These exams in general are not for selection, rather about elimination, cuz there are limited seats in top schools and hundreds of thousands of student competing for them,
I really hope that girl did well and that she can go on a trip with her friends. It hit deep when she said, "I want to go to the ocean without my backpack".
That really did actually rather hit hard. I do hope they do a follow up video to this one someday. It’s not nice the just be left hanging like this. Hope their result were at least favourable to themselves though.
As a Korean who did the test several decades ago, this system is terribly insane. The world is changing and the entrance exam can no longer be valid, and it must be replaced with any other more productive methods.
Welcome to India Where students lives are defined by Entrance exams. Every year thousands of Indian students attempting suicide for not clearing entarnce exams. The list of few horrible entrance tests: 1. JEE MAINS & ADVANCED ( out of 1.4 million students only 10000 are selected). 2. NEET ( out of 1.5 million students only 15k are selected) Last but not the least world's toughest exam UPSC - out of 1M candidates only 1000 are selected and this exams continue for 1 long years.
@CuriousAboutTheWild when you don't have lot of jobs in a country and on top of that every other person only aspire to become doctors or engineers because that is the only way through which you can gain stability in your life then people start appearing for such exams with cut throat competition and have little hope of becoming successful in their heart.
As a Filipino who has a Japanese friend and a relative living in Japan. Even both of them admitted that this sounds just like the Japanese education system. China, Japan and South Korea might not have good relations with each other but they have something in common that everyone hates: Their education system.
Whole life for a F****** memory based examination & 8 hours!!!!!!!!!Seriously.... True Education isn't defined by a single examination. True education is beyond earning degrees it is more than bookish knowledge.!!!!! Which inculcating moral values, positive thinking, attitude of helping, attitude of giving to society and ethical values these kind of students are only able to bring changes in society. They will become good citizen of country and most important one good human being such students are able to discover something new, out breaking. They will surely become successful in their life. It happens educated in true sense when if they are. You can cope up with the pressure of studies by enjoying the process and finding the reason you have to do it. When we think of any task to be very heavy to carry, it goes to our brains and we feel we carry as if the earth were on us.Being self-aware about what’s effective learning and how it happens, I think, gives you a real edge in making those choices Regards AIIMS Medico...
I personally, have never failed English in my life. As of right now at least. I'm approaching my last year of secondary school, otherwise known as high school if I'm not wrong. The worst I have done was a borderline pass. 53 marks. I have always sucked at my second language, so I guess there's a balance.
I’m a korean student and Suneung is only 3 days left now. I studied very hard-and well-so i applied for the top 3 universities. FYI i want to tell you that korean college-entrance system isn’t that simple. Suneung is one of the TWO main roads. The other is called ‘susi’ (no idea how should i translate). This system requires your highschool grades (3 years), documents about your school activities, cover letters, suneung grades also, and interview. The ‘school activity’ part includes dozens of presentations and papers, club activities, list of books you’ve read, volunteerings, and more. Students participate in these activities just for their college entrance. I’m one of them, i applied for the universities in ‘susi’ so nowadays im studying suneung and preparing for the interviews(which are hard as hell). +In korea, there’s grade 1~9 (like A~F in other countries) and they are relative grades. Ex) only top 4% of students can get grade 1. It’s different with other countries(like you get A if you reach enough score, no matter how other students did). Korean education system is complicated, dreadful, and awkward, but i’m proud that i did it well. Hope this comment help you understand more about korea!
Wait, so you get your final grade based on the top percent rather than how well you did? So it's really about doing better than your friends... I hope you did alright.
The most worrying about this is their parents care more about the result than their child's mental health, and also 12 years of preparing and 8 hours of exams is just brutal. I hope they come up with better ideas ASAP.
I had a friend who lives in Korea and she told me about how stressful the exams there were. She was not wrong. 8 hours, saying that's intense is an understatement.
What I’m wondering is how so many countries are claiming they have the world’s hardest exam. I’ve seen a broadcast about this with China, one with Japan, one with Finland, one with Germany, one with Singapore. 💀
