This happens way more than it should. We did this to other creators and other did this to us too. Super weird feeling. I'm slowly coming to terms with it. Parallel thinking happens all the time, there is nothing you can do to avoid it.

I strongly think you should release it (although for all I know maybe you already have). I think your video adds context that Grey's video doesn't (his video is great in different ways), and I also think you may underestimate the number of people who are 1. interested enough to watch two videos about overlapping but not identical topics (like me), or 2. will never see Grey's video because of the various vagaries of the Internet.
I really liked the video, for the record, and felt you explained both the ship of theseus and the Sorites paradox really, really well. The Sorites paradox is particularly interesting I think for people to consider, so yeah I would definitely upload it. You'll have me and others in comments explaining that you aren't ripping anyone off. -John

I know, my comment isn't about the video. I just wanted to say what I felt.
I'm a residential architect, so let me tell you about houses: they're all the same. There's fundamentally only so many different ways you can design a house worth living in. Duplication happens absolutely all the time. Have you ever noticed how similar all houses are? Of course not, because despite their similarities, they're all subtly unique because they were made by different people for different people, and people love those little differences so much they forget how similar they really are. So I say yes, release the video, because I've seen one interpretation, but now I want to see *your* interpretation.

+TheJaredtheJaredlong It's a tough one Jake, for sure. I watched CGP Grey's vid last night and as you know, it's very good. Your vid is also very good and gives you the feels. At first I was gonna say to scrap it and start something new but TheJaredtheJaredlong makes a point that changes my look on it. By the time this is ready for release a little time will have passed and the 2 vids are different enough that each will stand on their own. If you wanna acknowledge CGP Grey in your vid, that's up to you but I don't think it will be necessary. (ps. Grey's vid didn't give me the feels like yours did).
Hello! Thank you for all of your advice, input and support. Hearing from other creators that've been in similar situations has been extremely inspiring, as well. CGP Grey has a lovely video on his 2nd channel expressing his thoughts in a really wonderful way on this topic. I ended up finishing the video today and uploading it over on Vsauce3. I know it can seem like such a trivial issue (It's just a video, Jake!) but, as with any creative endeavor, you get so invested and attached to it that it becomes something deeper.

+Jake Roper What CGP Grey said in the video on his second channel was legit because I just started Hello Internet which is CGP Grey and Brady Haren talking. About 9 months ago they had an episode where they discussed that same matter and both Brady and Grey agreed that whoever is uploading the video second should still do so.

years ago there was this X Files episode that was due to come out. 3 days before the episode came out some of the events featured in the episode happened, and some people were hurt. the events that happened were completely unrelated to the episode, it was a coincidence through and through. They still aired the x-files episode, but with a disclaimer at the beginning that explained the episode had been made months before, and had no connection to recent events. this was my inspiration for the comment I made above

I think you should definitely release the video, but maybe at the end or in the description acknowledge that both of you happened to go over the same topic. I think you did an amazing job with the video, and while there are definitely similarities in yours and Grey's videos, you guys have a very different way of presenting the facts. Your video is a gem and I'd hate to see it go to waste, really made my day watching it!

This is why CGP grey doesn't follow RUclips, so he never even knows and doesn't get deflated by stuff like this. You should release it, but perhaps have a preamble telling the whole story about CGP grey's video.

Just watched both and yeah, you both talk about similar things but Grey talks about it as a study of the Teleporter from Star Trek, whilst you talk about about Paradoxes in a more broad sense which I believe makes your video a different beast from Grey's.

First things first, this happens all the time in science! I watched Grey's vid earlier today and just watched your vid. I STRONGLY urge you to complete it and put it out in the world. They have different "feels" to them and each has merit. It would be a shame for it not to be added. Keep in mind people off in the future will stumble across it & won't care that there is a similar vid put out at the same time. This is what makes youtube such an awesome medium! Creators can use shared knowledge and compile vastly differing products!
Unfortunate timing, but not necessarily problematic. It's funny too, because I just watched a 2 year old "DNews" video about teleportation today, literally minutes before seeing the CGPGrey video pop up in my subscriptions feed. I suppose this proves that although the videos of this nature are all similar, the timing of the release doesn't matter much. In my mind, Grey's video was the duplicate today... but I still didn't think any less of it. It's just like music. I'll listen to the same song played by different artists, because I want to hear their interpretation. A duplicate (no paradoxes, of course) is no lesser than the original.
I also feel that your video is unique enough in other regards, that it more than makes up for the similarities. In my opinion, it's good to go.... but if you're personally still uncomfortable with the release, you can just add more material. Either way, I'd say that without a question your video will be well received. Best of luck to you, in all regards.
seeing all these comments, aswell as cgp grey 2's video is really heart-warming. In many walks of life, including close communities, people ditch/ignore others in said communities. but you don't. +Kursgesragt +volgbrothers +cgp grey all have expressed support and empathy. All of you and many other youtubers of your genre show kindness need, not only on the Internet, but on this planet. many of you could have ignored this, gotten on with your work and let +Jake Roper 's fans comfort him. but you took that time that could have been put towards anything to help a friend you may or may not know. so I thank you for showing some random but just as beautiful kindness in such a vast world.

