Magnacut Multitools, the future?

- This tool is now available at Knife center and other places as well. My biggest issues is the discrepancy between the steel of the blade and the rest of the tool.
Cheers!

I feel it's missing quite a bit of tools to be compared to a fieldmaster: the opener layer also provides screwdrivers and an awl, not to mention the scale tools, space for a straight pin
I got the MKM Malga 6 in Magnacut with black Micarta scales in early November 2023 for $112 plus $8 shipping and no tax from GPKnives. The Micarta is more slippery and much less textured than I expected, which is mildly disappointing. I also opted for the leather pocket sheath with the magnetic flap and honestly, they make a classy carry combo. The lanyard attachment point on my Malga 6 is loose like yours. Overall, it’s a well-designed tool on par with the traditional SAK.
you could lightly sand the scales for a gripper matte finish
I'd love a version with: Main blade, combo tool and scissors. Kind of like the victorinox compact, that would be an insta buy
Got the Campo 7 with a philips, corkscrew, bottle and can openers as well as scissors and a fork. Good tool.
Good review as usual. Do you think that we will ever see Magnacut replacement blades made for the Wave+, Surge, Free P4...?
I think that thousands of people who normally don't mod their knives would 'bite the bullet' to get that upgrade, including me.
I got one with the fork, bottle opener and can opener. I like it. I haven’t cut much with the blade but it’s magnacut so it should be fine. I like it a lot so far as what I wanted was a premium SAK style knife.
Very nice 👍 I prefer pull cut saws because they unclog on the push stroke and overall seem to cut more efficiently. Agreed though that it needs some kind of flat head screwdriver.
For pull cut on a slip joint, your also far less likely to end up needing stitches from closing it on yourself on the push stroke.
I was planning on getting one of those just to make a donor out of the blade for a custom sak
The campo 8 is a knifecenter exclusive that adds an opener layer. Not in magnacut yet as far as i know. Also, i believe only the scales are removable but the knife is still rivoted like a Victorinox
Great to note sir it'd been cool if it'd been all with screws so it was easy to mod
It has an M390 main blade which is great.
I would buy it if the phillips was square so you could use a 1/4 or 4mm adaptor! thanks for the share! stay awesome!
Yea they ought to take advantage of those adapters for sure
I have the Malga 6 and I actually used the corkscrew yesterday for a bottle of wine. It was handy to have and I wasn’t expecting to need it. I want to buy the Malga 5 and swap out some of the tools between them
I like to store a small size paperclip in my SAK corkscrews. Fits flush in there and comes in handy a lot.
The MKM multi tools would be compelling if they would come closer to just ripping off a SAK but with micarta scales and better blade steel. Premium blade steel is great, but the knife is my third or fourth most frequently used tool. The flathead driver on the bottle opener is one of the most used tools on any SAK that I have. All of the MKM variants get this wrong or don't even have it.
Apreciate the innovation in the SAK knife realm. but I think, dropped the ball not making a “Compact” equivalent model
To answer your question Yes I would carry that. Those screws will only let you change the scales. They will not let you disassemble the tool. Unfortunately. Love your videos please keep up the great work.
I can’t see the rational for getting that type of steel on a tool like that.
I'd think hard about this multitool if I didn't already have the arc and love it
Also received the watches and already love them
Thanks Dom!
not quite there for me Dom - for the reasons you mentioned
Yea...frankly SAK is king
I got the Campo 7 and it is a little bit disappointing. The blade and scissors are great, but the rest of the tools are not great compared to a SAK. I can’t even open the bottle opener/flathead with destroying my fingernails (I tried 2 models), because the combination of the nailnick and required force doesn’t work.
Got mine in today with magnacut. So far so good.
Have that brand only 2 item option as blade and scissor only? Thx for review.
Ever owned/used/tried any blades made of Vanax? It sounds so fancy.
I have really been wanting to try out the MKM multitools. They really appeal to me. I like MKM designs in general. Thanks for the review Dom. You will have to let me know your thoughts after using it for a while.
Wonder if you could take something like a Climber or a Super Tinker, and replace the saw and scissors with a Victorinox scissor and the opener layer.
Or if you could with some modding put that blade in a Victorinox.
