The song and lyrics are in reference to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Both William the Conqueror and King Harald were of "Germanic" roots but the Norman Conquest was directly against a "Viking" King and ended the Danelaw that dominated the British Isles (particularly England) for several hundred years. This was a time of vicious battle where no quarter was given...Harald and his men were slaughtered in the attack. The Normans were well known for their superior steel blades and armour. The phrase "The winds of Thor were blowing cold" is a reference to the Norse God Thor and possibly the fact that ultimately this was a war between "Norse" people as opposed to outsiders. Thor's Hammer was often carried by Viking warriors as a "Good Luck Charm"...and in the case of the Battle of Hastings it proved not to work. So, either the "Good Luck Charm" had "gone cold" or the fact that two peoples sharing the same Pagan belief with the same Gods were fighting each other. The song almost certainly pertains to Middle Age Britain somewhere around the time between the first Viking raids in the seventh century and the Norman Conquest in 1066 AD. The song was written at a time that Led Zeppelin was heavily influenced by both Viking and Celtic mythology and history. This is expressed in the third, fourth and fifth albums in particular.

Ron Sevon Completely wrong, the danelaw was ended by a saxon king well before william invaded, Harold was fighting the Vikings in the north near york, there last strong hold, defeated them and had to march south to fight william in hastings. The Normans were of Norse/ French decent.

I thought this was more about a hit squad, one that is doomed to never return from. Some critics and journalists have called it a “Satanic quest” as it refers to cold blooded murder. Others have guessed that it’s taken from Tolkien’s Ring trilogy

But I did see an interview and they did say that, Jimmy Page to be exact, and they nodded in agreement. If I ever come across the interview I'll definitely share it. Regardless whether you believe it or not though bottom line is you rarely find a cover where the band that's covering it sounds much better than the original and that's the case here. Tool's version is just better and I absolutely love Led Zeppelin. It's free to have your opinion ofcourse.

I would love to hear how that's possible. I admit it's hearsay until I can find the source where that interview was but to be so sure that they DIDN'T say that is making even more of a leap but maybe I'm talking to Jimmy Page himself on a random comment right now. In that case maybe I can get your autograph and you can tell me what you really thought of this song Jimmy.... lol

“See you like started pushing around like you were going to mosh a little bit there, for me Tool does not do that to me.”
    - Sori
That reminds me of when I saw Tool two days in a row, (supporting Lateralus w/ The Melvins opening for them): day one, in Tampa, the audience just vibed like Sori, and I think that energy we gave off influenced their set. I think that because day two, in Orlando, the audience was losing it straight away, and during their set there was a good deal of moshing and whatnot. It seemed like the band recognized, “these people aren’t being rude but they’re also in control of the energy here and we’re not going to be able to calm them to play more of those vibe-inducing songs.” To contrast that experience with when I saw them in my hometown, Fort Myers, with Tomahawk opening for them, the vibe was straight up rudeness, with people booing Tomahawk and shouting “Sober,” and the like. They played a pretty lane set that night, which definitely affected my mood later on, (something I can see in retrospect.)
Considering it’s originally a Led Zeppelin song, good chance it’s a direct reference to LOTR.
For some reason, something y’all said reminded me of Over The Garden Wall, and I highly recommend giving that a watch if you haven’t seen it.