There's no reason you shouldn't release it at this point! You bring a unique perspective that only you can bring! What if Stephen King hadn't released The Shining just because Burnt Offerings had been released before? Same genre, same idea, but both are great and peacefully coexist.
You should get Grey to chime in at the end of the video oratory of it supporting you or it. I think he'd be up for that..

Release it! You mention not doing it because he explained it well, but sometimes hearing the same content and different words helps SO much for actual understanding. For my organic chemistry, I'll read the book, go to lecture, Khan Academy, and then watch even more RUclips videos about it. Replication of content isn't bad, it's helpful for memorization.
Jake! Release the video but add an intro with this message you post here explaining the situation. I think communication is key but people love your thoughts and you shouldn't filter it.

Having watched both videos, I have to say upload yours. The topic is similar but the focus is still different. It is like two teachers teaching the same subject, how they explain and communicate the topic will always be different. Still doesn't mean your explanation is any less valid. Guys, I understand your concerns about releasing similar videos almost simultaneously but trust me, from a viewer perspective that is definitely not a big deal. You are one awesome community of creators who usually share the same fan base and we appreciate all the effort you put in researching and making the videos, so please keep them coming without worrying about these coincidences. In the long run it does not even matter. We love you and want to see more and more :)

Firstly and most importantly, part of the reason why people watch your videos is because it's you. We love you and care about what you make. We like watching your update videos too, since we get to learn what you are up to and how you feel. Even though it hasn't been a positive experience for you and it's sad to see you suffer, we like to see that you exist, basically. And with that, offer our support.
Even though Grey made his video and did a really great job doing so, it doesn't make your video less important, and people who only watch your channel would have missed out on the fascinating information completely.
We like seeing you tell your stories in your own way. And of course, there will always be responding negatively, but that's not the vast majority. It's good that you did your best explaining the situation so that we all know what's up, and we choose to believe you.

First of all, you shouldn't worry about people saying that you "copied" someone else's video. You're free to talk and explain every topic you want because nobody owns topics for videos or conversations.
That being said, I'd love to see the video, but just as you said, what would be the point of it if someone else already released it? that's why my advice would be, release the video as the first part of a longer video where you talk about paradoxes other than the ship of theseus one. That way we'll get to see the video and you'll be able to explain other topics that aren't so fresh in our memory.

I used to always question why there were so many books and videos on inner peace, spirituality and enlightenment that reflected similar ideologies, basically sharing the same advice to achieve pure happiness, with the only difference being the creator of the material. Then it dawned on me that it all comes down to which author speaks to your soul, and explains it in a way that resonates with you, the reader/viewer. Which is why you should always choose to share your views and feelings, even if others before you have done similarly. I am glad you shared your video, and perspective. You Rock The Casbah!

I think it still differentiates itself enough to be considered different. I think you should release it, I am sure Grey will understand. Even put a disclaimer or even say about how it was a coincidence. I think it looks great. Can't wait to see the polished video.

Release the video!!!! You could even link his video as well, people never retain all the information in a video after having watched it only once. A second watch with an equally clear and engaging explanation is better for everyone, and you spread the love to another channel to really show you want to work with people. Sounds like everyone wins in that situation brother! Keep your head up, and keep pushing toward your goals!
Personally, I think you should release the video, because you made it, and it was purely coincidental that you both released it at the same time. I like both videos, and each explains different things in different ways. I think just release it, because it is your work and the intro kinda already explains that you didn't mean to copy him, as you thought about it yourself. What is the difference if you had released it now vs in a year? The content will both be the same, and the people would probably still watch it, you just will not get the negativity about the coincidence. But that's just my opinion :D
Just release it. I don't think one can learn permanently or remember everything in a video. It took me 3 different videos from 3 different channels to remember the word telomere.

Release it. We're subscribed to a channel called 'Jake Roper' so we can hear you talk about stuff. If we wanted to hear some other frootloop explain stuff we'd be subbed to him. Vsauce3 is where we go to hear jake explain fiction and science stuff. People will watch it.

I don't tend to comment on videos and this isn't advice as more of a statement, but thanks to you releasing the video, I found this channel. I couldn't tell if you really had cancer since you always seem so upbeat and inspirational in all the videos you make. I thought there must be something up if you touched upon it but didn't seem to conclude it for us mainly Vsauce viewers.
Just know you have many more fans that support your work than naysayers and even if someone may have released a similar video, it's the differentiation and your personal spin and style that keeps us interested.

I would say to release it, if for no other reason then that you were already working on it and it's not your fault that he made his video (nor is it his fault) but also that a lot of your subs may not have seen it, although I may suggest to cut the bed part and opt for a different outro as it's not vital and really does draw out the similarities between the two

The way you see and say things is great and this is the main reason why I follow you in Vsauce3, I don't really care if someone else has made a different video or a very similar video because even If both videos have similarities each one have a different style.