Since it's screwed shut, it should have some interesting modding potential.
Not knocking the tool for build quality because it looks really nice. For me, it seems like the selection of tools they included however,
can almost be interchangeable in many uses. Two knives (it has bugged me forever that victorinox doesn’t replace the pen blade on a few more models), scissors and a saw (all cutting implements). I guess depending on what your uses are, that could be ideal to some people. For me, i’m not sure I would buy this because I generally like to have a bottle opener/slot, can opener, file (if possible), and corkscrew (I have found the corkscrew to be my go to tool for undoing difficult knots), and generally a separate plier based multitool. I suppose, you could pair a plier based multitool that could fulfill most of those functions. I generally like to carry a victorinox along with a plier based multitool just since I know the tools on victorinox are so reliable. I feel like the highlight of this tool for me would be the magnacut blade so I could probably more easily swap whatever dedicated knife I carry with a magnacut blade on my main carry knife. If your not the type to carry a full dedicated knife in addition to other tools, I could see this tool being highly desirable to people like that.
When you were saying 'premium' I was expecting more than they're asking. It'll likely sell fairly well with those who want a gucci SAK. Don't know how big that market is, though.
I think it is a great idea to have the small blade not be redundant of the large blade. On my bolster i have a serrated small blade i do use from time to time. If it were just a straight blade it would not be worth having on such a small knife.
I said Victorinox should've made the small blade serrated years ago; thankfully _someone_ listened. I find it redundant to make both straight blades. You want serrated to cut through rope and other items easier, while leaving the straight blade for finer tasks. Wish Victorinox would listen... 😋 In the toothpick slot they (Victorinox) should put a diamond blade sharpener.
You know what, I hate when multitools take a slot with a can opener, but if they put serrated teeth on the inside curve of the can opener, to use for processing cord, that would make me warm up to it then. As far as just using it as a small flathead screwdriver, doesn't excite me. I REALLLLLLYYY want companies to start putting carbon steel files in multitools. Right now, I'm buying tiny carbon steel files to carry around because I used the file from my old multitool on a nail in my shed and it busted that file. Blah.
Oh, and they need to start making the teeth on needle nose multitool pliers way grippier, like seen on the knipex cobras. ☺️
Then you would want it reversed. Aka long serrated and short straight blade...the other way makes little sense.
@maxlvledc there's a serrated spartan (sometimes called the weekender) out of production now but can still be found.
I have the KC exclusive Campo 8 wich is m390 and its my go to pocket carry when camping now.
Cheers 🍻
@@maxlvledc I figured most people do not like serrated because of the hassle of sharpening it is more time consuming than straight blades, so more people use the straight blade, thus keep the big blade straight and small blade serrated. They should make two options, really, so people can choose what works for them. 🤷♂️
No bottle opener? No awl? No hole for a straight pin? No tweezers? I'd rather have the Huntsman, but to each their own. Thanks for showing it though. :)
The Malga 6 has the reamer tool & cap lifter.
@@allemander 'Yeah, for over 100 dollars. I'm not down with these knife companies trying to make things luxury items. I can just get a Victorinox. But thanks! Enjoy your luxury SAK. lol I see it has a weird fork. I'm sure you'll use that a lot. lol
@@franticflintstone7999
The fork, I’ve had just one occasion to use, thus far, in the two months of owning the Malga 6. It was at a bistro-type restaurant where hot potato fries were served with a dipping sauce but the waiter wandered away without supplying our table silverware lol. Indeed, that particular implement will likely be more of a novelty than a regular-use tool, but it was nifty having it when it was actually needed.
Knives, cars, homes, watches, mobile phones, stereo speakers, virtually any consumer good can be found in luxury form for those with a more discerning palette, alongside their ole’ tried & true, more cost-effective counterpart. Supply & demand trends dictate this cycle. I’ve knives and many other collectibles in a broad spectrum of price ranges. Sometimes, basic is good enough and other times, a little sparkle tickles the fancy! 😉
Love the finish. It's a great looking knife.
I really love the idea of this, and I definitely think this is a really good competitor to a Victorinox. I would love to have one of these but unfortunately with its current tool combination is really not one for me. If MKM made one for more urban EDC without the saw and added the opening layers It could very well replace my Pioneer X.
