What’s the CX5?
This is Mazda’s best seller
It’s their compact SUV
CRV
RAV4
Forester
What’s the Carbon Turbo
I call it the playboy spec
Big turbo power
We’ll talk about this more on the next point
Fancy black accents and styling package
Grille
Headlights darkened
LEDs as std
Lower splitter
Wheel arches
19 in wheels
Wing mirrors
Rear diffuser
Plus there’s some stuff going on inside that we’ll talk about a little later
Engine
Here you get the 2.5T
On premium gas it makes 256 hp
320 lbft
On regular gas it makes 227 hp
310 lbft
This still makes it the most powerful in the segment
If you don't count RAV4
Or MAzda’s own CX50
Little Maza logo embossed in underside of hood
AWD
Standard across all trims
Love to see it
This is what i got wrong last video
Also a 6 speed auto
Means 0-60 is done in under 6.5 sec
Very quick for the segment (Prime)
Fuel economy
That big power and performance has a penalty tho
24 mpg combined isn't great
Color
Mazda is known for their Soul Red paint
But a year or two we tested the CX50 and it came out with this
Zircon sand metallic
This spec reminds me A LOT of that car
For the carbon turbo you can only get
White
Or zircon sand metallic here ($450)
The non turbo carbon edition will give you gray and some other options
Trunk
The CX5 is arguably the best looking inthe segment
Maybe only CX50 is better
But looks come at a price here
The trunk is still practical but not huge
29 cu ft
My wife and I own CX5s and we’ve driven across country in them a couple times
Power trailgate
But no close and lock
Floor can lower about 2 inches
Can drop rear seats from trunk
Cant in blazer EV last week
This is 6 in shorter than CX50
BUT with the rear seats down your trunk here is bigger than CX50
59 cuft
Interior spec
Terracotta here is the only interior for Carbon turbo
Non turbos can get red interior
Looks expensive as hekk in here
Brown contrast stitch
Interestingly, the accenting isn’t carbon fiber
Misleading?
Towing
Not many people will tow with this thing
But you can tow up to 2000 lbs
Cx50 will go up to 3500 lbs
Rear seats
Touch unlock only front doors
Terracotta interior the only way you’re getting your carbon turbo
Looks excellent
Legroom is tight
Headroom is good tho
Vents
Chargers hidden in center armrest
No heated rear seats
Can option
Front luxuries
Heated and cooled seats
Get REALLY hot
Memory seats
No heated steering wheel here
Can option
No pano roof
Have to get cx50 for that
Cluster
Semi digital here
7 in screen
Other brands are bringing full digital
HUD here is decent, but simple
Safety & steering wheel
Autopilot suite is ok, but lacking in comparison
Adaptive cruise, lane keep, but no lane centering
Paddle shifters tho
Center screen
10.25 inches std
Wireless acp & aa here now for 2024
ACP is touch screen but native UI isnt…
ACP is only touchscreen in park and low speeds
No 360 camera here
Can option
This has nav equipped
$450 - skip
Drive modes
Mi drive
Normal
Sport
Offroad
No adaptive suspension so it’s not a huge change
Housekeeping
No ambient light
Super wack
LED headlights std but turn signal not LED?
Rear doors open 90 degrees
Nice for loading kids
Price
The CX5 starts at 29,300
The non turbo carbon starts 32k
Carbon turbo starts 37k
As tested w/ delivery 39,400 Авто/Мото
Still one of the best vehicles in its size/price segment IMO.
Indeed 💯
Mazda is not afraid to go their own way vs the formula that competitors follow. I really hope they can keep doing that. As a long time car-guy I compromised enough just by choosing a CX-5 without completely selling out to "boring family hauler."
If it is well designed and yet working why to go for a radical change? An hybrid version of it would be nice to have but probably they may use the same Toyota RAV4 technology which may imply a CVT transmission Mazda was trying to stay away from years. I personally prefer their almost unbreakable naturally aspirated engine rather than the turbo, still a turbo is nice to drive but it all depends on what people wants either saving money on petrol or having fun downs the road! 😎👊 To me CX5 are to Mazda what MacBook Pros are to Apple. Some slight upgrades come up every year but the essence and reliability remains the same! 😂
@@MRP4U2B The upcoming Mazda hybrids will be using a Toyota combo direct/port injected engine & the Toyota hybrid technology/drivetrain from what I have read. The reliable eCVT in Toyota hybrids is nothing like the crappy belt/chain design CVT used in straight ICE vehicles. The only thing they have in common is the CVT in their names.
