I never heard of these Wooton desks before. They are really exquisite. Doubt I'll ever own one. But it is inspiring to try and recreate the feel or ambiance of having such a desk. I think I will just have more antique wood cabinetry in my home office rather than metal items. Even wood items that were not necessarily used for office records but can be utilized in such a manner. Thank you for this video.
I found a copycat version of the low rotary style desk last month for $100 that was made about 1900. I am a furniture maker and have had that alert set for years and years and it finally paid off. The person who sold it was going to renovate it but had to move. Thankfully I have the skills to fully refabricate a few missing drawers and the internal bar locking structures. The drawers are very strange- they seem to be made to hold time cards, and had could be fully removed and placed in some sort of stand to access the time cards. No secret compartments though.
I have a Wooton desk that is very similar to this, although in much worse condition, and I am in the process of restoring it. Do you know if they originally had leather or oilcloth on the desk surface? Mine is oilcloth. Also, do you know if the gold is paint, or is actual gold inlay?
This desk has a leather surface and gold paint for the trim. The company did not take special orders but I would bet that they did have different finish levels you could pick from.
This is just marvelous!!
Aren't those just beautiful! They put today's "shipped in a box" desk to shame.
I completely agree!
