Funny because I’ve heard stories of the gear selector breaking on the f pace or whatever their suv is called. Weird they couldn’t make it reliable like this one when this car is older
It is just a pb when you need to move your car in N but can’t start it … (battery or whatever) But you have zipper which unlock the gear in emergency case
Regarding the door lock handle control, my Jaguar has that too, and it's never been a problem. I don't think I've once accidentally opened my door. It's pretty easy to pull or push the handle to manage locking without pulling too far. I've always thought it was a very elegant and well thought out system so long as the added complexity was reliable. And it has been for all these years.
Exactly i own a Fiat Abarth Punto and it also has the same door mechanism and i always thought they were a cool and well thought out minimalist approach instead of buttons everywhere for everything.
I have an XFR and love it. Sure, its not as fast as the M5 or S6 or E55, but who can drive that fast on normal roads any way? It's just an awesome machine with enough power to get out a sticky situation when I need to and the luxury that comes with it is an added bonus. Mine is fully loaded, even with adaptive cruise and accident detection with auto braking. After all these years, this car has held up well and not one leak from underneath.
Buddy has an XKR convertible, brought it over last Saturday, still such a special car, you rarely see this type of Jaguar. I just admired that thing in my driveway the whole time.
"Another mistake Jaguar made because they didn't have experience designing modern car interiors was putting the climate controls in the infotainment screen." Whew, glad nobody does that today! Right, Lexus? Right? *Right?*
It's a weird thing to do because the X-type, S-type and XJ, which all also had touchscreens, had physical buttons for heated seats. Then with the next generation (XK, XF and I *think* the last XJ) they inexplicably moved it to the touchscreen. So it wasn't a lack of experience, it was just a weird decision. Jaguar's always been more advanced than they get credit for, and one example is that I think they were the earliest manufacturer to use touchscreens across their entire model range.
@@nickporter4279 and today with the XE and XF they're in the screen again, except for the F-Type which has it integrated beautifully in the temperature dials (you press them and then twist to increase heat).
@@nickporter4279 you're right! I had forgotten about it. I think it might be the same with the new XE since it has the same buttons. There's a very smooth animation when switching between temps and heated seats in the button's display.
@@nickporter4279 Why? It's just a button. Does it matter if it's on a dash or if it's on a touchscreen? You do NOT have to scroll through a menu to get to it, it's on the default home screen so it's one touch regardless of what type of button it is.
I have a 2012 XKR with the Dynamic package, next closest to the XKR-S, mostly just missing the S front end. I love the car. I disagree regarding unusable backseats and practicality. The backseats are great for kids when they are not too young and not too big. Our 4 and 6 year olds love sitting in the back. We take the car on family road trips; recently did a week long trip to the mountains. It's comfortable, sounds amazing, fast, has the space for everything we need, and is awesome on back roads. It is also split personality... quiet, comfortable cruising grand tourer, but then put it in Sport and Dynamic modes, opening the active exhaust, shifting manually, and it becomes a wild beast.
One quirk you missed Doug is all the Spitfire allusions in the car: it’s made at Browns Lane Coventry, where during the war Spitfires were made. As a result, the shape of the rear lights is reminiscent of the Spitfire wing and the rings inside the rear lights are an allusion to the roundels on the aircraft. Inside the dash panel in front of the passenger loosely does the same thing. The cooling vents in the bonnet are loosely styled on the Merlin exhaust ports. There are a large number of little Easter eggs in the car alluding to it’s history too. I had the XK-R and it’s a wonderful beefcake: it has great duality of personality. It can run down to the shops like Mrs Miggins but open the taps up and pure fury is released, along with the battlefield sound track. In the upper speed range it annihilates pretty much anything on the road, I’ve had mine up well over 160mph on the autobahn and it’s pulling like a train (although you need speed and black packs on the regular R to go over 155). I drove mine through France to the Picos mountains in Spain, and it was the most brilliant GT ever (assuming there are two of you). An interesting point is that the coupe and the convertible are the same car: the roof is added on after body-shell construction for the coupe. It means the coupe has superb stiffness, it isn’t reliant on the roof for rigidity. I don’t believe the gear selector is an issue unless the car is very old. I had no problems with mine in 40K miles of ownership except constantly wondering if it had a hole in the fuel tank…
Wow! I've had a '12 XK-R for five years now and other than the little leapers inside the side marker light housing I had not noticed all those details before! Things like that are why JagUars show up at concours events 30 years after they were sold.
I have owned many petrol Jaguars and they have one thing in common,.......they all have HUGE holes in the petrol tank! The V8's were not as bad as the V6's, however. It's a small price to pay for such a wonderful car.
That color has to be one of the best colors in the car industry. That color on the c8 corvette is better though. Thanks for making the day better mr. Doug!
Honestly, I've loved Jaguar before I even had a license as a teenager and I'm 35 now. Jag never had to try to court me. And while I do miss the traditional Jag styling from my youth, I have to admit, I'm really in love with the new design language.
I've been a bit disappointed with their recent models (brilliant I-Pace aside), but otherwise agreed. Always baffled me that Jaguar wasn't a more popular brand, they were often making the best cars.
Tom, Tomas, Tommie... you know what I cannot take seriously? The demeanour of would be pressure washers revealing a lousily dripping peepee. How about going back to sacking comments, and spelling sandwiches.
I own one, and my advice for all modern jags would be to learn to do your own work. That's not to say it's unreliable, in fact I'd argue the opposite. But when something does pop up, places will try to charge a premium when im reality it's not that difficult a car to work on.

