    I am a zoophilist from Uganda, and I can assure you, You did the right thing to try and save it. In Uganda, there is a clan that honors the pangolin as their totem and would do anything to save their heritage. The system is broken in Congo that such beautiful animals have to suffer the wrath of man, Our Ugandan government supports and encourages people to save nature and will prosecute you in case you violate it. You deserve a medal AKA the Nalubale medal.
    You did what you could but the damage was done already. However thank you, I welcome you to Uganda and see the vast nature of Uganda. My love to spikey at at least he got the chance to try and live to another day,

    I have rescued lots of dying wild animals. The first things you do when finding an emergency case is get it into a warm, DRY, dark environment, like a box with a blanket or towel.
    I think you accidently chilled it by putting water directly onto it. Chilling causes the animal to go further into shock and can kill it right then and there. Apparently pangolins already have a low body temp, around 89-93f.
    *In cases where there are vets or rescues nearby, take it directly to them, do not attempt the instructions below.*
    Now, with a case this severe and how obviously severely dehydrated it was, you'd want to start subcutaneous fluids immediately, meaning under the skin. Do Not attempt intravenous (I.V.) fluids if you have not been taught.
    Subcutaneous fluids (sub Q) are STERILE fluids such as saline injected directly beneath the skin, normally at the shoulders of animals, that gets absorbed much much faster than orally. DO NOT try this with tap water, you will kill the animal by introduced bacteria. All you do is pull the skin of the shoulders up away from the muscle, put the needle only into that skin, and fill it up until the skin won't hold any more.
    Once those two are done, then you want to move onto getting it energy to survive. The thing that's worked the best in my experience is corn syrup and water injected with a syringe into the mouth. The water helps hydrate, the syrup gives much needed sugars to give the body something to work off of. You can also use unflavored pedialyte if they have it, but corn syrup is much more common. Only give it one or two full syringe or so an hour.
    Lastly, of course you want to find some kind of rescue or vet to take it once it's stable and able to be moved.
    Hope this helps anyone reading.
    You probably won't see this, but it's worth a shot.

      @annamoranova9597 2 года назад +14

    • @toriquill1505
      @toriquill1505 2 года назад +29

      @@annamoranova9597 karo (corn) syrup is found at nearly every cooking store, supermarket, and even gas stations all around the world because it is used in cooking. It's easier to use because you don't need hot water to dissolve it and it's easier on the system.
      No one should EVER even think about attempting to make an intravenous injection without training, as you can and most likely will inject air into the vein, killing anything in seconds. With a little research and lots of caution, most people can safely perform a subcutaneous injection without injury

    • @raul_jocson_
      @raul_jocson_ 2 года назад +39

      Also have some experience with sick animals. Want to add that sub Q injection would have been the way to go with the pangy. After a certain point in dehydration, the organs shut down and thus the stomach can't absorb fluids the way it should. Coconut water straight from a coconut might have been a viable option out there since it has approximately the right isotonic balance with some sugars and is usually sterile. That said, sometimes animals are just too far gone, and they're only alive due to stress induced adrenaline. Once you get them comfortable, the body just shuts down completely. There's something to be said about giving them a quiet, comfortable death though.

    • @FarmerFpv
      @FarmerFpv 2 года назад +28

      Not a Pangolin, you want to give them a warm bath with salt and sugar water. If you have no way to give them an IM you can inject it into their rear end "anus" as it will go straight into the bloodstream as it's how they stay hydrated. it's how we did it in the Philipines. They are hardy creatures but have weak kidneys. They can be like puppy dogs but really docile which is why they are so easily handled and poached. Such a sweet creature.

    • @FarmerFpv
      @FarmerFpv 2 года назад +26

      @@raul_jocson_ Sub Q is not best for pangolins. The anus is the best way for pangolin to absorb into the bloodstream right away. A mixer of salt and sugar could have helped the pangolin. Most of the time a warm bath with salt and sugar helps too. It's how we helped bagged pangolins in the Philippines. The survival rate is not very good once dehydrated. They have very weak kidneys compared to most other animals. Same with anteater's very weak kidneys.

