LYRICS:
I don’t know what went wrong
I ain’t known you that long to begin with
leave the rocks in the road, stay away from the river Virginia
there’s not much you can do ‘cept wait on a train
when the road gullies out in a Biblical rain
and that’s how it’s been ever since I can remember
I’m not too keen of mind
I don’t pick up on signs like I ought to
so I won’t sweat the cost of the coffee
or the wine that I bought you
with your emptied out nest, your chicks have all flew
now there’s nobody left to take care of but you
and you don’t know how to just be
no one ever taught you
I can’t find much to say as you play with that loose strand of hair
if you had you a tail you’d be twitching it
and I’ve got to get over the scare and tell you no
(chorus)
and tell you no
and tell you no
and tell you no
never saw such a cold day in June did you ever Virginia?
in our young days the old people called it blackberry winter
as the mail plane goes out at a slow rate of climb
this cold rain don’t help with your low state of mind
hanging down like the fog on the ridge
you can’t tell what’s in it
and you stare me down hard and you ask me why I even care
it’s not that I’m any Sir Galahad
there just needs to be somebody there to tell you no
(chorus)
your bags are all packed, you’re not coming back that’s for certain
and the landlady won’t like the stains on the rugs and the curtains
that’s just wear and tear such as happens in life
but folks around here live to gossip and gripe
so I won’t tell a soul
what they’ll never know will never hurt ‘em
and I found the letter you left at the foot of the stairs
I hear the horn blow, the train’s pulling out
I hope you find somebody there to tell you no
to tell you no . . .
leave the rocks in the road
stay away from the river Virginia

"With your emptied-out nest/your chicks have all flew/there's nobody left to take care of but you/and you don't know how to just be/no one ever taught you"
Damn
What a Storyteller Kudos from Norway
Best album of 2021.
If you get the chance see James in concert. He’s the real deal! REK, Townes and a little Dylan all in one.
Son graduated college May 1st .. daughter graduates high school tonight and is bound for college. The line .. "with your emptied out nest .. your chicks have all flew .. there's nobody left to take care of but you" .. is resonatin' rather strongly in my soul tonight. Not the first time James McMurtry's lyrics have resonated in my soul .. but .. tonight .. his words really pack a punch
Get a dog or two. 😀
That, is a damned good song.
Yessir it is
I know this is just a story, but it reminds me of an affair I had, and at the time that person was the only person in my life who had cared about me at all. He never knew how much I felt like I didn't want to live, but he always seemed to contact to me when I was considering doing it. He really made an impact❤️
Killer track!
Great song & tune .
I'm not too keen of mind
I don't pick up on signs like I ought to
jmc. no one better
i just wanted to say that after hearing James McMurtry play this song live, i came to the conclusion that he is without any doubt in my mind - the best musical artist alive. he’s better than Dylan, and that’s like saying he’s better than the very best that ever lived….and it’s true. from looking at his astrology i can see that he is also, without a doubt, the presently enthroned Watcher of the South (Formalhault). in my understanding, James is an Anti-Hero, and a spit-fighting Warrior King in the tribe of Mother Mary. maybe he’s the Red, and Dylan is the Blue, but from where i am standing presently, the Red is much more helpful to me in getting through this experience of the Boots on the Ground of Becoming. (ps: i am rather sure that i have divined the precise ascendant with the help of my Angels). bravo! and thank you, James McMurtry. and thanks be for your Mama, who, apparently, raised you right…you aren’t exactly like those other Cowboys…there’s something different. ✨🪄💙🐟🩵✨