@@xd1771 Nothing major, and mine had 120k miles on it when i got it. The engine's been flawless, most of my problems have been linked to the battery and air con. Battery drain is quite high, so many owners have it on a trickle charger if not daily driving it, otherwise that can cause issues. If you're seriously looking, Google the duckbill issue related to the AC as that is a relatively common problem that can be expensive to fix. The TPMS is a pain in the arse too. Mine cost £12k, so was spectacular value for money, so long as you can afford running costs. Insurance is good, UK road tax is high and I average 26 mpg(UK). Man, I've avoided this episode for almost a year. As an owner of an X150 XKR Cabriolet, I didn't want to see what young Douglas' thought of my baby. While he was rough on the interior, he was complimentary on it overall! (BTW, I own a new XJ and a Range Rover. That door lock function is--hands down--the best. The half-pull becomes second nature within hours. Having dedicated buttons to lock & unlock doors is silly to me now.)
This summer I bought a 2014 Jaguar XK with 24,000 miles on it. Absolutely LOVE that car. 6 months later and I still find myself going out to my garage right before bed just to take one last look at it. It is truly a "Splendid Cat".

In my Jag there are no "lock/unlock" buttons for the doors. You have to pull the handle slightly to unlock the door if you're picking someone up. It's annoying because after all this time, i still open my door sometimes. I guess you'd have to experience it to know what he means...but it's annoying.
The interior door handle comment is BS I want quirks and features, not someone crossing their arm across their chest and using the wrong hand to open the door
I was taught to open them that way. supposedly, it moves your chest / body towards the door, forcing you a better look outside / on the wing mirror for potential objects coming from the rear. I only did this in driving lessons. I abandoned it afterwards because I always check wing mirrors before I open the doors whether I use my right or left hand.

My sierra used to have that feature. 33 year's without a problem
After all these years, this car has held up well and not one leak from underneath.

if it started when it was time to leave then really "you rarely see this type of Jaguar"
One of my MOST favorite Jaguar models.
"Another mistake Jaguar made because they didn't have experience designing modern car interiors was putting the climate controls in the infotainment screen."
Whew, glad nobody does that today!
@@jacobras I think the I-Pace has them integrated into the dials too.

Ditto on all your comments, mine is just a lowly XKR, but love it just the same! Serious people just don't take Doug seriously!!
One of the most underrated cars of all time
The way Doug over exaggerates getting out of the back seat is Oscar-worthy. I'm guessing he never got out of a 2-door coupe in the 80s.
He didn’t because he’s a child
No dude, trust me. I've had several two door coupes from the 80s, I also have one of these. These are worse.
Doug is the type of guy to look up and down before crossing the road
Doug is a type of a guy to look left and right before climbing up
The autolamp delay doesn't have its own switch, that's the headlight switch in general. It just lets you adjust the delay as well.
Why is it when I hear Doug say "Cars and Bids" I way my arms around like a lunatic?
hahahh
Great review, Graham. A practical assessment of the experience.

Great fun though, and I'm really struggling to find something to replace it with that matches it for comfort, performance and prettiness.
I was going to say why would you want to unlock the door without opening the door?

The interior door handle comment is BS
I want quirks and features, not someone crossing their arm across their chest and using the wrong hand to open the door
I was taught to open them that way. supposedly, it moves your chest / body towards the door, forcing you a better look outside / on the wing mirror for potential objects coming from the rear.