@@dystopia-usa - yes, that's what I've read from informal forums but I believe nothing official is confirmed yet by Toyota or Mazda. But I guess this executive decision will depends more on Toyota than Mazda's directors. In any case, having any CVT transmission on a Mazda is such a big blasphemy to car enthusiasts who yet see the real value of this hidden gem! 💎 Mazdas must be fun to drive. I wish they could find a way to bring back the RX-7. ❤️🔥😎 I also read they're trying hybrid technology by using a small rotary secondary engine to recharge the battery but not sure if that idea was implemented in latest models of CX-60. 🤷♂️
All 2024 models have the option to have touch screen for AA and carplay all the time, its just off by default
Yes!
you're right
I’m glad it is touchscreen, my pickyness is I wish the map had pinch to zoom.
Beat me to it. Touch while moving is an option in the settings. Just check the box and you're good to go. Now that the touchscreen hardware is here, perhaps we'll get an updated OS which will be all touch.
@@ChadHargis It may happen next year with the all new CX-5 as this is the last year (7th) for the current version.
Honestly, the dial is fantastic. I don’t want to go back to tough part about the dial is on a test drive coming from cars with the touchscreen it’s going to feel unfamiliar and you might not like it. However, if you own the car or spent a week or two with it And are willing to not actively hate it and complain the whole time once you get used to it it’s much better especially when driving it’s muscle memory. It’s so easy to make a multitude of changes without even shifting your seating position what’s the first thing you do when you need to use a touchscreen, lean up and brace yourself against the steering wheel, with the dial I can literally be pulling out of a parking lot and find a recent destination in maps and start Apple Music even while turning though a intersection and it doesn’t feel unsafe
This is my favorite car in the segment, hands down ! As an automotive enthusiast, you can't get better than this in terms of value, looks, and the whole package. Yes, you're sacrificing MPG for driving dynamics, let me tell you this car is one of the best drivers car for the money. Especially for a SUV. I drove a stelvio ti sport 2020 and it was the best handling , driving SUV I've ever driven. I went back to my CX5 and i was blown away, this car costs half of what that car costs and it delivers 80% of the feel. The handling is spot on, I'd kill myself if I have to drive a rav4. Mazda is so underrated. The fit and finish is better than the CRV too, great video. Thanks for punching it unlike other reviewers ! TBH this car drives better than the rdx , it feels heavier and not as nimble. Steering is also numb and brakes are even spongier ! I drove a RDX advanced 2021 model , also adaptive steering too.. but the CX5 has tighter steering for sure, heavier most people don't like it. I do !
Agree 100% with you about the steering. I find the seat to be very good as the bolster does not intrude too much. I don't like touch screens as often I can't get them to work when I want and would much prefer knobs and buttons.
I can assure you that initially the wheel for the infotainment is a little more difficult but after that learning curve it becomes extremely intuitive and far less distracting than a touch screen would be. Plus the screen is always clean and pristine.
I didn’t find it difficult. I had the basics down in a few minutes.
❤ dream car..... ordered,on arrival 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
At 7:28 he points out the swItch on the driver side seat is for the heated seat. That switch (has 3 settings) is on the dashboard. The buttons on the seat are for 2 drivers with memory setting.
that's right
Mazda are doing very well. I hope they keep it up.
I like the cup holders right on the engine 2:00
it keeps your coffee warm
lol!
Are the lights by your speedometer actually flashing or is that a camera thing?
Camera thing
Just a correction At 9:50 seconds in you said that the touch screen go's away after the car reaches a certain speed, Not True, in the settings you can Now change it to Allways be a touch in Apple car play and Android Auto.
True
The turn signals are LED! My turbo premium has led turn signals!
All of the 2022 and up cx5 has all LED bulbs.
I enjoyed watching your video on the mazda cx5 2.5 turbo carbon question have you ever driven the acura RDX AWD A-spec 2.0 turbo engine I would like you to compare both and give me your opinion and your personal choice which is more reliable and have a better driving dynamic am looking forward for your respond stay safe.
