I'm so glad you did this review. I wanted this truck for a year until I saw the price. Wisely, I chose a ZR2 Colorado.
I'd pick the zr2 too
same only I went with a 24 Canyon AT4 like so many people my eyes were set on the tacoma until that price dropped but I am happy with my choice Colorados and Canyons are great trucks with nice features
Well.....I just bought the Canyon At4x Aev truck for 68k...I know I'm in the minority of idiots spending that much for a 4 banger amd midsize truck but I'll die on the hill with how badass offroad and capable these trucks are. It's a NICHE category for a certain buyer. Preciate the content.
Love the at4x aev!
It's a beast bud.....Trail hunter was a damn good looking truck too.
Exactly! Everyone commenting making it seem like these top spec offroad trims are all that's being offered. 😂. It would be a tough by between this, the AEV4X and the ranger raptor tbh
Meh. Let the dinosaurs bitch about the turbo4 all they want. I have an AT4 and to me the 2.7L is much more fun to drive than the 5.3L in my previous Silverado. Most of the guys hating on these engines know absolutely nothing about them and never driven one.
Hey, if you're spending that kind of money, you made a great choice. I think you get a lot more for your money with that over this Yota.
A Tacoma costing over 60k is the most insane thing happened in the auto industry ever.
agree
I enjoy and appreciate your content. I like seeing the channel grow as it is well deserved. Thanks!
Thank you. Greatly appreciated
70k for a 4 cylinder no thanks I’ll buy a frontier
So you want the inferior product ? Less payload less towing less power less tech and slower overall truck ?
@9663mu - 80% of the capability, proven platform, easier powertrain to work on for 50% of the price.. absolutely!!
😂😂
For the price the build quality is very piss poor!
The frontier will die at 100k miles. I know a couple people with frontiers tranny failing they are that bad.
At 2:09 you can see a bolt on the frame mounted rock rails is not screwed all the way in.
Made in Mexico garbage and they're way overpriced.....
Absolute joke of a company lately. Made in Mexico, you're definitely not getting what they're charging for it.
You guys are looking this the wrong way. It’s a Toyota and consequently it only needs one good bolt to keep it installed. All the other bolts are over engineered backups. 😃
Was just about to comment on that. Not confidence inspiring at all. Get a Ranger Raptor, made in Michigan for $10K less and it will run circles around this and the TRD pro.
lol they shoulda seen that during PDI, great techs at the dealership I guess.
Would much rather have a Ranger Raptor but I also refuse to pay 60k for a midsize truck.
I work for Toyota..have for the last 13 years. I have yet to see a Trailhunter in person, but I can tell you that every single 2024 Tacoma's glovebox rattles and moves around like that...its embarrassing that Toyota let this slide. But...their engineering, design and manufacturing have gone way down hill with this new product line. To cap it all off...built in Mexico. First it was the Tundra..now the Tacoma and Land Cruiser..and soon to be 4Runner. Makes me happy everyday that I bought a 2024 TRD PRO 4Runner...last of the dinosaurs and last of the great Toyotas. The Glovebox along with those floor mats, (as simple as they both are), shows exactly how far Toyota has fallen.
@joetaravella13 agree on all points. And appreciate seeing someone that works for toyota stepping outside the box and looking with an unbiased eye. Thank you for commenting
Beautiful truck. I had two 3rd gens both new at 35ish K. These new priced are insane. I now have a 2020 Tundra and could never go back to a mid-size truck.
Love the Tundras
70K+ dollars for a four cylinder truck with fit and finish issues, no room in the back seat, reports of transmission overheating, reports of turbos overheating. Forget about it I'll keep my 2021 4runner. It is a good looking truck, too bad that it's not worth anywhere near 70K dollars.
Agree
I’m trying to get the funds to get a 2024 4Runner TRD OR Premium. Should have never sold my 2022 Lunar Rock T4R TRD OR-P w/MTM (360° camera) & KDSS.
Careful dont look at it too hard. The front diff or transmission might break.
That glove box would rattle on the highway. The armrest would rattle on the highway. The transmission would overheat.
Nice to hear Toyota figured out how to get cold AC! Nice looking truck!
Price is a no go but it looks incredible
Is sexy
So glad you mentioned the overspray on the rocker panels. I literally lost my mind when I saw it on my tundra, now I’m happy to know it wasn’t a mistake!
Yep so many people think it's over spray. It's on purpose and a good thing. And toyota really cakes it on! It's a great rock chip preventer.
@@Jason-SamkoI remember when I was a kid in the '80s, my parents GM station wagons had that same treatment.
I bought a GMC Sierra 2500 HD Duramax diesel with Allison transmission, much more truck for the money, I want to see that little $70K truck pull my 30' Airstream.
Yep can get alot more truck for alot less money
Colorado ZR2 all day.
@@mailborder agree and being able to save 20k
Pos truck though and terrible resale. Soon as you drive that Chevy off the lot you lose 40%. Nobody wants a Chevy but good luck
Hoping you would've checked the locking gas door. Such as it is a new feature. Sharp truck.
There's some really good stuff on this truck. Absolutely love the under-body protection you get with this. The lift and suspension is outstanding. But you can already see the poor quality of the vehicle inside. The price tag is just silly. And with all the issues that Toyota is having with these I just can't see this really lasting without being a nightmare. Its at best a show truck. If anyone used it to its capabilities it would just be a disaster. Plus the sliding rear window is no longer standard witch is just a final kick in the teeth. Even if I had the money for this I would look elsewhere. This is the worst deal in the entire segment.
I agree 100% Its the worst deal in the segment
That skid plate is going to catch some rocks and branches 😂😂
Yep and shovel mud like crazy
😂😅
No thanks, no storage, ugly ‘snorkel’, zero back seat leg room, astronomical price along with questionable reliability, definite pass🤦♂️
And the actual factor that you can't afford it
@StripedTurkey I feel the same personally. I would tolerated some of the build quality issues if it was 45k. But the lack of storage is unacceptable. Stupid battery😂
Agree.
I’m thinking about getting a 4Runner since it’s still made in Japan (I believe) and I have a 2023 Tacoma ACLB TRD OR V6 for the reliability and I am thinking about doing rideshare with it since the MPG is supposed to be 24mpg. I just hope it takes regular 87 octane unlike the Land Cruiser 250 which requires premium.
@@J.Young808 Looks like the lc and probably the 4 runner manual says it recommends premium but doesnt require it.
Nice that it comes with the 6ft bed
This is a 40K truck selling for 66K! Ridiculous. This is one of the reasons I left Toyota camp and got me Frontier Pro4x….with a TRUE naturally aspirated V6!! Simple! Not some over engineered battery powered 4 cylinder with overheating transmission.
40k is out of touch… more like $55k MAXXX to be in line with competition. 40k days are way long gone.
Nothing giving you 465 lb.ft of torque and this many accessories is gonna be anywhere close to 40k. For context a mid trim frontier will run you 40k and some change. This is a different category
How ridiculous you sound. Get your head out of 2016. Unfortunately inflation has wrecked just about every product including vehicles. As a matter of fact a new 2024 base Trd off-road costs LESS than a 2016 same spec taco was when it was new adjusting for inflation (yes that’s right less)
If you’re going to complain I’d recommend whining about how our politicians have ruined any sort of comfortable living or wellbeing .
No front locker.
Extra width from plastic flares and wheel offset, NOT longer UCAs/LCAs & wider axles.
Dang it! I forgot to mention that. Mentioned it in all my videos about this truck during pre production and forgot it this video! Thank you. You are spot on.
18:06 the Morse code says “Accessory Ready”
Thank you
I actually bought this exact truck lol
Very nice! Congrats on a sweet truck!
Hard, hard pass. 66k and no rear vents? Thanks for the in-depth video though, now I definitely care about these even less than before.
@@BayouToad the truck has potential. And some cool features. But build quality very low and priced way to high
I bought my 23 pro 4x frontier for 42k, put 33’s on, dobinsons ims suspension with 2.5” lift, high clearance upper control arms, Prinsu rack and a few other small bits, I’m under 50k into the Nissan. I’m unaware of what this Toyota can do for 20k more, that my Nissan can’t do
great point and money well spent in the frontier. such a great truck
Great review complete with some pertinent information you don't consistently get from other reviewers such as actual payload capacity. Toyota doesn't seem to understand that the people actually into overlanding are almost always people who buy used and modify their vehicles to taste. Trying to build a ready made overlander for the 12 guys that can't figure out which end of the screwdriver goes in the screw is probably going to be a flop. Especially for the price. It's sort of like when Chevy tried to build a ready made hot rod looking truck in the SSR or when Plymouth made the Prowler. Both companies missed the point of why guys love the old hot rods in the first place.
Excellent points
One of the most overpriced truck right now. It msrp's for 7K more than the trd pro here in Canada. Trailhunter is 87K.
As a fellow Canadian, these things are priced ridiculously. 86k for a Tacoma? Plus tax (15%) Jesus Christ

