guys here's a reminder. just because someone out there has it worse than you doesn't mean your pain isn't valid. remember to be grateful, yes, but not to the point it makes your pain turn into guilt. whatever you feel is valid
It's same for Indian students too... it's just that we don't stay at school at night for studies rather go to coachings or study at home and libraries....
Nah, this isn't the "whoever has it worst" Olympics. If it was, the Korean students would have to shut up because there's a remote village somewhere where there's no schooling at all
No, it's not disliking their children, it's hoping for them to do better than them, even if the child dont want that, communication is usually the key But it's not disliking, careful with the words
It's just social pressure and competition. Those parents do love them. It's just that the parents know the struggle of not having good college education and the burden in the future. While it is true that this is torturous, not doing this is also resulting in a very difficult to manage adult life in the future. The whole system... From education to work and job opportunities led to this
The most scary thing is those time schedules are common. That means most of student in s.korea are doing this not because they chose to, but they have to. Like it's already been taught by society that you have to spend that much time for studying
It's stupid I think. Life's limited and they chose to spend it like this. Those money they desperately got, they can't even enjoy it after they're dead.
But i have seen many kdramas where the student casts are most of the time in school than at home 😂 Even when it was very late at night they would be in school I used to wonder if they have longer nights and shorter days round the year 😆
In India it's like 5'o clock wake up School starts at 7 Ends at 1 Private academy starts at 3-3:30 Ends at 8 Reach home by 9 From 11-12 need to do homework And the day ends at 12-1 am Coming from an average school attending science students 😂😂😂
For me its like Wake up at 6 am One hour of transportation 8 am: reach at school Than school ends at 3:40pm And do homework till 8:00pm And study till 1am😢
And also the suicide rates. The brain would've been altered so much as to be more susceptible to stress and negative thoughts. The mental has become so weak.

Yes because we have a rigid education system Even in india , high schoolers have to study this much for an entrance exam or just for performing good in year 10 and year 12
This is the same with immigrant Asians, they raise their children with high standards in hopes of them getting a high paying job, and typically we have to take tuition classes after standard school
As a korean student, I never knew that. I wake up at 7, go to school at 7:30... Go home at 4 pm. Have my life until 7 pm, then go to tuition and come back at 10 pm and I do whatever I want till 1 or 2 am and then I sleep....
Hey, I'm Korean too. I guess people just know the circumstances that the media reported, which always over-exaggerated the situation more than the normal....

I’ve never studied in Korea but I have studied in a country nearby and the fat-shaming (they are completely fine with being underweight, happy even) along with comparing grades are really severe :(
Ikr. In my country, older people would "scold" you for wearing uniform after 4 PM, or 5 at max. You're not recommend to wear the uniform for extracurricular as they're suppossed to be "fun" and "not stressful"
I look at kids in school uniform after 5pm weird.. i always b like they gotta go home and change its gross to be in uniform all day.. now ill change my thoughts incase they have extra curricular activites i dont know about