I haven’t driven the RDX since 2018/19 but it’s a LOT of fun to drive. Handles better than the Mazda, more fun - can’t speak to reliability long term though as I haven’t owned it
@@theshiftlist thanks for responding
i'd 100% look for a 2023 model with low miles. This isnt worth the price tag. They added hardly anything to the 2024 model yet increased the price by 1,500$
Picked up a 2.5 select today for $1300 below MSRP and no hidden fees. Shop around for deals
Bought an S-Preferred trim for 9% below MSRP two weeks ago. No bogus fees or add-on’s. Shopped 10 dealers; Mazda wants to move inventory!
Same here got 10% off mrsp
Agree. We decided to buy a 2023 and pass on the changes made on the 2024 model since they are not very major. The touchscreen is one change. The wireless Apple Carplay/Android Auto is a 2nd. The 3rd is that the base engine turns off at stop lights for up to 30 seconds and then restarts when you take your foot off the brake pedal, so you gain 1 mpg on average. Since we could find a Premium Plus with 3000 miles for only $29,000, instead of a new 2024 for $39,900 we passed on those three additions as they were not worth the additional $10,900 in cost (before taxes). The cars are otherwise identical as there is a new CX-5 coming in 2025 with Mazda's first home-grown hybrid system (not Toyota's). Once you get used to the rotary dial, it is fine. We saved about 33% on the car cost!
Bettor off to pay a couple of thousand more a d get the signature much better.

People have died, of no fault, sitting in park mode when hit by someone else just because they didn’t have seat belt on.
Early warning on seat belt is a safety feature. No need for the hate.
I have seen so many reviews that say the opposite opinion on the steering , the steering is the star [after the turbo] of the reviews , throttle house for one , check it out, hundreds of thousands subs ...Whoops .
The steering is still better than the rest of the segment but it’s not as good as it was in ‘16 was the point I was making
Not the way it came across , by far , I'll rewatch ...I don't remember the steering being not all that good as a reference to some other year of CX-5 , it was just the CX-5 you were in ...If I'm wrong I'll get back to you , and say sorry dude .@@theshiftlist
Sorry dude!@@theshiftlist
They are NOT all wheel drive all the time
Actually, it depends on the setting. In the first two modes of idrive you are correct. On the third setting, it works like a Subaru - all wheels all the time. You just have to set it that way every time you use the car as it defaults to the first mode of idrive when you start the car. They do that to slightly improve fuel economy for the EPA estimate.
You lost me at "Apple".
Man, i cant believe how much incorrect info in this video....
The terrible "safety" feature of the locked touchscreen was one of the most frustrating things I experienced while driving a Mazda for a rental. Until they change that, I'll never choose Mazda.
EDIT: Well, TIL. Good to know I have another brand of car to look at now!
You can set the touchscreen to be on/available all the time for Android Auto or Apple Carplay in the settings
you can disable that in the settings lmao
@xxstealerxx not the main mazda screen.... only way to get around the menu is the knob in the center. It's only apple carplay/android auto you can enable touchscreen. Mazda designed it like that to keep your eyes on the road. It's not that hard to learn how to get around with the knob.
You still need to do your homework prior to doing review because you still have it wrong
It’s long in the tooth, Mazda either a total refresh or just delete it from the lineup
Long in the tooth, for sure... but it is mazdas best selling suv, here in the USA, and globally. A redesign is coming for 2025. It could be on the chopping block, as the cx-70 is coming soon. But no word yet as of yet to what Mazda has in mind.... the big rumor floating around is HYBRID!
So long in the tooth I just bought one. Love it!
@@imkindofabigdeal4308 We just did too! Yesterday!
My CX5 looks better than anything I see parked at the shops. Just need to keep it looking sparkly.
I just bought one 6 weeks ago@@imkindofabigdeal4308
No hybrid, no sale.
Hybrids suck
everyone has an opinion. I would just like an option to have a hybrid.@@Mrtellitlikeitis
The RAV4 hybrid/prime are good alternatives if you don’t mind the markups and wait times
I’m sure Mazda is heartbroken to hear that craigo. 😂
@@Mrtellitlikeitis you don't have to buy one. Options are good.
