Appreciate the nitty-gritty tutorial, calm demeanor, and pre-emptive answers to elementary questions first-time exterior painters like me have, e.g. equipment, costs, etc. I kept thinking "who do you sound like?" and had to laugh at the preceding respondent who nailed it.
I gave up on spray shields. After meters of spraying the shield ends up with a thick layer of paint which wants to go places you don’t want it. Plus the stop start of spray, adjust the shield, spray adjust the shield. Now I take the time to mask up and the spraying is an effortless and simple process.
I purchased a spray shield that attaches to a roller extension pole. You can tape cardboard stripes to the shield that extend the full length plus two feet past each end. Have a helper stand behind you with the pole over your head. It is much faster than doing it by yourself.
You’ll have less overspray w an fflp tip and they make longer shields, I use 5 so I can rotate them as they become heavy w wet paint while a helper hoses the paint off and waves them dry so I only have to stop for ladder moves. Lay a long drop w weights or magnets over the roof if it’s windy to shield any overspray. Keep your gun steady so the fan is perpendicular to the soffit w a 50% overlap if using an orifice .013-.015 25%, if paint formula requires anything bigger like .016-.019, to get the appropriate mils otherwise the paints’ warranty/guarantees wont hold true. If I don’t have helpers I’ll take the time to tape up paper instead of shielding the body of the house and only shield fascia since it’s a pain in the butt to keep paper wet w paint from flipping towards the fascia.
Thanks for the demo and the tips. I’m determined to do many things about my house myself to save money. So here I am with soffit that is charcoal colored. I’m changing it to white. The fascia and gutters will be white too so I just have to protect the roof. My question is, going from charcoal soffit to white- is that going to require the same 313 tip? Do you recommend certain type of paint and/or paint company? Behr exterior house paint ok?
I would use a 211 tip for those tasks. Especially the gutter. I recommend a quality paint. Putting all this work into a project and using a cheap paint, not that you would Cheryl ( but a lot of people read these answers and so I speak to everyone) isn’t worth it. High end? Marquis exterior end. Medium: Behr ultra paint and primer included.
What about the overspray you're getting on the house? Also, will that paint require a second coat and if so will it clog the soffit vetalation holes? I'm going to be doing my sisters vented soffit that her so-called handyman got overspray onto when he painted her house. The house is tan & he got it on her white soffit & facia. One more question, is there a less expensive airless sprayer that can do this job properly? I dont have that kind of money as i had a stroke in April & havent gone back to yet, so funds are scarce right now for me. She's paying me to do this, so i would like to be able to MAKE some money & NOT spend my profits on a sprayer that expensive
That’s an excellent question! If you use a 517 tip, you will plug all of those perforations! However, I am using a 200 series tip and when you use a smaller tip like I am using here, there is not enough paint to come out they will clog those perforations. Thanks for watching
@@spencercolgan is this something most professional painters will know? We need to have our soffit painted to match the new gutters but am worried about it clogging the vented ones.
My biggest concern. My soffit vent holes are tiny. I have a “Tru Vent Soffit” system. Most painters in my area won’t paint soffits because they don’t want to held liable for attic ventilation issues.
Nice work! Bro, you are dressed like you're going out to dinner in 15 minutes! Brave and confident!

Christopher Walken paints a soffit!
Two thumbs to the sky!!
More like, Rex Ryan does Christopher Walken painting soffits... :)
Holy crap!!! Christopher Walken paints houses?!
This man hid that paint shield in his ass for six years.
When you need to paint a house real quick on your way to a golf game. 😂

Spencer Colgan Wallpaper & Painting Thank you much!🥰

I collect and use scrap Soffit board as shields
The part of the roof you put the shield under … can you pain that piece ? My house is older and that part is ugly 🤷♀️
Good job

@@tiffanysechrest9301 excellent point; the tip that you will use will be one in the 200 range. The pressure of your sprayer should be half

Great video. What about prep work? Did you have to clean it first?
Always power wash sir.
Spencer, Do you have to thin the paint with a 211 tip when spraying the soffits? Thanks
Yes
PS. could I use a small hand held electric sprayer as well?
Not powerful enough
What paint did you use?
I used Valspar paint and primer added. Semi gloss.
"Show them the sprayer" shows a second of it 😆 🤣
Is is hard to clean the spray shield? Is aluminium? Thanks
Yes, you just hose it off or come you can let the paint dry on it and use it again.
You have to clean it right away: just let it dry and call it a day. Cleaning it is too mi h work.
How do you do this from a ladder?
I wouldn’t use a ladder but a scaffold type platform ladder.
I do it with a ladder if your in shape it's not bad.
Overspray on that roof. Mask the top of the gutters. Otherwise mostly how I would have done it.
4:52 he sounds like Christopher Walken
Just covered the gutter with over spray even counting on air drying.
This dude is Christopher Walken's voice actor
No respirator, no safety glasses and spraying directly overhead,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Do you want a gold star or a silver one?
