    I am with you about charts making it easier to knit lace. I have that book and made that very shawl, not as a square, I adapted the pattern and did it as a triangle. I love to knit lace shawls! So glad to see others sharing my interests.

    These charts make it far more complicated for me. But it is great to hear of your experiences. And ideas sometimes takes a while to cement.

    Im the kind of knitter/ crocheter who works better with written patterns rather than charts

    I seem to be the opposite, but then again I've never done embroidery. I grew up with written patterns for both crochet and knit, which I am grateful for because I can't read or follow a chart for the life of me. If there had only been chart patterns I'd never have known the joy of both these hobbies. I think for those right-brained thinkers, there are charts, and those of us left-brain thinkers, we have words. (I hope I've got the brain sides correct!) I do love your videos though.

    I find it discouraging that when working from a well known book you had to go looking for corrections, and that they were so drastic. The book should be recalled and replaced with the corrections! As a knitwear designer myself, if the mistakes were that plentiful I would go to my publisher to correct as I suggested. I have nearly purchased that particular book several times. Sad to say, I'm glad I did not.

      What should a knitter do with a book with errors and no info about errata?

    • @courag1
      @courag1 4 года назад

      When a book is set-up for going to print, unless the author of the book furnished his/her own chart, it would be up to the graphic artist to chart it. Some charting software is able to build a chart for you, however, unless a publisher is going to do enough work to make it worth their while to buy or subscribe to the software, you will get a wide variety of charts and their accuracy may not represent the pattern correctly.
      When people test knit a project such as on Ravelry, they can find the errors or places where the instructions were missing something. I've found some errors which make patterns unusable. I am both a graphic artist and a knitter but, unless you are doing a test knit, if the pattern you charted is right or wrong, is still up to the customer to buy off. They may have false confidence that it is always going to be right. And all of a sudden you have a dreadful pattern.
      What is the solution? I suggest if you have found a designer whose pattern are successful, the outcome from future patterns if she/he is using the same publishing company, will likely be reliable. If the pattern has loads of people who have knit the pattern, it is well worth it to see if they had trouble. The errata will be noted on the detail page of the pattern. But you can look at how people have adapted the pattern to suit their own needs, using yarns not suggested or needle sizes, etc.
      Some free patterns are wonderful. I love to knit from charts, but all charts are not created equally, some are easy to follow, some are a visual nightmare.
      If the pattern is a .pdf, I like to save it to Acrobat on my iPad 4 because I can edit the pattern so I can have a highlight and move that highlight as I work up the pattern. I've found that it is a great way to keep track of where I am and has cut down significantly on how much I rip out a lace pattern.
      I have used the Acrobat Professional software, but in terms of ease of use, it is so tedious to just highlight and then move a highlight, the tool is not designed for anything but text. And with moving an element which was transparent in a program you may have built the chart in (for myself), it just is not user friendly at all.
      If there is no chart, one can be made for it, and you can use even Word or Excel if you do not have a program like CorelDRAW, Xara or Adobe Illustrator. I do not have charting software.

      Hello, I recently got interested in knitting lace and stumbled on your podcast where you explain quite clearly what lace knitting is all about... I was also planning to buy the book by Meg Swansen... Is there an errata-file somewhere on the internet where those mistakes are corrected?... thank you in advance... Can't wait to begin my first project :-)... Thank you for your enthusiasm.

    Im on fire if the instructions are written out. I think charts are very completed and require too many steps to actually understand. first you have learn the symbols, then read them the proper direction and remember where you are. Im not good at map reading either!

      PS. if there is only a chart I will write it out, proofread it and THEN I'm off to the races!!!
