    I’m not surprised at all by the Miguron. I bought an Elgar in S90V cause it was like $130 and I was excited to get my first S90V blade for that price. I put an INSANELY sharp edge on it with a fixed angle system, to the point I could shave the edge of a piece of paper and get curlicues the thickness of a human hair!! I then cut about 30 ft of cardboard. The last 10 fr were really hard to cut, so I decided to see if I could still get curlicues off the paper. I was shocked to see that I couldn’t even cleanly slice the paper anymore! I’ve had bedder edge retention off of $6 420J knives. I put a few more edges on it to make sure I was passed the steel that was burned up from creating the factory edge, and it still wasn’t much better. Seeing this Miguron test at 56 HRC lines up with my use experience. And my blade is PVD coated, so that process probably makes mine more like 55 HRC 😢
    On top of all that, the lock failed on me with almost no pressure. Cut my thumb extremely bad. So now the Elgar sits in a junk basked in my bedroom. Huge disappointment all around. Miguron: if you happen to see this, please work on your heat treatments and your lock, face geometry! The fit, finish and action on the Elgar is phenomenal!Far above and beyond what I expected for the price you are charging. If you could just fix those two things, you would hands-down be my favorite knife company in the world!
    LTK: thank you so much for doing these tests! Keep up the great work

    While I'm glad to see the Hogue knife tested in Magnacut has proper HRC, I'm never going to be over how soft the Magnacut is on my Hogue Deka. Even sent it in and they didn't do a thing. They sent it back with the same warped soft blade except with even more damage to the blade itself at the apex. To this day that knife won't take an edge.

    Thanks, I never bought chinese made knives before 2024 just because I have my favorite brand which happen to not come from there. Bought the Artisan Revel and Jack Wolf Gunslinger recently. Both in S90V. Even on the stones it was weird, the burr can't be raised properly, not like on an S90V Spyderco. I did not have a hard time sharpening them properly, but I've never seen S90V act that way on the stones before. I've cut a lot with the Revel and the edge retention is poopoo in my opinion. Really disappointed.
    The Gunslinger acted similarly on the stones, I hope it's gonna keep its edge better .

  • @realbroggo

    Although I've read that Crucible recommend a target of 56-58 HRC my understanding is that the optimal target is 60-62. Crucible's recommended HRC needs to be taken in context in that: 1) it offers S90V as a 440C alternative - not surprising as S90V is essentially powdered 420 with high vanadium. If there is an intention to keep hardness, toughness & ease of sharpening correlated the low HRC is understandable. 2) Crucibles HRC is a recommendation only! To get the best edge performance out of S90V 60+ is needed even if some toughness is sacrificed. Sharp blades all.

    Whelp according to crucible s90v 58 hrc is acceptable in that range for thoughness,but shooting for 60-61 hrc is optimal.

    • @bornonthebattlefront4883
      @bornonthebattlefront4883 2 месяца назад +1

      Pretty sure 58 is fine if you need more toughness, as S90V is not at all a tough steel 😂
      But at 58 HRC it should still beat out S30V, S45VN, S35VN and even 20CV at 60 HRC
      Also at 58HRC, it will be significantly more stain resistant as well, like surprisingly stain resistant, not quite 20CV, but will beat out XHP & S30V at the same hardness, which is kinda Nutty
      S90V is a very strange steel, because the difference with hardness is amplified more then most other steels
      While something like 20CV might gain marginally more stainless and toughness properties by being softer, S90V gets massive gains to both by going down, and gets insane sharpness & edge retention going up
      All relative of course, it’s not magic

  • @stevenlachance8576
    @stevenlachance8576 2 месяца назад +2

    S90V should be HRC 60+. Our eyes are on magnacut so the manufacturers are getting good heat treats there. Until the lower HRCs on S90V and M390 and others are brought to light the tendency on the makers side will be to treat low to keep their costs down

    S90V doesn't really gets higher than 60hrc and it is very tricky steel to do right (even for custom knifemakers). That's why I don't like and do not buy knives in s90v. Elmax, M390 or Magnacut is the way to go for a high performance stainless steels. Apart from that I choose carbon steels any day. 😎

  • @drewrinker2071

    A lot of your Magnacut is going to be 61-62 at best. According to Larin Thomas it can go higher via cryogenic cooling. Most of your production manufacturers are not going to do this hence why 61-62 is what we are seeing.

    It's super expensive to grind a high RC rated S90V blade, you can imagine how many grinding belts they would go through if all S90V is at 63rc

    I was gonna subscribe but I checked and I already am! Arn't those Miguron's kinda cheap knives? Maybe they skimped on the heat trest!

    Very disappointing from Miguron. I'd love to see what Jack Wolf knives get on their S90V if you can test one at some point. It's a bit rough to figure out what that range is supposed to be, wouldn be very interested in a video on recommended ranges for most common blade steels.

      Check out the link to the spreadsheet that I posted. That will have hardness ranges for various types of steels.

    S90V isn't supposed to be as high as M390/20CV it's optimal at a point or 2 lower. So a 59 is actually good. Atleast according to Google. 56 would be the lowest acceptable number.

      I’ve also heard s90v is easier to heat treat than m390 is that true?

    Ive been saying this about Miguron for a long time now....if you sharpen knives yourself you will know. GARBAGE edges out of the box on all models is your first red flag....and soft soft almost unable to sharpen on some I have had... I wont go near another Miguron.

      Thank goodness I related that to them. They’re saying that they’re gonna change heat treatment contractors.

Huge disappointment all around