Wtf this is hell, I can never imagine myself doing an eight hour exam and study eat sleep and repeat, respect to these hard-core students and their hard work dedication and efforts.
No I have absolutely no respect for this kind of action. Not to say I don’t respect these students as people (and it’s certainly not their fault for the precarious situation they’re in) but I have 0 respect for such an unhealthy life. This type of endurance need not to be praised (it shouldn’t be condemned, but it also shouldn’t be perpetuated)
Finally! Someone understands how it's harmful and wrong. People are not robots, and enforcing to study so hard just leads to burn out. As the result you are not interested in your life anymore.
It sucks how sometimes kids don’t have time to be kids because they have to worry about hard exams like this. Life is a bit easier when young, I wish there was time for them to enjoy it more. I hope things change soon, but for now, I really hope they all did great because they deserve it!
It’s a shame federal testing such as this is a horrible way to determine an individuals capacity and capabilities. Good work to these kids an 8hour exam sounds absolutely challenging and I wish them all well!
I feel like they are treated as inhuman, just computers memorizing information for a test that won't even be used after except specific areas in uni. Good to hear they're well.
@@sebastianguerre6868 that's sort of demoralizing everyone else. Maybe a cure isn't as complex as it seems, nonetheless there are many issues, no offense to anyone, that take higher priorities than a cancer cure. Oh like I don't know, world poverty, hunger? @@OpiumBride sshhh.... dont break his bubble. this is his self-justification for his sub-900 sat score. but fr tho, in my experience, these types of standardized gruelling exams, albeit rough and traumatizing, are a rather accurate method to gauge a student's self-organization, work ethic, determination, and to some degree, intelligence. these are all the attributes people need to have in order to succeed at higher education and life, really.
I used to watch this video because it would make me feel less alone while I was studying for PAES (College admission test in my country, Chile) seeing all these kids stress about their test and getting into college, felt like I could relate so much. Yesterday I found out I have enough points score to get into the college i wanted. I hope they did too.
Here in Brazil we have a similar test called "ENEM", we do it to try a scholarship in public and private colleges across the country. Is it true that in Chile, education is private?
I am from India, and it's pretty brutal over here too. There's something terribly wrong with the education system in our Asian countries. Here in India, our parents want us to either become engineers or doctors. The exam for engineering is called JEE and for medical college, it's called NEET. Some kids (including me) start preparing for these exams from 5th grade by enrolling in 'coaching classes' ! How is a 5th grade kid even supposed to know what they want to become in future?! I was forced by my parents to join the engineering coaching class in 2013. From 2013 to 2018, I endured an extremely brutal schedule. Wake up at 6am, do your school homework and revision, go to school from 10am to 4pm, come back home and rush to coaching class and stay there from 5pm to 9pm, and come home and finish homework and worksheets before sleeping at 1 or 2am. I feel like I didn't even get to enjoy my childhood because I was forced into this web of marks and ranks and entrance exams when I was only 9 years old. In 2019, I told my parents I don't want to do engineering because I'm terrible at maths, so I had only one option- medical. Now I'm still in coaching, preparing for the National medical school test which is in May next year. Do you guys know how many students enroll for this exam? 1,600,000 to 1,800,000 kids every year. And almost the same amount of kids for the engineering entrance exam. There are thousands of kids like me, who don't even want to be a doctor or engineer. This system turns us into mindless machines with no critical thinking skills or life skills needed to survive in this world. I hate it here. Many of my friends have even attempted suicide. I myself have anxiety disorder and used to self harm but now I'm seeing a therapist. The pressure is tremendous. I'm turning 18 next year which is the legal age in India. My parents have threatened me that if I don't succeed in the NEET exam next year, they will marry me off against my wish, because I'm a girl and my education expenses have made me a burden on the family. Please pray for me.
I hope you will gonna do it sister and I got really upset that your parents told you if you won't success in the exam they will gonna marry you like you are nothing :( I hope that both Indian education system and Indian people look to women change soon and even ifade that I'm an atheist I'm gonna pray for you too, Much love from Russia :)
@@sakshi3241 thanks a lot! And yeah, I totally agree that enrolling early in coaching classes has no impact on entrance preparation. I joined them in 5th and couldn't clear NEET while a lot of kids joined them in class 11th and took coaching for only 2 years but still cleared the exam.