Seems like an expensive downgrade. The SAK climber is also a 3 layer. It has all those tools, plus a bottle opener, can opener, 2 flat heads, parcel hook, and an awl.
Edit: This tool also looks like it's peened together. I think the visible screws are just for the scales?
I kinda love it...buuuut...missing the plus scales tools that the SAK has and missing the bottle openen/flathead and the can opener (wich i use to lift up my waterbottle with from the fire when on an outdoor trip)...is kinda a missbuy for me if i bought it....i think imma stick with my trusty huntsman, but still loving the magnacut pocketknife tho! Its fantastic looking also with the micarta scales
Really miss the flat driver 🤷🏼♂️
I just can’t bring myself to use a slip joint knife. If they had this with a locking mechanism for the knife I would buy it in a heartbeat
I got the knife center exclusive version and when I tried to mess with it to get rid of that stupid serrated blade, it was actually pinned on the inside and I couldn't do any work on it, athough I could remove the scales. Unfortunately, removing the screws unstabilized the whole thing and I ended up bending the liners and it's currently essentially unusable. But anyway, I make this comment only because it was a pinned on the inside even though it looked like it was fine to disassemble on the outside.
I dunno, I feel like it doesn't speak to me. I like the idea of a Magnacut blade, but one of the charms about Victorinox is that it's relatively affordable. I have a Fieldmaster and paid less than $40. Sharpening the steel is no biggie. I feel like I'd rather have a decent yet affordable multitool with an average blade steel paired with a good quality dedicated knife with a premium steel, but that's just my take.
I would love to see this compared to the American Service Knife.
I really like the idea of the second smaller knife blade being serrated. I dislike combo edges, but the functionality being split like this is interesting.
Though I do wish it had a pocket clip cause I am a sucker for pocket clips. I imagine that if they made other scales one may be clip compatible, or a 3rd party clip one.
I've been debating whether or not I have room for a full-size SA style knife, and this is some very interesting food for thought. I REALLY like the tools in the Campo 8, and especially that it comes in red, but the serrated small blade is a total dealbreaker for me. at the $150 price point, I expect to have it for the rest of my life with proper care, and the fact that one of the tools is guaranteed to wear out at some point and I'll be unable to service it would make me want to throw it away every time I look at it.
It would be possible to reprofile it. I’d use it until it’s dull. Then, just grind/ sharpen the serrations off.
Serrated knifes can be sharpened it just takes more time.
Its kinda pretty but practicality is my priority and it took me a long time to find *my* perfect edc tool, so I'll stick to my sak Cybertool L.
I think the Medford ASK is also magnacut.
Neato mosquito.
Magnacut sounds like an amazing material for tools and blades.
The secondary bevel looks really sloppy. That's disappointing.
I would appreciate you reviewing the small serrated blade because the few reviews I have seen said the serrations
really suck they are not done properly and you end up with a useless blade ? I would be very disappointed if this
is the case. Thank you for your time.
That would not surprise me. It seemed rather dull.
Too much money for me personally. I can ealisy sharpen any low to mid range steels. I do try to only but quality tool though. Steel just doesnt bother me that much.
For the price not worth it, missing the flathead and can opener. I carry the SAK hiker it does the job. Never had any use for scissors.
I really like it but the price is insane
I'm an Italian fan of mkm, but price here too high for what you need that.. you buy just because you like or you are a collector.
I don't like sissy knives and slip joints, but the Philips driver looked really good.
Thanx for the video my Bladed Brother 👍 ⚔️ ✝️ 🇺🇲
I would like it to have the tweezers.
I hope Victorinox will offer Magnacut for their main blade. Wishful thinking though, I don't think Victorinox has offered other metals except Damascus on some really limited offerings
Can’t wait for Magnacut to over saturate the market and catch one on sale.
Yeah as impressive as magnacut is it's not a "I need this" when I already have so many tools and after I got my k390 spyderco endela it's been hard to justify trying other super steels imho.
@@Horde334 I am satisfied with my Manix 2 LW in CPM SPY27… but something about a magnacut edc fixed blade… has me very curious.
Nice change. Leatherman got away with crap steel on their multitools for years. Victorinox is still getting away with it.