So happy I got the 2024 Chevy Colorado Trail Boss, that Trail Hunter is insane at $66K.... very tight back seat, no rear air vents, no under seat storage.
@FakePersonna agree 100% and think of all the money you saved for a truck that has the same power, no hybrid bs and has exactly the same capability
Truck looks phenomenal! Is it the 6ft. Bed on it? Cant wait to drive the hybrid. The tailgate feels way to light / flimsy to have a
Lot of strength and endure a beating
@@JB-yu6sf I didn't look at the specs of the trailhunfer bed but sure looks very long. Probably is a 6 foot bed. The wheel base looks longer than my gladiator
Love the level of detail and how you relate to off road capability and nuances.
@ryanolson8295 thanks. Glad you enjoyed it
Couldn’t tell how much extra space there is under for spare tire. Do you think you could fit a fullsize 35 under there?
I bet a 34 would fit maybe a 35 but not promising
I think TRD-JON looked into it. If I remember correctly, then 35 doesn’t fit.
@is6566 thank you for answering
The way the front fenders flare out, it almost looks like a dent that has a crease. Good looking truck over all.
Second time I've heard that in the comments today on it looking like a dent
That's a beautiful truck and very nice Tacoma. I think there's two big misses here on that truck. The first being the price is ridiculous, I know you get a lot but it's still very high for a midsize. The second big miss is forcing people to have a hybrid system not having it be an option. The point of this truck is for overlanding for over landing you're going to want that underseat storage and all of that gets taken up by a battery system. Just so stupid. I think to better play with these new tacomas is to get a TRD offroad which gives you all of the electronic offroad goodies and then just outfit it yourself.
@@OdysseyOffroad agree 100 on all points. Well said
Thanks for the review.
Good to know that the rear seating is tight..
Very tight. Like shockingly tight
Not a fan of the skid plates on both the trailhunter and the pro because the leading edge of the skid plate would act like a shovel and scoop dirt, sand, rocks, snow, etc between the engine oil pan, transmission and the skid plate itself. Nice looking truck however and it doesn’t have the useless/worthless suspension seats like in the trd pro. Great review Jason as always………👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻
@deantrainr agree front skid is weird and the floor mats are horrible and the front tow hooks bug me. The teuck has potential but the build quality in this one was really suffering. So many corners cut and super cheap parts. And the complete lack of storage is crazy
@@Jason-Samko 100% agree on all counts Jason! Yea, like you said, it’s not even worth $45K not to mention almost $70K.😳. It’s just got a few more bells and whistles than the Tacoma trd off-road I drove awhile ago which confirmed to me that ALL fourth gen Tacoma’s are very cheap and very “junky” in my HUMBLE opinion.😳
I’m sure the out-of-touch guys at TFL will love this and buy it asap. 😅 Seriously though, these will sell initially to rich people, then Toyota will run out of people dumb enough to overspend for a midsize truck like this.
Lol. Yeah, never seen people get so excited over the dumbest features.
Tfl had a pretty bare bones TRD offroad that they recently sold. And what's so bad about making a top trim spec for rich people to buy? Toyota has the regular trims too. The TRD offroad and sport will be the volume sellers like they always have
ALL the mid size trucks will have 4cylinder engines in the next couple of years so we just gotta get over it or grab a 2022 or 2023. The the price is nuts but its got everything a mid size truck could have. It's like a Raptor R, but I have seen a Ranger Raptor marked up to 80K. Good review.
@kevin5145 yep if you are looking for toyotas most capable off roader this is it!
Samko at 19.55 did u notice on the top bolt of the rail that it was maybe a quarter of the way screwed in ? Is it me or was it a crappy add on on the dealer of the manufacturers part ?
@johnfranktullo3463 I did not notice it when I was filming

