I use this together with super symmetry. Playing with a pick on a Pbass actually creates a great "high gain" -ish sound for metal. In the mix, it sounds properly "in your face" and its not overrun by guitars, perfect.
Innnnteresting. I’ve used a tech 21 bass vt for years for exactly this purpose. It changes the character of the fuzz, like adding another channel to my sound.
I've recently found used Harmonic Booster in mint condition for a fair price and wanted to partly satisfy my curiosity about DG products, so it seemed like a fair starter. I've tried putting it as the first unit in the signal chain, and after the two stacked overdrives (Battalion+MXR M80). Putting it AFTER the overdrive suits my sound taste much, much better - Its 'character' knob works great (and noticeably better) when the unit is put after the already overdriven signal - it seems to me that it blends in/out that 'Darkglass sound engine' which adds a lot of brightness/crispness and attack to the sound, even when all the EQ knobs on it are set completely flat because its EQ works at the same boost/cut levels, no matter at which position the 'character' is set. Cheers!
looks and sounds so cool.. i just saw it used for 70 dollars in my city, and i have a question. I'm a guitar player, and im looking for kind of eq. I now understand that i won't find a full parametric one for my budget, so i sticked with looking for para mids. So, the question is - will it work for guitar as just an eq and level boost for shaping my amp and dirt sounds, or it will add too much for-bass character and so shape it uncontrollable?
You don’t need to do that with an amp in a room. The speakers give you natural compression and the room adds reverb. We recorded this as a direct DI signal, which is very dry. That’s why spiced it up a bit
Great review of this pedal! Have been looking at getting this for a while and definitely will along with a Darkglass Microtubes B7K Ultra Keep up the awesome work. Greetings from the UK! Best Wishes Chris
onboard preamps can kinda screw with the tone in a way stompboxes seem to not? my p bass run through an eq and an mxr micro amp (so technically two preamps) still sounds like a vintage output precision, whereas my old ibanez tmb sounded like... a very loud and hot bass without any real character to speak of. It’s all up to you personally, but know that onboard preamps are generally 2 band , whereas stompbox preamps have mid controls in spades
Since you mentioned it in this, have you ever made a video about using a buffer with bass? I've seen some forum stuff about using them over the years, but I've heard a lot of conflicting opinions of where in the chain to put them, or whether they're needed in a bass chain at all.
I have a rather crazy set up bass>radial bassbone> darkglass hyper luminal compressor> darkglass b3k> darkglass harmonic booster> passive di> amp. (I use the bassbone for a clean di then the passive di at end of chain is for dirt and grit so soundman can mix both) is it good is it good idea to put harmonic booster before b3k or just leave it where it is after the b3k?
Anyone use one of these with the Alpha Omega? Just ordered my AO and I'm so stoked! But I'm curious, if this pedal just makes everything so much more full, maybe it would be useful in the already amazing AO...?
I use a electro-harmonix Steel Leather pedal, which is the same thing (and only about $60) with an alpha omega pedal, and a microtubes x7... I don't care for it with the alpha omega, but with the x7 it does round out the distortion a bit more ummm, nicely.. I'm not exactly sure how to put it into words, but if I am going to try id describe it as controlled aggressiveness.. the characteristics of the x7 distortion sounds are a bit nicer with that higher end attack or "snap" a pedal like this offers... at least in my opinion. :)
I actually take back what I just said.. I went and plugged in right now and realized I'm usually playing my bass with all knobs turned on (its an Ernie Ball music man stingray) but if I roll off the treble to the center and use the steel leather and alpha omega, it sounds super tasty. :)
@@MrZombs123 interesting... I may give it a shot then. I wish I could test the sound with both the Steel Leather and the Darkglass just to see I'd there's anymore if a difference between the two, but I'll start with the SL. There was a site set up that rented pedals under the same business model as Gamefly. Wonder if they're still around?
Love the channel, but the vid left me with a question. My style emphasizes harmonics and polyphony, so the harmonics are often ringing in the background My question is simple: What does a harmonic booster do to harmonics? Will it split the harmonics into a separate signal?
think of it more of a glorified "presence" knob that are sometimes on an amplifier... its not like a guitar boost pedal that raises volume.. it is designed to give the bass more "attack" or "snap", some people describe it as clarity to cut through the mix a bit better. :)
I just ordered this pedal just because of your video. I think it is fair if you paid for half. What do you think? Thank you for all the awesome content and production !
@@basstheworldofficial What's that - 3 Belgian krona? (Shows my ignorance!). Don't fall into the 'louder is better trap' I know it's a booster pedal but to get a clearer idea of what the pedal is doing listen to before and after at similar relative volume. Thanks for the video - gonna check this pedal out.
I use an electro-harmonix Steel Leather pedal that's the same thing, and cost about $60... :-) edit: Just as a side note, I'm not trying to steer anyone away from the Darkglass pedal, as we all know they offer amazing quality pedals well worth the money. I own an Alpha-Omega, Microtubes X7, and Microtubes X pedals, and they all kick serious ass. This pedal also offers more flexibility than the steel leather.. Do they even make the steel leather anymore? xD haha.
It's impressive how... I hate effects on bass guitar. I can't change my mind on this... I am maybe a too old school bass player from the past century ! :-)
I think they are worth every penny, I usted to have like 6 different pedals just to have "the sound" and I pretty much only use one (b7k) as my main unit, they are amazing and combined with new strings these pedals are the bomb, but that's my opinion.
That little piece Lars laid down on the F bass was amazing. That dude and Rene are 2 of the best bassists imo. Infinite creativity with those 2

