Hey! My name is Hafu Go and I'm a dreamer. For the past year, I made it my life mission to study patterns of success for students. I traveled across the world to interview students from top schools like Harvard, MIT, and Stanford. I was born in China and went to elementary school there. But when I was 9 I moved to Canada. So I wanted to go back to China to experience the high school life. Chinese high school students are top students in the world and this video will reveal why.

As a Chinese student who has completely experienced this kind of high school life, I would like to say that although this learning mode can indeed enable students to obtain high scores in a short period of time, we have given up a lot, such as practical ability, communicative ability, physical fitness level... We are constantly writing homework every day, just for an exam. Now that I am in college, I found that many aspects of my life are very bad. For example, I am not good at communicating with people, and I cannot play various sports and musical instruments. This learning mode wastes my time to learn social knowledge healthily, and I hate it.

Yes it's true! I've been through it personally. My high school was not as good as the one in the video but it was run in the exact style. It's not scary but actually enjoyable. I enjoyed studying a lot, was very motivated and did fairly well with school at that time. Then I went to a western university and have become the laziest bum ever😞

    • @millicentwood549
      @millicentwood549 3 years ago +191

From my experience, it's definitely great. But only if you're motivated. You're keeping in step with excellently performing people, so it encourages you to do better. There's a competitive edge to it and it makes you want to be the best version of yourself. But the thing is, once you start burning yourself out, it becomes an actual hellhole. Being surrounded in such an environment can actually discourage you if you so much as lag behind. Sometimes I couldn't help but feel like I didn't deserve to be there because everyone was doing so well and I wasn't. It's almost isolating. If you do go to a school like this, I wish you luck!

Personally, as an Asian student, this schedule is normal for us, even back then when I was in secondary school (grade 6-9) we spent 9 hours per day at school after that is 2-3 hours extra class and the rest of the day is for homework. The teacher always takes break time, PE, or any other kinds of creative subjects (arts, music) for main subjects (literature, math, English). When you are used to it, it is not that stressful and tiring. But now, when I have gone abroad and currently studying in an international school, I realized that’s too much

I get the temptation of that, when you have the natural ability to handle a course without intense study why study for something you have little use for. However, the school system (at least in America) is built to build discipline more then anything so avoiding doing all the work destroys what little purpose there is in public school these days. 10 years ago, I spent days like those students in this video in the best high school in Hunan province. It's interesting that at that time, I didn't feel too much stress. I would stay up late reading fantasy novels on a smartphone borrowed from my best friend. Sometimes, I skipped evening self-study sessions and sneaked into the school computer lab to play Dota-even on the night before 'Gaokao', the college entrance exam. I eventually got into Tsinghua University, ranking 60th out of some number like 200,000 to 500,000 examinees. But when I look back at those three years after leaving high school, I realize how focused I was during that time-it was an ideal state of productivity that I can hardly sustain now. I'm currently pursuing a PhD in the United States, but I have to admit that my efficiency is probably less than 50% of what it was in high school days. I think the key problem is that during high school, I was not exposed to a lot of entertainment and distractions, so my life was relatively simple, so I had a higher tolerance for boredom and prolonged effort. If someone could maintain the level of focus of an outstanding Chinese high school student for their entire life, they would definitely achieve great success in any field.

The Chinese government has succeeded in destroying the Chinese family. You don't raise your children in China, the government does. You did very well for yourself and if I were in your shoes, I would probably compete just as hard and study 16 hours a day because that is one of the few ways to reach prosperity in China. But that doesn't mean by any means that the government should raise your children instead of you.

I'm Brazilian, I'm 14 years old, and I study at an excellent school, the Colégio Adventista de Taboão da Serra. Man, I know the cultures are completely different, but it's practically impossible not to compare them: I'm feeling like the wildest of animals, living in an anarchy, without any order or law. The discipline of these students shown in the videos is jaw-dropping.

As a Taiwanese who often observes Chinese society, your message seems really ironic.
For example, some people blowing air conditioners on the sofa said to farmers who live in straw huts and have health problems due to heavy labor: "You can contact nature and move your body every day. Although you are tired, you are very happy."
These students spend 16 hours a day. They study for hours, but they may only sleep 4 hours, and are prohibited from using the Internet. Clothing must fully comply with school regulations. Most schools even require girls to have hairstyles above the ears (the teacher may force you to cut off your bangs) ). In fact, a large number of students die suddenly or are left with physical and mental problems every year.
I have seen many Chinese messages, all of which mentioned that a student died on campus. He may have jumped from a building or failed to take a rest, but the school and senior officials suppressed the news. Even students from the same school, almost no one knew who died. Their death is like a stone thrown into the sea, without even a ripple.
A superficial understanding creates a ridiculous longing, I can only say this.

The fact that they can spend the entire day studying, and "most" go back to their dorms at the end of the day to study a little more, really shows you that their study's are no longer a normal activity that they either enjoy doing or hate doing. It has become something so conditioned into them, that it is simply something they do autonomously with little to no resistance. Studying is reflexive and no longer becomes about whether they feel like doing it or not.

The girl has such a positive attitude. It's inspiring to see young people working so hard yet taking it all in stride. Very impressive.

Honestly, based on the few comments I read under the video; I can say that I actually don't really support the fact that the students' whole future may depend on them getting accepted into one of these 2 big universities, but I definitely get motivated to raise my marks currently from 88.79% as a sophomore student who's in a strict high school right now. After all success is not accidental.

This is identical to the Vietnamese students. However, in Vietnam, entering a good high school is even harder than entering a good university. So the high school entrance exam is literally the hardest exam in your whole students' life in Vietnam, it is so freaking competitive.

@@vickyding3349 Teaching is not the hardest part. Every major teacher will teach more than 2 classes. But there will be a headteacher setting to in charge of a class. He or she has to manage everything. like my school, We have to arrive at the class no late than 6:50 AM, the headteacher always there to see who was late and monitor the class when we do the self-studying. That means he got up early and go back also late. Every week we only have one day off, it's the same for him even that day he doesn't have any class.

I was a teacher in a Chinese public school, it was so stressful...7 am - 7pm 12-hour work per day and I have to deal with different kinds of parents(they care so much about their children's study and they always call me after my normal work time ). I quit after one year...and don't want to be a teacher in China anymore...at least not in public schools.