We had a foreign exchange student during my senior year in high school from Korea. Her name was Sonni and she was extremely smart. She told me that they went to school twice a day where she was from, day and night school. I took both AP calculus and chemistry with Sonni, who flew through those classes literally making a 100 on everything, received a 5 (highest score) on both AP exams at the end of the courses. She said it was very easy because she started learning chemistry and calculus when she was young, around 5th grade I believe she told me. I don’t know the equivalence of 5th grade in Korea, I would guess elementary. She went back to Korea after our senior year. I’ll never forget her!
@@watermel I took AP classes only for the purpose of raising my GPA. I didn’t care or had any real ambitions of passing the actual AP exam. It didn’t matter to me at that point in my life. I got an A in both AP classes and graduated at the top of my class like I wanted, but I didn’t do so well on the actual AP exams. I got a 1 on the chemistry and like a 3 on the calculus, if I remember correctly. They were both difficult to me. I’ve never been good at test taking, especially when it’s timed.
I had a Korean friend in high school too who moved to Australia with only her brother and mother when she was five (her dad still works in Seoul). She moved here because of less competition. Somehow she was exactly like you said, even not experiencing Korean high school but she was incredibly smart, and teachers were kind of scared of her , they held her back after class and said her work quality is that of a university student. Even though I was her best friend I was quite jealous of her because I had a relaxing childhood education and didn’t like studying. She could do everything, science (chem, bio) math, music (piano), art (amazing drawing digitally and on paper, definitely Korean aesthetic inspired so it was really unique for us), sport and language (I was in her Japanese class and she could just pick it up, maybe because it’s an Asian language). For her high school final grade she got the second highest score in her year (it’s called ATAR in Australia used for university acceptance ) at 99.85 (top 1% of the nation, highest was also a Korean). To top it off her family was well off, she dressed amazingly (Seoul culture shining through), was actually popular with friends, pretty, and was good at video games. We’re not friends anymore but we go to the same university (small city) and apparently she’s doing speech pathology. All this talent and she decides to stay in our crappy small city 😭 I guess that’s her parents decision though
haha, as a turkish person currently preparing for our university exam it's so similar how pur mindset works. it gave me a little culture shock to read the comments talking about how counting down from 100 days is shocking for them. we do that a year prior as well!
It's not an exaggeration even if you say korean students spend 12 years of going to school just because of this test Usually most students start preparing properly a year before but thats not even enough because the amount of stuff we need to study is too much It's even common to see 4th graders studying calculus just to study ahead here The top10% at least starts preparing for this test 3 years before their turn
"There's only 100 days left until the exam" Props to them for their endurance and resilience. The fact that they study for these things so early/ahead of time at such a young age is mind-blowing. Imagine all the stress and pressure they feel. They're out here studying not only 100 days in advance, but years! Knowing me, I'd start studying the night before the exam LMAO💀
Exactly!😂😂 I also would study the night before the exam but half of the studying hours would be cursing so it wouldn't even be called a full night study. Actually i shouldn't even say "would" cos that's what i do in every exam lol We rely too much on cheating buddy😭 I wish i had such will for studying but i can never focus or do things that i don't like so...basically i suck as a student, i barely even survive the exams and i'll enter university this year. *I'm so screwed!!!!!!!*

