To this day I still say that Eben is my favorite bass player. He's so smart with his fills and movements. He knows when to keep it simple and rock, or when a part needs a little flair. I'm a guitarist but whenever I play bass I immediately notice that everything I do is influenced by his playing.
The bass on this album was hugely inspirational to me as a young bassist. I don't know where he is now, but I owe him a lot honestly. The bassline in Nightingale is still a favorite to play. They fucking crush it on this video too!
Agreed, I feel like once Chris started writing full guitar parts and not just showing the guys the basic structure, STD got this weird signature indie twang with weird chords that started with In reverie and you hear on every record through 9. I miss hardcore STD.
Dave’s leads are so rad. The new saves the day line up might be super talented but they don’t make songs like this. Not even close! Sometimes a great guitarist playing and writing is just so much more fresh than a virtuoso who is more concerned about complexity of what they are writing than how good it sounds on the recording. Less is way more! Dave is a unbelievable guitarist prob my fav from back then!

This is amazing! I remember talking to you after the show about getting this video and I think you gave me your email, which I lost immediately. I would search for this show occasionally on youtube, but had no luck until my brother randomly recognized me in the crowd while watching the video last week! 18 years later and still one of my favorite shows ever. I have the ticket stub and the setlist you see in the beginning of the video. This was a "secret" show and they played under the name "Sweet Fracture". Also, I believe this was the first show (after the Pop Disaster Tour w/ Blink/Green Day) where Chris played rhythm guitar after Ted left. Thanks!
I had a chance to see them on this tour. I was a senior in high school and for some reason I didn't go. Still think about it to this day. This energy is just amazing.
@@crk140 I had seen them earlier that year with Weezer and saw them a few times afterward and general admission venues. It was always a special experience. They are performing Stay What You Are in it's entirety in NJ and CA this year, I'm flying up for the NJ show.
Best live STD video ever! Really shows that mainstream sound, but retains that underground raw feel that was sadly lost as the years went on. SWYA is still up there as a classic in the second wave emo genre!
Oh man! 2002 was when I first saw them! December 2002 in Atlanta! I was 14 and met Chris, I was elated. Thank you so much for posting this, it’s magical!
I hated this music when I was younger because of being so into hardcore and metal. You know you get that tunnel vision and the blinders. What an asshole I was. Through Being Cool is my favorite album for real. But I have all of them even the Bug Sessions. Jersey4Life
looks like a proper hole in the wall... I remember seeing them in philly at the electric factory in 2002 and was turned off.. that venue is just too big. before that , the 2001 shows were all awesome: krome and irving plaza multiple times, maxwells, and the wayne firehouse.
Probably the best std lineup. Dave just kept getting better and better as a guitarist from here. It's just not the same seeing them anymore. Chris done lost his mind.
@@reallyocean Constantly looking for stuff from this era, specifically during the Grandaddy tour. They had two unreleased songs they were playing during that time, one was Zebra. There's literally no footage of these and it's VERY necessary
@@bobbycecere I remember hearing from the lucky few online about Zebra when they had gotten back from shows at around this time. Bye Bye Baby also was written at around that time but Chris has said it didn't fit the album so they saved it for UTB. I'm hoping these might be released on an In Reverie rerelease at some point.
@@reallyocean Yesss you're right - I remember being gassed when hearing Bye Bye baby was on Under the boards. Also you should check out some of the 98 sets for the 2 unreleased songs they played - THOSE are what we need some kind of release for.. (specifically at the '98 Long Island show, and the Fireside Bowl show in '98 as well)
I saw them in NY just a couple months before this - similar set but different lineup. Man, the early 00s were like the Trail of Tears, but for STD members ...

hell yeah, I feel the same way
He really added so much to their sound 🙌
God damn I love what he did in freakish
The REAL Saves The Day
The respective lineups on TBC/SWYA/IR were the definitive ones for this band.
Dave's guitar playing and eben bass dictate this whole era of saves. I know Chris wrote it, but man, they had a certain flavor to add.

@Funkbobble back in 2010 he was playing guitar in Lissy Turellie. I think he works in music production now.
Eben was hands down the best part of STD
Agreed, I feel like once Chris started writing full guitar parts and not just showing the guys the basic structure, STD got this weird signature indie twang with weird chords that started with In reverie and you hear on every record through 9. I miss hardcore STD.
💯
I was at this show. It was a month after my 18th birthday. I had just graduated from high school. It was cool
Lucky man
What a memory dude that's awesome
Dave is SHREDDING.
The bassist is killing it…. With fingers!!

dream lineup. saw this tour at the Worcester palladium. would kill for a time machine. just to be there again
Same
You and me both brother
I was there! Iconic! Sweet melancholy, takes me back
this is the best Saves the day show on the tube for sure, some one please prove me wrong haha.
I agree, I saw them live right after this, pure gold man
I was at this show. Such a fun lineup. Dean Ween was the opening act
Eben doesn't get enough credit as a bass player
He is honestly up there with some of the bass greats, for me.
Agreed
Incredible..., and doesn't miss a single note live. Underrated is an understatement!
Definitely
Amazing
Holy setlist and lineup. This is Saves the Day.
Best saves the day video I've seen. That drummer is killer. What I'd pay to see this lineup again.

Eben badass bass player, rad! Kickass punches and groovie
what an epic setlist. still had the ticket stub from anaheim hob 2002 show
Definitely one of the best Saves The Day sets I've seen, imagine being at this show...
I saw them in 2002 but not this show
