  • This video is intended for science students who speak English as a second or foreign language. It covers how to write the introduction of your research paper. In this video, which is Part 1, I explain what information you should cover in the introduction, and talk about citations. Please leave a comment if you find any mistakes or problems.

    Omg, this is absolutely fantastic. It is very explanatory and straight to the point. I have fully grasp what I need to do now. Thank you for sharing. Please can you do a video on writing the literature review, findings & analysis and finally the conclusions & recommendations. Thanks again.

      If you look at my channel, I have similar videos for each of the other main sections of the scientific research paper: method, results, and discussion. The literature review is basically contained in the Introduction unless it's a PhD thesis or something like that. I like the idea though, and if I can, I'll try to put together a video with more detail on the literature review part itself.

    Fantastic video, thank you very much indeed. I am currently writing my third scientific paper. However, when writing I prefer to write first the discussion, rather than the introduction. I am never inspired when writing the introduction. Thank you very much again!

      Thanks for the comment. I teach writing the Method first, but that's mainly because it's easier than the other sections. Personally, I tend to write the introduction first because it helps me figure out the "story" of the paper.

      Steve Kirk Many thanks!! For instance, once you write the introduction, how do you write the discussion without repeating what it was mentioned on the introduction. I tend to do that a lot :(.

    • @stevekirk4226
      @stevekirk4226  6 лет назад +1

      Good question. I think repetition is not necessarily bad. There is some required/unavoidable repetition. The introduction will state the hypothesis and purpose, and the discussion will remind the readers of those things. But there are some key differences: The introduction talks about previous research to argue for why the present study needs to be done, while the discussion compares the results of the present study with previous research. Some of the cited papers will be the same. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think the purposes of the introduction and discussion are quite different, but they do have some repetition to make the paper easier to follow. I think if you have to turn back to the introduction to understand the discussion, the paper is not written well. And many readers won't remember what you said in the introduction when they get to the end.

      Steve Kirk Really good advice!!! WOOWW I never thought it that way!!! Thank you very much indeed!!! You are a great mentor!!! I will definitely apply this on my next papers!!! Many thanks!!!

      @@stevekirk4226 Could I ask your opinion my research proposal is on the effectiveness of using mindfulness/meditation versus the effectiveness of medication on ptsd/anxiety on victims of sexual abuse & have trauma ( like anxiety and PTSD as a result) wanting to compare those who were prescribed medication versus those that did mindfulness strategies to cope. I only have to do introduction & methods section for my proposal. What research method would u suggest could be the simplest to use in a methods section? I was thinking an experimental design but having a difficult time coming up with how to word it exactly. I figured maybe you had an idea which research design could be simplest to implement. I just came across your videos and love them thanks so much 🤗🙏

    How to write review of literature .make a vedio

  • @azukimochipan
    @azukimochipan Год назад

    I don't know if this question will be answered but I need help hahaha (I'm writing my first research paper, pretty much a beginner at this). Would you say that literature review is to be written in the introduction? I did see that 0:36 says a "summary of previous research" but what if I wanted to write an entire section on what I have found/researched? Some websites (and my lecturer) say that literature review is a section on it's own titled "Literature Review", but I don't see such things in some research papers on pubmed, elsevier, etc. Quite confused, could anyone help?

    • @stevekirk4226
      @stevekirk4226  7 лет назад +1

      There's really not much that I could put in a downloadable version. The slides at 0:50 and 8:45 have the summaries, and there is a link to the research paper shown in the video in the description. Introductions vary somewhat from paper to paper, so it's always good to read lots of research papers and look at their structure to see how to put these points into practice. I'm working on a written version of this material, though, and I'll link to it when it's ready.