About my exams, i kinda did well, let's say they went easy on us due to covid situation effect over educational system regular function, students' mental health and other stuff. Once i enter university, my plan is to force myself to study hard, do my best and succed otherwise like i said...i'm screwed!
Always studying the day before , unfortunately depression and OCD cannot make study more , like little by little every weekday but here is definetly not brutal like there
we have the same thing at turkey and really it's so hard, it starts at 8th grade. when you are 13 you have to just study. u gotta forget your friends, hobbies and anything that u love. u gotta just focus on the exam. if you go a bad high school it means that you are not gonna go to abgood university. unfortunatly in our country there's no worth to have an art job. if you want to come good places (bout career) you have to know maths so well. there's no worth for verbal and art lessons. your family just want you to be an engineer, doctor or lawyer. the education system is so annoying. i hate it and i'll.

Thanks BBC bringing the nightmares back! Those endless nights, sleep-deprived days... I am sure my lifespan was cut in half during school time. The middle school schedule was like 8 to 4 followed by private institute until midnight (during exam period, including weekends) then high school was like 7 to 6 followed by mandatory studying in the classroom (called yaja) until 10 PM, followed by private institute until 1 AM, no exceptions on the weekends for 3 years. I literally ate all my meals in school, meaning there were no interactions with family for those three years. How sad! These days I hear kids in elementary school runs 9 to 1 (AM) due to 10+ private institutes they need to attend (+ homework). Insane! I guess one point from a pro perspective is that after graduation, you can literally sit through just about anything (even those hard days at work, no problem). There are too many cons though. Many kids in their 20s question a lot about "Who am I" because for the entire school time, rather than finding out what they want/like to do, they just sit and study, memorizing stuff they won't remember at all... Kinda brutal. Already been proven by stats that it is the most depressing country in that regard (not to mention highest suicide rate). Look at Finland how awesome they do - they make a collaborative learning environment unlike South Korea (i.e. super competitive environment). Need to think about this line: "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together".
Oh boy. That's sad. And during this time, here in France many young people play playstation all night before an exam. I understand why the suicide rate is high. That's not a life.
Keeps teenagers off the streets as more time is invested into themselves by learning new things. Look at most western countries, dangerous to walk the streets at night because of gangs; muggings, junkies, shootings, drugs etc. Have you been to Detriot, Kensington Ave and Skid Row lately?
As a Korean I wasn't happy for this at all when I was a teenager. Not just the hard exam but we have social pressure to go to a good college. It feels like a failure if I don't pass the exam and don't go to the college. But not everybody can do that, and we just have different talents. I understand we should be selective because of high density of populations but we shouldn't take our happiness and stigmatize as a failure or a lazy and foolish person to youth. We have too narrow perspective for being an productive and responsible grown up. I hope we to stop killing youth mentally and socially.
@@thedudeontheinternet bro, actually we have the second largest population in the world , and this is the main problem like we have a particular medical exam NEET, around 1.6 million aspirants give this exam , combined knowledge of class 11th and 12th is required in this, same is in the case of jee mains and advanced this is one of the most toughest engineering exam , CLAT which is for Law around 80000 students give this exam. And the most important one UPSC for civil services. Long story short, we are actually not focusing on our all round development , communication skills, decision making skills are some of the most important things that are required , if you want to join any famous corporate company. Life is fucked up, but there is one thing in which all the Asian students and South Asian students are having an advantage over the Western kids is that we know how to work hard, and we don't procrastinate.
As a Korean student who took this yr’s Suneung(CSAT), it is true that a lot of our future paths are heavily depended on this. It is hard, and I have also gone through tough years. But the most fundamental issue through education is that the quality of life and the range of job choices that one could choose from depends heavily on the level of the university one entered. It is the matter of perception people and the society has, on judging others based on their academic achievements. This not an issue of Korea alone, but an issue shared with other parts of the world.
In Philippines, the university also matters when applying for a job. The Asian countries are specifically expected to get better opportunities if you graduated from prestigious universities.
As a south korean living in england I'm so grateful that I dont have to be studying so much, I think that the amount of studying students are forced to do in korea isnt great
As a Korean student myself who hasn’t taken Suneung(수능) yet, I can definitely say that the test puts a lot of stress on students from an early age. Parents and Teachers always say that you can do whatever you want when you finish Suneung and get into college, but I wish they would try to understand that we’re still kids and there are certain things that we want to do at this age. @@hope7767 saying something is “disproven” means nothing, you mean, a small group of people came up with an opinion. I say that it’s wrong. It’s 100% true that there are two hemispheres of the brain and that people can lean toward one end or the other. Yes the corpus callosum connects both hemispheres but that does not mean everyone has a good balance between their hemispheres, especially with the Greek based education system that trains people to lean on their left hemisphere, corpus callosum or not. Studies even show that left handed people tend to have a more developed corpus callosum and are better at maths and other things due to that. Also it’s widely known that left handed people are more right brained and right handed people tend to be more left brained. @@icedcat4021 they really are though and you should just go study the left and right brain phenomena and how it even correlates with left or right handedness, and you can see how it has been found that left handed people do actually have the traits that are described as right brained and right handed people tend to also have more of the traits that correlate with being left brained. You also speak as someone who is heavily left brained, far too intellectual but lacking true intelligence and intuition. Ok so first of all what do u mean by “ having no life is your opinion “ ? . Anyway as I’m saying here is that skilled people or what u prefer as “ character “ can do the work more efficiently than those who aren’t skilled and unconsciously don’t know what their doing , cuz skilled people and people with passion will more likely gonna live life more easily and get the work done more efficiently and at the same time they have fun with it . And as for the “intelligence “ one can also get the work done efficiently, but it will not last for long cuz in them they have no interest or life cuz they’re too busy to do the work without questioning what they’re doing . I’m Chinese, and I can say my 3 years of middle school life was excruciating. I have tons of homework every single day, and the thing is that you MUST hand it in by tomorrow. I finish my school at 5pm, and I spend the rest of my day doing homework, from 6pm to 10:30pm. I’m not really hard-working so I go to bed earlier than my classmates. My day isn’t easy either. There are multiple tests every single day, small tests, big tests, I don’t even know. Once you set your butt on the chair in the morning, you know you are not gonna leave it for the next 9 hours. Also, we have some really big exams each semester, and each lasts about 8 hours, so that means we write our tests from the morning to the evening, subject after subject. Every time I finish my exams, I feel dizzy and my mind kinda just stops working due to 8 hours of extreme focus. I’m glad I’m in Canada right now, my high school life is much better. As you can see, I even have time to write RUclips comments now. XD EDIT: I didn't go to a private school or something, it was just an ordinary middle school. Those private schools are not for normal people, like me. Finish school at 8pm, go to bed at 2am, and then wake up at 6? No, thank you. I would literally be dead within a week, I still don't know how those kids make it, but it is impressive. Thanks for reading. Good luck on whatever test you have.
Compared to this my 4 hours university semester exams looks like a blessing. Seriously, how can you subject a student to sit, write and remember for 8 hours?! Who invented this system? It's like they're finding the most tolerant human on the planet rather than someone competent to take the job.
As a pre-med in India studying in the school which has the highest conversion rate across the nation, our botany professor once said "more than testing your knowledge and ability, it's a test of your endurance and time managing skills. You all have always been on top of your previous schools, but things won't be the same here. No mock test defines you, only the final exam does."
That's so unfair though, time management and endurance are both very dependent on luck. You can simply NOT have enough time in a day. Or something terrible could happen to you and now all your mental energy is gonna be focused on survival and not enduring something. America is harder though. Imagine how hard it is to get into the Ivy league schools like MIT, Cal-Tech, Hardvard, Standford, Yale, Cornell, etc. Korea is easy compared to that.

