Lots of big tire high HP guys are now running rear wheels with liners & higher air pressure. The new Hoosier 36" tire seems to be the tire of preference. Not interested in anything related to "street racing" so have no idea what they are doing. Good video as always Kev. Once you learn the basics as far as how 4 link works it makes the chassis tuning adjustments much easier to figure out. Performance Trends 4 Link program actually shows you how IC changes at launch depending upon bar length etc. On EGT's they are dependent upon the combo of course. A roots mild motor 1100 -1300 range, on a all out screw motor 50# of boost 600 down low & maybe 1100 on top end. (1/4 mile). A good rule of thumb on a screw is using a flow meter & boost gauge. (boost pressure/gpm) A ratio of approx 2.6 to 3.0 puts it in the ballpark as a general rule. I guess the answer is "depends" 😜 Read the plugs is bottom line. A web site with a lot of good info for blown Alky stuff is Inside Top Alcohol. A big nitrous motor will have EGT's in the high 1600's for a comparison. Cheers

Excellent video Kevin. One thing to add, the higher the IC the easier it is to transfer the vehicles weight to rear tire, the lower the IC the harder it is to transfer the weight to the rear tire.

When I had the 1471 on my car I ran 1000-1100 degrees on my EGT’s. They made it so easy to turn the motor. It was a 565 big chief head with coil on plug and I had the timing locked out at 32° all the way up to four boost at 27 pounds.

It been a while but on blown BBC alky altered we ran 32 deg locked out. 35lbs of boost. This was a 6.50 bracket car. Main tuning was clutch, pill for air. Maybe pull a degree or 2 to adjust power overall. On NHRA TAFC PSI hemi we were high 20's for timing if I recall (2002-2008). Low gear power management was a degree or 2 in or out for coarse adjustments and fuel in or out (6 shooter) for fine adjustments. Both were 11-1200 egt but as you stated the plugs will tell you what egts will be. I found egts were most helpful in seeing stage distribution ( nozzle spring checks to adjust), if you had a problem and top end distribution. In that order

Do you have any recommendations on who to watch about road racing on rough surfaces? I don't have enough seat time with different known parameters to really trust my own math. -- For example when I crest a hill WOT at 72mph and run over a cattle guard that's recessed on the exit side, the rear tends to buck and the front tends to bob. I'm on leaf springs, 470hp, 29" tire, 3900lbs with me in it, 56% front weight, 117" wheelbase, 32" from the axle tube to the front spring bracket, 18" high front bracket, 31" high rear bracket, 28" CG height, I want to go to a triangulated 3-link with a lower anti squat value and a forward I.C. to make the rear suspension squat over that bump. -- I'm of the thinking if I move the I.C. closer to the center of gravity and run 32" lower links into the stock leaf spring brackets, it'll be easier for the damper to do its job. If I promote this squat situation, then maybe I can at least isolate my front damping choices.
have you ever heard of using a pressure transducer to see whats going on with in-cyl pressure and looking at valve timing with an ocillloscope..... i'v done engine running test for automotive diagnostics....funny thing is i'v never heard it talked about.....i would think that this would be one of the most important things to know....you can see valve timing, and cyl back-pressure....

we run a level lower bar and 77 inches out at 112 wheelbase weighing 2985#. It runs .980 60' on a 34.5x17 hoosier. the farther you go out the tamer the hit is so we can run more power early and not crush the tire. big power changes things. On egt we run methanol procharger at 43# egt runs 11-1200 but each cylinder is different on what the plug shows. probe end goes in center of tube.

How does this work on mid-engine cars or otherwise stuff with really rearward weight distribution like 52% to 60% rear and where the anti-squat line is drawn from the hub center instead of the contact patch?
So lowering the rear mount of the cal=trac design on a leaf set up is for a hard sidewall tire on a prepped track. And closer to the axle will lift the front for more transfer even with the increased leverage of the the distance it has from the differential?

Generally on the caltracs you add bite to the sidewall by using the lower hole, if more than one, on the rear end, then the upper hole on the front cantilever. Really a parallel bar is a good amount of bite, but if I was on a hard tire and was looking for every bit of help I would get the bar angle going up from the rear towards the front. You're going about the EGT thing incorrectly. EGT is nothing more than a reference point to use for balancing the cylinders. Pull your timing back to 20 degrees and start sneaking up on it, watching the ground strap. Keep the plug happy, and the motor won't milk the oil nor burn pistons/head gaskets. As an example, I ran a 568 BBC with a 14-71. At 30% OD, it made 32 PSI. Egts were 1250-1300. At 1320 is would tulip the intake valves. But again, that was MY motor. Where you put the EGTs isn't as important. Anywhere 1-3" from the header flange. Just be consistent on the distance. The EGT is a reference for YOUR motor. Once you find a good looking plug, record the EGTs, then start using your port nozzles to balance the EGT readings. Then use some good software to know what to change your next main jet to for the weather of the next pass. And please, for the love of God, flow the entire system. You have no idea how far off those jets/nozzles are until you get them flowed. The stamped numbers are a joke.

@@KevinWilsonSBC Ditch the square valve and get a K-Valve. You need to be running port nozzles. Don't trust Enderle. Get someone with a good flow bench and have the pump, and every nozzle/jet flowed. You're not screwing around once you're above 20 PSI and you need to know what you're putting in that motor, and that when you make a change, it's the anticipated change.
@@billbirmingham Do you have any recommendations on someone? I will need to find a SBC intake that has port nozzle options. The TBS intake I have today does not and I am still running water with the standard 23 degree heads to keep the center exhaust valves cooled. How about how to estimate CG and therefor establish IC

If your using egts your in trouble. Only thing in that chamber is the plug. Plugs are gospel. all that matter.
Absolutely the plugs are the only measure of truth. EGTs are simply a datalog point once I determine the best plug reading for that cylinder. Go fast, go straight! Be SAFE!