      @Shannon L lmao imagine seeing a video of a guy going through a market of healthily breeding and even thriving animals that have lived and adapted alongside these people, and seeing the maker of the video try to rescue a pangolin, a truly endangered species, and truly care and try to save it despite its obviously incredibly dire circumstances, then thinking back to the (once again, well breeding and perfectly fine) animals being sold dead in shops and complaining about it because he didn't... what? Try to save every animal he came across? Like, wtf would he have to do in that circumstance to get you to approve of his actions? These people would certainly die of starvation if they didn't hunt, kill and eat those animals, and put on the attitude of a person sure of their actions, assuring the quality of the product and all the other primal marketing tactics.
      As he said at the end of the video, these things aren't as black and white, good and bad as they may seem. Sure, you can say that hunting and eating those animals is cruelty, but what's the alternative? They don't even have the luxury of assured food at all, and most have gone their fair share of nights without eating, because there simply isn't an alternative, and going vegan sure as hell ain't it; fun fact, mass produced crops are one of the most horrible things that have happened to this planet.
      And with the "buying puppies from pet stores is just encouraging the market to produce more" thing, do you really think your actions have literally any influence on what happens? Your entire country would have to agree as a whole that that action should be changed, and even then, people with the most power could simply say that it doesn't matter. Buying a puppy from a store, even with an incredibly large group buying out all the puppies of dozens of stores at once, will have zero effect on anything outside of those stores, or even anything else besides that dog in that store and they money you paid for it.
      Finally, stop going to the internet to get mad, it's unhealthy. If you don't think you are, then when was the last time you truly felt happy on the internet? I don't mean a momentary laugh and you just go about your day, I mean, for a long period of time, you truly felt unchangingly happy about your circumstances? when was the last time you got into an argument online, besides this one? Do you think other people outside of the ones you know can relate, in a completely unbiased manner?

    • @madmikeblvd
      @madmikeblvd 2 года назад +32

      @Shannon L you forgot to read the room. Being a Vegan doesn't give you any education to stand on to call anyone stupid, if anything empirical evidence would argue the contrary. Veganism is not a degree or some form of superiority, it is literally NOTHING but a personal choice regarding individual consumption. It's truly heartbreaking and sad you couldn't separate your personal failures as a person from your response about another human beings actions toward compassion.

    I was surprised (being a biologist), and knowing the animal was dehydrated, that you did not think about seeing if the pharmacy or a local doctor had some sort of electrolyte powder or drink or IV. That is always one of the first things they do for people or animals when they are weak and dehydrated, is to give them electrolytes. I have no idea if they sell any type of Gatorade there, but it would have worked. Also, my guess is that treating dehydration is one of the common things doctors there do for people who are sick whether it is from a virus, infection, or illness. Anyway, I realize you tried, and that is all that anyone can do. Also, of course you had to buy the pangolin and try to save the poor animal. Because, even if you did not buy the pangolin, that was not going to contribute to stopping them from eating them or selling them for food. You did the right thing Mike.

    This series on the Congo, has been the greatest watch since game of thrones, i have been so deeply interested in these video's, Video's like these are the reason i inspire to be a philanthropist, i was deeply upset at the condition of pangolin and to know the pain he had suffered in his final weeks, however i also understand that this is the cycle of life and we cannot simply judge the actions that were taken against the pangolin, because this is true survival and it's sad to see that the majority of the world cannot choose to be vegan or eat a certain way, because while rich people sit upon their yachts of wealth, the majority of the world struggles to eat a meal a day.
    I fully support your decision to save that pangolin because i saw the look in Spikes eyes when you nursed him, i saw he finally felt peace and although he had passed away, i believe thats because his natural instinct of alertness and fear had gone and now he was finally at peace to sleep. I learn so much from your channel. Amazing video. Always fantastic content and filming. I appreciate the insight you provide into ways of life that I will most likely never get to see for myself.

    Dude dont stress yourself over being compassionate. You're a human being and sympathy is a feat, not a failure. A life is a life.

    Thank you for trying. Such unique creatures, so hard to keep in captivity and so pointlessly hunted... Hunger I can kind of understand, but all that "medicine" ... it's no better than eating hair or fingernails!
    Sometimes an animal is just too "far gone", there's nothing left to do.

    I’m glad you had Spike at his last moments in life. He died in peace with hope in his heart. You’re a wonderful human:)

    Amazing content, I would’ve done the same for spike. You did what you felt was right, it’s sad they’re hunted but it’s life there.

      Why are you defending poaching. When something is uncommon or rare no matter what species or what culture you can't do it.

    I would be so grateful to have someone like him as a life partner to do all this with. I do all of this kind of stuff and travel all over the world solo all the time and I love it but to have someone to feel the excitement with you…Would be intense ☀️

    Damn dude, im definitely crying. Im on the path of eating only plants. It rips me apart when I eat meat. No one around me understands why I say no. The pangolin. Good or bad, I hope you were able to express to someone how rare it is. It doesnt seem that way. All animals are rare... I havent been choked up about a notion in a while, Thank you
