- We went to North Korea to try and penetrate the Korean Feature Film Studio, the state-run film production facility west of Pyongyang: a sprawling lot that at its height produced around 40 films a year.

You could say that North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il has two primary obsessions: maintaining nuclear weapons capability as a means of protecting his "hermit kingdom," and thwarting pressure from outside forces like America and the rest of the industrialized world to open his country to modern things like electricity... and he's obsessed with film. He loves movies. It's rumored that he has one of the largest private film collections in the world. His favorite film is Gone with the Wind and his favorite actress is Elizabeth Taylor. He's a film collector and bona fide cinephile, but he's much more. He's everything really. He's a director, a producer, a financier, a costume maker, set designer, screenwriter, cameraman, sound engineer... and he's also a film theorist. His masterwork on aesthetics and practice is "On the Art of Cinema" (written and published in the early 1970s). In it he gives himself the humble title, "Genius of the Cinema." He built an extensive film studio in Pyongyang and when he couldn't find someone to make his film he did what any self-respecting eternal leader and great president would do... he kidnapped one.

You know he's insisting on them getting the titles correct because he doesn't want anybody, including himself, to get killed over it.
Cassandra White and Shane was being a dick about it
Oh shut up ....they love their leader
@@lakiog1938 *Fear
@@zacharypeavy7801 no, he wasn't being a dick he was showing how ridiculous the whole play is. If they're told to enforce that title thing then how much is they guy willing to put up with? he wasn't trying to get him to slip up so he'd get killed or something
Greg S this is a country where you and your family can be sent to prison for the rest of your life for accidentally folding a newspaper with the leader’s image on it, or not bowing enthusiastically enough. Guides can absolutely be reprimanded for not enforcing their stupid rules and Shane was pushing it a little. It sounds ridiculous to us but to them it’s a reality that’s been enforced their entire lives.
Man, these documentaries are so badass: screwing with the Russian mafia, infiltrating into North Korea, being chased by the FSB, local militia and north Koreans at the same time, having a spectacle in the biggest stadium of the world take place just for you and a select others, singing karaoke with the generals of a dictatorship.
I wish my life had that much substance.
That camera guy is also lucky
@@sixtysyxti3235 Agree, but it's so dangerous because he could be arrested and sent to jail
TheUnifier vice journalism is very soft overall but they’re filming is superb
What’s the video involving the Russian mafia? Link? Also FSB video?
@@kevray ruclips.net/video/awQDLoOnkdI/видео.html
its a 7 part series about North Korean labor camps in southeastern russia, gets pretty hectic, id watch.
I find it amazing that after 5 days of literally nothing, all shane had to do was put flowers on a statue and bow just to see a film studio
Chairman Kim Jong-Il, General Kim Jong-Il, Great Leader Kim Jong-Il
President Kim Il-sung!
Get your Kim's right!
+Roberts Pauls I knew someone who thought they named their whole family the same first name 'Kim'... it was my politics teacher...
Lol!
For me, that was the greatest scene of involuntary comedy 1:54
What about, kim jong un? 😏
Eat kimchi
Is there a video in which Shane is not drunk? lol
but can you blame him? He's always in some fucked up place.
At least he's funny when drunk.
Nick Schweizer i know right? guess hes the only one in the vice crew with the balls to go...
I hope not.
LawlCakes -Old- I have been to North Korea 🇰🇵
i dont get how this guy has gotten away with making so many vids on north korea
it ok to show what they show you
Because the us spin is bs
James Daniel the US only puts on their media bad things about North Korea when they get told to I.e if he is testing weapons
When he stops testing you never hear of all these horror stories do you
Think about it you might actually wake up one day
matty d where did you find that Informationen
matty d thanks. Iam trying to find it
That suit he was wearing actually look pretty dope. Other than what it represents. its kinda nice
True
Valeria Carreon the Chinese have the same suit. It's just Asian style.
“中山装”in Chinese, "ZhongShan suit"in English, old style Chinese suit around 1900-1950, maybe, not pretty sure about the time peroid.
I wonder if they let him bring it back to America...
Einer Fonseca very beatle-esq
The fact that your just dancing with North Korean generals at a karaoke is amazing
Vice what happen? You were so awesome in these times.
They got shot lol
Vice media grew its a news company at these times around 2012 they werent as big so they can get away with these things now they hire journalist and are limited to doing crazy research like this
Well, as far as I can tell, this Shane guy made a billion dollars and was like, 'eh do whatever'
@@tedubadu2536He probably got investors that want him to be woke.
Oh my god my heart was racing during that “get your Kims’ right” part. That was horrifying.