This is the watch Lars and Rene be awesome channel, after all. I ❤️ them both!
thanks a lot, guys! :-D

Great demo! I really like how we hear the on-off tones for each individual section so you get a really clear idea of what the pedal does.
I use this together with super symmetry. Playing with a pick on a Pbass actually creates a great "high gain" -ish sound for metal. In the mix, it sounds properly "in your face" and its not overrun by guitars, perfect.
1:03 that's absolutely beautiful !!

Wow! It's beautiful. Perfect for Soul-R&B 👌🏿
Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
my favorite bassist Lars , you're the best Lars , sounds real good sir
thanks so much, man! :-)
Great demo. Purchased a Harmonic Booster and an Alpha-Omega because of your videos. Now I want that Masterpiece Aged Sandberg California TT4!
Love this review, along with all the others you have done. 1.03 to 1.27 is just gorgeous!! Such a lovely piece of music 😀🎶
Really liked it as a boost to a clean signal but i felt like it made the distortions feel less full than they did without it.
You guys know the character knob is the preamp blend right? when it's all the way counter clockwise it's hardly effecting the signal.
Take my money!
will gladly do. give it! ;)
Does anyone have any idea how this will compare to the B7K without the distortion? It seemed to have more EQ possibilities.
Definitely going to pick one up when it comes out

I run The b7k with no distortion 90% of the time. How would you compare the two?
I hope they would make ultra version with compressor, noise gate, effect loop and cab sim.
I imagine the clean side of pedals like the B7K is substantially similar.
What are those chords@3:33?? Love it!
thank you! it's basically just a lil chord progression idea i came up with lately ... cheers, lars

Dope. Can’t wait.
Do you just directly connect this pedal between your bass and amp or do you have to add something else to achieve the sound at 3:17 ??
There’s a little bit of compression and reverb on that particular track
BassTheWorld.com and how did you add that compression and reverb?
With plugins in post production

Really cool pedal. I feel like it may even make a lesser quality bass have some UMPH
I like the 5 string p bass with the maple fingerboard. What brand is that?

This vs using the b7k clean?

Can you do a demo comparing active bass 9v circuit and passive bass with external preamp like this one? Does it sound better?

How does this compare to the jptr jive pedal?
hi guys, nice demo, but what about this stuff, can you do review this device Trickfish Minnow bass preamp? we have no interesting review on youtube.
How does this compare to the Tech 21 Sansamp Bass Driver DI?
Is it just me or did the od riffs sound awful? it sure boosted them a lot! I would like to see it before tube bass amp
jnbeissi87 sounds like Darkglass to me. Lord of fizzly High mid and treble. If you like it than fine but it is not for me

No, don’t worry about that. It emphasizes them
I wish that you guys would demo it actually boosting! That is, how does it affect other pedals, especially overdrives, fuzzes and distortion pedals?

Why it doesnt have a direct Output!!??
Would have been nice to have one demo finger style, clean, without chords. You know, what most of us do 80% of the time....
So it would be best to have this before or after the B7K?
Try both. Id probably put it before
@@basstheworldofficial Thanks man, yeah it sounds better before.
So you think it’s better to put this pedal before or after a distortion/overdrive pedal?
Definitely before
Do you think a Boss GEB-7 would literally do exactly the same thing???
request, darkglass noise gate please
super intelligent noise gate 😁
damn, did you try this on a fretless?
nope, but there's no reason why it wouldn't work equally well there

Ditto.
Soundgoodizer for Bass
This pedal will be my new secret weapon ;)
It works like a DI box?
Any idea on how much it will cost?
I guess it will be in the B3k range

I'm more interested in that SVT at full cry harmonics.
Just play simple fingerstyle clean demo please

Given the right pedal, you might change your mind.
Not cheap... £170...
$247 cdn for me. Not super expensive but not cheap either.
Can you please play music that's not so beautiful? It's distracting my from actually concentrating on what the pedal does 🤣
next time get a bass player to do your demos instead of a guitar player strumming and using a plectrum
Grow up
only problem with their products are way overpriced for what you get

The great PT Barnum said "there's a sucker born every day"
Nice video but the bass player looks more of a guitar player... Not epic
Looks?
Don't you guys have any real bass players!!!
No
You’re using a pick to the bass... so sad.
why is it sad if it sounds great?
davie504's rules only apply to his channel
Some bassists will use this with a pick so they are showing how it sounds.
@@basstheworldofficial it's just a joke about Dave 504. i like it anyway ;)
