an inkling of, but was not been able to see clearly...now I have.
Keep it up, this was tremendous for me

Amazing connections between 2 of the best movies ever. And I always tell a friend om mine that all Vietnam movies are good and that is because of these two and many others, however I could never find the words to substantiate it. But you did it! These films show the pieces of the heart and mind of the world that we live in.

I’ve always been curious about this movie, but was afraid to watch it due to it’s violent and disturbing images. Thank you for helping me to understand the movie from an intellectual point of view.

I was deposited into Apocalypse Now when I was 12 with a friend by his mother who left us there and went...who knows where. Quite an interesting experience for a 12 year old.

Just stumbled into your channel, and love your work, content, and style. I am especially appreciative of your skill of analysis and scene cutting. I have never seen Apocalyse Now (though I have read Heart of Darkness a couple of times), but now I want to see it. I am reading a biography of sociologist and literary scholar Rene Girard. Your comments made me wonder how Girard would interpret the scapegoat scene. (Girard viewed religion not as the cause of violence, but as the societal force that keeps us from violence and killing each other through the mechanism of the sacrifice of a scapegoat.)

I wasnt really expecting this video to be of a religious nature. I DO like the comparison though, but i think it goes a lot deeper than that. Either way, thank you for your interesting take!

Really, really cool. Love this kind of video. I like the articulation of your thoughts on it and I find that you offer me ideas which tie into my own experience with my own life in each of your videos, they feel almost personally crafted towards me at times. Thank you.
Not sure if you’re taking any suggestions, or would choose to go into anything I might suggest, but I’d love to hear your take on Cloud Atlas.

They don't make movies like this anymore. Both were a reflection of their respective eras.

Okay. First of all: amazing detail and philosophical content. I never saw the childlike insides being replaced with gray misery in each of us, but it does make sense.
However, the parallels of Apocalypse Now and Forrest Gump are not enough to make them connect as much as you suggest.
Yes, Forrest Gump does pay tribute to Apocalypse Now. It does take that version of Vietnam and puts Forrest inside it to show that dichotomy. But it does end there. Forrest Gump goes to other places, showcasing other messages and satirizing and portraying things outside the scope of Apocalypse Now.
As such, you may go too far with the comparison. But I get that Forrest Gump made you understand Apocalypse Now. But I do think that is your personal experience and not a common one.

    • @MoralofthisStory
      @MoralofthisStory  2 года назад +2

Agreed. There is much more to Forrest Gump. This is really about Apocalypse Now and my personal perspective on it. I will eventually do a whole video on Gump and it’s themes.

Redux is a very different movie than the other version(s). The extra stuff is just awful and breaks up the momentum of the movie.

Just as with Marlon Brando, the producer of this video also has not read an important work by Joseph Conrad