“Does general Kim Jong il have a son?”
“I don’t know.”
*Kim Jong Un has entered the chat.*
This is the stupidest comment ever.
@Luke Lucas Got em
Nobody (officially) knew he had a son until his funeral.
@@TheUnknownHarbingers yeah he was previously in Switzerland , as Switzerland u know welcomes terrorists
@dingle Berry I believe before 30 December 2011 , cuz that's when kim-jong-il dies and kim jong Un comes into power
You can tell that Mr Kim was bricking it the whole time because he knew if he didn't correct him he was fucked
So, is wearing a North Korean-style suit and going to a statue like some sort of secret password? Did the Generals really give Shane that advice?
6years and nobody has any info or update on thos question? Lol
Bret Smith 6 days
Year
Guess what ? OP is killed by NK assassin .
Bret Smith quick update; no
When he kept forgetting to say chairman or general 😂
Honestly Mr. Kim who was explaining the proper English nomenclature for "dear leaders" seemed very polite and well-meaning.
Omg it's the same in China 40 years ago, people have to call Mao the great leader Mao or chairman Mao, anyone who call him MAOZEDONG would be reported. Even till today, my grandma's mind set is to call him chairman Mao. When Mao die, LITERALLY EVERYONE had to CRY (or at least pretending) in the public!!!!!! My mom said that even she was not sad at all, people's crying made her upset and she cried too!!
We had the same stuff going on in my country for some 60 years, and it only ended around 25 years ago. Thing is, we kinda got sick of our dictator and killed him. Other than that, we were exactly like North Korea. Communism/dictatorship is batshit crazy, there was secret police all over the place, if someone said something bad about "the supreme leader" they'd most likely end up dead.
+Soph LeOaf Yes, you're right. It became pretty awful sometime after the mid 70's, when the food became scarce. People had to line up hours in long queues just to get food. And not just any food, each family had a weekly ration of food: 1 loaf of bread per family, 1 litre of cooking oil per family and so on; things like bananas or gum were considered somewhat of a luxury, and people ate meat only few times a month.
I believe the worst part if this whole ordeal was stripping people from their posesions - you weren't allowed to own any farming lands or houses/appartments, whoever stranded up for themselves ended up being beaten in jail for some time.
Still, the youth found ways to relax and have some fun, our political regime wasn't so harsh compared to North Korea.
***** Oi.

It's unreal how scared that tailor is when even speaking of "The Great Leader"... Wow
This guy have balls heaver than weight of earth
3:55 ... That arm O_O
Shieeeetttt
its north korea power
holy crap!
That's called hyper mobility. 😬
I think it’s really the way his shirt sleeve is makes his arm look weird
it's not that hard! great leader kim jong il, general kim jong il and f*ing pokemon charmander kim jong il, then just president kim il sung. i involuntarily learned it because he had to repeat it to you so many damn times and you kept reminding me by saying it wrong every single time. how can you wonder why they weren't being more helpful?
R0DSTER lmfao i know this comment is three years old but i legitimately laughed out loud reading this, hope life is teeating you well bro
Great leader Android 19 Kim Jong ill
he’s just messing with the guide
man that tailor is so cool!
3:55 the guide has a fucked up arm
Oh dear...
I think it's just the way his sleeve is hanging. He's pretty scrawny like all other North Koreans due to their lack of an actual diet... except of course, Kim Jong-Un.
nah he totally does
I just had to scroll down to see if anyone else saw that
Yea probably was tortured
what's up with the guys arm at 3:54
+Daniel Woodford Pretty sure arms arent supposed to bend like that lol
@@aplaguedoctor406 my dudes arm was on a different existence. even his arm wanted to run away.
Glitch in the Matrix.
😂😂
Dubble jointed. I can bend min like that aswell
Oh my god that tailor made me cry. I’ve never seen so much sincerity
5:04 does not refer to Kim Jong-IL as the Great Leader!!!!!! send him to the labor camp immediately!
Do you remember when Vice actually made this kind of content? I know. It happened. I wish they held this kind of moralistic unbiased journalism. It’s from a perspective, as what the viewer would experience by being there. I recognize the dangers.. and that’s fundamentally what journalism is. To report news, what’s happening, without political views only to present it to the people of the world.
It’s not a documentary, its news.
What happened?
Edited: Grammar
They post bull crap now, just naked and useless bull crap.
I wanna hug that narrator for cinemer and koreer lol.
Whoever paints all those pictures is a brilliant artist.
