"Drop the kids off at the mall." When did he write this, 1990? And sorry but while we may not see the particulars of war the cable news networks make money from showing us war on TV. I'm not saying McMurtry isn't a good songwriter but this song just sounds like dated virtue signaling to me.

It's about Obama's wars as much as virtue signaling of the left wing to appear woke to right wingers, so from 2008-2013. Also the tone is anti-Bush, but it's more the party doesn't matter. The mall line is about the dated thinking of Gen X parents.
The best line is the black suburban running you down like a dog. That's a reference to Iraq or Syria or Venezuela or Afghanistan or Libya or Sudan or Yemen or Liberia or Mexico. Now it's Ukraine, Taiwan, Colombia, Peru, and Brazil too.