Because countries like Canada have good educational system unlike South-East Asia where they basically overfeed students with the most useless shit possible in human knowledge. Even i am struggling, since 7th grade the difficulty was set to near-impossible. And it's funny because 70% of those information you studied will never come helpful in your future. @@CalvinL.Stevens I don't think it's due to the educational system, it's more like, parenting. Asian parents are known to be strict and obviously would teach their children to be better in every way so even when the educational system is shit and unnecessarily hard, you still need to pass solely because of your parents imo and not to forget, get amazing marks aswell. Westerns have less strict parenting and maybe a better educational system but yeah, i think it's because of parenting and less on educational system.
What’s not mentioned in the video is that you get one shot at it per year. Unlike SAT, if you don’t like your score, you gotta repeat a year (not graduate) to attempt the test again. It is quite common to see students stay behind 1, 2, or even 3 years to retake the test
That speaks a lot more about how big of a joke the American education system is rather than the Korean education system being too stressful. Going to university should be HARD. A big reason why so many people in America end up with no job prospects after graduation is because it is too easy to get in and graduation from American universities.

In Brazil, our college entrance exam is probably not as difficult in terms of content compared to that exam in South Korea, but here it is paid, lasts a total of 10 hours and 30 minutes, has 180 questions, and a surprise essay topic to be written. However, considering the history of education in Brazil, budget cuts for education, devaluation of teachers, and an absurd amount of opportunists selling study courses to desperate students, the exam ends up reinforcing social inequality and further alienates those who do not have the privilege of studying for hours on end from the dream of entering college... the worst part is that the colleges here are public, it should NOT be so difficult for students from public schools to pass the exam and enter college.

