Day in the Life of a Typical Japanese University Student

  • A day in Japanese college student life in the greater Tokyo area. Follow a Keio University student from morning until evening. This is a day in the life of University student in Japan attending Keio University, one of the top universities in Japan. Japan university student life is much different than the Japanese salaryman life as college students have a bit more freedom to pursue hobbies, especially in their senior year of school in Japan. An average Japanese student in Tokyo may have between 15-23 course hours per week while a Japan University student 4th year Senior will have much less such as 9 hours of course hours per week. Yusuke, 22 year old Policy Management Major at Keio University lives with his parents in a 2 story house which is commuting distance to school via train and bus. Typical Japanese University life outside of class and study, also allows for part-time jobs and also a social life with friends. In fact, many Japanese students take on part-time jobs and find the time to hang out with friends in groups and join Japanese University Circles. Generally, a typical Japanese student’s class semester grade is based on assignments, presentations, group projects and 1 final exam at the end of the semester. But one interesting aspect about the Japanese university grading system is that many teachers don’t let students know how each category is weighted so students can’t calculate what they need to score on their final exam to earn a specific mark for the class. Watch the video and let me know in the comments how this compares to your University Life in your country.

So Students who go to Keio are pretty much the elite of the elite in Japanese terms (kinda like Harvard). Therefore they also usually get the best jobs available, so there is a good chance that they got the jobs of their choice.

    I'm impressed how university professors in Japan don't tell their students their grading system- maybe because they want their students to work hard and not just aim for what is required?
    Here in our university it is important for us to know the professor/instructor's grading system so we'll know how we'll be graded.

      I was impressed too! At my university (Canada), I hear about a lot of students using each class' grading system to prioritize certain assignments over others (eg. why do an assignment that might be worth 1-2% of your grade and will take you a few days when you could use those few days to study for the quiz that's worth 8%).

      @Christopher._M 4 года назад +38

      @Susuya Juuzou I agree, I regret ever taking their stupid classes! I thought it would benefit me. I eventually found out that all your paying for is for the acknowledgement that you graduated from that college or University. They don't even help you. They tell you what to do and you just turn it in or present it. Then you get your score and done. I almost forgot, you take the test and get a score.
      Its truly not worth what you pay. You pay 20k a year just so they can tell you do this and turn it in a month from now. Its like telling someone, I will teach you how to hunt. Then they tell you, go learn how to make a weapon. Also go learn how to find a good hunting area. Don't forget, go learn how to track animal. Lastly, go learn how to butcher them.
      They tell you what you need to learn but don't actually teach.

      I'm European. Where I go to unversity course books are either not necessary or uploaded to our learning platform. The few books I had to buy occasionally totaled to an average of 25 euro per semester for my study branches. In the cases where reading the textbooks is not required they are still mentioned by the professor and the library has between 3 and 10 copies you can borrow if you decide to read the source material instead of just the lecture slides.

      Not true. At all. It's typical for a Japanese worker or student to focus on their responsibilities 15+ hours a day (at maximum effort). Which is why many Japanese people get drunk every night. Because they need to let loose. And also explains why they have the second highest suicide rate in the world. Many can't handle the pressure. It is an incredibly overworked culture. Which has both positives and negatives.