I wonder if the scales from a Swiss army knife would fit.
Nope
It does look nice but not something I would buy. I would never spend that much on a multi-tool just for the knife. I'd rather have a Multi-tool for about $50 in my pocket with tools for occasional need and supplement with a good dedicated folding knife.
I also need the screwdriver/bottle opener. It’s a no for me dawg.
I'm from Brasil and I like your videos. Do you know anything about the new cold steel recon 1 in magnacut? I was thinking that it was a fake News, but jimi Slash himself confirm to me that it's legit. I hope you can understand my english trying. Thks
Yes it's legit and made in Italy.
Like the Micarta, Magnacut, and disassembly features, as well as that it's Italian made, but not enough for the premium price. Skip.
I dont see the need of a supersteel in a SAK. yes, something nicer would be appriciated, like s30v, but its a slipjoint, with a small blade. If i want a good knife, i get a dedicated one. Folder, or fix, doesnt matter. But a slipjoint? No thx. I take a SAK, if i go out to the city, where its less likely that ill need a knife for anything important.
For me personally, there is no argument, no incentive to buy an MKM instead of a Swiss knife. The main blade is from Magnacut, so what? If that's all, it's not enough for me.🤷🏻♂️
By that logic, no one should buy anything other than a gas station knife. Better steel, so what? Better handle materials, so what? Better build, so what? Different tool set, so what? Your comment literally makes no sense.
@@zripster It has a Magnacut main blade, the rest is not. Victorinox also has the scissors, Victorinox also has the saw, Victorinox also has the screwdriver, Victorinox also has the small blade (not a Magnacut) just easier for sharpening. The grip shells can be replaced at a number of custom shops. So what do you think is the reason to buy an MKM instead of a Victorinox? Just because it's an American steel that was used here doesn't make it superior to the Victorinox.
@derteix you are really stretching with this argument lol. There is not a single Victorinox with this same tool set. It's not just an American steel, it is a far superior steel, with better toughness, edge retention, and arguably corrosion resistance. The mkm also has an adjustable pivot. So a Magnacut blade isn't the only difference, and even if it was it would still be a huge improvement over Victorinox. Its fine if you simple don't want to buy the knife, but stop the misrepresentation and lying about the knives
@@zripster I'm all for people having the option for super steel on their SAKs. However, I personally carry a pocket knife in addition to a SAK, so I don't consider it necessary. And this MKM is three times the price with less functionality than a Huntsman. I can sharpen a Huntsman in minutes. To each their own. I like that there are choices!
@franticflintstone7999 completely agree on that. But functionality doesn't always mean better, if it were, why stop at the huntsman, that obviously doesn't have the functionality of the swiss champ. But i agree on choices being good, different people have different needs. And some people need a higher quality multitool.
Does anybody else agree that magna cut on a light duty EDC is silly
I can sharpen the blade on my Swiss army compact in about 20 seconds
For $149…. Victorinox is still king
If they come out with a cadet x style knife with scissors they will destroy Swiss Army….
At .040" BTE, the only difference 80% of users are gonna see between MC and 420HC in real world use is corrosion resistance.
Can't fault Leatherman, they have no reason to _do_ any better when people who don't _know_ any better throw money at them and eat up hype videos like this.
Looks nice in a drawer but I’d pass.
Kershaw bel air in the mail as we speak
Not just buying the tool for a better steel knife. More and better toolset all day long. So no. I wouldn't spend the bucks for its limited value.
Everything but the blade feels on a lower level than Victorinox. I would buy it if I had the know-how to take that blade and put it into my explorer.
@@roytore5062 when i handled a MKM, campo 7, the fit and finish for me is very good. The store i visited was selling it for about $225 USD, so maybe they paid taxes when they imported it. The total price maybe high but i prefer it over Victorinox, specially the main blade
Seems like a dime store fieldmaster for Gucci prices. Pass.
It's a 1000% gimmick and marketicg BS
That hardly seems accurate. 🤔
@@allemander bet you can't recognize difference if remove engraving)
@@ollivgv
Perhaps, not visually, but with controlled cutting tests, the difference between premium steel and bargain steel will likely reveal itself in short order.