Speaking as a Korean who has experienced student life both in Korea and England, I must say that this clip does not exaggerate if not underestimate the poor quality of student life in Korea. We especially study hard for about last six years before the exam which is through middle to high school in korea. I for instance studied about 50 hours a week. Now as a grown man, I had forgotten about how harsh it had been for me when I was a student until I watched this video. And I assume it is likewise for every grown ups. It is really bad in Turkey too. I want to share my experience. In the last two years, I studied very hard and I don't know how many times I had a mental breakdown, getting hysteric or sick and only hobby of mine was eating tasty food because it kept me motivated. And I think the worst part is the nightmares. I had them all year and after the exam ,many days I saw the question that I couldn't solve, then, I woke up and cried. It was really hard both physically and mentally. I am so happy that's done. I wish everyone endurance from this nightmare. My advice is eating together or hanging up with the people you love it is so comforting and don't believe it is the end of life,if you put in enough effort, it will be all right and even very short-length training or stretching can reduce your stress so greatly .

I would really like to see research on how this effort translates into their work when they become adults and how much knowledge these students are really absorbing. It would be a shame if they spent more than fifteen hours studying but could absorb just as much in under eight hours. Would be also interesting to know if studying so much is really making a difference in their carreer later on or if it's just helping them become good at exams.

U should compare to Finland they doing really great raising their next generation … in asia almost education do the same like in korea … in my country also too in private school but some professor doing research is it make generation more smarter and superior if doing this things??? Guess what no is just gonna end up as useless generation cause even u smart doing this test u dont how to use it in real life cause it basic on memorizing
Since they're learning multiple subjects for the sole purpose of getting high grades, they usually forget all of it right after the exam. Most of the methods of learning are actually through tricks, metaphors, and hacks already! So there's really not much learning involved, it's more memorization, and after the exam they forget all of it, unless they get into a certain field which might help them remember a few of the subjects. It's a very broken system of unhealthy competition, enthusiastic young people are made to hate science and learning in general through these processes.
Trust me. It gains.. nothing lol. Honestly, I kinda disappointed with my self to not gain experiences through internship and organization (because I just focusing on my study). It will help me much more easier to join many companies and build better CV.

I agree. I live in Korea and am so confused by the people approving this as if it doesn't contribute to teen depression and suicide rates. It's also not a legit showcase of knowledge as knowing things on paper does not apply to being able to apply problem-solving in real life. I think most dont realize learning in korea is rote mesmerization not application. Plus too much hinges on preforming on this test well. And if you don't? Idk... The Korean College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), or simply known as Suneung, is an exam that creates intense competition for better universities and higher educational opportunities, in line with the principles of a meritocratic society. Many students, if they fail to enter the university of their expectations with their Suneung scores, prepare for and take the exam again for up to one or four years. As a Korean, I believe that nowhere in the world is the importance of which university one attends as highly regarded as in this country. This excessive focus on ability and intense competition is a social problem that exacerbates Korea's low birth rate, which is currently the lowest in the world.
Wow, I’m from Canada and simply imagining the years of time spent on school work over in some of these countries is very saddening. I’m in my senior year of high school and the difference between the education systems is very self-evident. I have a philosophy that applies to me, perhaps someone reading this, but school kills any amount of meaning I get in educating myself. I find thrill and passion in educating myself for the sake of educating myself, not because I had to, but because I wanted to. It’s become apparent to me recently just how strong my apathy is towards school, and now I just can’t wait for it to be over. And when I hear some of these people in the east sharing their thoughts on it, I realize I actually don’t even have it that bad, which is slightly concerning. But what’s clear to me is that these education systems are conflicting with our mental health. Anyone in the east who’s tired of the system, or anyone going through hard times maybe, don’t let school push you around, and I know school is essentially forced into priority for a lot of you, but try to like yourself as much as you can, you’re going to be with you for basically your whole life. Don’t let school take pre-eminence. Take care of yourselves, folks, best wishes from 🇨🇦

Hey, another Canadian, wassup. I actually have this « must outclass others » mentality which I really hate, because I just tell myself, « that’s what your employers will want from you. That’s how the world works » But I’ve always been grateful to be born in a country where the system doesn’t think the same way I do. Especially because my self-esteem would get crushed. I’m happy to be part of a system that, for the most part, lets you find your way without having the constant need to rank you among others. Also my family actually encourages me instead of putting more pressure or calling me a burden like in some stories I often see. I love them so much.