That’s crazy!! I bet you’ll come out of it so much more educated and ready for a career than the majority of other people. Hang in there! You got this! I did want to ask, what does “go to class for prep” mean? Do you mean like study groups for the next day or something?
I did those 16 hour studying days for a week when I had to prepare 3 exams at the same time. By the end I was so fatigued I literally had no idea where I was and what time it is. Can't imagine doing that for years
as a korean, the average hugon is five. you kinda get used to the extreme schedule after doing that ur whole entire life but ur right, it does impact our mentality.
some people never thought of how hard it is to be a korean student 💀 like some kpop or kdrama fans would always say that they would rather go to a school in korea but they never realize how hard and stressful it is and how it’s completely different from your usual kdramas
As a korean myself (I’m korean-American) , after school program is optional just like tutoring lessons after school. It’s not really required or necessary. They’re just intensifying it coz a lot of student takes it. Again, It is not required, It is optional like your normal tutoring lessons after school. The studying til 2am is up to the student.
In India, for private schools, the schedule goes like this: Get to school by 7:00 School gets over at 2:00 From 3:00 to 10:00- it's just tutoring, extra-curriculam (we are supposed to be masters in music, dance, sports, chess, etc😅) and self study continues till 12:30-1:00 But now I feel I am in better place than the average students in Korea😢
As a Korean this is partly true. First off some students don't wake up at 6:30 anymore. In some regions, the law has forced schools to start later(9:00). This applies to schools in metropolitan area. Also, in many schools we don't have study sessions. If we do, they are mostly optional. (But not completely. Mandatory study sessions still remain in other schools.) And only hard-working students study until 2am. This is optional, and highly up to each student(some study overnight, some don't study at night at all). Most students only do this before midterm and final exams, or when Korean SAT is near.
Okay at least this sounds normal and not too hectic of a life. Good thing some of you do have a social life besides studying all day long because i feel so bad for yall 😭
@@certifiedyoongistan they’re pretty similiar, like you can go to school while in summer or christmas, horrid work hours. 120 hours per week which is like 16 hours of work a day. I guess the rate is higher for students in Korea While the rate is higher for adults in Japan
It’s so crazy to me that this is allowed and normalized. Surely they know that a human being needs more than 4-5 hours of sleep to be able to even comprehend everything they’re studying for all of those hours ? It’s such an inefficient way of studying and living. I honestly find it depressing and extremely strange that South Korea is so advanced yet they have this terrible and unhealthy system
Exactly! this is what I am telling my students. They need to sleep/ take a rest to understand what they're studying. But can't really blame them bc that's the harsh reality of their educational system.
Ikr! They’re human beings not robots. A lot of that studying is straight down the drain if they don’t get enough sleep. Work smart instead of hard! 16 hours a day is fr ridiculous
idols don't really go to an academic school like the normal one. most of them go to an art school/university in which most of the subjects are about art music and performing etc. so idols can also graduate even they only attended like 5days. I alrdy knew that there are times company pay the school so that an idol can graduate.
most idols stop going to school, and the ones that do continue school usually miss most of their classes and only go to school every once in a while. they dont study like these students do

all of this is optional. if you want to go to a nice prestigious university in seoul this is recommended and required. If you're fine with lesser known universities then this isn't required. But usually you don't have a choice, your parents sign you up to tutoring classes because obviously they want you to go to school in Seoul.

one bad thing doesn't mean another thing isn't also bad... well established that past around 40 minutes any additional time on a topic is useless as the human attention span is just not very long (attention span hasn't changed in recorded history so has nothing to do with tiktok and stuff)
As an Indian, 5:00- wake up 5:00-6:45 revision of next class 7:30-1:30 school 1:50-3:00- revise coaching notes 3:30- get ready and go to coaching 4-8 coaching 8-8:30 gets home 8:30-9:30 dinner 9:30-1:30-self study

Ive kinda been through that so i wouldn't mind doing it fr
In India, for private schools, the schedule goes like this:
Get to school by 7:00
School gets over at 2:00
From 3:00 to 10:00- it's just tutoring, extra-curriculam (we are supposed to be masters in music, dance, sports, chess, etc😅) and self study continues till 12:30-1:00
But now I feel I am in better place than the average students in Korea😢
As a Korean this is partly true.
First off some students don't wake up at 6:30 anymore. In some regions, the law has forced schools to start later(9:00). This applies to schools in metropolitan area.
Also, in many schools we don't have study sessions. If we do, they are mostly optional. (But not completely. Mandatory study sessions still remain in other schools.)
And only hard-working students study until 2am. This is optional, and highly up to each student(some study overnight, some don't study at night at all). Most students only do this before midterm and final exams, or when Korean SAT is near.
How do you feel about school starting at 9:00? Is it beneficial to the students?