When the TH was announced, I was very interested in buying one and was going to wait until 2025 models came out. After seeing the 24 come out and now seeing this review, so so glad I went ahead and bought the Rub X instead of waiting.
The TH is nice and Toyota fans will love for sure.
wonder is you can run a winch on this thing?😅
@blj_1970 I'm sure they will have winch ready bumpers out soon for it. This truck would require so heavy money on top of the already heavy price tag to get it capable of offroad use
@SamkoWorkShop true, this truck should have a stee frontl bumper with a winch, at this price point. loose the bed rack, add a steel front bumper
I hope it sits all year. Toyota is now taking advantage of customers with these prices! How it the f-150 Tremor the same price as this mid size 4banger
@nathancruz9070 agree 100%. Interesting that this truck sold in 4 days! I was shocked
Ranger raptor for 10k less is compelling
@kessrock and faster and better built and better suspension and a front locker and more capabilities......and and and. List keeps going.
yaint lyin'
It's a down right bargain
Ranger raptor is still 59 grand plus dealers ridiculous 10 grand markup and states. Will still cost you over 76 to 77 grand to buy it.
I'm putting the 265/75/16 on my 3rd gen Tacoma will be about the same size tire as what's on there! 9.9" ground clearance. I could add a full set of skid plates, 🪨 rails, front & rear metal bumpers + sumo springs I wouldn't have much payload left but a lot of those bumpers don't add much weight The rear steel bumper adds like only 25 lb or something. Do all that about 5K install myself & have 85-90% of what that thing would do off-road & $46K would be my total price. Just out of curiosity how would I void my warranty by doing any of those mods?
That would be an awesome truck and none of that would void warranty
Toyota is gonna start making the next generations without doors and windows "for offroading" and try to sell for $100k. I'll jack up a camry at this point for better value
Good job with the review. Payload is not too bad considering that it already has all the important steel bits (if I saw correctly then payload is over 1,200 pounds).

