How to install a door viewer peep hole

    Peepholes are not all the same diameter so be sure to use the correct size drill bit listed on the package. You really don't want to mess it up. If you do happen to drill a bad hole in your door, rather than try to fix it, it may be easier to get a larger peep hole.

    I was fearful at first to do this on my own, but followed the directions as shown and voila! The pilot hole REALLY helps. And the tip for drilling half-way both sides came out looking clean. Used a 1/8 drill bit for the pilot and used a 1/2 for my peep hole size. I was installing my Ring camera on a door that had no existing peep hole.

    2:40 I never thought of using a flat-tipped screwdriver this way - thought I would need to obtain a very large screwdriver to complete the task. Thanks for this tip!

    drill bit size depends on the peep hole, but usually something like 5/8" or half inch. Start with smaller pilot holes (1/8 or 1/16).

      i only have one drill bill. a tiny one. can i not use it in a circular motion to make the hole bigger? is that crazy talk? lol

    • @xex2kok
      @xex2kok 2 года назад +5

      @@noorakay1937 Yes that is crazy talk. You would have no way of knowing what size the hole is at that point. Yes it would sort of work but you would end up with a hole that was too large or too small and also not round at all. It would be oblong and have issues. Not a good idea.

    If you're afraid you'll accidentally drill all the way through the other side of the door, buy a set of stop collars for your drill bits and place a couple layers of painter's tape around the hole you're drilling to prevent any scuffs.

    Hello Adam. Your video is the best out of 6 Install videos that I have watched. You did do this 9 years ago, so not sure if you want to re-do this one, but I do have a few ideas that could go in your more updated video if you are interested in doing a remake. Making a note of we the people that like wreaths was a bonus. This video is obviously on a new door, but if I have an OLD peep on an OLD door, and I am short, so need to lower the existing. Perhaps a video on how to fill in an old hole, would be helpful??
    Notes: One video used a square to keep the drill "square" to the door, so that your hole is straight and level. Another video was the replacing an existing peep hole for a newer wider version (180 degrees) and he used a large washer to remove the back side. I would imagine that the metal pop out from an electrical box would work well too. Lots of folks used Painters Tape to protect the door if you are removing an old peep, but only one person talked about using a punch to center the drill bit. Just a few ideas for your next video. The hardest part about this is having the faith that you'll drill the hole straight & in the center. If you don't, you'll have to replace the door. At least I would... if it wasn't centered It'd drive me mad.

    Great and useful video. Perhaps you should also have addressed the issue about the ‘thickness’ of the door vis-à-vis the maximum length of the peephole barrel. I bought one peephole online which turned out to be too short for my ‘thick’ door and also too small for the existing hole made for the original peephole that I was trying to replace.

    The drill bit is NOT going backwards! It's called the "wagon wheel effect". Look it up. It has to do with the rotation of the object catching up to, then going faster than the framerate of the video capture.

    Use a punch or ice pick to mark your hole and give your drill a depression to start into. Use tape over both sides. Use a 1/8" bit to drill your STRAIGHT pilot hole.

    Have you had success or experience mounting a mailbox slot on a hollow door? We have purchased all the right stuff (the hollow door mail slot, the sleeve, and sex bolts) but someone told us it's a very, very risky option on a hollow fiberglass door.

    if you had a self drilling half, or teeth on one side it could cut the door itself, then attach the 2nd part. could be battery operated half.

      Both forward and reverse. Forward to penetrate. Reverse to remove excess wood flakes. This way will not cause a sudden crack or wood being split off at the other side of the door. He is doing the professional way. ((:
      Anyway, its the camera being used that interests me.