To remember: not all students do this. The tutoring part is by choice, so is the late night study sessions.
Yes but some parents have high expectations and want their kids to do more studying
but still all of them get home by evening, schooling system in sk is effed up real bad.
@@birdybirb it's like that in most parts of Asia, including in my country, and it's considered normal. Honors are seen as "disappointing", while high honors are regarded as something that you should always have, having no honors is a nice way to get your ass beaten, or maybe just forgotten
I totally agree it depends their parents
But you don’t really have a choice if not going to those tutoring lessons mean you might fall behind your peers
If this is the life of an avarage korean student, then imagine being an idol and student at the same time. I could never🤧
They probably don't have as rigorous study times as they have to be an idol which also takes up a lot of time
The idols mostly attend performing art schools, that’s not as bad as the regular schools
As a Korean elementary schooler, my school schedule is...
Gets up at 6:30 AM
Arrives school at 8:20 AM
9:00 AM ~2:45 PM school lessons.(except Wednesdays all the weekdays ends at 2:40 PM but on Wednesdays it ends at 2:10 PM).
↓
My after school sessions(방과후) starts differently, I have 2 after school sessions(Computer sessions: Learning about computers & coding/programming); the computer session starts at 2:45 PM, the coding session starts at 3:30 PM. I also have peer counseling school club. Which is, it starts at 2:50 PM.
↓
Peer counseling school club is on every Tuesday.
Computer after school session is on every Thursday.
Coding after school session is on every Friday.
↓
And then, when I get home I immediately start studying.
How I study is, I study the subjects of what I learned at school every day. Also studies the subjects which there are exams/tests about it. And I mostly have 4 or 5 exams each day of the week or 2 exams combined of the same day.
Which is hard to handle these types of exam periods.
And I wrap up my studying at 9:30 PM or around 10 PM.
Well, this is my daily life🫠
I do wanna be more specific but it'll be too long so I'll end up here.
as an Asian, I could never imagine studying for 16 hours. I stay to school for like 6 hours and at home I study max 4 hours but mostly 2-3 hrs.
Yes same same 😭
Mine is 4-5 hours before the exam, still I get 80%+ 🤷🏾♀️
As an Asian I stay at school for 7 hrs and study at home for like 8 hrs sometimes 9 hrs🙂
7+8=15hrs
7+9=16hrs
So basically I as an asian i can study for 16 hrs- ye having strict parents is hard if my grade didn't met their expectations they'd force me to study 1-12 hrs-, skl
Bruh after attending a 6hr college (welp 11th-12th grade which would be highschool in foreign countries) & another 3hr tuitions I was knocked out. Cannot even begin to imagine studying for like 16hrs

I hear that’s why a lot of Koreans will actually leave the country when they have kids, so the kids don’t have to grow up in that education system 😬
From where? Not many leave, even so those who leave dont always go to countries with study systems that differ from ours. 💀 we have more koreans staying than leaving. If you apply relationships, family, culture, stability, and so on the chances are that it's not a good enough reason to leave. Especially if you studied THAT hard. Im sure some do but I highly doubt its a lot 💀
Compared to the korean migrants that first moved to the US decades ago, i don't think there will be another wave of that. I feel like alot of Koreans prefer to be in Korea. Like alot of my friends are more eager to go back to Korea than visit somewhere else.
Ironically, from the korean students (which is like everyone except 3 other students), they find the American curriculum lazy lol
And the birth rates are getting really low (which is a good way of thinking cause who wants their children to suffer)

Wow, Koreans really work so hard to the point there's no vacant hours. I applause such dedication and determination but also it's good to rest once in a while😭 you can even see that in kpop too. Idols are overworked but they keep giving their best
That's why there's lesser crime committed in Korea than the US - because their youths are too busy studying than making stupid mistakes on the streets. And once they graduate, they're already mature and smart enough to keep themselves from committing stupid crimes.
Indian students have almost same routine just they sleep after 11 pm sessions
You should not applaud abusive education practices. These kids are literally overworked...
As an Asian (I am not telling where I am from), but I had to study like minimum 10-11 hours per day. (Which is ONLY the lowest time for me, some students in my class had to study longer). And it almost costed a lot just like Korean schools a YEAR. I forgot the total though lol
Idk bout you but I never took tutoring classes I managed to Ace in my classes with 3 hours of study at home plus 6 hours at school so I studied for 9 hours but in exams I usually am studying for 16 hours a day sometimes 20 when I really am desperate to get the job done,I think a naturally gifted person i.e the one with higher IQ doesn't need that much of study time but I did hear that S.Koreans have above average IQs in general so I don't understand the need to study 16 hours a day. Disclaimer: I don't even know my IQ but I tend to reach my study goals for the day within 9 hours, never understood why it takes some people 16.
If I ever meet a Korean student then I’m just gonna give them a hug😢
It's really sad. Though I am in India and I have passed high school, I still have to wake up at 5 :00 am and go to school at 6:30. I have to spend time at college till 4:30 pm and again extra classes at the same place for about 7 pm. After that I come home and I have to travel one and a half our to go and come back, and after that it's just self study... But these korean students are having a much more horrible life than me!