An exam being tagged “hardest in the world” is unnecessary… testing people for 8hrs is unnecessary, I repeat it’s all unnecessary. It don’t mean squat! They’ll still quite the field for a chance at a simpler life in future. Life was designed to be easier than we’ve made it to be!
Korean Here. The reason that we Korean accepts this kind of gruelling system is.... mainly that it looks fairer than other means of testing. Other means of testing we had tried were more susceptible to cheating by powerful people and have been raising many scandals, like Korean version of 'Operation Varsity Blues'. It seems we're stuck here as long as we loves fairness.
But this is far from fair from what I can tell: the exam is too long, which will certainly favour those who have slept better/better stress resistance or more endurance. After the second exam, I'm betting most of the students are already knackered.

My biggest respect for Korea's students. It's just surprising how dedicated they are to study, and also how they keep motivated. As a student I know how does it feel to have the pressure on, thinking that if you fail, you're a failure.. It's very hard. I am in fifth grade and my classmates and I are already in a bad emotional state. Parents here only look at your exam grades, they don't have eyes for anything else. Many of us have entered in depression due to the pressure we have on, imagine when it becomes harder... But even with all that pressure on, you have to learn to find a balance between studying and your life, you can't let your whole childhood be based on studying, so you organize your time, to have time for friends, for yourself and for hobbies, even if it's hard, it's important for your mental health. Best of luck for your exams
Well its not like they have a choice lol, that's the benefit of living in the United States, these exams are so hard because it dictates where these students will go in life as adults, un like the SAT which is relatively easy, for example I scored a 1600 SAT, I'm a net admin who went to NYU, my co worker got a 1250 went to community college and is my senior and he's only a year older (I'm 22). This however is not possible in Korea.

I was such a care free spirit up until college, and it’s scary that for these kids this one exam makes a difference between succeeding in their adult life or not. At least personally I was able to brush off my past mistakes and still have a good shot at building a great future. This is plain cruel and I hope one day things can be different.

School life in China is perhaps even tougher.I am a Chinese and I have just gone through three traumatic years of high school. There was no such thing as weekend when you need to stay in school from Sunday 7p.m. to Saturday 6p.m. Cell phones were strictly banned in school, we would turn in our phones the moment we walked into the classroom on Sunday nights and got them back when we were ready to go home on Saturday afternoons. Those relentless days started at 6:20 a.m. and ended at 10:30p.m. when we crawled into our one-meter-wide wobbly bunk beds in the tiny dorm of 8. But most of us would turn on a nightlight and continue to study till midnight even though we were forbidden to stay up late. We had a minimum of 5 tests a week, each lasted for at least 1.5 hours. I can still vividly remember the sensation of burning in the winter when I was trying to figure out as much as I could in the 2-hour math tests. Horrible memories.
@@ernestgrantoza6096 I am a college student now,and things are just a lot easier. My high school is one of the best, so most of us worked hard and ended up quite well. But I don’t think this kind of pattern would be the best for everyone. It’s harsh but we didn’t have a choice.
Dormitory schools in Korea are similar to those in China. Dormitory-type schools naturally confiscate cell phones. This applies equally to general schools, not dormitory-type schools, until 10 p.m. After all classes are over by 16:30, I study the rest of the school until 22:00. Certain subjects take tests every day (English), and you have to do the assignments given by the teacher of each subject every day. Reports, presentations, etc. should also be prepared. On the day of the report and presentation, when I finish this, I only have two hours left to study. After school at 22:00, I go to the academy by 00:00. Or I go to the study space and study the rest. When I got home, it was 1 a.m., and I woke up at 6:30 a.m. to go to school. This is my experience, but it is the life of a general high school student.Dormitory school comes home on Friday, and they go to the academy on Saturday and Sunday to study. In the case of high school students preparing for college, it is often dawn when they finish their studies on weekends. I became a college student now and became relaxed. I hope both students from both countries will cheer up.
Even as a 14yo Im already feeling so overwhelmed by these tests and results. My health was being very bad during tests. I couldn't get proper sleep and could barely have any time for myself. If online classes weren't a thing I would've gotten a hard time as soon as I turned 13. These people have no heart. Let children enjoy their young time because of you their lives are becoming difficult day by day. They know this happy time is only temporary yet they're trying to cut out more of their happy time than it already is. I cry a lot thinking about my childhood I miss it so much. I wouldn't have to work like a computer and I could go out to play with my friends. It's sad I wouldn't experience the same thing anymore. If I was in charge of education for the world I would make it very easy so they can also live a happy life. I get my results in June please pray that I pass

@CuriousAboutTheWild when you don't have lot of jobs in a country and on top of that every other person only aspire to become doctors or engineers because that is the only way through which you can gain stability in your life then people start appearing for such exams with cut throat competition and have little hope of becoming successful in their heart.

