- I install an unbranded digital door viewer. A cheap unit that only cost £28 and was highly impressed at how good it was. The push button outside looks unusually low down; it’s only because when you step out from the front door you step down into the hallway, hence mounting it lower down.

Cheers mate as a disabled single mum not only did I need this piece of equipment but I needed to fit it by myself so cheers!
Also when drilling holes to a painted wall or anywhere bit more delicate, use a piece of tape on the surface where you drill from (drill through tape). It keeps the hole edges much more smooth (no paint or wood cracks)
Good tip for drilling doors like that with a spade bit (when it's hard to see the other side) make a pilot hole with a 3mm (or close enough) bit, not only does it mean you can drill safely from both sides, even if you can't see both sides at the same time, it will also keep your spade bit from wandering. Works great with augers or forstners too which only have a tiny little point so are harder to do your method.
As a CCTV installer I half the door and then half it again.... then depending on the viewing angle of the lens (160 degrees) one can get a good view of the subject behind the door...one must bear in mind it is their to see how many persons or who is calling you don't need a full body view because once you have identified the person to be friend or foe you can open the door safely. Also I use Blue Tack to mount the camera to see what is a good view before drilling holes. To be honest these new door cameras like the "Ring" unit one can't install it as a push button for a bell otherwise you get to see the persons chest area..... thanks again for a nice video.
I like that they "borrowed" the Skype icon for the language settings entry in the menu.
That's great to see. We have just decided to get a digital door viewer as part of our new front door. It'll be interesting to know how long it'll last and how well it'll work.
I thought that would be a wireless viewer. Apparently they are becoming lot more common, mostly due to fire regulations, because a conventional viewer might affect the doors fire rating, so locksmiths are starting to use wireless camera and screen systems.

Another tip for old fire doors in communal flats and hospitals , architrave and doors sometimes contain asbestos so best to check a register or a survey .
Did a video ever get made about installing the additional door security bolts etc? I haven't been able to find one. It would be interesting. Thanks.

I started with something similar to this but made by Yale and since then had a couple of other versions from China and now moved on to the more costly Ring Pro and now also got the Nest Hello. You may find in your work load more Nest Hello's coming your way especially in London as they are often needing an electrician to install them.

I would suggest a little circle cut in your pocket door with a blanking plate, if you can put a little pipe or something I don't know how your pepper spray works spray it through the door into an intruder whenever you hear someone trying to break in that will go for The eyes and they will have to leave just fill the porch with spray

The better types of these viewers have motion activated recording on them, so even if they come to the door but then leave, the viewer takes a picture or video. good for elderly or vulnerable people as it acts as a check for relatives on who is going around etc..

Do they have higher spec models that connect to WiFi, that if port forwarded they could be viewed via an app one the bell is rang? 🤔🤔
painter tape on the other side of a decorative surface will stop blow out. I recommend to use it on both sides just cause its cheap

I saw this exact door viewer when I went to Hong Kong last year! Also I believe Yale make a more expensive version of this.

would be smart with both, so if the powers out, someone blocked the camera etc you could just look out the old fashioned way... if you're up to no good then you would probably see that camera next to the doorbell and know they've circumvented you putting in that digital door viewer in the first place.

Well,its mounted within a building,so doesnt apply here,but if you mount it where its open to elements,try abit silcone in hole and around the external unit. Other wise wont last
Lenny Rossa butyl tape works even better than silicone. And doesn't screw up the surface as much.
Hi, how can I enlarge an existing 14mm peep door hole to 16mm without being able to centre the drill bit?
Not done it myself, but you may be able to use a "double holesaw trick". Search for this term on youtube.

One reason such devices have become so cheap is the mobile phone industry. Often, camera modules for mobiles are used which keeps costs down. The same has happened with USB microscopes and boroscopes
night mode means that the camera takes a black white picture in low light
Why would anyone press the doorbell button on the outside? What if he/she presses the normal doorbell next to the door? No pics taken I guess. These things should take pics/videos automatically whenever someone comes in the frame.

In my experience of buying cheap battery camera things, the lux and resolution are inversly proportional to relyability, 12v car reversing cameras that have same form factor as spyhole have lasted well as have the 1.5inch screen, no recording or software to go wonky.

I bet you can guess it by looking at the objet itself. A camera, a screen, the buttons... that's not a shaver.
Finally dragged my lap top out to click alerts for your vids. I've spent far too long using the TV YT app. the app doesn't allow me to type a post or click on alerts. Love the vids and the banter.
I was about to buy the door viewer and just as I went to amazon basket to complete the purchase I wondered if someone comes to the door and doesn't press the button are there sensors that will activate the recording feature?
I already have a door bell so its quite probable this will be used over the button on the door viewer.

It doesn't record/take a photo unless the button is pressed, but you can view what's going on outside in real time just by waking the screen by pressing a button.

Check out ring.com their door bell is not cheap but it is amazing as it streams to your phone, if you have an existing AC bell press you just mount the outdoor camera button unit in its place (the out door unit and indoor chime unit use wifi) and apart from putting the app on the customers phone and doing the quick setup (I can do an app install and set the system software in 4 minutes, only takes longer if the customer wants to try every ring and motion sense chimes) They can stream to multiple PC's, phones and tablets both Mac / Ios / Android :) I am not affiliated in any way just a happy installer who loves them :)

Is this a doorbell for an Ewok? I think it needed to be at least a foot higher, standard height for a peephole is 60 inches, perhaps it said that in the instructions if you read it first. DOH!
It’s deliberately mounted lower because as you step out of the front door you immediately step down onto the landing which is why it looks low down. It’s looks disproportionate in the video

Seems to me that you could view who is knocking as Tom pressed a button and it gave you a view of outside the front door. The recording or taking a photo only happens when you press the button.

So it's a dashcam with a flex between the sensor and the screen, basically. Probably eats those AAs at an annoying rate, knowing Chinese engineering.
