French Gender of Nouns - Masculine and Feminine / French Grammar Course Lesson 3

- Опубликовано: 21 июл 2024
- In French, gender of nouns are masculine and feminine. We call it "le genre des noms". In this lesson, we learn all the rules around French genders and how to change a noun from masculine to feminine, as well as countries. Countries in French have also different genders.
1. The obvious gender
The obvious gender in French is when we can guess the gender of the person such as: une femme, un oncle, ...
2. 90% rule
90% of the time, French nouns ending in E will be feminine, nouns ending with another letter will be masculine.
3. Masculine nouns
Some specific endings are always masculine in French, such as ACLE, AGE, EU, etc. Days of the week, languages, weights and metrics, English words used in French are always masculine in French.
4. Feminine nouns
Some specific endings are always feminine in French, such as ADE, ALE, TION, etc
5. Professions and people
French professions change when masculine and feminine. Most of the time, the noun will take an E when feminine, but many French professions are irregular when it comes to feminine.
6. Countries and nationalities
Countries in French are also feminine and masculine. Countries ending in E are feminine, others are masculine. Nationalities follow the rules explained in Professions and People.
7. Nouns with specific genders
Some French nouns won't change gender even if the person has another gender. For example, un bébé stays masculine even if it's a baby girl.
8. Same noun, different meaning
Some nouns have different meanings when masculine or feminine (mort, chèvre, etc. )

I always struggle to remember feminine and masculine words 😅 I am very grateful for how you break this down 🙏🏻
Merci beaucoup Stephanie ☺️
Booo
u do it to all the vids
A long lesson but I love that it is all together in one place. Often French grammar books are divided into topics and the grammar is spread out throughout the book. Very challenging to learn this way. I made a chart that I can refer to quickly with all the endings, many thanks. I also appreciate the ongoing chance to reinforce good pronunciation. Basics are so important to build confidence.
Diane thank you so much for your comment ☺️

Great lesson to break my problems of gender!
Ps. I love your E letter Superhero term😃
glad it helps you :D
Thank You so much! It was so useful.
Glad it helped :)
No gender in English. No neutral in French. Spanish and German, as you know, do have nouns that are neutral. English is definitely a simpler language -not a lesser one, just easier to learn. Love your lessons! 😍 THANKS!
You resumed it very well 😅 You are welcome frank :)
Loved it ...merci merci merci

Sup girl, Honestly, Your lessons have a high quality content and are interesting too, So keep going with the good work 'cause you're rocking. I think that the most difficult matters for me when it comes to learning french is the gender because I have to think whether I'm speaking about a masculine or feminine word. And also the conjugation part of some specials verbs, there are some ones that have a pattern and other ones that don't. This also applies for the possessive adjective and other aspects but learning a language takes time, So we have to take it calm but without lifting our foot from the gas pedal if you guys know what I mean.
Thank you so much Oliver ☺️ Masculine and feminine take time but you seem to be on the right path, keep practicing and it will come ☺️
@@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane Thank you Dylane. Literally I've just bought your grammar course because I found it interesting and I really feel like learning french. The first thing that I do by learning a language is to start speaking it since the first time in order that my fear and my insecurity dissapears, I do know that it takes time to get confy and that the knowledge tree has to be watered every day but this one will wither away. If I have a doubt I'll let you know that on my comments down below the prescription box. A bear hug :). Greetings to whatever the place you are on earth right now jaja n_n
Encore une fois, votre explanations sont claire

Thanks for being thorough👍👍🙏 BTW, you also speak PERFECT English in case you don't know💗💗 People who call out other's accents speak only one language🙄
That is so sweet of you ❤️ Some people have nothing better to do than criticizing others :/
"People who call out other's accents speak only one language🙄" = ahah this is so true!!
Thank you for your efforts!!
My pleasure!
very useful video, merci beaucoup!
Merci à toi :)
Merci beaucoup!😊
In English we have an order to adjectives? quantity, size, age, colour... etc. Does French grammar have similar rules? Do you have a video on this?
Thank you Dylane. What a fantastic resource and I'm really enjoying the videos. I did note that at about 6:25 you have 'un organisme' translated to 'an organisation' which I think should be 'an organism' instead.
Merci :)
Merci a ton aide Dylane,J’aime cette lecon’

Thank you so much 😀
😍 that's sooo clear thanks

The best teacher ever I found her!🤩🫶🏻✨
Merci
Thank you for your amazing videos! They have been really useful. I have a question about the list of feminine/masculine endings to learn. Only 3 of the masculine endings end with an E (ACLE, AGE, ISME), which would make them the exception to the 90% rule, all the others do not end in E. Similarly, only 2 of the feminine endings (SION and TION) end without an E, whilst all the other feminine noun endings do end in E. Would it be ok to learn that masculine nouns do not end in E except ACLE, AGE, ISME and feminine nouns end in E except SION and TION. It would then only require learning 5 rules. Would that be correct, or am I missing something?
You can use the rule but the most common words don't follow it. But you can use it and add to the exceptions as you learn :)
Good video. I often struggle with this. Always wondered why objects have genders anyway. In English they dont: a table, a chair, etc (the "a" being neutral). Also wonder why languages didn't evolve to do away with this needless gender of objects. Makes languages harder to learn. Anyway, thanks for the helpful video!
Thank you 🤩
Hey dear,I am from India and I love 💕 how you explained.😊❤,each part
Awesome! Thank you!
Great lesson, thank you. One minor correction, Exercise 1.3 item 7, in the file I downloaded a few weeks ago, has the English Raison instead of the French Raisin which through me on the gender selection..
Hi Bob, Une raison is a word in French so the exercise is correct categorizing it as feminine word. I hope it helps :)
Thanks a lot. It helps a lot. ❤Merci beaucoup. ♥️
You're welcome 😊
Lovely lesson
Merci beaucoup Ruth :)
Wow..super