It is the matter of perception people and the society has, on judging others based on their academic achievements. This not an issue of Korea alone, but an issue shared with other parts of the world.
Props to you! How do you manage to stay focused while studying so much?
Is Suneung the same as CSAT?

Making people totally left brained with no right brain creativity makes it really easy to keep them as submissive slaves to their government. Right brain is intuition, art, creativity etc and without that open minded emotional side of the brain people just become robots.
@@louisehogan8192 that simply isnt true. things as complex as creativity and logic arent confined to just one hemisphere.
You also speak as someone who is heavily left brained, far too intellectual but lacking true intelligence and intuition. She literally has everything colleges want. She's also an incredible writer. If that's not enough, what more is there? Se struggled so much and literally her entire self-worth is based on grades. The difference between korea and America's education system is that korea doesn't care about useless shit like extra curriculars and community service. American colleges look for "character" and korean colleges look for effort and intelligence
And here’s the thing life is sort don’t waste your life on something that doesn’t benefit u both mentally and physically .

I know how challenging it can be, but believe me, the results are going to be good and next year you will be great and relaxed.
My advice is eating together or hanging up with the people you love it is so comforting and don't believe it is the end of life,if you put in enough effort, it will be all right and even very short-length training or stretching can reduce your stress so greatly .
Thanks for sharing your experience bro, I am in my final year of A level in england and my geography teachers are almost quite literally sabotaging us with the amount of case study work they give us considering how little help we get during class. Proud for you getting through that bro, 99% or more people on this planet don't have anywhere near the work rate some of you lot have. People like you deserve to have jobs that pay you very well, hard work at that extreme deserves to be rewarded heavily.
@@freddie2.095 Thank you very much for your kind words.

@Saurabh Biswal Oh it sounds really hard too. Thanks for informing me about India's education system. I think it is so sad that at such a young age, children have to take such a challenging path that even some adults can't endure but maybe we have to change our perspective in a little bit more positive way, It's helped us be mature and increase our endurance but still there is so many negative things too, so I really hope someday governments can understand us to protect our mental health.

Welcome to India
Where students lives are defined by Entrance exams. Every year thousands of Indian students attempting suicide for not clearing entarnce exams.
The list of few horrible entrance tests:
1. JEE MAINS & ADVANCE- Engineering entrance exam ( out of 1.4 million students only 10000 are selected).
2. NEET- medical entrance exams( out of 1.5 million students only 15k are selected)
Last but not the least world's toughest exam
UPSC - out of 1M candidates only 1000 are selected and this exams continue for 1 long years.
Indian education system is made not to do selection but rejection 😭
Same in Pakistan bro. Medical school test; 1 lakh candidates and only 4000 selected. Once 4000 graduate; there is another exam from training in medical specialities with 900 seats only. These stats are for Punjab, the most populated region of Pakistan
that's not precise (im a jee/neet aspirant)
but lots of labour are needed
Any common entrance exam is extremely hard in india to crack not just these specific ones. The cutoff is ridiculous everywhere
🥺🥺

I would really like to see research on how this effort translates into their work when they become adults and how much knowledge these students are really absorbing. It would be a shame if they spent more than fifteen hours studying but could absorb just as much in under eight hours. Would be also interesting to know if studying so much is really making a difference in their carreer later on or if it's just helping them become good at exams.
U should do the research….
It's more prevalent here in India.

It reminds me of jee. I can relate how when you're preparing for something like this, you can't have fun without feeling anxious. I panicked 100 days before exams and a lot of other kids did too.

I'm so glad my high school wasn't like this. Being an adult now is hard enough. Let kids be kids and enjoy their youth, you won't get that time back.
I hear ya brother no child's only hobby should be school. Gotta get the youth out into nature.
