    Hey! My name is Hafu Go and I'm a dreamer. For the past year, I made it my life mission to study patterns of success for students. I traveled across the world to interview students from top schools like Harvard, MIT, and Stanford. I was born in China and went to elementary school there. But when I was 9 I moved to Canada. So I wanted to go back to China to experience the high school life. Chinese high school students are top students in the world and this video will reveal why.

    Personally, as an Asian student, this schedule is normal for us, even back then when I was in secondary school (grade 6-9) we spent 9 hours per day at school after that is 2-3 hours extra class and the rest of the day is for homework. The teacher always takes break time, PE, or any other kinds of creative subjects (arts, music) for main subjects (literature, math, English). When you are used to it, it is not that stressful and tiring. But now, when I have gone abroad and currently studying in an international school, I realized that’s too much

      Yes it's true! I've been through it personally. My high school was not as good as the one in the video but it was run in the exact style. It's not scary but actually enjoyable. I enjoyed studying a lot, was very motivated and did fairly well with school at that time. Then I went to a western university and have become the laziest bum ever😞

    • @millicentwood549
      @millicentwood549 4 years ago +196

      From my experience, it's definitely great. But only if you're motivated. You're keeping in step with excellently performing people, so it encourages you to do better. There's a competitive edge to it and it makes you want to be the best version of yourself. But the thing is, once you start burning yourself out, it becomes an actual hellhole. Being surrounded in such an environment can actually discourage you if you so much as lag behind. Sometimes I couldn't help but feel like I didn't deserve to be there because everyone was doing so well and I wasn't. It's almost isolating. If you do go to a school like this, I wish you luck!

      @vexxo7998 Actually schools helps you reach and develop your skills in anything which includes the skills you need for your future aka your dreams.. though it really depends on ppl if they want to study hard like these guys or not.. Don't blame the school, blame the ppl who just want you to be educated pff

      @anneliessefortich4294 Not everyone is academically minded. Some people are better at vocational subjects/careers. This pressure is damaging these kids.

    • @anneliessefortich4294
      @anneliessefortich4294 4 years ago +115

      @MrxxVENUSxx For me as a student I 100% agree with you. However, it really depends on the situation of a student, like for example if their parent/s forced them to attend school and be a smart kid blablabla.. and their teachers wanted him/her to aim a high grade blablabla.. but what im trying to say is to him is that schools don't destroy dreams or whatsoever, instead he should've blamed it on to those who wanted to control his/her future. And of course if you have problems with school and also with family matters you can always call for help from the guidance of your school or from your loved ones such as friends.

    • @trolengravor
      @trolengravor 4 years ago +76

      @anneliessefortich4294 I agree with you in some parts, but I think that it actually depends on a country's educational sistem and social pressure, and since we spend a lot of time in school on our most fragile life stage (youth), it can damage us a lot.

  • @MelekKaratepe09
    @MelekKaratepe09 4 months ago +3

    in 03:54 i look at the board and translate what they’re learning and i just realize that this level of geometry is the basics for the high school students in turkey. I’m studying for the university exam that we called YKS in türkiye and i realize that were studying EXACT same as chinese students. But the exam doesn't seem that difficult in Turkey because studying day and night here is not a must and no one puts pressure on you in this way. This may seem good, but the exam is difficult and it can sometimes be harder to do a discipline at this level with self-control without anyone controlling you.

      I get the temptation of that, when you have the natural ability to handle a course without intense study why study for something you have little use for. However, the school system (at least in America) is built to build discipline more then anything so avoiding doing all the work destroys what little purpose there is in public school these days. It varies per school of course but work hard, even if you don't feel you have to.

      Students in Asia normally don't have the right or ability to express themselves at school (coming from someone who spent their whole childhood in japan and Japanese schools)
      So things like makeup, hair dye , outfit or just uniform but with a little bit of accessories aren't allowed at all and it often makes students miserable (speaking from experience)

    • @ruiyingan849
      @ruiyingan849 4 years ago +48

      @paulinarios3665 it’s due to the competition in China, there’s only around 6 in 10000 that would be able to get into the best two universities in China which he mentioned, and around half of them even going through the final university entrance examination (Gaokao) they will still end up holding a diploma, so every mark really count. There’s around 10 million people taking the Gaokao every single year in China and one mark difference can lead to over 10000 difference in the final position ranking. The school is not to be blamed, is the vigorous competition out there

    • @estrxlatzu
      @estrxlatzu 4 years ago +1

      @محمدنبوي-ج9ب you need to be focused on it
      Make sure everything you need is in the desk
      Listen to music to soft(not hyping one) while copying from text book
      Try to come up with games for studying (for example: each answers you get right you we get extra 1 minute to your break)
      Try to be motivated
      Here some motivating words
      If you study now you will be able to have money to buy your favorite food
      If you study your parents will be proud of you
      Study hard you can do this
      Try to memorize hard words first by playing a game
      If you memorize it in 1 minute you can take a bit from any sweet or chip
      First try to learn long answers cuz when we first start we are super energetic then slowly slowly we become tired when you become tired you want to learn easy answers right?
      So yeah thats why first learn the hard answers then easy ones
      For anyone who is having a exam tomorrow
      Try to dont panic
      Drink water
      Try to memorize hard words
      Do this from learning names
      J- jelly cake (Jupiter)
      S-Samsung(Sun)
      M-Money(Moon)
      Hope you get what i am trying to say
      Hope it helps

    This is what how Asians students do for the rest of their "school life" from primary school to university (maybe after university also). These kind of things not only happened in China but also in Korea, Japan, Vietnam, India, Thailand, etc. If you are taught that "study is for a good future life of your family" since the beginning, this will be how you study at your classes.

      I study in the highest ranked school in my country and I have ADHD, it is very difficult and I have so many mental breakdowns because of stress (I even noticed a few white hairs on my head lol) but I’m passing all of my lessons. In the exams of the last year of high school here it’s possible to get 101% or sometimes ever higher depending on the intelligence of the student but it’s really rare. It’s fine once you have a goal to reach. My goal is to get in the top ranked university in my country. So yes, it’s very tiring but they have goals to reach which is definitely the best motivation.

    I studied like this at high school and it took me 2 gap years after high school to actually know who I am and get on well with the real society. There’s no complaints about it, but at least should give the students knowledge, different perspectives and freedom to make their choices rather than forcing them into schedules, goals planned and expected by the others. It’s the life that people want them to have and immature students just follow like stereotypes, one day they might be shocked and collapsed when finding out what they really want and who they truly are.

      @vickyding3349 Teaching is not the hardest part. Every major teacher will teach more than 2 classes. But there will be a headteacher setting to in charge of a class. He or she has to manage everything. like my school, We have to arrive at the class no late than 6:50 AM, the headteacher always there to see who was late and monitor the class when we do the self-studying. That means he got up early and go back also late. Every week we only have one day off, it's the same for him even that day he doesn't have any class.