The Goddess of French 👑👑
some queries im dropping while watching this cuz i dont have anyone else to go ask em and yes ik im not gonna get an answer to these-
1) i dont understand what do you mean by saying english words 7:49
im sorry if this sounds dumb cuz english isnt my first language-
2) 9:37 the words with sion as ending do not have an E in the end, all these exceptions from E?
im done with the lesson :)
it seriously helped me alot with genders in french.
1. You will have to google them because there are the same words in French and in English so it will be hard to explain :)
2. E at the end is the general rule :)
@@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane damn i wasnt expecting a reply tbh 💀 no one else was ever concerned to reply em so ye
i understand. i will google em! :D
[psst- i was just watching your first lsson of french course lol ]
good day/night!
You have a few courses on RUclips is there any specific order for these or can one do them in any order
You should start with pronunciation, it will give you a great foundation. If you go to the description box, there is a link named FREEBIES, you can get my self-study guide there and all you have to do is to follow the lessons listed. I hope it helps Cliff :)
@@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane Thank you 😊
Yay finally made it to lesson 3😂
Better late than never you know :)
Hi Dylane, I am a customer of your PDF book, its great and easy to understand, thank you. I would like to ask about the gender of the word parapluie, in your book, u said word ending with ie will be a feminine word and i dont see you listed any exception. So are there exceptions for the other criteria using your method?
Ending with E will be feminine 90% of the time ;) It's a good rule but you should always study the gender with every word :)
@@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane thank you so much for your reply, but the word "parapluie" ends with 'ie' and according to the book ending with 'ie' should be feminine without exception? (p.18 of the book) thanks!
@@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane Or should i just accept that there is always exceptions for all rules?
Est-ce que votre livre enseigner grammaire francais european? lol ... did I say that correctly?
Dylane, i have a question. why is it "er" stressed in the word "cancer" especially the letter r, while in the word "danger" "er" is just pronounced like é ? the above two are french masculine nouns btw.
Irregular pronunciation :)
Can you tell me what is called to Sri Lanka?
Ca i ask question where are you from?
Very nice
Merci :)
Hello!
What level is this lesson?
I’m only on A1 but also wondering what level is Ce, Cette, Ces?
A1 yes. Ce Cette Ces means This These
Hello, why we make chanteur chanteuse when chanteur ends with teur so it could be chantrice ?, thank you
That's just one of those things ;)
Mam what the lessons you deliver are not found in hardcopy?
They are, all my books are available as paperback.
Can you tell me how un 'psychologue' is pronounced? I can't if the p is pronounced or not
I just made a short video about this :D We pronounce P and S
Hy can you please tell me that how magazine is a masculine noun???
I don't know why since I didn't build the language but why is it an issue for you that's it's masculine?
❤❤❤
I have a question. 10.23 : une partition- a partition , une fraction - a fraction those are also English words. then why we put it in feminine? Can you pls clear this question?
These are not English words. English words are Marketing, Selfie, etc. Partition et fraction are juste words that are the same in both languages.
I got it. Thanks 😊
Every time I study the gender of nouns in French I always remember my teacher's voice say" remember that the basics in French can be the most difficult grammar for foreigners ".
Your teacher was right :)
measurements exception: une livre (a pound)
Dylane
EUR changes into EUSE
TEUR changes into TRICE
And chanteur changes into chantrice with this concept .
Is there anything wrong with it.
just an exception :)
It’s verry short important videos keep continue miss
❤
hey at 6:12 IN is pronounced like UN?
Yes
years and years…struggling by saying ‘un baguette’ and ‘une croissant’….the boulangerie lady now gave up on me. For me, baguette looks definitely masculine…you know why…
Thanks 🙏 i am from India
My pleasure :)
Cimer d’avoir fait la vidéo, bien que je sois un locuteur natif de français, elle est toujours intéressante et utile. Mais, j’ai envie de vous poser la question : pourquoi il y a des substantifs genrés en Français et beaucoup d’autres langues ? Logiquement parlant, ça a aucun sens. Comment une voiture a la capacité d’être une femme ? Comment un style peut être un homme ? C’est une chose que l’on peut pas expliquer ?
Le genre des noms est présent dans beaucoup de langues. Il n’y a pas vraiment d’explications quant à l’origine :)
Please forgive this reply in English. The reason for your puzzlement about *voiture* and other such words is that, like many generations of students of French before you, you’ve been woefully mistaught. Outside the realm of reference in a sex-specific way to animate beings, such as men and women, bulls and cows, stallions and mares (etc.) the use of the terms ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ to refer to the genders of French is the result of a confusion that has been around for so long there seems to be no way of correcting it. If you want to learn the truth about what’s really going on in French, and the other languages that behave similarly in this regard, I strongly urge you to study linguistics up to the level at which you can read Greville Corbett’s Gender (Cambridge University Press) and G.R. Tucker, W.A. Lambert and A. Rigault’s The French Speaker’s Skill with Grammatical Gender (Mouton & Co.). The scales will fall from your eyes and you’ll realize the extent to which you and millions of others, past and present, have been completely bamboozled about this subject..
is it correct to sa l'impot?
Son impôt :)
Madame, it means that Israel is a masculine country in French also?
Yes it is :)
@@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane Merci madame 🌹🌹
Why "Une baronne" is translated as "A baron" but not as "A baroness" at 13:49?
Probably a copy pasting mistake ;)