Otherwise this was a good review. Many folks dont realize how expensive alot of the aftermarket accessories, especially from ARB, can get once you start to build out a rig. Atleast this is warrantied. I like this over the TRD pro as its seems to have a clearer purpose than just 'go fast'. It is pricey but seems like it will be mighty capable. Cant wait to see what these look like with 35's
Something tells me they will have fewer allocations on this than the Pro.
You are correct arb parts are not cheap! They are also very very well made. This thing with 35s would look amazing

The simple V6 (wanted the 2.7L 4-cylinder) is one reason I got my 2023 Tacoma TRD OR ACLB, the main reason is the Access Cab doors which the 2024 deleted. For the amount of tech on the 2024’s it doesn’t override the craptastic build quality.

Very happy I went with a Bronze Oxide Trailhunter myself. A lot of people ding it for the price and I get that from most people's perspective. Not an issue for me. Also, they don't take into account that you're not gonna have much to do in the aftermarket. This is a truck for someone who wants to go overlanding tomorrow, not worry about compatibility of parts, and have it all under warranty. I would have put all of this stuff on here anyway eventually, better to have it covered by warranty than to not have that. Also, consider the value retention. Toyota retains value better than any other brand out there. Frontier for example might retain 10% of its value after 10 years. Tacoma, more like 40%. So are you really spending it or are you investing it? If it's out of your price range then that's that, but if it isn't and you just feel bad about spending that kind of money, this comment is for you.
@joshdudeguy2830 congratulations on the new trailhunter! And love the bronze
Thanks for a great review, made me glad I chose the 3rd gen. They didn't improve the leg room, they put the fire Hazzard under the kids seat, not great if you have ever seen a tesla burn. Over 70 after tax!!! Absolutely 🐂 💩
@john… Very true. We just got an SUV for my wife recently and test drove Audi, BMW, and Mercedes mid size SUVs. They were all just around that price and their fit and finish and interior quality were at least two steps above what is in the Tacoma. Electronics, digital displays were at least one step above and same price or less. Last I read the hybrid battery is not sealed. Not going to work fording. Also when the battery is depleted you just have the 4 banger carrying extra weight off-road not to mention the laughable payload. 1245 lbs on an “overlanding” rig 😂 Junk.
Not to mention a smaller gas tank; 18.2 gallons total I believe.😳
I think there are ton of reasons why this truck is problematic. Most important is the price but the 1,245 pounds of payload is not the issue. 1,245 pounds AFTER steel bumpers, full skid plates, and rock sliders is actually pretty good. The steel bumpers are at least 150 pounds added weight, skid plates at least 100 pounds and rock sliders also 100 pounds. That is 350 pounds that you would need to add when building an overland rig. This means the truck would need to start with about 1,600 pounds of payload to have the 1,245 pounds AFTER you installed the aftermarket parts. That is full size territory.
I not buying another Toyota, I'm not going their route again !
@clintperry799 I see alot of people say that
all that money and they cant make a glove compartment that closes secure and tight

@@williebonilla5989 the lack of rear vents is baffling. Especially since the land cruiser has so many rear vents
Nope, all they did was put lipstick on a pig. I’ll keep my v6 2021 fully loaded long bed off-road that I walked out the door for $41k. With the $26k I saved I could MAX OUT my truck with better suspension, a super charger, rims, tires and killer add on’s, and still be ahead by about $13k. Good luck Toyota, you really borked this gen Tacoma.
I think many 3rd gen owners feel that way

Colorado ZR2 is $20k less... and arguably still a better off-road truck
@lgbnz agree 100 and it's not really arguable. The zr2 crushes the tacoma th or pro
Holy smokes ! Toyota has completely lost touch with reality. That truck is absolutely not worth 60K!
sure is alot of money
A battery pack that can explode when exposed to water, on an off-road vehicle.... What could go wrong?
If they dont think water can reach that high, then theu wouldnt add a "Snorkle" to the truck.
I don't trust any of these hybrids. Seems like every month a different model of hybrid gives a park outside warning of possible fire.
@@Jason-Samko The hybrid system is great for things that do not go off road. I guess we have to wait and see. I do know that the 500k tacoma is dead.
