I'm not an Artist or Poet but a simple sailor. Needless to say, having a window into what makes others tick is beyond fascinating to me. Thanks for sharing ✌
Your desk is that actually what i' working so hard to get it. Actually i write on my small kitchen table, on this kitchen table i published eight children stories.
Dakota, a few months ago I finished University. I graduated and have been back at my parents' house sitting around for weeks working a lil part time job, feeling absolutely lost with 0 direction. I just watched this video and I dont know why but for the first time in dare I say months I've felt this burst of authenticity and inspiration inside of me. Watching you be unapologetically yourself in this video really resonated with me... thank you ❤
Also Dakota inspired me to dig through my Indian school library and I found Poe's poetry collection and I was screaming after finding and reading it, it's so good. So, thanks Dakota for recommending Poe, love you.
I loved this. I'm an artist, sometimes a writer but mostly a visual artist. I have a desk and for me the most important thing is to have the desk be as empty as possible so I can easily lay out a sketchbook or paints when I decide to work on something. I decorate the wall around the desk since I want to keep the desk itself sparse. I am also lucky to have windows around my desk that look out at our garden, the neighbors' trees, and the bird feeders. I have a friend who would hang her bras around her house, including from cabinet knobs in the kitchen, as a sort of "I am here!" statement, so I really appreciate the underwear decor lol.
I have OCD as well, and I have found that routine is terrible for me; it's like you said, all I would think about was my routine and what I was supposed to do next. If it got interrupted I would completely freak out and be unable to adjust. Huge creativity killer. I'm much happier going with the flow now. I love your desk and have a little vintage wooden desk myself, and it means everything to me. It's so important to me to have a little "artist's altar." I love to sit at my desk and write. I love to stand back from it and admire what I've done with the space. I have to pick up that Virginia Woolf book! Beautiful video, thank you so much for sharing.
OMG when you said that consistency is not for all people to achieve something great in their lives. I definitely go mad when every single detail just comes back to me every single day. it feels like i am stuck in a timeline. and I feel like I can't move or I don't have control over everything in my life. it's so real and so annoying to feel this way every single day. i feel so grateful to hear it from you too.
I really like the way you arranged the wall the way you did, it kinda looks like a tree to me. It’s as if the creativity of other artists are growing and blooming into you/your art. Also really related on how difficult following a routine is. I haven’t drawn anything for almost six months now, it makes me feel dreadful not being able to do what I love most, but at the same time having to exhaust my mental discipline to stick with a routine knowing how mentally unstable I am is just so frustrating and discouraging.
Thank you so much Dakota for letting us into your little sacred creating space, it's holds such a personal significance that I aspire to one day achieve
I can relate on the adhd/ocd thing soo much (might be a commonality amongst artists, especially writers). Writing is like playing with those aspects of ourselves that feel almost out of our control
thank you for sharing lady dakota! i'm absolutely obsessed with your desk; thank you for sharing about how it fuels inspiration for you. genuinely i've been in a creative rut, and i think it's because of how hodge-podge my room and creating space has become. nothing in my space is cohesive or makes me feel inspired; this video definitely inspired me to seek to make my space more nourishing for my brain rather than just allowing it to fall into awkward disarray.
This video has been posted as i just put together a tv stand today cause I realised I REALLY need a desk area, I couldn’t work on my bed to save my life. It’s crucial.
Even though I'm not in the creative field (I'm a resident doctor), This video resonates with me! I also just finished A room of one's own, and your dedicated creative environment seems exactly what she had in mind. I also totally get how you've said your brain works, as I am the same way.
this feels so personal, thank you Dakota for letting us in your little sacred space

I'm similar, I love to draw and paint and yet I've spent months trying and usually failing to force myself to do those things