The interaction with that tailor was horrifying
The level of indoctrination is vile
Angel Irizarry wtf you talking about the guy was educating him
Going to a country and getting it’s famous leaders mixed up is a lack of respect
He helped him out moron
It's sad to see the fear in their eyes whenever they are asked to "reveal something"
I'm so happy you guys posted this!
The North Korean documentary is one of my favorite videos, and this was the perfect follow up.
My only regret is that these were so short. :[
Keep up the good videos vice.
At 3:54 the tour guy's arm is probably like that cause of torture. Shin dong hyuk , an north North Korea guy who escaped has his arms like that because they bound his arms to his back in an awkward position for 24 hours.
He kind look like Che Guevara wearing that suit lol.
I love the look on his face when he realizes that he just said "It's totally insane" out loud. Lmao
Thanks for uploading them all at once, Vice!
“I have the shits” don’t know what I am eating half the time, then wears cream trousers 😂 nice one mate
In the end shane started calling him “great leader” even when not around the guide lol
Great way to show you can get far with a little respect, big lesson to learn here in between the lines people. You don't necessarily have to agree but you can at leat respect you fellow men!
thumbs up!
He didn't even take his sunglasses off when paying his respects
Partying with Generals and going to enormous mass gymnastics displays sounds pretty dope.
Great Leader, General, Chairman, Great President, Great Filmmaker, Great Guitar Watcher, Great On Spot Suggestion giver.
The team that made this are very brave. Thank you for making this!!!
The journalist in this video(shane) is literally a billionaire now
This guy was the CEO of vice(until 2018)... I kinda miss him tbh
He is the founder and owner of VICE
u guys have really worked hard to film this. thank u!:)
3:55
That arm.
Dafuq
I'd love to know how you guys get this footage of the country. I know they like check all your photos and film before you exit the country so how do you get all of this out. I'm sure most of it is ok but like i don't think they'd appreciate the 'totally insane' part for example. Do you stick the SD cards up your butts or something? seriously
tika tika toc there are basic tricks to hide your data at hidden partitions, to make "dead copies", because when you delete data, in most cases you can still restore it. takes like 5 minutes on a laptop
I thought they just film continuously for dozens of hours and hope the officials wont sit through the entire thing
I cant believe it has taken this long to find VICE! I am loving it!
Thanks man, ill have to check out that documentary! :)
I would act really amused by all the little performances. Like absolutely mind blown. It really is spectacular if you think about all the practice it takes for tons of people to synchronize the way they do. Truly a beautiful culture. So sad that they aren’t treated with humanity.
2:40 Omg, this guy is acting like the character from Spngebob who doesn't know what you're saying unless you make fart sounds.
being able to say you did karaoke with north korean generals is quite the achievement.
5:55 This drawing style is so similar to the style of Geova's witnesses.
Coincidence? I think not!
the balls on this guy, man..
That suit made him look like he’s John Wick
03:55 that guides Arm is like hyperflexion
OMG, thanks for the video, thanks! How come they allow you take video like this?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA the dialogue at 2:05
At 3:55, the guide's arm looks like a bayonet.
It is from all thr pointing
wonderful painting!
The music in this series sounds like fantastic roadkill....cant stop listening to it
I wish Vice was like this now.
4:05 sounds like it’s straight out of South Park XD
“Sinemer” 🤣
I thought that too but I dodn't remember the focus on the film studio. I certainly remamber the hotel with one floor being used - maybe they used the footage from one trip to make 2 different documentries?
you must have filmed there during monsoon season. i have seen a quite a few clips of you being in the rain xD
4:08 "Herving pinpointed cinnamur as the mehn link of ert and letratur..."
LOL
This guy has the most epic drinking sessions of any man Ive ever heard of. When he isnt pissing up with militant mormons in the middle of the most dangerous town in the world for journalists, hes pissing up with North Korean generals. Insane :P
That painting is insane
You look snappy in those threads Shane ;)
Minute 3:54, what happened to that guy´s arm? ha ha ha
This is crazy it makes me very sad and confused, it straight up blows my mind in a bad way
This is great, kinda shows what films and media do to the people all around the world as well. Kim knew what he was doing with the film studio
Anyone else notice the flower wrap was Hello Kitty?
To be honest, he did look a lot more respectable in the suit. It's just a well tailored suit. I don't think that dressing well to get favors is just a north korean thing. People will always treat you with more respect if you treat yourself with more respect.
I like dat suit, I want one nowww!
This was like a video game mission, some man whispers you a secret. Go change your outfit and talk to this guy, pay respects then you can proceed
Okay 2:00 - 2:49 was HILARIOUS. you just know the last one was deliberate lol
